Morning Star Editorial: Britain is the real threat to peace

Prime Minister Keir Starmer during a visit to BAE Systems in Govan, Glasgow, to launch the Strategic Defence Review, June 2, 2025

KEIR STARMER justifies the immense increases in military spending stretching years into the future by reference to “threats” to Britain from purportedly hostile states.

Who is the real threat here? Both the historical record and contemporary politics show that it is the armed forces of imperialist Britain which menace independent countries across the world, not the other way around.

That is why the arms spending increases — with 3 per cent of GDP going on the military likely only a first step given Nato’s war frenzy — will not only fail to make Britain safer, it will ramp up conflict in many theatres, from Europe to the Middle East to the Pacific.

Starmer claims that he is making Britian “war-ready.” Yet this century alone, while supposedly basking in a “peace dividend,” Britain has waged aggression against Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Syria and Yemen.

Plans to deploy British forces to Ukraine only underline the point. If this is the record before the country is “war-ready” what can we expect once the neo-imperialists of Whitehall are still more tooled up?

Ultimately, it is the politics of war, not the technology of it, which is decisive. A big army of a peaceful power, like China, is far less of a menace than a smaller one in aggressive hands.

Almost the entire record of the British Establishment throughout the ages shows that it cannot be trusted with large armed forces. Today it deploys those forces, usually at the behest of the US, to enforce a world order privileging British capitalist interests.

Genocide denier and Current UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer is quoted that he supports Zionism without qualification. He also confirms that UK air force support has been essential in Israel’s mass-murdering genocide.  People take part in the People’s Assembly Britain is Broken national demonstration in central London, November 5, 2022

People’s Assembly demo on June 7 will warn ministers to stop the cuts and invest or face oblivion

UNIONS will confront Labour’s cuts agenda next month with a national demonstration demanding the party change course.

The People’s Assembly held a press conference today to call on the whole labour movement to march with it at the No More Austerity demonstration in London on Saturday June 7.

The march takes place days before Chancellor Rachel Reeves is to announce her first multi-year spending settlement on June 11, and is intended to maximise pressure on the government to drop Ms Reeves’ self-imposed fiscal rules, tax wealth and profits and raise spending to address funding crises across health, education, local government and many other sectors.

Labour MP Diane Abbott said the disastrous result of this month’s council elections were leading an increasing number of MPs to realise the need to stand up to Mr Starmer and change his policies, she said.

“The result of the Runcorn by-election and the council elections have had an extraordinary effect on my colleagues,” she told the Morning Star. “They can see their majorities crumbling before their eyes, and there’s nothing that concentrates the mind of an MP more than the threat of actually losing their seat and the salary that goes with it.”

More MPs had started to understand that the Starmer clique only knew how to do one thing — attack the Labour left — and was incapable of addressing the bigger challenges of government, she said.

Thoughts of the Day 12 May 2025

Image of British Gas sign.
Image of British Gas sign.

I’ve been helping a disabled friend with her billing troubles with British Gas. I feel a little responsible because I advised her to go with a fixed deal with British Gas.

So for her first week British Gas charged for 4756 kWhs of gas. We complained and asked for a proper review. Their review wasn’t clever enough to realise that Ofwat’s average gas use for 1-2 people in a flat or house is 7500 kWhs a year or that my friend’s only gas appliance – a combination boiler rated at 24 kW max – is simply not capable of using that much gas in a week. There are also mistakes on the bill, in statements of gas used and transactions.

So I rang up to ask about these issue, put on hold many times and disconnected at 27 minutes and 5 seconds. British Gas has a poor reputation for dealing with complaints apparently.

We will be threatening legal action.

So there you go British Gas, my review ;)

13/5/25: I don’t have the figures to hand and think that the 4756 kWhs was instead just short of 5000kWhs for a week, more like 4986.
