JEREMY CORBYN demanded the government back justice for the Palestinian people today as MPs debated the Gaza crisis.

Urging the government to support a ceasefire in the impending UN security council vote, Mr Corbyn said an end to hostilities was vital to “stop escalation in the Red Sea and the Mediterranean.”

He said without an end to Israel’s occupation of the West Bank, justice for Palestinian refugees and a halt to the siege of Gaza “we will be back here again” in the years ahead.

Labour MP Zarah Sultana joined other MPs in demanding that the government “listen to growing calls for a global ceasefire” after describing harrowing conditions in Gaza hospitals, where vinegar and washing-up liquid are being used to disinfect wounds.

The mood over Gaza seemed to be shifting across the Commons, with veteran Tory back-bench MP Edward Leigh saying that Conservatives were growing more concerned about Israel’s “indiscriminate bombing” and that it was “not in our interest” to be associated with the onslaught.

https://transformpolitics.uk/about/

This is an era of crisis: climate change, the cost of living, the erosion of democracy and the spread of war.

We urgently need an answer. But in Britain, while the Tory party fuels these crises, the Labour Party is failing to provide an alternative.

The right wing has regained control of Labour. Jeremy Corbyn, and his politics that inspired millions across our society, have been cast out.

Labour now opposes a ceasefire in Gaza, doesn’t support strikes, rejects nationalisation, refuses to defend refugees, and won’t scrap student fees – or even the two-child benefit cap.

Keir Starmer has overseen the driving out of 200,000 Labour members. ‘The many’ who supported Labour politics from 2015 to 2019 are denied a political voice.

We need a political organisation that offers a real solution: one that challenges the system at the root of every crisis we face.

Over recent months, organisations and individuals from the labour and trade union movement have come together to discuss a way forward. These include existing left parties, Breakthrough, Left Unity and the Liverpool Community Independents, together with others who were in the Labour Party and more from across the left.

Now we’ve taken the next step: founding a new party of the left.

Shadow minister tells health service ‘money is tight’ and that it must provide better value for taxpayers

The shadow health secretary has accused the NHS of using every winter crisis and challenge it faces as an excuse to ask for more money.

Speaking on a visit to Singapore, Wes Streeting said the health service needs to accept “money is tight”, and that it must rethink how the care it provides could provide better value for money for the taxpayer.

“I think people working in the NHS and the patients using the NHS can see examples of waste and inefficiency,” he told the Sunday Times. “I don’t think it’s good enough that the NHS uses every winter crisis and every challenge it faces as an excuse to ask for more money.”

He added: “The NHS is going to have to get used to the fact that money is tight and it’s going to have to get used to switching spend, and rethinking where and how care is delivered to deliver better outcomes for patients and better value for taxpayers’ money. At the moment, I think we get the worst of all worlds, which is poor outcomes alongside poor value for taxpayers.

“I’m willing to give people more freedom to innovate and create as long as they deliver. That’s the tough love that people can look forward to if I become the health and social care secretary.”

Labour ‘won’t turn on spending taps’ leader says in speech to woo big business

AUSTERITY is Labour’s economic agenda, … Keir Starmer announced today in a further lurch to the right.

A Labour government will not “turn on the spending taps,” the Labour leader said in remarks aimed at appeasing the City and the Treasury.

He acknowledged that public services are “on their knees” but offered little prospect of getting them back on their feet again.

… Keir has prioritised bringing down debt and has vowed not to increase taxes on business or the wealthy, leaving himself no room to repair the damage wrought by 15 years of capitalist crisis.

This latest dilution of Labour’s plans for government came just a day after Sir Keir went out of his way to praise former Tory prime minister Margaret Thatcher for shaking Britain out of its “stupor.”

A Momentum spokesperson said today that “these are deeply worrying remarks from Keir Starmer.

“Instead of laying out a popular alternative based on public ownership and public investment, the Labour leadership is adopting the Tories’ failed economic approach.

“Starmer’s stance isn’t just out of touch with Labour members and voters — but with the public too.”

Liverpool Independents launch fundraiser to fight Eagle in next general election

Original article republished from the Skwawkbox.

The Liverpool Community Independents (LCI) group announced last week that it will stand a candidate to challenge Labour incumbent MP Maria Eagle in the Liverpool Garston constituency at the next general election, because – as a last straw – her decision to abstain on a Commons vote earlier this month calling for a ceasefire in Israel’s slaughter of civilians in Gaza.

Labour has cause to worry – in May, the working-class south Liverpool community threw out Labour, which heavily lost both its council seats heavily to LCI’s Lucy Williams and Sam Gorst, despite a disgusting Labour smear campaign in the election. But the group will need an even greater influx of resources and volunteers to win the parliamentary seat.

LCI leader Alan Gibbons – who trounced Labour in May in Orrell Park in the north of the city – has said that the decision to fight Eagle for the seat is a ‘historical necessity’ after the abstention.

As a first step, the group has launched a crowdfunder with a target of £15,000 to create a campaign fund for the seat. Readers who would like to contribute toward the effort can do so here.
