New Research Shows True Death Toll From Israeli Genocide in Gaza Could Be 126,000 or Even Higher

“All those responsible for this mass slaughter must face accountability,” said one campaigner in response to the new figures, “starting with Netanyahu and other members of his openly racist, genocidal, and warmongering regime.”

Israel’s two-year assault on Gaza has left a catastrophic death toll that is even worse than most official estimates, according to research from European researchers.

A study released on Tuesday by the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research in Germany and the Center for Demographic Studies in Spain found that “the current violent death toll” in Gaza “likely exceeds 100,000” since the start of the war in October 2023.

In fact, the researchers estimate that the total death toll from the war among Palestinians in Gaza is between 99,997 and 125,915, with a median estimate of over 112,000 killed. Even the lowest death toll estimate in the study is significantly higher than the death toll estimates in most media reports, which as of this week totaled roughly 70,000 Palestinians killed.

The researchers said that the wide range of death toll estimates is a reflection of “distorted and incomplete data from conflict zones” that make precise estimates difficult.

Researcher Irena Chen, who co-led the project, told Turkish publication AA that “we will never know the exact number of dead” and added that “we are only trying to estimate as accurately as possible what a realistic order of magnitude might be.”

The study also found that the two-year Israeli assault led to a precipitous plunge in life expectancy. According to researcher Ana Gómez-Ugarte, life expectancy in Gaza “fell by 44% in 2023 and by 47% in 2024 compared with what it would have been without the war—equivalent to losses of 34.4 and 36.4 years, respectively.”

The study’s final estimates were based on data from multiple public sources, including including the Gaza Ministry of Health (GMoH), the Israeli Information Center for Human Rights in the Occupied Territories (B’Tselem), the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the United Nations Inter-Agency Group for Child Mortality Estimation (UN-IGME), and the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics (PCBS).

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) said that the new study was “further evidence of genocide” being carried out by the Israeli government.

Edward Ahmed Mitchell, deputy executive director for CAIR, called the study “only the latest reason why our government must stop sending American taxpayer dollars to Israel and why international courts must hold Israel accountable for its crimes.” Mitchell added that “all those responsible for this mass slaughter must face accountability, starting with Netanyahu and other members of his openly racist, genocidal, and warmongering regime.”

A report released by UN Conference on Trade and Development earlier this week found that Israel’s genocidal assault has had a devastating impact on Gaza’s economy, finding that its entire population is now living below the poverty line, with per-capita gross domestic product falling to just $161, one of the lowest figures in the world.

Additionally, the report found that the unemployment rate in Gaza was as high as 80%, while inflation in the exclave surged to nearly 240%, as the Israeli military blockade caused a widespread famine by preventing basic necessities from reaching Gaza residents.

UN experts warn continued Israeli ceasefire violations in Gaza undermine the fragile truce

UNITED NATIONS experts have demanded action by the international community to end Israel’s violations of the Gaza ceasefire.

They warned on Monday that continuing attacks on Palestinians in Gaza threaten to derail the fragile truce. 

The UN rapporteurs said in a statement that since the ceasefire between Israel and Palestinian resistance group Hamas took effect on October 10, Israeli forces have committed at least 393 violations, killing 339 Palestinians, including over 70 children and injuring more than 870. 

A massive Israeli air attack on October 28, which killed at least 104 Palestinians, made it the deadliest night since the truce officially began, the experts said.

The 20 experts who signed the statement include Francesca Albanese, special rapporteur on Palestine, George Katrougalos, independent expert on the the promotion of a democratic and equitable international order, and Ashwini KP, special rapporteur on contemporary forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance.

The signatories warned that despite the ceasefire, humanitarian access remains critically limited, with only two of six crossings open, aid deliveries far beneath the agreed targets and hospitals in desperate need of supplies and equipment.

The experts said: “The ongoing Israeli attacks against the Palestinian population in Gaza constitute a blatant violation of the ceasefire agreement.”

There is no ceasefire, but there is an ongoing Nakba and an ongoing genocide

A news report by AlJazeera this week stated that Israel violated the ceasefire 497 times in 44 days since 10 October. Lauded by the international community, the ceasefire was supposed to bring an end to airstrikes, starvation and allow the delivery of humanitarian aid, as well as the return of Palestinians to the rubble of their homes in Gaza. But ceasefire in diplomatic rhetoric falls even short of a veneer as Israel continues its genocide with a slower pace.

Israel can further violate the ceasefire with UN Resolution 2803, which places the US in control of Gaza for Israel’s colonial expansionist plans.  Israel – a genocidal entity that has violated the ceasefire hundreds of times – determines the coordination of the US plan. Which means that as a reward for committing genocide, Israel gets the freedom to determine the pace of genocide, now that the worst has been normalised. 

