A Palestinian newborn died early Saturday after exposure to extreme cold in the Gaza Strip, as severe winter weather compounded the suffering of displaced families living in fragile tents with little protection from the elements, Anadolu reports.

The infant, Mahmoud al-Aqraa, was just seven days old when he died during a powerful storm that swept through the enclave, bringing heavy rain and strong winds.

The family had been sheltering in a makeshift tent in Deir al-Balah, where freezing temperatures and violent gusts left residents struggling to keep warm through the night.

“He started shaking badly,” al-Aqraa said. “We tried everything we could, but there was no heat, no safe shelter, nothing to protect him from the cold.”

Emergency crews were unable to reach the family due to the weather, forcing the father to wrap the baby in a blanket and rush him to the nearest field hospital. Medical staff said the infant’s body temperature had dropped to dangerously low levels.

Despite attempts to stabilize and warm him, Mahmoud was later transferred to the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital, where he died several hours later from hypothermia.

Inside the hospital morgue, his father said goodbye to his son, whose small body showed visible signs of cold exposure, including stiffness and discoloration.

Mahmoud’s older brother, Yusuf, stood nearby in tears. “He died from the cold,” the boy said softly. “We don’t have heaters. We only have a few blankets, and even those aren’t enough.”

Exposed to fierce winds and the elements

Gaza’s Civil Defense said earlier Saturday that the ongoing storm had damaged or blown away thousands of tents for displaced families, particularly along the coastline, leaving them exposed as winds reached speeds of up to 60 kilometers (37 miles) per hour.

Civil Defense spokesperson Mahmoud Basal linked the crisis to Israel’s continued blocking of humanitarian and reconstruction aid from entering Gaza.

Basal said the crisis was not simply the result of harsh weather, but a consequence of continued restrictions on the entry of shelter materials and construction supplies.

“This is not a natural disaster,” he said. “It is a man-made humanitarian emergency.”

The Israeli army has killed more than 71,000 people, most of them women and children, and injured over 171,000 others in a brutal offensive since October 2023 that left the Gaza Strip in ruins.

Despite a ceasefire that began last Oct. 10, the Israeli army has continued its attacks, killing 424 Palestinians and wounding 1,189 others, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.

Hundreds of people took part in a demonstration in the Swedish capital Stockholm, protesting against US military action in Venezuela and Israel’s renewed attacks on Gaza

Hundreds of people took part in a demonstration in the Swedish capital Stockholm, protesting against US military action in Venezuela and Israel’s renewed attacks on Gaza, Anadolu reports.

The protest, held at Odenplan Square, was organized by several civil society groups on Saturday.

Demonstrators accused Israel of violating a ceasefire that began on Oct. 10, 2025, by resuming strikes on Gaza.

They also criticized the US for its military intervention in Venezuela and the detention of President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores.

They also called on Israel to stop its military operations in Gaza and demanded the release of Maduro and his wife.

Speaking to Anadolu, Swedish activist Sigrun Meder said the demonstration aimed to condemn both Israel’s genocidal actions in Gaza and the unlawful detention of Venezuela’s leadership.

She said that despite claims of a ceasefire, violence in Gaza was continuing.

“While we witness this horrific genocide taking place before our eyes in Palestine, we see how tents are destroyed by storms. Even though there is supposedly a ceasefire in Gaza right now, the bombings continue, and many people are being killed,” she said.

Emphasizing that the world is going through a period in which international law is not respected, Meder said: “The only country that is forced to comply with international law is Russia, but when it comes to the US, the West, or Israel, they can do whatever they want, and international law is ignored. We are the ones who defend international law in the streets and squares. We defend democracy, and we defend human rights. We stand with Palestine, we stand with Venezuela.”

The US carried out the military operation in Venezuela on Jan. 3, capturing Maduro and his wife. Trump said his administration would “run” Venezuela and its oil assets during a transition period.

Maduro and Flores were subsequently flown out of the country to New York, where they had an initial hearing on drug and weapons charges. They pleaded not guilty to all charges on Monday.

“Grave danger looms” over Palestine solidarity hunger strikers in Britain

Palestine solidarity activists on hunger strike in British prisons face life-threatening risks as their protest enters its third month.

Palestine solidarity activists on hunger strike in British prisons have long passed a critical point in their protest, with at least two now facing a risk of imminent death. Heba Muraisi and Kamran Ahmed, who have been on hunger strike since November, have both reported worsening symptoms that health professionals warn could signal permanent damage. Their deteriorating condition has led to yet another wave of appeals for the UK government, led by Keir Starmer, to finally address the strikers’ demands.

“As the hunger strike enters its third month, those still on hunger strike continue to deteriorate, and grave danger looms over them,” the group Prisoners for Palestine warned. “Despite this, they continue firm in their actions and beliefs, that continuing to strike is the only way to get justice in the face of the government’s contempt for life.”

