Others in the Trump administration have walked back the lie that Pretti was a “would-be-assassin.” Vance isn’t sorry.

Vice President JD Vance is refusing to apologize to the family of Alex Pretti after defaming the Minnesotan in order to justify his killing by Customs and Border Protection agents late last month on the streets of Minneapolis.

Video shows Pretti, a 37-year-old intensive care unit nurse, was shot at least ten times by a pair of agents after being disarmed of a handgun, which he was carrying legally according to local police.

Within hours of the incident, the Trump administration had already begun to run with false claims that Pretti had “brandished” his weapon at agents, which were immediately disproven by video. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, who first made the claim, has since backed off that characterization following criticism.

On social media, Vance shared a post in which senior White House adviser Stephen Miller described Pretti as a “would-be-assassin” who sought to “murder federal agents,” a claim for which they have still not provided any evidence weeks later.

President Donald Trump himself told reporters last week that he did not believe Pretti was an assassin, even acknowledging that the shooting was a “mistake.”

Even Miller, who rarely backs down from even the most extreme and outrageous statements, has since acknowledged that agents may not have been following protocol when they shot Pretti.

But Vance is not sorry. During an interview with the Daily Mail on Tuesday, wheninterviewer Philip Nieto asked if the vice president would apologize to Pretti’s family, he retorted, “For what?” with a smirk.

“For, you know, labeling him an assassin with ill intent,” Nieto answered.

“I just described to you what I said about Alex Pretti, which is that he’s a guy who showed up with ill intent to an ICE protest,” Vance responded, referring to Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Nieto then asked if Vance would apologize if an FBI probe opened last week found that the officers involved in the shooting had violated Pretti’s civil rights.

Vance, appearing exasperated, sighed, “So if this hypothetical leads to that hypothetical leads to another hypothetical—”

Nieto then interjected, “It’s a real case that’s open.”

“Like I said, we’re gonna let the investigation determine,” Vance said.

Then, in the ultimate dose of irony, he continued: “I don’t think it’s smart to prejudge the investigation, I don’t think it’s fair to those ICE officers,” he said, misidentifying the agency responsible for the shooting as ICE rather than CBP.

He notably did not give his thoughts on whether it was similarly unfair to “prejudge” Pretti as an attempted murderer within hours of his killing.

A clip of the interaction garnered immediate disgust online.

Ken Martin, the chair of the Democratic National Committeesaid that “JD Vance had the opportunity to be a normal human being and show some empathy for the family of a man who was murdered. To nobody’s surprise, he’s doubling down on being an asshole.”

Pedro Gonzalez, a right-wing activist who has since become fiercely critical of the Trump administration, said that with his “little smile after ‘for what,’” Vance appeared to be “relishing the opportunity to seem cold-blooded.”

He added, “What Vance really is at heart is a hollow shell of a man who defends the murderers of American citizens more vigorously than he has ever defended his own family from the bigots he’s trying to court for 2028.”

John Ganz, the author of the newsletter Unpopular Front, simply said Vance is the “most repulsive person in politics, and there is stiff competition.”

Citing Threat of ‘Authoritarian Regime,’ Judge Orders ICE to Stop Tear-Gassing Protesters in Oregon

In “a well-functioning constitutional democratic republic,” said US District Judge Michael Simon, “free speech, courageous newsgathering, and nonviolent protest are all permitted, respected, and even celebrated.”

Warning that President Donald Trump’s crackdown on immigrant communities, protesters who speak out for civil and human rights, and journalists who are reporting on the president’s mass deportation campaign has placed the nation at a “crossroads,” a US judge on Tuesday temporarily barred federal agents from launching tear gas, projectiles, and other chemicals at demonstrators in Portland, Oregon.

US District Judge Michael Simon in the District of Oregon ruled that for at least the next 14 days—a period that could be extended—federal agents with the Department of Homeland Security or other agencies can no longer use chemical or projectile munitions like tear gas or pepper balls unless the specific target poses an imminent threat of physical harm to a law enforcement officer or someone else.

Officers are also prohibited from firing any munition at a person’s head, neck, or torso except in cases where deadly force would be justified, and from using a less lethal munition if doing so would endanger someone who doesn’t pose an imminent threat.

Simon emphasized that he arrived at the ruling in order to preserve the United States’ status as “a well-functioning constitutional democratic republic.”

In such a country, wrote Simon, free speech, courageous newsgathering, and nonviolent protest are all permitted, respected, and even celebrated.“

“In an authoritarian regime, that is not the case,” he continued. “Our nation is now at a crossroads. We have been here before and have previously returned to the right path, notwithstanding an occasional detour. In helping our nation find its constitutional compass, an impartial and independent judiciary operating under the rule of law has a responsibility that it may not shirk.”

The ruling pertains to the vicinity of the Portland Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Building, which has been at the center of protests against the agency’s arrests and detention of immigrants in the Portland area.

