  • BBC backs decision to allow Israel’s participation in 2026 Eurovision amid controversy

    The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) has backed the European Broadcasting Union’s (EBU) decision allowing Israel to participate in the 2026 Eurovision Song Contest, even as four European broadcasters announced they will boycott the event, Anadolu reports.

    National broadcasters of Ireland, Spain, the Netherlands and Slovenia announced that they will not take part in the 2026 competition after the EBU cleared the way for Israeli broadcaster KAN to participate.

    The BBC however said it backs the decision to allow Israel to take part in the contest.

    “We support the collective decision made by members of the EBU. This is about enforcing the rules of the EBU and being inclusive,” said a BBC spokesperson.

    The decision drew criticism from some British lawmakers. Independent lawmaker Adnan Hussain, quoted the BBC’s statement on Israel’s participation in the song contest and said: “Boycott Eurovision for platforming genocide.”

    Zarah Sultana, another British lawmaker said “we cannot have ‘business as usual’ with Israel, a genocidal apartheid state.”

    “The UK must follow Ireland, Spain, the Netherlands and Slovenia’s lead and boycott Eurovision,” she wrote.

    During the EBU General Assembly in Geneva, a majority of members voted to allow the Israeli broadcaster to compete in next year’s contest, scheduled to be held in Vienna, Austria.

    Following the vote, Spanish broadcaster RTVE announced that it would not participate in Eurovision 2026, nor broadcast the contest, accusing Israel of using the competition for “political purposes” and alleging political interference.

    Dutch broadcaster AVROTROS similarly confirmed its withdrawal, stating that Israel’s participation, coupled with the humanitarian situation in Gaza and restrictions on press freedom, conflicted with the organization’s core values, according to a statement.

    Ireland’s RTE also declared it would not participate or broadcast the contest, citing the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza and targeted attacks on journalists as incompatible with the broadcaster’s principles.

    RTV Slovenia will also not participate in the contest, according to Chairwoman Natalija Gorscak. “Our message is: we will not participate in the ESC if Israel is there — on behalf of the 20,000 children who died in Gaza,” she said.

    THE Tory and Tory-government-appointed director general of the BBC, has resigned. Sir Tim Davie may well be pleased to be knocked off his perch given the miserable time he has had dealing with the problems that beset our principal state-affiliated media organisation.

    The proximate cause is a leaked internal memo which presented a Panorama documentary as making it seem as if Donald Trump directly called for the Maga assault on the US capitol [capital] that marked the end of his first term as president.

    BBC bosses have the unenviable task of maintaining the elaborate fiction that the organisation is a paragon of journalistic integrity and unwavering objectivity while policing successive waves of criticism. This comes from both a left, which for reasons of state is necessarily marginalised in the coverage of political affairs, and an insurgent right that, despite its impeccable patrician leadership, has chosen to present itself as the representative of a disgruntled citizenry.

    Another pressure comes from Israel’s hit squad in public life, who keep the BBC under pressure to present the genocidal apartheid state as an ordinary democracy fighting a “normal” war through relentless accusations of anti-semitic bias.

    In this particular moment the BBC has become the the target of our government circles which, in a manner entirely consistent with their supine relationship to the United States, is acting in conformity with Trump’s prejudices and prerogatives as leader of the “free world.”

    It is indeed true that the Panorama clip in question elided two parts of Trump’s speech into a single framing of the Capitol riot he enabled. That it spoke to a wider truth that more accurately represented what Trump, thinks, schemed for and actually did is deemed unimportant if it is necessary to appease the US president.

    No-one with an alert and critical mind will fail to make the comparison with the way the BBC represented and reported upon the efforts of Jeremy Corbyn when leader of the Labour Party, and subsequently. These too included the selective editing of his remarks to present them in a particular light.

    The BBC’s decision to scrap a planned Zack Polanski interview on the channel’s flagship Laura Kuenssberg show has caused fury within the Green Party

    The BBC’s decision to cancel a planned conference interview with new Green leader Zack Polanski on the Laura Kuenssberg show on Sunday has caused fury within the party.

    As I report today for Byline Times, the decision to scrap the interview came after the show also refused to have him on last month, following his election as party leader, choosing to instead invite Nigel Farage.

    Green party sources are particularly furious with the reason they were given for this week’s cancellation, which is that the show needed more time to cover the Manchester synagogue terror attack.

    This is particularly galling for Polanski, who is both Jewish and from Manchester, and yet was denied his chance to have his voice heard.

    Polanski suggested on social media that the decision to cancel may have been due to his position on Gaza. The BBC declined to comment on their reason, saying only that he had been interviewed elsewhere on the BBC during the Green party conference and would be invited on the show in “the coming weeks”.

    However, it is not the first time that the BBC has been accused of ignoring the Greens and others on the left of British politics.
