Heimir Hallgrímsson accused of ‘stupidity’ by Israel’s FA
Micheál Martin says IFA’s response is ‘unacceptable’
Ireland’s prime minister, Micheál Martin, backed his country’s football manager, Heimir Hallgrímsson, after Israel’s football federation accused Hallgrimsson of “stupidity, ignorance and hypocrisy” over comments about the war in Gaza.
“I think those are unacceptable remarks; they should be withdrawn,” Martin told reporters in New York, where he is attending the UN general assembly. “Israel can’t keep denying what the world knows, and what the world understands.”
Hallgrímsson sparked the row after saying before two Nations League fixtures against Israel: “We’re not playing with genocide, we’re playing against genocide. We’re playing against Israel, we’re not playing with Israel.”
Martin said Hallgrímsson’s comments reflected concerns about the scale of death and destruction in Gaza, also citing remarks by the UN secretary general, António Guterres.

ANTI-WAR campaigners in Scotland have sent solidarity to railway workers “making a stand for Palestine” and refusing to drive trains built by a firm complicit in Israeli war crimes.
Stop the War Scotland joined rail unions RMT, Aslef and TSSA today in demanding that the Scottish government remove CAF from its shortlist of contractors to build ScotRail’s new fleet of suburban trains.
The company has been listed on the United Nations human rights database for its role in running the Jerusalem Light Railway and helping expand it to territory seized by Israel.
Aslef made clear that its members would refuse to drive CAF trains, a position now echoed by TSSA general secretary Maryam Eslamdoust as she urged the Scottish government to “think again.”

A jury at the Old Bailey on September 18 unanimously acquitted Sarah Cotte, the 22-year-old SOAS graduate prosecuted under Section 12(1A) of the Terrorism Act 2000 for allegedly supporting the proscribed organisation Hamas. Her “crime” was a speech defending the Palestinian people’s right to resist occupation and genocide.

…
The absurdity at the heart of the prosecution’s case was that Cotte never mentioned Hamas at all. The organisation is proscribed in Britain, yet the speech used to justify the charge—delivered at a rally at SOAS on October 9, 2023—contained no reference to Hamas whatsoever. The prosecution’s response was to insist that she should have begun her remarks by declaring, unprompted, that she did not support a proscribed organisation. This would require any ordinary person speaking in public to pre‑emptively denounce whoever the state objects to.
At every turn, the prosecution sought to erase the distinction between support for the Palestinian people’s right to armed resistance—recognised under international law and reaffirmed by the UN General Assembly in affirming the legitimacy of the struggle of peoples under colonial and foreign occupation—and support for a specific proscribed organisation.
…
The prosecution’s entire case rested on an extraordinary supposition: that a young woman supposedly supporting Hamas had left no trace of that support. No documents, messages, transactions, associations—not even the words of the speech itself—established the allegation.
Prosecutor Rupert Kent asked the jury to believe Cotte was a secret sympathiser who concealed her politics so completely that she never once expressed them, even in the speech for which she was prosecuted.

Yemen’s Houthi group has claimed it launched missile and drone attacks on “sensitive targets” in the Saudi capital Riyadh alongside a separate attack on facilities of oil firm Saudi Aramco in coastal Yanbu, Anadolu reports.
Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree wrote on US social media company X on Friday that the group carried out two operations using “a large number of ballistic and cruise missiles as well as drones.”
He said the first operation targeted “sensitive targets” in Riyadh, while the second targeted Saudi Aramco in the western coastal city of Yanbu.
There has been as yet no Saudi comment on the Houthi claims.
Earlier Saturday, Saudi Civil Defense alerts reached Riyadh for the first time in the latest wave of warnings, with two alerts issued in the capital and two others in the Al-Kharj province. Authorities did not specify the nature of the threat or report casualties or damage linked to the warnings.
The warnings came a day after Saudi Civil Defense announced that the danger had passed in seven cities and provinces stretching from the southwest to the northwest of the kingdom following a broader series of alerts.
On Thursday, Saudi authorities said one person was killed and two others injured by falling debris from a Houthi drone that was intercepted and destroyed over the western city of Taif. Several buildings and vehicles were also damaged.
Saudi authorities have issued similar warnings in several cities and regions in recent days before later announcing that the danger had passed.
On July 20, the Houthis announced what they called a “maritime blockade” on Saudi Arabia before later claiming missile and drone attacks on Saudi-linked vessels and sites.
Saudi Arabia has led a coalition supporting Yemen’s internationally recognized government since March 2015 against the Houthis, who have controlled the capital Sanaa and several provinces since September 2014.
