Richard Blakeway says 474% increase in complaints to his office in last five years points to risk of ‘social disquiet’

The housing ombudsman has warned “simmering anger at poor housing conditions” could boil over into social tension as his office recorded a 474% increase in complaints about substandard living conditions since 2019/20.

Richard Blakeway, the housing ombudsman for England, said repairs were now the single biggest driver of complaints his office deals with, accounting for 45% of its workload.

“Without change we effectively risk the managed decline of one of the largest provisions of social housing in Europe,” he said. “To replace these homes would take more than 60 years at recent building rates.”

He said it was “neither fanciful nor alarmist” to suggest the growing anger at housing conditions could become “social disquiet”, saying the “shock of Grenfell Tower and Awaab Ishak’s death resonate still”.

“I travel across the country to different public meetings and there is a sense of people feeling invisible, of voices not being heard, their issues not being taken seriously, a lack of respect and dignity in the way in which residents have been treated. It is leading to a really serious fracturing of trust, which in some cases is irreparable,” he said.

Home Farm Road, where L3Harris Factory operates, covered in fake blood with the message ‘L3Harris KILLS KIDS’

ACTIVISTS targeted an arms factory in Brighton which makes parts for fighter jets used by the Israeli military on Thursday.

The protesters sprayed the L3Harris factory with fake red blood and scrawled “L3Harris kills kids” near the entrance.

The firm continues to make bomb release mechanisms for F-35 fighter jets, which were excluded from the government’s embargo on 30 arms licences to Israel last month.

The jets have been used to drop 2,000lb bombs on Gaza and now in Israel’s attacks on Lebanon.

Locals have been campaigning for the factory’s landlord Paxton Access to evict the firm from the premises.

The community-wide campaign, spearheaded by StopL3Harris, has also called on the local council as freeholders of the land to shut it down.

THE government’s failure to tackle the growing exodus from the NHS workforce has left morale among dentists at an all-time low, official data shows.

Figures reveal that 64 per cent of dentists in England are thinking of leaving the NHS.

The British Dental Association (BDA) has described the government’s recent recovery plan as “unworthy of the title” and hit out at the “non-stop spin from ministers attempting to defend their unambitious and unfunded policies.”

It also slammed the Tories for rejecting the health and social care committee’s key recommendation to break with the discredited NHS contract, “which is fuelling this exodus.”

Any progress will “hinge on real reform and sustainable funding,” it said.

Vehicles queue in heavy traffic in south London

ENVIRONMENT campaigners have told Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to “stop playing politics” over London’s anti-pollution Ulez regulations.

Instead he should work with the capital’s Mayor Sadiq Khan and provide government funding for working people to replace polluting vehicles, Greenpeace said.

Greenpeace UK clean air campaigner Paul Morozzo said: “Rishi Sunak has a legal obligation to cut harmful pollution levels across the UK.

“So instead of playing politics with such a vital issue, he should work with the London mayor to provide proper financial support for working people wanting to get rid of older, more polluting vehicles.”

Meteorologists are monitoring what they believe to be record-breaking marine heatwaves off northeast England and northwest Ireland.

Sea temperatures around the UK and Irish coasts are up to five degrees Celsius warmer than normal for this time of year, smashing records.

Parts of the North Sea are in a category four “extreme” marine heatwave, the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has warned.

Temperatures are particularly high around the north-east coast of England and the west of Ireland.

Warming seas could bring jellyfish and basking sharks closer to the shore, and cause poisonous algae to bloom.

The marine heatwave has deeply concerned marine scientists.
