In Gaza, silence has become the only language left for thousands of children who have survived the ongoing genocide but not its psychological aftermath.

In recent months, international and local organisations have documented a surge in cases of children losing the ability to speak—not due to physical injuries, but because of the unbearable psychological trauma of war.

According to a report by the Gaza Community Mental Health Program (GCMHP), increasing numbers of children exhibit severe post-traumatic symptoms, including chronic nightmares, hypersensitivity to loud sounds, and bedwetting. Many remain completely silent despite having no damage to their vocal cords.

Doctors identify this condition as “traumatic mutism”—a psychological disorder in which overwhelming fear or shock silences a child’s voice, forcing them to communicate instead through gestures, looks, or repetitive movements.

“Psychological exhaustion in Gaza has become widespread,” said Dr Yasser Abu Jamea, Director of the GCMHP. “Medical teams are working under conditions of annihilation that make the continuation of treatment nearly impossible.”

A doctor with Doctors Without Borders (MSF) described the situation starkly: “A child in Gaza doesn’t live with the memory of one airstrike—they live waiting for the next.”

Speech therapist Heba Haidar, a specialist in language and swallowing disorders, told Quds Press that reports from UNICEF and the World Health Organisation (WHO) have confirmed cases of stuttering and speech loss directly linked to exposure to Israeli bombings.

“Children pulled from beneath the rubble have stopped speaking,” Haidar said. “Even adolescents are struggling to form words—as if language itself has broken under the weight of trauma.”

Before the latest escalation, more than half of Gaza’s children already showed symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder, according to mental health surveys. Now, Haidar warns, those psychological wounds have deepened into a “linguistic and emotional collapse” that threatens an entire generation.

Efforts by therapists abroad to provide remote treatment have been obstructed by power cuts, communication blackouts, and continued bombardment. “Specialists in Jordan have tried to volunteer their services to children in Gaza,” Haidar revealed, “but ongoing shelling and the total collapse of communication networks have made these efforts nearly impossible.”

She cautioned that experiences from Rwanda, Bosnia, and Syria show that untreated war trauma can persist across generations if children are not provided with psychological care today.

Despite the devastation, Haidar believes that an “urgent psychological response plan” can still be implemented inside Gaza. She envisins mobile mental health units in displacement camps, child-centered play therapy, and structured pronunciation exercises for children with speech loss—alongside remote support programs coordinated with international experts. “The world must listen to Gaza’s silent children,” Haidar said. “They are not just victims of war—they are survivors losing their voices. Helping them speak again means helping them reclaim their humanity.”

Since October 2023, Israeli forces—backed by US and European support—have waged a campaign of destruction across the Gaza Strip, defying international appeals and orders from the International Court of Justice to halt the assault.

The genocide has left more than 238,000 Palestinians dead or wounded, most of them women and children. Over 11,000 remain missing, while famine, displacement, and the near-total destruction of Gaza’s infrastructure have erased entire neighbourhoods from the map.

Keir Starmer objects to criticism of the IDF. He asks how could anyone object to them starving people to death, forced marches like the Nazis did, bombing Gaza's hospitals and universities, mass-murdering journalists, healthworkers and starving people queuing for food, killing and raping prisoners and murdering children. He calls for people to stop obstructing his genocide for Israel.

The Gaza government said that 97 Palestinians had been killed and 230 others injured as a result of 80 violations carried out by the Israeli army since the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip took effect on 10 October. It added that 21 of those violations occurred on Sunday, resulting in the deaths of 44 people.

In a statement, the government’s media office in Gaza said that “the occupation has committed 80 documented violations since the announcement of the ceasefire, in a clear breach of international humanitarian law.”

The statement noted that the violations included direct shooting at civilians, deliberate airstrikes and shelling, the use of heavy fire belts, and the arrest of civilians.

It added that the Israeli army carried out these attacks using military vehicles and tanks stationed at the edges of residential areas, as well as electronic cranes equipped with remote sensing and targeting systems, and warplanes and drones of the Quad-Copter type used for direct targeting.

The statement confirmed that “these violations have been recorded in all governorates of the Gaza Strip without exception, which proves that the occupation has not complied with the ceasefire and continues its policy of killing and terror against our people.”

According to official figures, these attacks have resulted in “97 deaths and more than 230 injuries of varying degrees since the signing of the ceasefire agreement.”

The Gaza government held the Israeli army fully responsible for these violations and called on the United Nations and the guarantors of the ceasefire agreement to take urgent action to stop the assaults.

The Palestinian Authority’s Colonisation and Wall Resistance Commission (CWRC) announced on Sunday that the Israeli army has seized approximately 17 acres (70 dunams) of land from several villages in the Nablus Governorate for “military and security purposes”.

In a statement published on its website, the Commission stated: “The Israeli occupation authorities have taken control of 17 acres and 147 square metres of land through a military order, affecting areas in the villages of Qaryut, Al-Lubban Al-Sharqiya and Al-Sawiya in Nablus Governorate.”

According to the Commission, the seizure aims to “establish a buffer zone around the Eli settlement”.

