  • Britain proud to be ‘showing leadership’ on Palestine, says Burnham

Prime Minister Andy Burnham departs 10 Downing Street, London, to attend his first Prime Minister’s Questions at the Houses of Parliament, September 9, 2026

BRITAIN is proud to be leading the way in challenging the Israeli occupation of Palestine, Prime Minister Andy Burnham told MPs today.

Speaking in the Commons a day after Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband had announced sweeping sanctions against Israeli settlements and denounced terrorist “ethnic cleansing” in Palestine, Mr Burnham said: “Britain is showing leadership.

“Words from any politician about a two-state solution will be only words if it’s not backed with action. And leadership is about taking action.

“Britain has to stand for something. Britain has to show leadership. Britain has to stand for fairness against injustice.

“Where people are being bullied out of their homes, intimidated, we will always stand with the underdog and take what action we can to support them.

“That is leadership on the world stage, Britain being true to what it’s always been about.”

Mr Miliband himself, basking in broad approval for his measures from Labour MPs for both his commitment to the new policy and for assembling support from France, Canada and elsewhere for it, brushed aside overwrought criticism of the sanctions from chief rabbi Ephraim Mirvis, who had claimed they were “a dark day for British Jews.”

The Foreign Secretary said: “I’m a proud British Jew, and I don’t agree with the chief rabbi.

“I believe that it must be possible to do what we did, which is to stand up for British values of the rule of law, of dignity for people, of the prevention of injustice, and do so in a way, as I did yesterday, to say to anyone in our country who holds British Jews responsible for the actions of the Israeli government, that is antisemitism, pure and simple.”

He made it clear that British firms and potentially Israeli banks involved in the construction or financing of illegal West Bank settlements would be hit by the sanctions.

“We are seeking to cut off the supply of the supply lines of British finance, British construction, for settlement expansion,” Mr Miliband said.

“This is about a clear purpose, which is to draw a line in the sand and to stop this infinite, ever-expanding settlement expansion.”

He also shrugged off as “regrettable” counter-measures announced by the Netanyahu government, including the closing of the British consulate in Jerusalem and the banning of 11 MPs from visiting Israel.

“I would prefer that Israel hadn’t announced what it did, but overall, I strongly believe that what we did, along with other international allies, was absolutely the right thing to do,” the Foreign Secretary said.

The MPs sanctioned stressed it would change nothing in their attitudes and actions.

Your Party parliamentary leader Jeremy Corbyn said in a statement: “I have visited all parts of Palestine on several occasions, where I have witnessed the horrors of occupation, as well as the resilience and humanity of the Palestinian people.

“They are the ones who suffer from Israel’s apartheid.

“Israel doesn’t want the world to see what it is doing — but we can never give up in our attempts to expose the truth.

“That is the real scandal. Israel’s genocide cannot go unpunished — and I will keep speaking up for peace, freedom and justice for the Palestinian people.”

Fellow Your Party MP Zarah Sultana said: “Israel has just banned me from entering.

“Given that this is a fascist government presiding over genocide, apartheid and an illegal occupation, I’ll wear it as a badge of honour.

“I will not be intimidated into silence. I will continue to speak out against Israel’s genocide and against the UK’s complicity. If anything, this ban only strengthens my resolve to keep speaking out.”

She added: “One day, I look forward to visiting Jerusalem not as an occupied city, but as part of a free and liberated Palestine.”

Bradford West MP Naz Shah called the list “rather random and, frankly, bizarre” and said she was “proud of the UK government’s actions today, taken in line with our international legal obligations.”

She pledged to continue to campaign for a two-state solution in Palestine.

Labour MPs John McDonnell, Diane Abbott and Richard Burgon were also on the list and all five Green MPs were sanctioned by Israel.

The Green Party said: “We will not be bullied into silence by the Israeli government.

“We are proud of our MPs for standing up for Palestinian rights and demanding an end to British complicity in genocide and illegal occupation.

“Banning our representatives only strengthens our resolve. The British government must stand firm and follow these overdue restrictions with a full arms embargo and wide-ranging sanctions.”

It predicts a UK national security crisis with war, pandemics and food shortages.

Zack Polanski is calling on the government to publish the full, unredacted version of a report outlining how ecosystem collapse will plunge Britain into a national security crisis.

