“We’re entering an even more dangerous moment,” said foreign policy expert Matt Duss.

President Donald Trump may believe that his unprovoked and unconstitutional war with Iran is “very complete, pretty much,” but one foreign policy expert thinks that is highly wishful thinking.

Matt Duss, executive vice president at the Center for International Policy and former foreign policy adviser to Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), argued in a Tuesday social media post that the negative consequences of Trump’s attack on Iran are just starting to be felt, with no option for a quick ending.

“We’re entering an even more dangerous moment,” Duss wrote, “as the stupidity of this war becomes undeniable even to its supporters, who realize they’re about to be revealed as morons yet again and are desperate to turn this into something they can spin as a win. Their only option is escalation.”

Shortly before Duss offered his analysis of the situation, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth held a news conference in which he dialed up belligerent rhetoric against Iran while declaring the war “a laser-focused, maximum-authority mission, delivered with overwhelming and unrelenting precision.”

“No hesitation, no half measures,” Hegseth continued. “As President Trump declared yesterday, we’re crushing the enemy in an overwhelming display of technical skill and military force.”

Hegseth’s bluster did not impress Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), who vowed on Tuesday to drag Hegseth before the Senate to answer questions about the war, which the president launched early on a Saturday morning without any authorization from the US Congress.

“I’m joining together with my allies in the United States Senate to use the leverage we have to force a debate and a vote in the Senate on the authorization of war,” Murphy said. “I think if the Senate took that vote, it would fail, and that would allow us to stop this illegal, disastrous war in Iran.”

Murphy went on to note that “the Constitution is crystal clear” that Trump does not have the power to unilaterally declare war, even though that is precisely what he did less than two weeks ago.

“You should be furious about that,” Murphy said, “because this is maybe the most dangerous thing a president can do: Send your sons and daughters to die overseas without your consent.”

Murphy’s statement earned kudos from Duss, who promoted his message on social media.

“This is the way,” wrote Duss. “No business as usual.”

US President Donald Trump said the war with Iran is “very complete”, claiming that the country’s naval, air and communications capabilities have been destroyed, and revealing that he has someone in mind to replace the new Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei if he is assassinated.

Speaking in remarks reported by US media, Trump said: “I think the war is very complete, pretty much. They have no navy, no communications, no air force.”

He added that he has “somebody in mind to replace Mojtaba Khamenei”, but did not reveal the person’s identity.

Separately, Western media reported that Trump had told his advisers he would be ready to support the assassination of the new Iranian Supreme Leader if he refuses to meet US demands.

According to The Wall Street Journal, citing US officials on Monday, Trump told aides he would back the killing of Khamenei if he declined to comply with American demands, including ending Iran’s nuclear programme.

However, the newspaper said that Israel — not the United States — would be expected to carry out any direct assassination of the Iranian leader.

Minab school bombing: what evidence is there that the US was responsible?

Trump has blamed Iran for the mass killing at Shajareh Tayyebeh primary school but geolocation, videos and satellite imagery indicate otherwise

The bombing of a primary school in Minab on 28 February killed scores of people, most of them seven- to 12-year-old girls. The strike is the worst mass killing of the US and Israel’s war on Iran so far – and has been described by Unesco as a “grave violation” of international law.

On Saturday, the US president, Donald Trump, declared that Iran was responsible for the school bombing. “In my opinion, based on what I’ve seen, that was done by Iran … they’re very inaccurate, as you know, with their munitions. They have no accuracy whatsoever. It was done by Iran.”

The president presented no evidence for his claim. His assertion has not been repeated by spokespeople for the US military, who have said only that they are “investigating” the bombing.

But a growing body of evidence indicates that the strike on the Shajareh Tayyebeh primary school was carried out by the US. Here is what we know – and why it points to the US being responsible.

Morning Star Editorial: Britain is drifting into Donald Trump’s war. That has to be stopped

The son of a Lebanese soldier, cries as he sits on his father’s coffin who was killed by Israeli airstrikes, during a funeral procession in Khraibeh village, eastern Lebanon, March 8, 2026

Rudderless and unprincipled, Britain bobs along in the wake of a crazed US regime which is bulldozing the architecture of international law and the entire postwar system.

The shadow of fascism we see in the Trump administration’s brutal domestic record — especially the lethal violence inflicted on US cities by the Ice agency — looms in its foreign policy too.

We know that Marco Rubio at the Munich Security Conference cited the end of the second world war as the moment European greatness died and its “vast empires” began their retreat before “godless communist revolutions and anti-colonial uprisings.”

We know that Trump has resumed the open celebration of conflict characteristic of fascism, renaming the Defence Secretary the Secretary of War; and that that Secretary of War Pete Hegseth says openly and repeatedly that the US no longer cares about the legality of its conduct.

This year, so far, has been one of uninterrupted US aggression on multiple fronts. And if Donald Trump is not stopped, that aggression will keep escalating until we are faced with world war between nuclear powers.

Ignore the ranting Islamophobes of the right: it is not the anti-war left repeating Neville Chamberlain’s policy of appeasement. Trump’s United States is the rampaging power threatening world peace. The appeasers are those who won’t stand up to him.

So it is important to be clear. Victory for the US and Israel in Iran would be far more dangerous for the world than any other outcome in this war.

That is nothing to do with sympathising with the Iranian state or political system. It is simply acknowledging the reality that if Trump wins he is going to start more and bigger wars: and this one is already engulfing much of the Middle East.

So we must challenge the despatch of British ships to the Gulf, the use of British bases to attack Iran and any engagement of British forces in this war. We are assisting a calamitous project that threatens the whole world.

The public are with us; some MPs, though not enough, are speaking out. But it will take a political revolution to detach Britain from the US war machine. That should now be a priority task for everyone on the left.
