Any attempt to block Gaza-bound flotilla is ‘attack’ on int’l law, warns rights group

Amnesty International on Monday urged Israel to allow an international flotilla aiming to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza, warning that any attempt to block it would be an attack on humanitarian principles and international law, Anadolu reports.

The UK-based rights group praised activists of the Global Sumud Flotilla initiative over its “powerful & inspiring act of solidarity” with Palestinians, who are struggling to survive under Israel’s cruel and unlawful blockade and amidst its ongoing genocide in the occupied Gaza Strip.”

“Israel must allow the flotilla to carry out its peaceful mission safely. Any attempt to block it is an attack on humanitarian principles and international law,” Amnesty International said on US social media company X.

It said the fact that activists from nearly 50 countries have resorted to launching this mission is an “indictment of the international community’s consistent failure” to press Israel to end its inhumane blockade.

Defining the crippling situation in Gaza as “one of the worst manmade humanitarian disasters in the world,” the rights group stressed that Israel has an obligation to ensure civilians in Gaza have sufficient access to food, medicine, and other supplies.

“There can be no justification for obstructing life-saving aid,” it said, calling on Israel to lift its blockade, allow free flow of humanitarian aid, and end its genocide against Palestinians in Gaza.

“We call also on states take meaningful action to end impunity and uphold international humanitarian law,” the statement said.

The flotilla of more than 20 boats that set sail Sunday to break Israel’s siege of Gaza returned to the port of Barcelona on Monday due to a storm.

Around 200 activists, politicians, and artists from 44 countries began their voyage after a large rally in support of their mission.

Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg, Irish actor Liam Cunningham, Spanish actor Eduardo Fernandez, and former Barcelona Mayor Ada Colau are part of the mission.

This is the third aid ship of its kind in recent months to attempt to break the Israeli blockade of Gaza.

Previous attempts have been unsuccessful, with Israeli forces intercepting the boats in international waters.

131 Israeli journalists call for end to Tel Aviv’s targeting of press members in Gaza

A group of 131 Israeli journalists have signed a petition demanding an immediate end to Israel’s targeting of Palestinian reporters in Gaza and calling for an independent investigation into the killings of media workers during the war, Anadolu reports.

The petition, titled “Journalists Call to End the War,” condemned a systematic assault on press freedom in Gaza.

“We are horrified by the continued killing of journalists in Gaza,” the signatories wrote, adding that those still alive “work under bombardment, without homes, power or internet, and often without food for themselves or their families.”

The journalists cited figures from the New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists showing that 168 reporters have been killed in Israeli attacks on Gaza.

Gaza’s Government Media Office has put the overall death toll of journalists at 247 since October 2023.

The petition accused the Israeli government of deliberately blocking media access by preventing foreign correspondents from entering Gaza, despite repeated appeals to the Supreme Court by the Foreign Press Association.

It also expressed solidarity with Palestinian journalists and demanded accountability.

“We call on our government to stop these attacks immediately and to allow a full, independent investigation into the deaths of our colleagues,” the statement said.

Beyond the battlefield, the signatories criticized Israeli newsrooms for failing to cover the humanitarian toll of the war.

“This militarized framing, justified as serving the public interest, denies Israeli society the information it needs to understand reality,” the petition read. The journalists said military censorship, coupled with self-censorship in many outlets, has severely damaged press freedom.

Some media, they warned, have even provided space for “explicit calls to commit war crimes and genocide, alongside relentless racist incitement.”

“We believe our human duty is to demand an immediate end to this war, a deal to release captives, and the start of rebuilding Gaza, and rebuilding our lives. We also call for long-term solutions based on peace, equality, security and freedom for everyone in this land.”

The appeal coincided with a global campaign launched Monday by Reporters Without Borders (RSF) and advocacy group Avaaz, with media outlets in 50 countries darkening front pages, displaying banners on news websites, and broadcasting solidarity messages to denounce Israel’s killing of journalists in Gaza.

Israel has killed over 63,500 Palestinians in Gaza since October 2023. The military campaign has devastated the enclave, which is facing famine.

Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.

Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave.

The civilian death toll in Gaza is staggering, and journalists are put at particular risk when they run to danger to report as others try to escape. But the killing of so many who have been clearly identified as members of the media, in some cases after they were threatened over their work or smeared, leaves no doubt that they have been targeted. This is “the deadliest and most deliberate effort to kill and silence journalists that CPJ has ever documented”, the organisation has said. “Palestinian journalists are being threatened, directly targeted and murdered by Israeli forces, and are arbitrarily detained and tortured in retaliation for their work.”

Journalists in Gaza work in unbearable conditions – hungry and exhausted, breaking off reporting to find food for their families, help carry bodies from rubble or assist wounded relatives in finding shelter. Many are separated from those they love; many have buried loved ones. All know that in bearing witness, they increase the danger that they face. They carry on to defend the truth against Israel’s attempts to extinguish it. They must be defended themselves.

Prospectus proposes forced displacement of entire population and puts territory into US trusteeship

A plan circulating in the White House to develop the “Gaza Riviera” as a string of high-tech megacities has been dismissed as an “insane” attempt to provide cover for the large-scale ethnic cleansing of the Palestinian territory’s population.

On Sunday the Washington Post published a leaked prospectus for the plan, which would involve the forced displacement of Gaza’s entire population of 2 million people and put the territory into a US trusteeship for at least a decade.

Named the Gaza Reconstitution, Economic Acceleration and Transformation Trust – or Great – the proposal was reportedly developed by some of the same Israelis who created and set in motion the US- and Israeli-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation with financial planning contributed by Boston Consulting Group.

Most controversially, the 38-page plan suggests what it calls “temporary relocation of all of Gaza’s more than 2 million population” – a proposal that would amount to ethnic cleansing, potentially a genocidal act.

Palestinians would be encouraged into “voluntary” departure to another country or into restricted, secure zones during reconstruction. Those who own land would be offered “a digital token” by the trust in exchange for rights to redevelop their property, to be used to finance a new life elsewhere.