The report from UK intelligence chiefs warns that global ecosystem degradation and collapse will have devastating security consequences for Britain, including price rises, geopolitical instability, food and water shortages, greater pandemic risk, increased migration and conflict.

The Joint Intelligence Committee’s report was published in a redacted version in January and despite pressure from MPs and journalists, the Labour government has so far refused to release it in full.

Green party leader Polanski called on prime minister Andy Burnham to “tell the truth”, arguing that the public has a right to know the full scale of the threat.

Speaking at the Wild Summit in Bristol, Polanski said: “We’ve already seen how fragile our food systems are this year, with farmers warning that we could see empty shelves as a result of drought and flooding, and the government whispering that we should start stocking up on tinned food and bottled water.

“And these buried reports lay bare how unprepared we are for what is coming.”

  • Settlement trade restrictions are a welcome first step – Miliband must go further to end UK complicity in genocide and occupation

    Spread the love

The Green Party has welcomed restrictions on trade with illegal Israeli settlements as an overdue first step, but says the measures must be strengthened and followed by wider action to end British complicity in Israel’s illegal occupation and the ongoing genocide in Gaza.

Greens have long campaigned for a settlement trade ban and are calling for comprehensive restrictions on goods, services and investment in both directions, covering all illegal settlements with no loopholes.

The party has called for a full two-way arms embargo, wide-ranging sanctions and an end to military and intelligence cooperation with Israel.

Green Party Foreign Spokesperson Dr Ellie Chowns MP said:

“The measures announced today mark a critical and overdue step towards upholding the UK’s obligations under international law – one which the Green Party has long fought for and strongly supports. We additionally welcome the government’s recognition that the occupation is unlawful and that Palestinians face ethnic cleansing in the West Bank. Exerting pressure on the Israeli Government over illegal settlements is crucial to protecting the human rights of Palestinians, and Greens are pleased to see action taken to progress this aim.

“Important questions do remain regarding the scope of announced measures on services and investment. Ministers must make clear that restrictions cover all illegal settlements, not only settlement expansion; UK businesses must additionally be stopped from financing, insuring, and profiting from settlements that already exist. A comprehensive ban must cover goods, services, and investment in both directions, including goods containing settlement-produced ingredients or components and the letting of settlement properties, with effective enforcement and no loopholes.

“The Foreign Secretary has spoken of a fundamental reset in Britain’s relationship with the Israeli Government – this reset could not be more welcome, nor more needed. It is critical that our work does not end here; the UK has a legal and moral responsibility to use every lever to end its complicity in the Israeli Government’s crimes, including the ongoing genocide in Gaza.

“Britain’s legal duty to prevent genocide arose when ministers knew, or should have known, of a serious risk. That threshold was crossed long ago. Continuing military and intelligence cooperation with Israel while Palestinians are killed and denied lifesaving aid is a shameful failure to fulfil that duty. Ministers must take further action.

“That requires a full two-way arms embargo, wide-ranging sanctions, an end to military and intelligence cooperation, and withdrawal from the UK-Israel Trade and Partnership Agreement. Existing export licenses that sustain the occupation must be ended, and restrictions must cover F-35 components supplied through the international pool. Britain must also press for unimpeded humanitarian access and independent war crimes investigations to secure accountability and justice.

“This is a moment of real progress, and should be recognised as such. But it must also be the beginning of something much bigger. The Green Party will welcome every meaningful step towards upholding international law and protecting Palestinian rights – and we will keep pushing for further action that is still urgently needed.”

The Green Party is calling for the UK Government to:

    • Ensure restrictions form a comprehensive ban on goods, services and investment in both directions, covering all illegal Israeli settlements – not only settlement expansion – with effective enforcement and no loopholes.
    • Deliver the fundamental reset in relations with Israel promised by Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband, standing firm against threats of retaliation from US and Israeli officials.
    • Introduce a full two-way arms embargo, covering both sales to and purchases from Israel, end existing export licences that sustain the occupation, and reverse the exemption for F-35 components supplied through the international pool.
    • Impose wide-ranging sanctions, including banning the sale of Israeli government bonds in the UK and trade or investment involving companies that contribute to Israel’s genocide, alongside targeted sanctions on responsible senior officials.
    • End all military and intelligence cooperation with Israel – including cancelling and publishing the classified 2020 UK-Israel military agreement, which remains in force.
    • Demand and help secure unimpeded humanitarian access to Gaza so essential food, medicine, shelter, and other aid can reach those who desperately need it.
    • End the UK-Israel Trade and Partnership Agreement.
    • Push for safe and unimpeded access to Gaza for international media, enabling journalists to report freely and independently.
    • Use every available diplomatic lever to ensure immediate and regular International Committee of the Red Cross access to all prisoners and detainees held in Israeli facilities.
    • Drive independent investigations into war crimes and back justice mechanisms for victims, in order to bring about the accountability required for a just and lasting peace.
  • Greens warn government: Greenlighting Jackdaw would be act of climate vandalism