Even mainstream media is reporting on Israel’s ceasefire violations. Two weeks ago, the BBC noted that Israel destroyed over 1,500 buildings in Gaza since the ceasefire came into effect, although it also made sure to add the comments of an unnamed Israeli military spokesperson saying that Israel was acting “in accordance with the ceasefire framework”. 

According to the US, there was no genocide in Gaza. According to the Palestinian people and the majority of the world’s people, there is genocide in Gaza and there is no ceasefire in Gaza. What term does one coin for a non-existent ceasefire? Or a ceasefire that only exists in diplomatic agreements that provide impunity for Israel’s genocide?

What will the non-existent ceasefire mean in terms of Gaza’s reconstruction and military occupation amid a normalised, slow-paced genocide? There is talk of partitioning Gaza, but the likelihood of colonial expansion is even greater. And all is happening under the guise of a ceasefire with no validity and no implementation. 

The only time we should be uttering the word ceasefire is to point out that there is no ceasefire. Other than that, the entire world should be pointing out that Israel is continuing its colonial expansion through genocide. Ceasefire rhetoric is an imposition upon Palestinians. It renders them defenceless just as much as the genocide did. The Israeli military now controls 53 per cent of Gaza. What did Zionist leaders do when they were granted 55 per cent of Palestine? History is repeating itself and the international community is concealing evident links under ceasefire rhetoric. 

As the international community does its best to fade Israel’s genocide into oblivion, so will Gaza be depleted. The UN will continue with its statistical data, possibly since the “ceasefire”, thus marking an end to what is actually a continuation. And the usual terminology, linked to the non-existent ceasefire, such as humanitarian aid, food, displacement, education, Israel killing Palestinians, will once again be classified as individual violations of international law, instead of actions contributing to an ongoing ethnic cleansing of Palestinians from their land. The ceasefire does not exist, the Nakba never ended, and it is incumbent upon the UN, particularly given its complicity with colonialism, to join the dots for the rest of the world and finally divulge what a travesty it has created out of human rights and international law.

Dozens of tents for displaced Palestinians flooded by heavy rains in southern Gaza

Heavy rains have submerged dozens of tents sheltering displaced Palestinians in the southern Gaza Strip amid bad weather conditions in the enclave, witnesses said Tuesday.

Several tents were destroyed by rainfall in al-Mawasi area of Khan Younis, while others were blown away by strong winds in the area, they told Anadolu.

“The situation in the city is extremely catastrophic due to the destruction of most roads, water, and sewage networks by the Israeli war,” Saib Luqan, a spokesman for Khan Younis Municipality, told Anadolu.

According to local authorities, the Israeli army has destroyed 220,000 linear meters of road networks over the past two years.

Nearly 900,000 people in Khan Younis are currently facing “tragic and grim” conditions due to bad weather conditions, Luqan said.

The spokesman added that municipal teams are working with insufficient equipment to help displaced civilians affected by the bad weather.

According to the Gaza Government Media Office, 1.5 million Palestinians are displaced in Gaza, living in catastrophic conditions with little access to basic necessities and severely limited essential services due to Israel’s ongoing blockade.

Since October 2023, the Israeli army has killed nearly 70,000 people in Gaza, mostly women and children, and injured more than 170,900 people in the two-year war that has left much of the enclave in ruins.

CHANCELLOR Rachel Reeves was branded “deluded” by disability campaigners today after suggesting an extension to her benefit fraud crackdown will help balance the books in tomorrow’s Budget.

The Labour minister has pledged to extend targeted case reviews, which root out inaccuracies in universal credit claims, with the aim of bringing in an extra £1.2 billion by March 2031.

While she is expected to announce the long-awaited scrapping of the two-child benefit cap at a cost of about £3bn, she is also expected to raise taxes to bridge a multibillion-pound gap in her spending plans.

Disabled People Against Cuts co-founder Linda Burnip told the Morning Star: “I think Rachel Reeves must be even more deluded than we thought if she thinks she is going to raise more money from clamping down on benefit fraud which for PIP has never been more than 0.5 per cent and more recently has been zero. 

“We are already seeing people in receipt of social care having their universal credit claims closed wrongly due to having a separate bank account to pay for their social care which is not their money to spend on other items but which is provided by social services departments to solely fund their care. DWP is a complete shambles and not fit for purpose.

“Reeves also fails to grasp the very basic economic principle that growth of the economy will only happen if people have disposable income to spend.”

Fran Heathcote, general secretary of the Public and Commercial Services union which represents job centre staff, added: “A government serious about economic growth should fix the broken social security system and ensure that those with the broadest shoulders contribute more through a fair tax system. 

“There is far more to be gained from going after the billions of tax avoided or evaded by wealthy individuals or large businesses.”
