“Whether he means it or not, his saying it is an indelible moral stain on our country,” said one law professor.

President Donald Trump on Sunday renewed his threat to carry out a genocidal attack on Iran, pledging to “blow up” the “whole country” of over 90 million people and to demolish critical civilian infrastructure if it does not sign a peace deal by Wednesday.

“If they don’t sign the deal, then the whole country is going to get blown up,” Trump said, according to Fox News correspondent Trey Yingst, who relayed the comments on air Sunday morning.

Trump also reportedly said that the US was “preparing to hit [Iran] harder than any country has ever been hit before because you cannot let them have a nuclear weapon.”

The comments came after Iran once again closed the Strait of Hormuz on Saturday in response to the continued US blockade of Iranian ports, which Iranian officials said violated the terms of the agreement reached between the two countries.

After renewing the blockade, Iranian gunboats fired upon a pair of Indian-flagged ships attempting to travel through the strait Saturday.

In response, Trump issued a furious post on Truth Social Sunday morning, saying that he would send a team of negotiators—Vice President JD Vance, his son-in-law Jared Kushner, and special envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff—to Islamabad on Monday for another round of negotiations.

“We’re offering a very fair and reasonable DEAL, and I hope they take it because, if they don’t, the United States is going to knock out every single Power Plant, and every single Bridge, in Iran,” Trump wrote. “NO MORE MR. NICE GUY!”

“They’ll come down fast, they’ll come down easy and, if they don’t take the DEAL, it will be my Honor to do what has to be done, which should have been done to Iran, by other Presidents, for the last 47 years,” he continued.

It echoed the similarly genocidal threat made by Trump earlier in April that “a whole civilization will die… never to be brought back again,” if Iran did not agree to a deal, which drew worldwide condemnation and sparked efforts by some members of Congress to pursue impeachment or push for Trump’s cabinet to remove him via the 25th Amendment.

Trump has appeared eager to end the war with Iran after it caused economic upheaval and pushed his already dire approval rating even lower. But he has also backed Israel when it sought to undermine key points of the agreement, prompting retaliation from Iran.

The ceasefire announced earlier this month between the US and Iran initially included a halt to the hostilities between Israel and Lebanon. But within hours, Israel unleashed its most punishing set of attacks against Lebanon since the war began in March. Trump then backed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu when he claimed that Lebanon was never part of the deal.

Iran only agreed to open the Strait of Hormuz on Friday after Israel and Lebanon appeared to agree to a 10-day ceasefire. But Israel has already violated that agreement several times, continuing to raze Lebanese villages and fire upon people approaching its newly imposed “yellow line.”

In addition to calling for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, which was open before he launched the war in late February, Trump has demanded that Iran make a deal to hand over all of its enriched uranium, which he refers to as “nuclear dust.”

A spokesperson for Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has said such a proposal would violate Iran’s sovereignty: “Iran’s uranium is Iran’s asset. It is our responsibility, our energy, our sovereign right.”

An end to the attacks against Lebanon has been described as another central demand from Iran, although officials said the decision to close the strait again on Saturday was in response to Trump’s continued blockade of Iranian ports.

International law strictly prohibits indiscriminate attacks on civilian infrastructure with no military objective, including bridges and power plants that are critical to human life.

Trump’s previous threats to bomb Iran “back to the Stone Ages” suggest that the latest threats are less about accomplishing a specific military objective than about inflicting suffering on Iranian society as leverage.

Last time Trump made such a threat, a coalition of more than 200 groups, including Amnesty InternationalHuman Rights Watch, Refugees International, and Oxfam America, wrote in an urgent letter stating that if carried out, such attacks would constitute “a grave atrocity” and that “a threat to wipe out ‘a whole civilization’ may amount to a threat of genocide.”

Human Rights Watch said that, if acted upon, “the statement could be indicative of criminal intent if Trump were ever prosecuted by the International Criminal Court.

The last time Trump threatened to unleash an apocalyptic attack on Iran, the threat preceded a deal that, at least in principle, involved the US agreeing to negotiate based on a set of terms laid out by the Iranians. This led many observers to characterize the threats as bluster meant to save face before capitulation rather than a sincere pledge to annihilate Iran.

However, Adil Haque, a law professor at Rutgers and the executive editor at Just Security, said that, “Whether he means it or not, his saying it is an indelible moral stain on our country.”

One Olympic athlete, a skier representing Britain, registered his disgust with US immigration enforcement agents by urinating the message “Fuck ICE” in the snow.

Hundreds of protesters gathered in the streets of Milan, Italy on Friday to protest the presence of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents at the 2026 Winter Olympics, with protesters waving “FCK ICE” signs and condemning Trump administration officials—including Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

Reuters reported that demonstrators rallying ahead of the opening ceremony could be heard “blowing plastic whistles, which have become a symbol of anti-ICE rallies in the US.” The Trump administration said a small group of ICE officers would be traveling to Milan to help provide security for Vance and Rubio, who arrived in the city on Thursday.