Most recently, Muraisi has reported uncontrollable muscle spasms and increasing difficulty breathing, while Ahmed has experienced intermittent hearing loss and severe physical decline. He was hospitalized for the sixth time this week, with health workers reporting growing difficulty in providing care. “Healthcare staff found it extremely difficult to cannulate him due to the effect the hunger strike has had on his body, causing his veins to shrink and become very hard to find,” Prisoners for Palestine said in an earlier statement.

Muraisi and Ahmed are among the eight activists involved in what has been described as the largest hunger strike in Britain since the 1981 Irish political prisoners’ strike. A third activist, Lewie Chiaramello, remains on intermittent hunger strike and faces serious risks due to underlying medical conditions, namely diabetes. At the same time, activists who have paused or ended their strikes in recent days are struggling to recover their health. Teuta Hoxha, who paused her strike earlier this week, reported that prison authorities failed to ensure support for adequate supervised refeeding, potentially exposing her to the serious risks posed by refeeding syndrome.

The strikers are demanding guarantees of their right to bail and to communicate with family and support networks, as well as the deproscription of the direct action group Palestine Action and an end to British complicity in the genocide in Gaza, including a halt to all operations by Elbit Systems in the UK. Despite continuous appeals from families, human rights organizations, and members of Parliament, the British government has so far refused even to engage in dialogue.

“Keir Starmer’s government is not passive; it is actively complicit: enabling genocide abroad, escalating repression at home and giving a green light to Trump’s renewed imperialism,” MP Zarah Sultana wrote on January 6. “This is not neutrality. It is collaboration. Let there be no ambiguity: if Heba or Kamran die, that blood is on the hands of this Labour government.”

In contrast to the government’s stance, solidarity for the hunger strikers continues to grow both locally and internationally. Following appeals by Irish organizations and political parties drawing parallels with the experience of Irish prisoners in the 1980s, South African networks and individuals called on President Cyril Ramaphosa to urge British authorities to take action.

“Under apartheid, some detained unjustly by the regime used hunger strikes as the only form of resistance available to them, calling for justice for themselves and for all who were oppressed,” their letter, dated December 29, 2025, reads. “As a nation, we must therefore stand in solidarity with these six young people, support their reasonable demands, and urge the British government to end its injustices against them, actions that could ultimately cost them their lives.”

The Labour government’s continued refusal to reconsider its repressive approach to protest rights has been widely criticized, including in a recent report by Human Rights Watch. The warnings highlight a general climate in Britain that is increasingly hostile to popular dissent and is having a chilling effect on fundamental civil liberties.

Attacks on right to protest ‘fraying the fabric of democracy,’ major reports warn

Metropolitan Police officers form a cordon at Parliament Square to prevent protesters reaching Westminster Bridge during a Free Palestine Coalition demonstration in central London, January 6, 2024

THE right to protest is facing an “unprecedented crisis” in England and Wales with legal reforms in the past years “fraying the fabric of democracy itself,” two major reports said today.

Law reform organisation Justice and Human Rights Watch called for the changes to be repealed and proposals for more curbs halted.

Justice chief executive Fiona Rutherford said: “Year by year, we see police powers grow, as our fundamental right to protest is treated more like a privilege.

“The law in this area has become dangerously unbalanced, empowering the state to silence voices it should be safeguarding.

“Reversing this trend is essential to restoring trust, protecting rights and preserving a healthy democracy.”

Human Rights Watch senior researcher Lydia Gall said: “The UK is now adopting protest-control tactics imposed in countries where democratic safeguards are collapsing.

“The UK should oppose such measures, not replicate and endorse them.”

Commons leader vow to raise hunger striker prison move with Lammy branded ‘too little too late’

Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy speaking during the launch of the Government’s anti-corruption strategy at home and abroad to strengthen national security and drive growth, at Mansion House in London, December 8, 2025

PALESTINE ACTION supporters expressed disgust that it took a hunger striker “to be on the brink of death” before the Commons leader would raise the issue of a prison move with Justice Secretary David Lammy today.

Sir Alan Campbell said that he would raise the possibility of moving Heba Muraisi to be closer to her disabled mother after Labour MP Barry Gardiner urged him to act.

The 31-year-old, who is Mr Gardiner’s constituent, is currently being held at HMP New Hall in West Yorkshire 200 miles away from her mother’s home.

Mr Gardiner said that she is “close to death, because she has been on hunger strike protest for 67 days” and had asked if she could be moved to HMP Bronzefield in Ashford, Surrey, as it will be easier for her disabled mother to visit.

“Delays in the courts system mean that one of my constituents has been in prison awaiting trial on remand for over a year,” he added.

“I plead with the leader of the house to let common sense and humanity prevail, to urgently intervene, to agree the transfer and also to consider allowing her release on bail to her family home in my constituency.”

Sir Alan said: “I will not only draw it to the attention of the Justice Secretary, but to make sure that he gets the assurances that he and the family need.”
