The two-month-long siege is a “clear and calculated effort to collectively punish over two million civilians and to make Gaza unlivable.”

“This is genocide in action,” said one official with Amnesty International on Friday, referring to Israel’s two-month humanitarian blockade in Gaza which has resulted in death, starvation, and suffering on a nearly unimaginable scale.

The human rights group is demanding that Israel’s allies, including the United States, take immediate action to ensure the Israeli government lifts the total aid blockade that’s plunged the enclave into what the United Nations has called “mass starvation,” with food supplies rapidly dwindling and thousands of children diagnosed with acute malnutrition.

“The international community must not continue to stand by as Israel perpetrates these atrocities with impunity,” said Erika Guevara Rosas, Amnesty’s senior director for research, advocacy, policy, and campaigns.

After a brief cease-fire, Israel reimposed a ban on the entry of commercial goods and aid into Gaza on March 2 and cut off power to the enclave’s desalination plant, after it had been briefly reconnected to electricity. The plant’s blackout has worsened water scarcity that’s plagued Gaza for all of Israel’s 17-year blockade and has left some Palestinians resorting to drinking seawater.

A spokesperson for the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) told reporters in Geneva on Friday that the agency is in “constant contact” with Israeli authorities as it advocates for the reopening of border crossings.

“We don’t ask if food is nutritious or not, if it’s fresh or good; that’ a luxury, we just want to fill the stomachs of our children. I don’t want my child to die hungry.”

“Food stocks have now mainly run out, water access has become impossible,” Olga Cherevko said, leaving children “who have been deprived of their childhood for many months… rummaging through piles of trash” in search of food and combustible material to burn for cooking, due to rapidly shrinking supplies of fuel.

“Gaza is inching closer to running on empty,” said Cherevko.

Amnesty interviewed 35 internally displaced people about the forced starvation crisis facing Gaza, which began again shortly before Israel resumed its bombardment of the enclave on March 18—killing at least 2,325 people including 820 children since then.

With the severe food scarcity being “exploited by individuals hoarding or looting supplies, selling them at extortionate prices,” according to Amnesty, most Palestinians are relying on overcrowded charity kitchens where they can wait for hours each day for just one meal.

“We don’t ask if food is nutritious or not, if it’s fresh or good; that’ a luxury, we just want to fill the stomachs of our children. I don’t want my child to die hungry,” one parent told the aid group.

Another described sending their son to wait in line for drinking water “for hours and he had to walk long distances.”

“With the relentless bombardment and danger lurking everywhere, you don’t know,” said the parent. “You may send your child to bring water only for him to return in a body bag. Every day is like this here.”

OCHA has reported that 92% of infants and pregnant and breastfeeding mothers are not meeting their nutrient requirements, while the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) released a statement Friday warning that malnutrition among children is on the rise across the enclave.

“More than 9,000 children have been admitted for treatment of acute malnutrition since the beginning of the year,” said Catherine Russell, executive director UNICEF. “Hundreds more children in desperate need of treatment are not able to access it due to the insecurity and displacement.”

“For two months, children in the Gaza Strip have faced relentless bombardments while being deprived of essential goods, services and lifesaving care. With each passing day of the aid blockade, they face the growing risk of starvation, illness, and death—nothing can justify this,” Russell added.

One doctor at Al-Rantissi pediatric hospital in Gaza City told Amnesty that healthcare workers have observed “the impact of the hunger on the children who come here to receive treatment… You recommend that the parent give the child specific attention, specific food, and you know that what you are recommending is an impossibility.”

The two-month mark of the current siege came as the International Court of Justice held public hearings this week on Israel’s humanitarian obligations in Gaza. The ICJ has previously ordered Israel to prevent genocide in Gaza and to allow humanitarian aid into the enclave.

Amnesty argued that the “cruel and inhumane siege” offers “further evidence of Israel’s genocidal intent in Gaza.”

“Apart from a brief respite during the temporary truce, Israel has relentlessly and mercilessly turned Gaza into an inferno of death and destruction,” Erika Guevara Rosas said. “For the past two months, Israel has completely cut off the supply of humanitarian aid and other items indispensable to the survival of civilians in a clear and calculated effort to collectively punish over two million civilians and to make Gaza unlivable.”

Mohamad Safa, CEO and representative to the U.N. for the non-governmental organization Patriotic Vision, emphasized that the crisis that is gripping Gaza is “not famine,” but rather “forced starvation.”

