How Washington enables Israel’s ceasefire violations

Since the Gaza ceasefire took effect on 10 October 2025, Israel has once again demonstrated that its impunity is limitless. In less than twenty days since following the signing of the ceasefire, Israel has murdered 226 Palestinians, injured 594, and continues to demolish homes at will. In the same period, Israel has breached the ceasefire more than 125 times.

The most recent was on 28 October, when Israeli warplanes pounded Gaza City and Khan Younis, murdering 109 people, including 46 children and 20 women. President Donald Trump justified the killing of the Palestinian children stating “they (Israel) should hit back.”

In one of the targets, entire residential buildings were flattened in central Gaza, wiping out 18 members of the same family: children, parents, and grandparents alike. Still, US Vice President J.D. Vance dismissed the Israeli attacks as “little skirmishes,” insisting the ceasefire was “holding.” An American spokesman called the murder of more than 100 Palestinians “limited and targeted.” For Washington, the truce is “holding” as long as the victims are Palestinians, and the Resistance doesn’t fire back.

One would ask, if Palestinians have responded proportionally, would it still be described as “limited”? Or is it only Jewish life that counts for the American administrations?

Other mediators—Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey—weren’t much different. Qatar’s prime minister went so far as to crow that both parties are still committed to the ceasefire. It is as if pretending compliance mattered more than murdering 226 Palestinians in three weeks. Even worse, hours after he announced the resumption of the ceasefire, Israel bombed Beit Lahiya in northern Gaza, killing at least two more civilians. Israel has carried out many more attacks since.

From day one, Israel has ignored its obligations in key provisions of the agreement. For instance, Item 7 required that “full aid be immediately sent into the Gaza Strip” at levels matching the 19 January 2025—roughly 600 trucks per day. According to international human rights organizations, in the first two weeks following the ceasefire, Israel rejected 99 applications to deliver aid to Gaza. As of 1 November, Israel has allowed, on average, only145 trucks a day to enter the Strip, or just 24 per cent of the “full aid” under the ceasefire agreement. Further, Israel has barred UNRWA, the largest UN aid organization with the most extensive storage and distribution system on the ground, from delivering shelter and food supply for 1.3 million human beings. This contravened the International Court of Justice ruling specifically ordering Israel to allow UNRWA to operate freely.

Israeli violations of accords is a familiar Israeli pattern. In southern Lebanon, a ceasefire demanded Israel to withdraw from Lebanese territory by 26 January 2025. Ten months later, it still occupies posts inside Lebanon and carries out daily attacks on targets throughout Lebanon. As in Gaza, the US and France, who brokered that agreement seem to be unbothered by the Israeli violations. Ironically, these same countries would predictably “cry and condemn” if the Lebanese Resistance retaliated against Israel.

For Israel, agreements are a la carte, it takes what suits it, while refusing to fulfill its obligations. All Israel had wanted from the ceasefire agreement was the return of its captives. Once that was secured, it gained a free hand to do as it pleased in Gaza. The ceasefire is no more than a façade allowing Israel to manage a “starvation diet” for more than two million humans.

By trivialising Israeli violations of the ceasefire, the US and its Arab partners have turned what should be a mutual commitment into a one-sided war license. When Israeli breaches are not confronted, the Trump administration and Arab mediators turn those violations into an accepted policy. For Israel’s strategy is to create a “new normal,” hiding behind ceasefires to maintain the status quo, anchor a permanent occupation, “security zones,” and make murdering Palestinians a routine.

This has been the “new normal” where Israel conducts regular incursions into Syria and attacks Lebanon, and now Gaza, unchallenged. In this framework, ceasefires become deceptive tactics to secure occupation and normalise aggression.

As long as Washington and its vassal Arab dictators sanitise Israeli violations as “skirmishes,” and as long as Palestinian lives are expendable under a system where “ceasefires” exist in press releases only to boast Trump’s narcissistic ego, and where one side can violate agreements without consequence, “ceasefires” serve to legalise perpetual one-sided war. Thus, exposing Trump’s “peace” as a transactional tool that restores Israel’s leverage to starve, and commit mass atrocities with impunity.

Colombian President Gustavo Petro has said that the question of “who will hold Israel accountable for its crimes” should start with Germany, stressing that Germany’s “guilt complex towards the Jews because of the Holocaust” continues to paralyse its decisions.

In an interview with Al Jazeera Mubasher, President Petro said that while Israel “is a state with a government,” it “has committed genocide and is repeating what the Nazis once did to the Jews — but this time against the Palestinians.”

