Tensions are rising between Israel and Turkey over the Turkish presence in Syria. Two Western intelligence sources told i24NEWS on Thursday that Turkey has been working in recent weeks to deploy radar systems inside Syrian territory.
The move is expected to significantly limit Israel’s freedom of movement in Syrian airspace. It could also affect Israel’s ability to use Syrian airspace to carry out operations in other areas, including Iran.
According to foreign reports, the deployment of Turkish radars in Syria would allow Turkey to track the movement of Israeli aircraft in Syrian skies, even while they are passing through on their way to missions in Iraq and Iran. This capability could place major restrictions on the operational freedom of the Israeli air force.
An Israeli security source told the website that the possibility of Turkey establishing a military base in Syria represents a “potential threat”. The source added: “If a Turkish air base is established, this would harm Israel’s freedom of action in Syria.”

Israeli occupation forces arrested the writer and political researcher Sari Orabi after raiding his home at dawn on Thursday in the town of Rafat, north of occupied Jerusalem, according to local media sources.
The sources said Israeli forces carried out wide arrest raids early on Thursday across several areas of the occupied West Bank and Jerusalem. The raids targeted a number of young men and former prisoners after their homes were stormed, searched and damaged.
Sari Orabi is a writer and researcher specialising in politics and Islamic thought. His articles have been published in several newspapers, magazines, websites and research centres. He also regularly appears as a commentator on cultural, intellectual and political issues on a number of television channels.
In addition to Orabi, Israeli forces arrested Ibrahim Hourani after raiding his home in the city of Qalqilya. In the town of Aroura, north of Ramallah, they arrested Nasser Mufaraj and his son Amr, and re-arrested former prisoner Tayseer Khusaib following home raids.
The Palestinian Prisoners’ Media Office said the continued arrest campaigns show that Israeli policy targets academics, writers, former prisoners and young people alike, rather than a specific group. It said this reflects a clear attempt to suppress public awareness and social influence within Palestinian society.

Israel uprooted and bulldozed more than 8,000 trees, most of them olive trees, in the West Bank in just one week, according to documentation released by the Palestinian Ministry of Agriculture on Thursday. The ministry estimated the financial losses at around $7 million.
The ministry said Israeli army forces and settlers carried out the attacks as part of an intensifying escalation that directly targeted the agricultural sector and sources of food security in Palestinian areas.
It described the situation as a “dangerous and rapidly increasing” escalation, noting that the attacks took place during the third week of December and were part of what it called a systematic policy aimed at seizing land and removing its original residents.
According to the report, most of the attacks were concentrated in the northern and central West Bank. Israeli forces uprooted about 5,000 olive trees in the town of Silat al-Harithiya, west of Jenin, and another 3,000 olive trees in Turmus Ayya, east of Ramallah.
The ministry also recorded separate bulldozing operations that destroyed 156 olive trees in Mukhmas, east of Jerusalem, and 100 fig trees in the towns of Ramin and al-Nazla al-Sharqiya in the Tulkarm area.
Further damage included the uprooting of 13 olive trees in Al-Funduk village, east of Qalqilya, and 19 olive trees, including 10 old trees, in Deir Istiya in Salfit and Al-Minya in Bethlehem.

Delivering his first Christmas Mass address from St. Peter’s Basilica on Thursday, Pope Leo XIV evoked the plight of Gazans facing weeks of harsh winter conditions, alongside refugees and displaced persons worldwide, Anadolu reports.
“Since the Word was made flesh, humanity now speaks crying out with God’s own desire to encounter us. The Word has pitched His fragile tent among us. How, then, can we not think of the tents in Gaza, exposed to weeks of rain, and wind, and cold?” Pope Leo said.
He also drew attention to similar hardships faced by other refugees and displaced persons on every continent as well as homeless people living under “makeshift shelters.”
“Fragile is the flesh of defenseless populations tried by so many wars ongoing or concluded, leaving behind rubble and open wounds,” the pontiff said.
He cited the fragility of human life among young people forced to take up arms, saying those on the front lines “feel the senselessness of what is asked of them and the falsehoods that fill the pompous speeches of those who send them to their deaths.”
“Jesus wants us to touch human misery, to touch the suffering flesh of others. He hopes that we will stop looking for those personal or communal niches which shelter us from the maelstrom of human misfortune and instead enter into the reality of other people’s lives and know the power of tenderness,” the pope said.
Israel killed more than 71,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, in Gaza and destroyed the enclave during its two-year war. A ceasefire was agreed upon in October but Israeli violations have continued unabated.
According to the Gaza government media office, more than 400 Palestinians have since been killed and over a thousand others injured in Israeli attacks.

Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz vowed on Wednesday to continue military offensives in Lebanon, Syria, Gaza and Yemen despite regional and international efforts to de-escalate and restore regional stability, Anadolu reports.
Israel “will continue its operations in Lebanon, Syria, the Gaza Strip and Yemen,” Maariv daily quoted Katz as saying during a training course for Israeli Air Force pilots, attended by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir.
“In Lebanon, we will continue to apply maximum force against Hezbollah; in Syria, Israel will not withdraw from Mount Hermon (Jabal al-Sheikh) and the security zone; and in the Gaza Strip, Israel remains committed to dismantling Hamas and disarming the territory,” he added.
“As for Yemen, Israel will continue its operations to prevent the Houthis from strengthening their capabilities,” he said.
Addressing its conflict with Tehran, Katz claimed that Israel had inflicted “significant damage on Iran’s nuclear and strategic capabilities.”
“I am following reports regarding Iran, which we struck strongly in cooperation with our American partners, and the security establishment is closely monitoring developments. Naturally, I cannot provide further details,” he added.
The Israeli army has launched a brutal offensive in Gaza, killing more than 71,000 people, mostly women and children, and injuring over 171,000 others since October 2023. The assault fueled regional tensions and sparked an exchange of attacks with Hezbollah in Lebanon and Yemen’s Houthis. The Israeli army also launched a 12-day war on Iran in June, which was halted under a US-sponsored ceasefire.
Tel Aviv also staged repeated cross-border raids into Syrian territory and launched airstrikes, killing civilians and destroying Syrian military sites, vehicles, weapons, and ammunition.