The military order permits objections within one week of issuance; however, the order is dated 21 September, 2025. The Commission highlighted that “the Israeli authorities published the military order after the objection period had already expired”.

The Commission further noted that “since the beginning of 2025, the occupation authorities have issued 53 military land seizure orders for various military purposes — marking a significant increase in the use of such orders to take control of Palestinian land”.

To mark two years since what it termed “the war of extermination”, the Commission reported that Israeli authorities have seized 13590.796 (55,000 dunams) of land and established 25 buffer zones around settlements during that time.

Since the beginning of the Israeli military offensive on Gaza, the Commission stated that attacks in the occupied West Bank have also intensified. At least 1,056 Palestinians have been killed, around 10,000 injured, and over 20,000 arrested — including 1,600 children — since the start of the Gaza assault.

Sudan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Mohieddin Salem Ahmed, has condemned the use of starvation tactics by armed militias in El Fasher, describing them as “no less heinous than the crimes committed by Israel.”

Speaking during his participation in the Aswan Forum for Peace and Development in Egypt, Salem expressed Khartoum’s appreciation for Cairo’s efforts in supporting Sudan’s security, stability, and national institutions, including the Sudanese Armed Forces.

He highlighted Egypt’s role in dedicating a special session on Sudan during the forum to discuss ways to end the ongoing conflict “in accordance with the visions set by the Sudanese government and derived from the aspirations of the Sudanese people.”

The foreign minister reaffirmed that the transitional government, appointed by Transitional Sovereignty Council Chairman Lt Gen Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and led by Dr Kamil Idris, remains committed to advancing peace and reconstruction efforts across the country.

Salem said the government’s top priority is implementing the national roadmap announced by al-Burhan, which aims to strengthen the peace process, rebuild infrastructure, and restore essential services such as roads and education.

He further underscored Sudan’s desire to establish regional and international partnerships that contribute to peace, reconstruction, and development, saying such cooperation would benefit both Sudan and the broader international community.

The Fraud serialisation, Part Seven: ‘brickgate’, homophobia, and Angela Eagle

Spread the love

Canary is serialising Paul Holden’s book ‘The Fraud’

Ahmed then moved to work with Angela Eagle MP, who would soon challenge Corbyn for leadership of the Labour Party. During this period, Ahmed amplified an allegation that angry Corbynites had smashed Eagle’s window with a brick after she announced her leadership challenge. This incident had been dubbed ‘Brickgate’ in the media. In the midst of the resulting furore, Ahmed released a press statement on behalf of Eagle’s office that included numerous questionable claims for which he was later chastised by independent media. Ahmed’s statement, for example, alleged that a planned event at a Luton hotel where Eagle was slated to appear had been cancelled because the venue received threats.

Alas, the hotel quickly pooh-poohed the story. ‘Brickgate’, an entirely ludicrous affair, would nevertheless bolster the media narrative that left-wing members of the Labour Party who supported Corbyn were intolerant reprobates. It was a narrative that Ahmed and McSweeney would continue to foster, covertly, when they started working together in 2018.

Dogged investigations by independent bloggers and media outlets revealed that Eagle’s office window had not been smashed (it was instead a window on the ground floor in a shared office stairwell); the police had no evidence this incident was linked to Eagle; and there was no evidence the window had been broken by a brick. It eventually emerged that there wasn’t even a brick on the scene – just a stray piece of masonry on the road, which may or may not have played a role in the damage. Nobody knew, in fact, what had broken the window, or who had done it, or why – yet the incident still somehow retains its force as a shorthand for the alleged thuggishness of Corbynism.

Unsubstantiated accusations of homophobia

Brickgate was part of a broader attempt to defend Eagle’s position against the real prospect that her mostly leftwing constituency would organise and vote to deselect her. It coincided with an allegation made by Eagle’s supporters, and then by Eagle herself, that, at a critical meeting where left-wingers won control of the local Constituency Labour Party (CLP), members had engaged in rampant homophobia, including limping their wrists at a young gay man. The claim was never properly substantiated. It was also fiercely disputed by people who, unlike Eagle, were physically present at the meeting.

Emma Runswick, the self-identified ‘queer’ daughter of the CLP meeting’s chair Kathy Runswick, wrote in the New Statesman of how unimaginable it would be that her loving, accepting mother would ever tolerate such gross and blatant homophobia. In fact, the day after the meeting at which Kathy was said to have allowed homophobia to run amok (and at which she was elected chair of the CLP), she attended her daughter’s wedding – to another woman. Unsurprisingly, despite years of investigations and alarmist reporting, not a single individual was ever sanctioned or found guilty of homophobia in this case.

Nevertheless, Eagle’s supporters flooded the bureaucracy with complaints alleging that homophobia at the meeting, alongside a generalised air of left-wing menace, meant it was no longer safe or appropriate for the CLP to convene meetings. Of course, if the party agreed, the newly elected left-wing leadership of the CLP would be unable to move motions that could censure Eagle – or seek to replace her as an MP. Emails show that at this time, Labour Party bureaucrats opposed to the Corbyn leadership were working with Eagle to ensure her CLP remained suspended in order to prevent her deselection.