The protests came a day after Gus Kenworthy, a skier representing Britain, urinated the message “Fuck ICE” in the snow ahead of the winter games’ opening festivities and urged Americans to pressure their representatives to rein in the agency.

“Innocent people have been murdered, and enough is enough,” Kenworthy wrote on social media. “We can’t wait around while ICE continues to operate with unchecked power.”

Asked If He’ll Apologize to Alex Pretti’s Family, JD Vance Scoffs ‘For What?’

Others in the Trump administration have walked back the lie that Pretti was a “would-be-assassin.” Vance isn’t sorry.

Vice President JD Vance is refusing to apologize to the family of Alex Pretti after defaming the Minnesotan in order to justify his killing by Customs and Border Protection agents late last month on the streets of Minneapolis.

Video shows Pretti, a 37-year-old intensive care unit nurse, was shot at least ten times by a pair of agents after being disarmed of a handgun, which he was carrying legally according to local police.

JD Vance Caught in Several ‘Pernicious’ Lies in Defense of ICE

‘Please Get the Truth Out,’ Alex Pretti’s Parents Plead as Trump Officials Baselessly Smear Shooting Victim

Within hours of the incident, the Trump administration had already begun to run with false claims that Pretti had “brandished” his weapon at agents, which were immediately disproven by video. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, who first made the claim, has since backed off that characterization following criticism.

On social media, Vance shared a post in which senior White House adviser Stephen Miller described Pretti as a “would-be-assassin” who sought to “murder federal agents,” a claim for which they have still not provided any evidence weeks later.

President Donald Trump himself told reporters last week that he did not believe Pretti was an assassin, even acknowledging that the shooting was a “mistake.”

Even Miller, who rarely backs down from even the most extreme and outrageous statements, has since acknowledged that agents may not have been following protocol when they shot Pretti.

https://www.commondreams.org/news/vance-wont-apologize-pretti

But Vance is not sorry. During an interview with the Daily Mail on Tuesday, wheninterviewer Philip Nieto asked if the vice president would apologize to Pretti’s family, he retorted, “For what?” with a smirk.

“For, you know, labeling him an assassin with ill intent,” Nieto answered.

“I just described to you what I said about Alex Pretti, which is that he’s a guy who showed up with ill intent to an ICE protest,” Vance responded, referring to Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Nieto then asked if Vance would apologize if an FBI probe opened last week found that the officers involved in the shooting had violated Pretti’s civil rights.

Vance, appearing exasperated, sighed, “So if this hypothetical leads to that hypothetical leads to another hypothetical—”

Nieto then interjected, “It’s a real case that’s open.”

“Like I said, we’re gonna let the investigation determine,” Vance said.

Then, in the ultimate dose of irony, he continued: “I don’t think it’s smart to prejudge the investigation, I don’t think it’s fair to those ICE officers,” he said, misidentifying the agency responsible for the shooting as ICE rather than CBP.

He notably did not give his thoughts on whether it was similarly unfair to “prejudge” Pretti as an attempted murderer within hours of his killing.

A clip of the interaction garnered immediate disgust online.

Ken Martin, the chair of the Democratic National Committeesaid that “JD Vance had the opportunity to be a normal human being and show some empathy for the family of a man who was murdered. To nobody’s surprise, he’s doubling down on being an asshole.”

Pedro Gonzalez, a right-wing activist who has since become fiercely critical of the Trump administration, said that with his “little smile after ‘for what,’” Vance appeared to be “relishing the opportunity to seem cold-blooded.”

He added, “What Vance really is at heart is a hollow shell of a man who defends the murderers of American citizens more vigorously than he has ever defended his own family from the bigots he’s trying to court for 2028.”

John Ganz, the author of the newsletter Unpopular Front, simply said Vance is the “most repulsive person in politics, and there is stiff competition.”

Kristi Noem Goes on TV and Lies Through Her Teeth (Again) About ICE Killing of Renee Nicole Good

“It should be terrifying to every American how Noem lies,” said one critic. “She doesn’t sweat or move uncomfortably. She just doesn’t care. This is what Trump has created. An environment where you only get in trouble if you don’t lie.”

Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem sat for a live interview with CNN‘s Jake Tapper on Sunday morning about the killing of Renee Nicole Good by a federal immigration agent last week and lied straight through her teeth to the American public about what happened.

Since Good was shot and killed by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent Jonathan Ross on Wednesday, members of the Trump administration have consistently tried to portray the shooting as justified despite indisputable video evidence contradicting their false claims and narratives.

‘ICE Out for Good’: Weekend Rallies Nationwide After Killing of Renee Good

Noem, who released her first statement on the shooting within three hours of Good’s killing, has joined Vice President JD Vance as the leading liars and propagandists—with plenty of help from people like Tricia McLaughlin, Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs at the US Department of Homeland Security, and Border Czar Tom Homan—within the Trump administration.

