Hundreds of thousands joined a new general strike across Italy, in solidarity with the people of Gaza and the Global Sumud Flotilla.

Hundreds of thousands of people have again taken to the streets of Italy in response to a general strike call originally launched by the grassroots union Unione Sindacale di Base (USB) and later joined by some of the country’s largest trade union confederations. As they blocked ports, highways, and industrial zones, protesters delivered a resounding rejection of Giorgia Meloni’s government’s complicity in Israel’s genocide in Gaza, demanding an immediate end to the attacks and the release of activists kidnapped from the Global Sumud Flotilla.

“Tens of thousands of people took to the streets for the general strike in support of Palestine: this is a huge success,” Giuliano Granato of the left party Potere al Popolo reported from one of the marches. “It shows that there is a majority in the country that is fighting for Palestine and doing what our government has not dared to do for two years.”

The strike came just days after Israeli forces assaulted dozens of vessels of the Global Sumud Flotilla in international waters, detaining activists, including several Italians. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and other officials failed to act decisively for their protection or release. Instead, they implied Israel had acted with measure and tried to shift the blame on the flotilla for continuing its humanitarian mission despite threats. The government’s attempt to present itself as “sovereignist” fell apart in the face of these events. “This is not a government of sovereignists. This is a government that bows down and prostrates itself before Israel,” Granato said.

In several cities, demonstrators faced heavy police repression. In Padua, more than 10,000 protesters occupying the industrial zone were attacked with water cannons and tear gas. “The march stayed united and we are continuing the blockade,” one participant said. “We want an end to complicity. We want a free Palestine.”

Protesters in Bologna and Naples also pushed through police lines to occupy strategic points. In Naples, at least 50,000 people seized part of the port despite heavy policing. In Bologna, 150,000 blocked major roads. “This is the response of the people to Israel expanding the war, to the government repressing us, to those who want to divide us into good and bad,” Potere al Popolo’s Bologna chapter wrote. “Let’s center our priorities around those who keep this country going every day, with precarious lives, low wages, and insecure jobs. Instead of rearmament and alliances with Israel, let’s lay down arms and raise salaries!”

Union leaders echoed the calls. Maurizio Landini, head of the confederation CGIL, stated: “There are no rights, there is no dignity without peace. True security does not mean increasing spending on weapons, but investing in public health, education, employment, and the redistribution of wealth.”

The strike raised demands for a full arms embargo on Israel, the severing of all ties with the occupation authorities, and an immediate end to the genocide. And there is no end in sight for the mobilization – those who joined the strike are already preparing for Saturday’s national demonstration in Rome, where they will again assert their solidarity and determination to see a free Palestine.

Starmer government ‘not doing anything’ to help UK citizens kidnapped in international waters

The families of the British citizens kidnapped by Israel in international waters this week as they sought to take humanitarian aid to Gaza as part of the Sumud Flotilla have drawn a blank in trying to get government assistance for their release. The Starmer government is “not doing anything” to help, it is alleged.

“Despite official statements claiming that families are being kept informed,” said Samir Asli, “it has now been more than 48 hours and we have still not received any substantial updates from the UK Foreign Office.” Asli’s wife is well-known journalist and activist Yvonne Ridley, a frequent contributor here at Middle East Monitor.

Yvonne was aboard the Omar Al Mokhtar, a humanitarian vessel participating in the peaceful mission to challenge the illegal blockade of Gaza and deliver symbolic aid to a population facing starvation, explained her husband. “On or around 2 October, the boat was intercepted by Israeli forces approximately 70 nautical miles off the coast of Gaza, in international waters, where Israel has no jurisdiction.”

Legal experts have confirmed that such an action constitutes a violation of international law. Indeed, former UK ambassador Craig Murray, who is also a former Head of the Maritime Section of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and Alternate Head of the UK Delegation to the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, has pointed out on social media that the flotilla was intercepted well beyond Israel’s 12-mile territorial waters.

“Moreover,” said Murray, “the Israeli maritime blockade has been in place for 17 years and is an intrinsic part of the long-term occupation found illegal in the International Court of Justice advisory opinion. It is, therefore, not a short-term measure in time of armed conflict as specified in the San Remo manual.” In any event, he added, the San Remo rules explicitly state that humanitarian supplies may not be blockaded. “The UN Commission of Inquiry has already determined that Israel is committing genocide, and the blockade is plainly a part of the machinery of such genocide. As such, the Israeli attack on the flotilla is plainly illegal.”

And yet, according to Samir Asli, a Foreign Office official told him that Yvonne’s actions were “illegal”. He obviously disputes this line. “This official’s job is to keep families informed and supported, not to judge Yvonne’s humanitarian work. Yvonne has always acted from a place of conscience, compassion and international law.”

The only response to their request for help from the family’s local Conservative MP, John Lamont, was a short message suggesting that the government might argue that, “Yvonne was travelling against current UK advice.”

At a time when a number of British citizens have been kidnapped in international waters, local MPs need to demand answers and action, not offer excuses, insisted Asli. “Yvonne and the other humanitarians on the flotilla were on a mission of conscience — to help starving children — and deserve the full support of their government.”

