Palestine solidarity hunger strikers in Britain face mounting health risks as Starmer government continues to refuse engagement with their demands.

More Palestine solidarity hunger strikers in Britain have been hospitalized over the past week, as half of those taking part in the protest pass more than 50 days without food. While Keir Starmer’s administration continues to refuse engagement with the activists’ demands, health workers and family members warn of serious risks of death. Testimonies from the strikers themselves describe harsh physical decline. “I don’t think people realize how serious this is, as on day 35 you risk brain damage, organ failure and heart attack,” Rahma Hoxha, sister of hunger striker Teuta Hoxha, said on December 18.

Eight activists – Amu Gib, Qesser Zuhrah, Jon Cink, Heba Muraisi, Teuta Hoxha, Kamran Ahmed, Lewie Chiaramello, and Umer Khalid – have joined the hunger strike on a rolling basis since early November. Since then, three strikers have ended their action. Many of the strikers have been imprisoned for over a year while awaiting trial for taking part in direct action in solidarity with Palestine. Their demands include an end to censorship in prison, including the withholding of calls and books; immediate bail for all Palestine Action prisoners; the deproscription of Palestine Action; the right to a fair trial; and the shutdown of all Elbit Systems sites in Britain.

Over the past week, incidents have been reported in which prison authorities failed to respond adequately to the strikers’ medical needs – needs that health workers emphasize grow more complex and dangerous with each passing day. Instead of being provided care, some activists were left waiting more than 12 hours for help and were hospitalized only after protests outside the prison.

“From 2 am, in freezing temperatures, we were forced to protest for more than 12 hours before an ambulance was finally dispatched to HMP Bronzefield so that Qesser Zuhrah could receive the urgent medical care she needs,” MP Zarah Sultana wrote on December 18. “Just as Keir Starmer’s Labour government has enabled genocide in Gaza, it is now enabling the deaths of Palestine solidarity strikers inside UK prisons.”

Health workers warn that the hunger strikers may already have crossed a point beyond which recovery is uncertain. “It is not possible to predict how long it takes to suffer irreversible organ damage or death,” Dr. Frank Arnold wrote in Medact’s guidance for hunger strikers. “The shortest time to death that I know of was 21 days. The longest survival without any food, but with careful fluid management, 70 days. That patient made a recovery but has lasting neurological damage.”

Mainstream British media have been remarkably silent even as it has become apparent that the government might be prepared to watch young people die in custody. At the same time, solidarity actions have expanded.

Education trade unionists, including executive figures from the National Education Union (NEU) and the University and College Union (UCU), have joined calls for immediate government intervention. In an open letter, they not only demanded action to protect the hunger strikers’ lives and address their demands, but also linked their current treatment to a wider crackdown on students and education workers expressing solidarity with Palestine. “We call on our trade unions, the wider Palestine solidarity movement and civil society to work together to protect the lives of the hunger strikers, defend the right to protest and end Britain’s shameful role in enabling Israel’s crimes of apartheid, occupation and genocide,” the letter states.

Health workers and artists have also mobilized in large numbers. More than 800 health professionals have signed an open letter warning British authorities of the dangers faced by the hunger strikers. Hundreds of Irish artists issued another appeal, endorsed by musicians KNEECAP and Fontaines D.C., as well as writer Sally Rooney. “Their decision to place their bodies on the line is a profound act of resistance – one that echoes the long histories of both Irish and Palestinian political prisoners who have used hunger strike as a non-violent act of sacrifice to assert their dignity in the face of state violence and repression,” the artists wrote.

Meanwhile, institutional repression against the Palestine solidarity movement in Britain continues to grow. On December 23, Prisoners for Palestine and Defend Our Juries reported new arrests during a lock-in protest in London addressing Aspen Insurance’s complicity in genocide. One of those arrested was climate and solidarity activist Greta Thunberg, who sat on the ground holding a sign reading: “I support the Palestine Action prisoners. I oppose genocide.”

“It’s not clear if the Met Police have made another one of their mistakes in interpreting the crazy ban on Palestine Action or whether the state has now turned anyone expressing support for prisoners locked up beyond the legal time limit for taking action to stop a genocide into alleged terrorists,” a Defend Our Juries spokesperson said. “If it is the former then we look forward to seeing Greta released without charge immediately. If it is the latter, it is yet another dark day for Keir Starmer’s genocide-supporting government. In calling people terrorists who are not terrorists they are not acting to protect the public, they are acting to protect the companies profiting from genocide and the genocidal state of Israel itself.”

Your Party MP Zarah Sultana addresses the Village Hotel picket, December 19, 2025

YOUR PARTY MP Zarah Sultana and dozens of trade unionists braved the wind and rain to join striking workers on the Village Hotel picket in Govan on Thursday night.

Workers at the site made history over the summer with the first strike at a major hotel chain since 1979, winning equal pay with colleagues in Edinburgh.