In her exchange with Tapper, who confronted Noem over the blatant chasm between her claims about what happened—she called Good a “domestic terrorist” who “attacked” federal agents—and what anyone with two good eyes who watches the variety of videos made public of the shooting can plainly see for themselves.

Various angles of the video, including audio from Good’s final moments, have shown that she was not “yelling” at officers or “attacking” them in any way. Video shows several vehicles driving around her car in the minutes prior to the shooting. Good has a visible smile on her face when she says, directly to Ross as he circles her car, “That’s fine, dude. I’m not mad at you.” Detailed analyses of the footage shows Ross could just as easily have stepped aside—without drawing and firing his weapon—in order to dodge the moving car, which he did—even with firing the fatal shots—without injury or harm to others.

Asked by Tapper why she did not wait for the full facts before speaking out publicly to demonize Good and defend the officer, Noem falsely claimed that “everything that I’ve said has been proven to be factual, and the truth.”

That’s a lie.

“With all due respect,” Tapper responded, “the first thing you said was not what happened.”

“It is absolutely what happened,” Noem said, lying once again about her initial comments and their relationship to what factually transpired.

“It should be terrifying to every American how Noem lies,” said James Abrenio, a criminal defense attorney, in a social media post on Sunday. “She doesn’t sweat or move uncomfortably. She just doesn’t care. This is what Trump has created. An environment where you only get in trouble if you don’t lie. Even about an officer shooting a woman in the face on video.”

Noem, in the interview, goes on to claim that Good’s behavior fits the textbook definition of “domestic terrorism,” despite scores of law enforcement and civil liberties experts who have reviewed the video saying that Ross’ behavior betrayed basic police training about how to deal with a routine traffic stop or de-escalate a situation involving a motor vehicle in a roadway.

When Tapper tries to pin Noem down, asking her to explain what she thinks Good was trying to do when she moved her car, the secretary deflects by saying the real “question” should be why are people—in this case a broadcast journalist—“arguing with the president who is trying to keep people safe?”

Noem’s overt gaslighting—telling the public something objectively contrary to available facts—has become part and parcel of the Trump administration’s Orwellian approach in the president’s second term.

“Kristi Noem is a stone-cold liar who has zero credibility,” said Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.), the minority leader in the House, on Friday in reaction to her earlier comments about the case. “There is nothing to suggest the shooting of an unarmed woman in Minneapolis was justified. This heinous killing must be criminally investigated to the full extent of the law.”

On Friday, The Guardian documented a litany of false claims made Noem, Trump, McLaughlin, and others, comparing them against what is factually known based on video evidence and eye-witness accounts:

The claim

“ … rioters began blocking ICE officers and one of these violent rioters weaponized her vehicle, attempting to run over our law enforcement officers in an attempt to kill them – an act of domestic terrorism” – post on X by the Department of Homeland Security.

The reality

There is simply no evidence that Good was “a violent rioter” or “domestic terrorist”. No riot was taking place before her encounter with the ICE agents, and the department could not yet have been certain of her identity at 12.43pm, the time the message was posted. There is no evidence that Good – a poet and mother – was a terrorist.

The claim

“ … the woman driving the car was very disorderly, obstructing and resisting, who then violently, willfully, and viciously ran over the ICE Officer” – post on Truth Social by Donald Trump.

The reality

Video of the incident shows that Good was not “disorderly”, and had reversed her car and allowed at least one ICE vehicle to pass before other agents confronted her. A separate video clearly shows that the officer who fired the fatal shots walked up to the front of Good’s car, which was turning away from him as it began to move forward, and he remained on his feet as the vehicle passed him.

The claim

“An ICE officer, fearing for his life, the lives of his fellow law enforcement and the safety of the public, fired defensive shots … The ICE officers who were hurt are expected to make full recoveries” – Tricia McLaughlin, homeland security assistant secretary, in a post on X.

The reality

The officer who killed Good was not in the pathway of her car when he began firing, analysis of the video shows. Two other officers were beside the car, and no members of the public were seen to be in harm’s way. There is no evidence that any ICE officer was injured.

According to The Atlantic‘s Adam Serwer, such “blatant lies” by the administration in the wake of Good’s killing serve various purposes:

They perpetuate the false narrative that federal agents are in constant peril and therefore justified in using lethal force at the slightest hint of danger. They assure federal agents that they can harm or even kill American citizens with impunity, and warn those who might be moved to protest Trump’s immigration policies of the same thing. Perhaps most grim, they communicate to the public that if you happen to be killed by a federal agent, your government will bear false witness to the world that you were a terrorist.

Following the DHS secretary’s latest comments on Sunday, Democratic Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker, also speaking on Tapper’s show, said Noem “needs to resign or be impeached.”