Simon handed down the ruling days after thousands of residents assembled near the building to speak out against Trump’s anti-immigration agenda, in which a majority of the people who have been detained in recent months have had no criminal records despite the president’s claims that ICE is targeting the “worst of the worst” violent offenders. DHS agents have shot at least 13 people since September, and have killed two—Renee Good and Alex Pretti in Minneapolis. An off-duty ICE agent also fatally shot Keith Porter in Los Angeles.

The protest on Saturday in Portland was nonviolent and family-friendly, with children and senior citizens among those who gathered to speak out against the killings, deportations, and detentions.

But ICE agents nonetheless deployed tear gas at the crowd. They did so again the next day when hundreds of protesters rallied at City Hall and marched to the ICE Building. DHS claimed the protesters “threw objects at law enforcement and rocks at cameras.” lreported that it had not verified those claims.

The ACLU, which filed a legal complaint to the judge Sunday night on behalf of protesters who had been affected by ICE’s use of tear gas, said Tuesday that “not only are DHS’s extreme actions violating protesters’ First Amendment rights, but they also pose an imminent risk that officers will seriously maim or kill someone, as they have done repeatedly within the last few weeks in other parts of the country.”

Kelly Simon, the legal director for ACLU of Oregon, said that “it has been inspiring to see Oregonians rising together with love, nonviolence, and creativity to oppose the Trump administration’s cruelty.”

“The Department of Homeland Security’s pattern of violently retaliating against protesters and documenters flies in the face of any notion of order, safety, or freedom,” she said. “This ruling affirms that, in Oregon, we still love our neighbors and believe in the power of our constitutional freedoms, including the freedoms of assembly, speech, and the press, to build a better future for all of us.”

In its filing, the ACLU described several alleged acts of violence and excessive force by federal agents against peaceful protesters and journalists, including the use of a chemical impact munition against an 84-year-old woman who was “peacefully holding a sign on a public street” when she was hit in the head. She walked home “soaked in blood” and was later diagnosed with a concussion at an emergency department.

A freelance journalist was also allegedly shot in the groin with projectile munitions and suffered bruises, and on another occasion was maced in the face by an officer.

Jack Dickinson, a protester who has been dubbed the Portland Chicken for the chicken costume he’s worn at anti-ICE demonstrations, said he was “grateful that Judge Simon agreed that cruelty is not an appropriate response to dissent.”

“Since June, the Trump regime has subjected people in Portland to chemical weapons and violence because they are offended by our words,” said Dickinson. “This administration should hear our grievances and halt their barbaric treatment of our communities. Until then, I hope Portland will continue to show up and exercise our First Amendment rights. Our voices are needed most in times like now.”

Federal agents’ use of tear gas and other chemicals also prompted a separate lawsuit recently, with a property management company joining a group of residents in an apartment building about 100 feet from the ICE building suing DHS because tear gas has clouded their homes for months—forcing some to sleep wearing gas masks.

One resident said she was also struck by rubber bullets that left her with welts and bruises.

Lawsuits challenging federal agents’ deployment of chemicals and munitions have also been filed in Minnesota and Chicago.

An evidentiary hearing is scheduled for March 2 in Simon’s courtroom regarding the question of whether the court should grant a preliminary injunction, further limiting the use of tear gas and other weapons against protesters and journalists.

Immigrants Delivered $14.5 Trillion Surplus to US Economy Over Last 30 Years: Report

The analysis by the Cato Institute shows in detail why it’s a lie to believe that immigrants are “sucking us dry,” a familiar argument by anti-immigrant nativists like Stephen Miller. (Image: Keith Negley/via Cato Institute report art)

A groundbreaking new report released Tuesday details how immigrants in the United States over the last three decades have contributed a massive surplus to the nation’s economy, resulting in a total of more than $14 trillion over that period due to the fact that immigrant families generate significantly more benefits to fiscal health than they take away in the form of benefits received or downside costs.

The white paper by the libertarian free-marketeers at the Cato Institute, not a left-leaning outfit, builds on an existing model developed by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) to create a first-of-its kind analyses to determine “how immigrants, both legal and illegal, and their children affect government budgets” in a cumulative manner.

Trump Inflation Hit Average US Family With $1,625 in Higher Costs Last Year: Report

US Military Helping Trump to Build Massive Network of ‘Concentration Camps,’ Navy Contract Reveals

Looking at 30 years of data, the 95-page report—titled “Immigrants’ Recent Effects on Government Budgets: 1994-2023”—discovered that immigrants overall “generated a fiscal surplus of about $14.5 trillion” over those years. In part, the NASEM-Cato model shows:

  • Every year from 1994 to 2023, immigrants have paid more in taxes than they received in benefits.
  • Immigrants generated nearly $10.6 trillion more in federal, state, and local taxes than they induced in total government spending.
  • Accounting for savings on interest payments on the national debt, immigrants saved $14.5 trillion in debt over this 30-year period.
  • Immigrants cut US budget deficits by about a third from 1994 to 2023, and fiscal savings grew to $878 billion in 2023.