But they returned to the picket line last month in a bid to win a minimum of the real living wage for all workers, regardless of age.

Unite convener Daniel Friel told the rally: “Village are more than happy to spend lots of money throughout this dispute bussing up workers from across the UK to cover the work that we would have been doing.

“This is hugely expensive for them, it’s a lot more expensive than it would be just to pay us equally at the new living wage, but they would rather do that because it avoids, from their perspective, a dangerous precedent.

“They know that as soon as we get it in Glasgow, we’re going to move across other sites in the UK.”

‘Show some humanity before it is too late,’ Lammy told as Palestine Action hunger striker rushed to hospital

Shut The System activists cover Justice Secretary David Lammy’s office in graffiti

Activists graffiti the 8 hunger strikers’ demands across the Deputy PM’s north London office

A PALESTINE ACTION hunger striker was rushed to hospital some 24 hours after she reported needing urgent medical attention on her 46th day without food at HMP Bronzefield today.

Supporters including Zarah Sultana MP, doctors and trade unionists demanded immediate hospitalisation and independent medical assessment for 20-year-old Qesser Zuhrah for more than 12 hours before she was transferred out of the site by ambulance.

The Your Party MP said that Ms Zuhrah had been “refused an ambulance by the prison. She is critically ill and at immediate risk of dying.”

Online footage showed protesters chanting “let the doctor go” as a man was arrested around the time an ambulance left the scene at about 2.30pm.

Ms Zuhrah has been on remand at HMP Bronzefield awaiting trial over an August 2024 break-in at an Israeli defence firm near Bristol by the direct action group.

She is among dozens of Palestine Action activists who have been detained well over the six-month custody threshold after it was proscribed in July.

Ms Zuhrah was reportedly unable to stand and began suffering “severe” pain that required urgent medical attention from Tuesday afternoon.

Campaigners for her and other hunger strikers said that repeated calls for emergency care were made, but “prison staff have so far refused entry to ambulances and delayed treatment overnight.”

The demonstration was held outside the prison from 1.20am and the demands of the eight hunger strikers were graffitied across Mr Lammy’s north London office by Shut the System Activists.

The statement included a call for an end to media censorship, immediate bail, the right to a fair trial, the de-proscription of Palestine Action and to close all sites of Israel’s main arms supplier, Elbit Systems.

South East Coast Ambulance Service said that it did not comment on individual cases, and referred queries to the Ministry of Justice (MoJ), which was contacted for comment.

PM Sir Keir Starmer was meanwhile accused of “a lack of humanity toward people at serious risk of death” by Jeremy Corbyn MP.

The former Labour leader asked him if the MoJ would meet lawyers for the hunger strikers in the Commons.

Mr Corbyn told Sir Keir that “these are all prisoners on remand, they’re not convicted of anything. A further prisoner has been taken to hospital, as have others.

“Many people are very concerned about the regular breaches of prison conditions and prison rules in respect of these hunger strikers.

Diane Abbott, Zarah Sultana, Ayoub Khan, John McDonnell and Lord Hendy KC were among those who signed the open letter telling Mr Lammy to take “responsibility and show some humanity before it is too late.”

Mr Lammy’s office was targeted by protesters from Shut The System today, who graffitied their demands in red on the north London building.

Amnesty International UK’s Kerry Moscogiuri said: “This cruel misuse of terrorism legislation is a shameful moment for the UK government.

“It must urgently do everything in its power to bring an end to this terrible situation.”

Police cordon off an area at Bondi Beach after a reported shooting in Sydney, December 14, 2025

GUNMEN attacked a Hanukkah celebration on Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia, today [yesterday], killing at least 12 people in an “evil, anti-semitic, terrorist attack.”

The shooting began at about 6.47pm local time at the Archer Park area of the beach, where hundreds had gathered for the “Chanukah by the Sea” event marking the start of the eight-day Jewish festival.

Police said the attackers, armed with what they described as “long guns,” opened fire on the crowd as the beach was packed with families, swimmers and tourists.

At least 29 people were wounded, including two police officers, New South Wales police commissioner Mal Lanyon said.

One gunman was shot dead by police at the scene, while a second was arrested and remained in a critical condition in hospital.

Green Party leader Zack Polanski, Britain’s only Jewish political leader, said that he was “thinking of everyone in Australia and those around the world in the Jewish Community who know this fear and loss.”

“Our community is once again mourning,” he said in a statement on his way to a Chanukah event.

Your Party’s Zarah Sultana and Jeremy Corbyn were among those sending messages of solidarity with the Jewish community online, with Mr Corbyn saying: “In moments like these, we must remember our common humanity, reaffirm our opposition to hatred, and stand up for the rights of everyone to worship in freedom, safety and peace.”

Campaign group Jewish Voice for Liberation shared the Jewish Council of Australia’s message of “horror” at the shooting, adding: “Whatever the extreme level of violence suffered by civilians in Gaza, it is no excuse for the murder of uninvolved civilians thousands of miles away.”