He called on Germany and Europe to take action, as well as democratic people in the United States — particularly the youth — noting that “American capital is trying to silence them.”

The president added that Germans “are paralysed by fear of their past and its burden.” He pointed out that the Nuremberg Trials, which later evolved into the international justice system represented by the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court, are now “under attack from the United States.”

President Petro noted that most countries have ratified the courts’ conventions “despite their current inability to act,” adding, “I trust that the Israeli people, especially the youth — who are currently ruled by a Nazi government that oppresses Christians and Arabs alike — will rise up.”

He went on to say that the International Criminal Court had issued an arrest warrant for Benjamin Netanyahu and his former defence minister, but that US President Donald Trump and other states have ignored it.

President Petro concluded by saying that “the chosen people are not Israel or the United States; the chosen people are those who choose humanity.”

[Abed Rahim Khatib – Anadolu Agency]

Gaza’s Health Ministry said Monday that it had received the remains of 45 Palestinians released by Israel via the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), raising the total number of bodies handed over to 270 under a ceasefire agreement, Anadolu reports.

The forensic teams have so far identified 78 bodies and are continuing examinations “in accordance with approved medical procedures and protocols” before the remains are documented and released to families, the ministry said in a statement.

The ministry had previously said that many of the bodies handed over by Israel showed signs of abuse, including beatings, bound hands, blindfolds, and facial disfigurement, and were returned without names.

The handover is part of the first phase of the ceasefire agreement that took effect on Oct. 10. The deal includes the exchange of prisoners and bodies between Israel and Hamas, brokered by Turkiye, Egypt, and Qatar, with US oversight.

Families have been identifying the remains of their relatives, returned from Israel without names, by physical markings or clothing, as forensic facilities in Gaza remain out of service due to a years-long Israeli blockade and the destruction of laboratories.

Before the ceasefire, Israel held 735 Palestinian bodies in so-called “cemeteries of numbers,” according to the Palestinian National Campaign to Retrieve Martyrs’ Bodies.

According to the Israeli daily Haaretz, the army has been holding about 1,500 bodies of Palestinians from Gaza at the notorious Sde Teiman military base in southern Israel.

Israel has killed more than 68,800 people, mostly women and children, and injured over 170,600 others in attacks in Gaza since October 2023.

Hamas denies US accusations that it looted aid trucks in Gaza

Palestinian group Hamas on Sunday denied accusations by the US Central Command (CENTCOM) that it has looted aid trucks in the Gaza Strip, Anadolu reports.

In a statement, Hamas called the US accusations “unfounded” and “part of an attempt to justify the further reduction of already limited humanitarian aid, while covering up the international community’s failure to end the blockade and starvation imposed on civilians in Gaza.”

“All manifestations of chaos and looting ended immediately after the withdrawal of the (Israeli) occupying forces, proving that the occupation was the only party that sponsored these gangs and orchestrated the chaos,” it added.

Hamas said over 1,000 Palestinian police and security forces had lost their lives and hundreds were injured while trying to provide protection for humanitarian aid convoys and ensure that assistance reaches those in need.

It affirmed that none of the international or local institutions, nor any driver working with the aid convoys, has filed any report or complaint about looting by Hamas.

“This clearly demonstrates that the scene cited by the US Central Command is fabricated and politically motivated to justify blockade policies and the reduction of humanitarian aid,” it said, blaming the US for failing to document the ongoing Israeli attacks despite the ceasefire, including the killing of 254 Palestinians and wounding of 595 others.

Remains returned by Hamas from Gaza not of Israeli hostages: Media

CENTCOM had shared drone footage allegedly showing an aid truck being looted by Hamas operatives in the enclave.

Hamas said the average number of aid trucks entering Gaza does not exceed 135 per day, while the rest are commercial trucks that Gaza’s population cannot afford, “despite our repeated calls to increase the number of humanitarian aid trucks and reduce commercial shipments.”

“The US adoption of the Israeli narrative only deepens Washington’s immoral bias and places it squarely as a partner in the blockade and the suffering of the Palestinian people,” it said.

The ceasefire took effect on Oct. 10 under US President Donald Trump’s 20-point plan.

Phase one of the deal includes the release of Israeli hostages in exchange for nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners. The plan also envisages the rebuilding of Gaza and the establishment of a new governing mechanism without Hamas.

Israel has killed more than 68,500 people, mostly women and children, and injured over 170,600 others in attacks in Gaza since October 2023.