The paper concludes that “the average immigrant is much less costly than the average US-born American, and that immigrants impose lower costs per person on old-age benefit, education, and public safety programs.”

The findings arrive with the US embroiled in a heated debate about immigration enforcement as President Donald Trump—backed by far-right xenophobes in his inner orbit, including White House deputy chief of staff for policy Stephen Miller and Department of Homeland Security Kristi Noem—has unleashed violent federal agents into communities nationwide to sweep up undocumented workers and their family members.

In a video produced for social media, David J. Bier, director of Immigration Studies at Cato and one of the report’s co-authors, said the analysis shows in detail why it’s a lie to believe that immigrants are “sucking us dry,” a familiar argument by anti-immigrant “nativists” like Miller.

In summary, the report notes that immigrants produce a net fiscal benefit in the US economy because:

  1. The United States collected more in taxes from the average person than it spent on benefits (excluding pure public goods).
  2. Immigrants paid higher-than-average taxes because their higher-than-average employment rate led to higher-than-average incomes.
  3. Immigrants cost the government less than average because they did not add to the cost of the government’s largest expenditure (pure public goods) and received lower-than-average benefits for other major items, particularly old-age benefits and education.

As shown in the figure below, the difference between taxes paid by immigrants and the public benefits they receive “has grown from $158 billion to $572 billion in real terms since 1994.” Just to look at 2023, working immigrants that year paid $1.3 trillion in taxes yet received only $761 billion in benefits.

CATO analyses: immigration taxes versus benefits

This trend, despite endless cries from far-right pundits and xenophobic lawmakers that immigrants are a drain on public coffers, has held steady for decades—with no sign of it ending in the future.

“For decades, nativists have sold America this narrative that immigrant welfare is behind our deficits and debt,” said Bier. “This figure shows how absurd that is.”

The report argues that “rather than treating [immigrants—both documented and undocumented] as the cause of America’s fiscal struggles, we should consider immigrants part of the solution.”

Mark D. Levine, comptroller of New York City, was among the public officials pointing to the report as timely evidence that the Trump-Miller-Noem narrative about immigration is built on a foundation of falsehoods.

“MAGA’s claim that immigrants are a drain on government budgets? It’s a lie,” said Levine.

Ministers urged to go further on child poverty as MPs vote to end two child benefits cap

MINISTERS were urged to go further to tackle child poverty as MPs voted on lifting the two-child benefit cap today.

Labour has faced calls since they came to power in summer 2024 to scrap the Tory policy that restricts child tax credit and universal credit to the first two children in most households.

Seven Labour MPs were suspended by the party after a backing an SNP motion to scrap the welfare measure in a vote in Parliament that year.

The government had at the time cited spending controls as a reason for not being able to ditch the policy immediately, indicating there would be no change without economic growth.

But following repeated calls from charities, campaigners and many of the party’s own MPs, Chancellor Rachel Reeves announced in the autumn Budget last year that the government would move to scrap the policy from April.

Addressing the Commons for the second reading of the Universal Credit (Removal of Two Child Limit) Bill today, Work and Pensions Secretary Pat McFadden said that the policy used children as pawns and was “all about the politics of dividing lines” between the “deserving and undeserving poor.”

But Labour MP for Liverpool Riverside Kim Johnson said that she feared the Bill to remove the cap would never have happened without the campaigning of the End Child Poverty Coalition (ECPC) and National Education Union (NEU).

She said: “It’s a shame that it has taken so long to reverse this draconian cap that was driving hundreds of families into poverty every single month.

DWP actions blamed in string of claimant deaths, coroner reports reveal

The suicide of Tamara Jade Logon after her disability benefits were wrongly withdrawn is the latest in a series of deaths in which coroners have cited DWP failings, exposing a pattern of preventable harm, says DYLAN MURPHY

A DAMNING coroner’s report has concluded that the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) played a significant role in the suicide of a vulnerable young woman, Tamara Jade Logon.

This case is the latest in a deeply disturbing pattern of deaths where the DWP’s actions have been officially cited as a contributing factor, intensifying calls for a full independent inquiry into the department’s systemic safeguarding failures.

It is time to end the culture of secrecy and unaccountability that has allowed these tragedies to occur under both Tory and Labour governments.

The Labour government must live up to its obligations under international human rights law and take action to stop the continuing abuses committed by the DWP against disabled people.

The labour movement must help build a social security system based on dignity, trust and compassion, and ensure that the DWP is held responsible for its duty of care to every single claimant. The lives of the most vulnerable members of our society depend on it.
