Signs of growing shock within Israeli political and military circles are emerging over Hezbollah’s military capabilities, with officials acknowledging that previous intelligence assessments may have significantly underestimated the group’s strength.

The reassessment follows Hezbollah’s forceful entry into the confrontation alongside the ongoing regional war involving Iran, prompting concerns in Israel about the prospect of a prolonged war of attrition.

According to Hebrew media reports and analysis, earlier Israeli evaluations suggested that Hezbollah’s capabilities had weakened, particularly after disruptions to supply lines linked to developments in Syria.

However, recent battlefield developments appear to have contradicted those assumptions.

Momen Miqdad, a researcher specialising in Israeli affairs, said a state of surprise now prevails within the Israeli establishment, particularly given Hezbollah’s military performance after months of relative silence.

“Hezbollah maintained silence despite Israeli strikes and assassinations targeting its members in southern Lebanon, which gave the occupation the false impression that its capabilities had declined,” he said.

Miqdad added that Israeli media outlets, including Channel 12, had previously reported intelligence assessments indicating that Hezbollah had become weaker than in previous years.

“These assessments have now been proven inaccurate by developments on the ground,” he said.

The shift in perception has raised concerns within Israel about the scale of Hezbollah’s preparedness and the potential for an extended and costly confrontation along the northern front.

Tehran has warned the United States that it will respond if there are any new attacks on its oil facilities on Kharg Island, Iranian Armed Forces spokesman Abu al-Fazl Shekarchi told Tasnim News Agency on Monday.

Shekarchi said Iran would destroy all oil and gas facilities of any country involved in such attacks.

On Saturday, US forces struck around 90 Iranian military targets on the island, a key hub for Iran’s oil exports, US Central Command (CENTCOM) said.

US President Donald Trump also warned that any interference with shipping through the Strait of Hormuz would lead to action against Iran’s oil infrastructure on the island.

Anti-war campaigners slam Lib Dem leader’s calls for Britain to build its own nuclear deterrent

ANTI-WAR campaigners hit back today at Lib Dem leader Sir Ed Davey’s calls for Britain to build its own nuclear deterrent, warning his plans were “a disaster” that would provoke further wars.

Peace activists slammed the proposals saying the hundreds of billions needed to build such an arsenal would mean deep cuts to public services and would “drive up poverty and social deprivation.”

Sir Ed’s comments come amid renewed scrutiny over the so-called special relationship with the US as Britain risks being dragged further into the war in the Middle East.

Fears of a global energy crisis grow as Strait of Hormuz remains closed

Fire and plumes of smoke rises after a drone struck a fuel tank forcing the temporary suspension of flights near Dubai International Airport, in United Arab Emirates, early March 16, 2026

FEARS of a global energy crisis rose today as the war in the Middle East raged on.

The United States and Israel continued their illegal and unprovoked war on Iran as they bombarded the Iranian capital Tehran and Israel maintained its assault on Lebanon.

An Iranian drone strike temporarily shut Dubai’s airport, a crucial global travel hub, underscoring the threats to the world economy.

The war, which began on February 28, has seen Iran hit back by attacking Israel and US bases in the region, and Gulf Arab countries’ energy infrastructure.

The Iranians have also closed the Strait of Hormuz through which a fifth of the world’s oil is transported. That has dramatically increased the price of oil and put pressure on Washington to do something to ease the pain for consumers.

Brent crude, the international standard, remained more than $100 (£75) a barrel on Monday.

US President Donald Trump said that he has sent a demand to seven countries to send warships to keep the Strait of Hormuz open.

The US president said on Sunday that he wanted these other nations to help police the strait to make it safe for shipping, with his party increasingly concerned that rising prices for US consumers will hurt the Republicans in November’s mid-term elections.

‘No Quarter’ Declaration by Pete Hegseth ‘Constitutes a War Crime’: Experts

“The Pentagon’s law of war manual states unequivocally that such statements are war crimes,” said a legal scholar who previously worked in the Pentagon’s office of general counsel.

Pentagon Secretary Pete Hegseth’s statement last week that “no quarter” will be given to “our enemies” in Iran—a declaration, in military parlance, that surrendering combatants will be executed rather than taken prisoner—constituted a clear violation of international law and a war crime.

The International Committee of the Red Cross explains that “the prohibition on declaring that no quarter will be given is a longstanding rule of customary international law already recognized in the Lieber Code, the Brussels Declaration, and the Oxford Manual and codified in the Hague Regulations.” The Hague Convention of 1907, to which the US is a party, says it is “especially forbidden” to “declare that no quarter will be given.”

Hegseth Calling Rules of Engagement ‘Stupid,’ Critics Warn, Opens Door to War Crimes in Iran

During a press conference on Friday, Hegseth said that US forces attacking Iran “will keep pushing, keep advancing; no quarter, no mercy for our enemies.”

Hegseth’s statement sparked alarm among legal experts and members of Congress, particularly in the context of the Pentagon chief’s ongoing efforts to loosen legal oversight of American forces and roll back rules aimed at protecting civilians.

“’No quarter’ isn’t some wannabe tough guy line—it means something,” said Sen. Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.), a retired US Navy officer. “An order to give no quarter would mean to take no prisoners and kill them instead. That would violate the law of armed conflict. It would be an illegal order. It would also put American service members at greater risk. Pete Hegseth should know better than to throw around terms like this.”

Oona Hathaway, a legal scholar and former special counsel to the Pentagon’s general counsel, wrote in response to Hegseth’s remarks that “declaring that no quarter will be given unequivocally violates international humanitarian law.”

“Indeed, ordering that no quarter will be given, threatening an adversary therewith, or conducting hostilities on this basis is prohibited and constitutes a war crime,” Hathaway added.

Daniel Maurer, a retired Army lieutenant colonel and judge advocate—a profession that Hegseth has treated with contemptwrote a “hypothetical legal memorandum” advising the Pentagon chief to “publicly retract” his “no quarter” statement, warning that it “may expose you to criminal liability under 18 USC 2441(c)(2), and expose any subordinate servicemembers who carry it out to prosecution under the Uniform Code of Military Justice as well as 18 USC 2441(c)(2).”

Maurer continued:

Given that “no quarter” is a clear violation of the Hague Convention IV and, as a consequence, U.S. federal law, we recommend the following immediate actions:

a. Publicly retract the comments and disavow any intention to induce, inspire, counsel, encourage, incite, order, threaten, tolerate, or give “no quarter” to Iranian combatants.

b. Communicate through the chain-of-command conducting Operation Epic Fury that “no quarter” is a war crime that will be thoroughly investigated and prosecuted under the Uniform Code of Military Justice or 18 USC § 2441.

Hegseth’s declaration of “no quarter” conflicts with US President Donald Trump’s statement late last month announcing the illegal war on Iran, which is now in its third week with no end in sight.

Urging Iranian soldiers to lay down their arms, Trump pledged, “We’ll give you immunity.”

Ryan Goodman, founding co-editor-in-chief of the digital law and policy journal Just Security, told Axios that Hegseth is “putting the American military on a track to lawlessness in which we will lose more and more allies.” Goodman noted that in the wake of the Second World War, the US prosecuted senior German military officials for refusing quarter to enemy soldiers.

“The best thing Secretary Hegseth can do for the country and for the US military is to say he misspoke and to retract the statement,” said Goodman, who previously worked in the Defense Department’s office of general counsel. “The Pentagon’s law of war manual states unequivocally that such statements are war crimes.”