The powerful who stand with Israel

Israel was able to carry out its live-streamed genocide in Gaza because of its powerful Western allies who supplied it with diplomatic cover and weapons

On October 26, Caroline Willemen of Médecins Sans Frontières stated that Israel continues to use the need for humanitarian aid in Gaza as “means of pressure”. “The humanitarian situation in Gaza has not improved significantly,” she told the press, “as water and shelter shortages persist and hundreds of thousands of people continue to live in tents as winter approaches”. Israel’s armed forces have now annexed more than half of Gaza’s land and are dumping vast amounts of debris into that zone, turning it into a mountain of garbage. To move the rubble without experts and equipment is very dangerous, as about ten to twelve percent of the Israeli bombs dropped on Gaza have not exploded.

“Every Gazan person is now living in a horrific, unmapped minefield,” said Nick Orr of Humanity and Inclusion, a non-governmental organization at work in Palestine. “The UXO [Unexploded Ordnance] is everywhere. On the ground, in the rubble, under the ground, everywhere”. As Palestinians dig through the hills of concrete, they risk triggering a dormant bomb – creating more casualties of the Israeli genocide.

Over the past two years, Israel has dropped at least 200,000 tons of explosives on Gaza, a tonnage equivalent to thirteen atom bombs of the scale dropped on Hiroshima by the United States on August 6, 1945. This is unimaginable, particularly given the fact that Palestinians have no air defense systems, no air force, and no ability to defend themselves from high-altitude and drone bombing or to strike back in any comparable way. Genocides are, by their nature, asymmetrical. But to describe these past two years as asymmetrical is obscene: this was one-directional violence, the Goliath-like Israelis using their immense advantages against the David-like Palestinian resistance.

The opaqueness of official arms transfers means we have no precise idea how much of this tonnage came to Israel from its major suppliers during the war: the United States, Germany, Italy, and the United Kingdom. However, we have enough evidence to know that most of the bombs came from the United States, with smaller supplies from the other countries. A new report from the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territories occupied since 1967, entitled Gaza Genocide: a collective crime (October 20, 2025), makes it indisputably clear that the countries supplying Israel with military equipment, or assisting it in any way – including through diplomatic support – are utterly complicit in the genocide.

In other words, the obligation to abide by the UN Convention on Genocide is not discretionary; the duty to do what they can to stop the genocide is mandatory. The participation makes them wholly culpable. The report notes that the Israeli genocide of the Palestinians in Gaza makes this “an internationally enabled crime”.

The level of complicity is extraordinary. Take the case of the United Kingdom, whose Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, is a human rights lawyer and indeed wrote the textbook on European human rights law (1999). On August 6, 2025, Matt Kennard told Palestine Deep Dive about how UK military aircraft left RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus and escorted an unidentified plane over Gaza. Six days later, Iain Overton at UK Declassified revealed that amongst these planes was an RAF Shadow R1 surveillance plane flying alongside a Beechcraft Super King Air 350 owned by the Sierra Nevada Corporation (from the United States) with a call sign CROOK 11. What were these aircraft doing? Who had sanctioned them this work? Who is CROOK 11?

In December 2024, Starmer told troops at RAF Akrotiri: “There’s a lot of different work that goes on. I’m also aware that some, or quite a bit, of what goes on here can’t necessarily be talked about all of the time…We can’t necessarily tell the world what you’re doing here…because although we’re not saying it to the whole world for reasons that are obvious to you”. The obvious reason is that this is a genocide, and the UK is complicit, so they cannot talk about it.

The record for the United States is even more ghastly. One paragraph from the Special Rapporteur’s report is damning enough:

Since October 2023, the US has transferred 742 consignments of “arms and ammunition” (HS Code 93) and approved tens of billions in new sales. The Biden and Trump Administrations reduced transparency, accelerated transfers through repeated emergency approvals, facilitated Israeli access to US weapons stockpile held abroad, and authorized hundreds of sales just below the amount requiring congressional approval. The US has deployed military aircraft, special forces and surveillance drones to Israel, with US surveillance purportedly being used to target Hamas, including in the first raid on Al Shifa hospital.

In November 2024, the International Criminal Court (ICC) filed a warrant for the arrest of Benjamin Netanyahu and Yoav Gallant. Based on this recent UN report, the ICC prosecutor, Karim Khan, should be obliged to file warrants against Rishi Sunak, Starmer, Olaf Scholz, Friedrich Merz, Joe Biden, and Donald Trump – at a minimum. Anything less makes a mockery of the rules-based international system, namely the United Nations Charter.