    Spread the love

This morning the Green Party leadership, Green MPs and Green peers co-signed a letter to the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, Miatta Fahnbulleh, to urge her not to approve the Jackdaw gas field in the North Sea, citing the fact that it will not reduce energy prices, protect jobs, or give the UK energy sovereignty.

Orcas comment on killer apes destroying the planet by continuing to burn fossil fuels.

The full text of the letter is as follows:

    Dear Miatta,

Do not approve Jackdaw gas field in the North Sea.

We are writing in response to alarming reports that you intend to give the go ahead to the Jackdaw gas field as soon as next week. As Green MPs and peers we cannot sit back and watch you proceed unchallenged with this act of climate vandalism.

Approving new drilling at Jackdaw will not take a penny off energy costs nor protect jobs. As you said last month, “if you care about affordability, North Sea does not solve that problem for you”, with UK bill-payers still facing the highest energy prices in three years this winter, as a result of our continued exposure to volatile global gas markets. Further, jobs in the North Sea have been in decline for two decades. Jackdaw would only create 27 direct full-time jobs, with the platform unstaffed for most of its operating life and much of the construction already having taken place in Norway. It is completely dishonest of your government to use the legitimate concerns of job security and the cost of living to falsely justify more fossil fuel extraction.

Approving Jackdaw will not give the UK energy sovereignty. Even under the most optimistic scenarios Jackdaw is projected to contribute just 2% of UK gas demand over its lifetime (Uplift, 2026). We know that the only way to achieve energy sovereignty is to get the UK off fossil fuels as fast as possible, by significantly scaling up renewable energy and electrification.

Approving new oil and gas will add fuel to the fire of the climate emergency. Last week, the UN Environment Programme warned that “immediate and sustained cuts to greenhouse gas emissions” were crucial to avoid the worst impacts of climate breakdown. Approving more fossil fuels, at a time when the UK has just experienced record-breaking and deathly heatwaves and wildfires, is a complete dereliction of responsibility.

Approving Jackdaw will line the pockets of shareholders. The operating company, Adura, a joint venture between Shell and Equinor, has been criticised for potentially allowing Shell to write off £1.3 billion in UK tax (Global Witness, 2025). Shell has also faced criticism that it paid little or no tax in this country over several years despite huge global profits. Instead of new drilling, we need to ensure that the existing tax instruments, like the windfall tax, actually bring in the revenue that was promised, and end the subsidies that multinational oil and gas companies have received at UK taxpayers’ expense.

We are therefore urging you to be straight with the public – and instead focus on measures that would actually bring down bills and create secure jobs, like scaling up cheaper home-grown renewables, rolling out a fully-funded national home insulation programme, fully decoupling the price of electricity from gas, and ending rampant profiteering by energy companies.

Your government promised change, not continuity. Approving Jackdaw, after the hottest summer on record, isn’t doing things differently. The new Prime Minister must not repeat Keir Starmer’s mistake of treating climate and nature as second order. Change starts with ruling out all new oil and gas.

    Yours sincerely,

Polanski says he will ‘stand up for people struggling to pay their bills’ if he becomes MP for Holborn and St Pancras

Zack Polanski will seek to stand as a candidate in the Holborn and St Pancras byelection, he has announced.

The leader of the Green party in England and Wales told the Camden New Journal on Thursday he would “stand up for people struggling to pay their bills” if he was elected as the representative for the area, which became vacant when Keir Starmer announced he was standing down as an MP.

In an effort to stave off accusations he was parachuting himself into the seat, Polanski said he had lived and worked in “this community” over many years. “I know it well and I love it. It represents so many of the things that make London so special. I am so excited by the prospect of representing this place in parliament,” he said.

Local Green party members will have the final say on the selected candidate, but the Guardian understands that they are supportive of Polanski running, and that there is no clear local activist with significant support expected to oppose him.