Such an inadequate response from the UK government appears to ignore the fact that, as Craig Murray noted, “On the High Seas, the law applying on each ship is the law of its flag state. An attack by a state military warship on a vessel on the High Seas is an attack on the flag state of the vessel attacked.” In other words, Israel has basically attacked the sovereignty of the states under whose flags the vessels were sailing. “Acts of illegal possession of vessels or abduction of crew on the High Seas should be pursued by each flag state as crimes within their domestic jurisdiction, not only in international law. As such, the Metropolitan Police and Director of Public Prosecutions have an obligation to investigate and act over the abduction of persons from UK-flagged vessels on the High Seas.”

The families of Yvonne Ridley and other British citizens being held unlawfully by Israel are calling upon friends, colleagues and supporters to contact their local MPs to insist that the Starmer government fulfils its responsibilities under British and international law to ensure the swift and safe return of their loved ones.

The Israeli army killed at least five Palestinians, including a young girl, and injured others in ongoing attacks across the Gaza Strip on Saturday, ignoring US President Donald Trump’s call for an immediate halt to the bombardment, Anadolu reports.

Trump had urged Israel to “stop bombing Gaza immediately” after Hamas announced its willingness to release Israeli captives according to his proposal, stating he believed the movement was “ready for lasting peace.”

Medical sources and eyewitnesses told Anadolu that despite the call, Israeli forces struck two homes in Gaza City and in the central Nuseirat refugee camp, leaving at least five dead and several others injured.

Israeli air and artillery strikes also continued across Gaza City and Khan Younis in the south, with intensified demolition operations using drones and explosives targeting residential buildings in multiple areas of Gaza throughout the night.

Since October 2023, Israeli bombardment has killed nearly 66,300 Palestinians, most of them women and children. The UN and rights groups have repeatedly warned that the enclave is being rendered uninhabitable, with starvation and disease spreading rapidly.

New poll shows strong Democratic voter support for US sanctions on Israel

A new poll released Friday found that a majority of voters in US Democratic Party primaries support imposing sanctions on Israel, Anadolu reports.

The survey, done by YouGov, a UK-based international polling firm, for the Institute for Middle East Understanding (IMEU) Policy Project, a Washington-based advocacy group promoting Palestinian rights, and Gen-Z for Change, a youth-led progressive advocacy organization, polled over 1,200 likely Democratic primary voters.

It found that 65% of respondents favor sanctions on Israel, 72% believe Israel is committing genocide in Gaza, and 75% oppose renewing the US memorandum of understanding that provides annual weapons funding to Israel.

Asked about specific measures, 76% supported banning credit extensions through Israeli bonds, 75% backed restricting imports of Israeli-made weapons and cybersecurity software, and 62% supported prohibiting entry into the US for Israeli officials and soldiers.

“As we all witness the ongoing genocide being committed by Israel against Palestinians with our tax dollars, Democratic voters are saying clearly the time has come for comprehensive accountability measures against Israel,” Margaret DeReus, executive director of the IMEU Policy Project, said in a statement.

Generational party divide

Rashida Tlaib, the first Palestinian-American woman to serve in the US House of Representatives, also shared a statement from IMEU saying that sanctions and a complete arms embargo are “necessary to end the genocide and apartheid in Palestine.”

“World leaders must impose economic sanctions and a complete arms embargo immediately,” she wrote.

The poll comes amid growing dissent among Democrats in Congress, where a majority of Senate Democrats voted in late July to block arms sales to Israel.

The Democratic Party has long supported Israel, in large part, but in the face of growing oppression of Palestinians and a new generation of Democrats, the party – and especially its younger voters – have grown increasingly critical of Israel and its policies of occupation and blockades.

Last week, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed a gathering of hand-picked social media influencers, urging them to help “fight back” against Israel’s worsening image among the American public.

The Israeli army has killed over 66,000 Palestinians, most of them women and children, in Gaza following a cross-border attack by Hamas on Israel on Oct. 7, 2023. The relentless bombardment has rendered the enclave all but uninhabitable and led to starvation and the spread of disease.

Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave.

Majority of Germans support EU sanctions on Israel to stop genocide in Gaza

A majority of Germans support the EU imposing sanctions on Israel over its brutal military offensive in Gaza, according to a new poll by public broadcaster ARD, Anadolu reports.

The representative survey found that 55% of Germans now demand that their government back the European Commission’s proposal to suspend trade and customs agreements with Israel.

Just 27% of respondents opposed the potential sanctions, which EU leaders are expected to discuss later this month as a means to pressure the Netanyahu government.

The survey also revealed that a majority of Germans support recognizing Palestine as an independent state, despite Berlin’s current reluctance to do so. According to the findings, 55% of Germans favor formal recognition of Palestine, while only 20% oppose it.

A growing divide has emerged between German public opinion and government policy in recent months, following reports from UN agencies and international NGOs that have documented war crimes and genocide committed by Israeli forces in Gaza.

According to the survey, the percentage of Germans who believe Israel’s military response “goes too far” has increased significantly, from nearly 40% in November 2023 to 63% this month.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, despite being a strong supporter of Israel, has recently intensified his criticism of Israel’s military campaign in Gaza amid mounting domestic and international pressure.

However, despite this shift in tone, he has so far refused to join other European countries in calling for the suspension of trade deals with Israel or imposing sanctions against far-right Israeli ministers.

Last month, the German government found itself diplomatically isolated when its close allies—France, the UK, and several other European partners, including Belgium, Portugal, and Malta—announced their recognition of Palestinian statehood, while Berlin maintained its opposition to such recognition.