“”Forced starvation is an act of genocide,” he said.

U.S. Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.), the only Palestinian-American member of Congress, repeated her call for an arms embargo on Israel, which counts the U.S. as the largest international funder of its military.

“The government of Israel is starving Gaza to death,” said Tlaib. “It’s a war crime to use starvation as a weapon. The only way to end this genocide is with an arms embargo. Time for my colleagues to end their silence.”

Guevara Rosas accused the international community, especially Israel’s allies, of “contemptible failure to live up to their legal responsibilities to prevent and bring an end to Israel’s genocide in Gaza.”

“These states’ decades of inaction helped establish pervasive impunity for Israel’s persistent violations and it is now exacting an unprecedented toll of death, destruction, and suffering on Palestinians,” said Guevara Rosas. “States must take action to render Israel’s violations against Palestinians politically, diplomatically, and economically unsustainable—the siege on Gaza must end now.”

Drones attack civilian ship on its way to Gaza with humanitarian aid off Maltese coast

AN ACTIVIST-RUN ship on a mission to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza was attacked by drones in international waters off the coast of Malta this morning, its organisers said.

The Conscience, a 68-metre-long passenger ship carrying volunteers from the Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC), set sail from the Mediterranean island nation to the besieged Palestinian territory on Thursday.

The grassroots solidarity movement whose goal is to end Israel’s two-month illegal blockade of Gaza said they had been organising the non-violent action under a ”media black out” in hopes of avoiding any potential sabotage.

But the Conscience didn’t make it very far.

At 12:23am this morning, two weaponised drones ”attacked the front of an unarmed civilian vessel twice, causing a fire and a substantial breach in the hull,” the FFC said.

Video filmed from the ship and posted on FFC’s social media channels today didn’t show the drones. But it did show a large fire blazing on the bow, and two loud bangs.

Experiencing issues with this image not appearing. I suspect because it's so critical of Zionist Keir Starmer's support of and complicity in Israel's genocides.

Britain’s joint air strikes on Yemen are another dangerous escalation

A Yemeni soldier inspects the damage reportedly caused by U.S. airstrikes in Sanaa, Yemen, April 27, 2025

WHILE today electors endured the rituals of our vastly undemocratic electoral system, Britain was at war. As we approach the anniversary of the victory over fascism in Europe, the Royal Air Force is in action against our former colonial subjects in the Yemen.

Far from defending our shores from foreign invaders, the Royal Air Force is attacking Yemeni targets in co-ordination with Donald Trump’s military as part of the multi-national operation in the Middle East in defence of Israel.

Parliament has not met to discuss launching a war, the British people have not been consulted and only the most alert will have noticed this dangerous escalation in a region where British public opinion is overwhelmingly in sympathy with the Palestinian people who, both in devastated Gaza and in the Occupied Territories and the West Bank, are bearing the brunt of Israel’s genocidal attack.

Make no mistake, US and British logistical support allows Israel’s assault on the Palestinian people. It is a joint operation with intelligence and communications support from British military assets in the region including in Cyprus where an unequal treaty imposed on that country permits Britain to maintain military bases, airfields and electronic intelligence gathering installations.

Long deployed to Israel’s strategic advantage, now these assets are targeted on Yemenis who have leveraged their advantageous strategic position aside the Red Sea and the approaches to the Suez Canal to interdict shipping they suspect of supplying Israel.

STUC to call on British government to end arms sales to Israel and the Scottish government to end enterprise grants for weapons manufacturers

THE final session of this year’s STUC passed seven motions in solidarity with the people of Palestine and Gaza today.

After attempts at compositing the motions failed, each passed individually, meaning the STUC will now call on the British government to end arms sales to Israel and the Scottish government to ensure no more Scottish Enterprise grants are handed over to weapons manufacturers.

More than £3 million of Scottish government cash has been handed over to manufacturers such as BAE Systems, Leonardo and Raytheon since 2023, while the firms continue to supply the Israeli military’s assault on Gaza. PCS general secretary Fran Heathcote told delegates: “We cannot be bystanders, we cannot walk by on the other side as we witness what is now widely accepted as a genocide. “The ICJ has ruled there is a plausible case, and Amnesty International have now confirmed that.“Fifty-eight years of illegal occupation, decades of settlement building, an ethnic cleansing, Israel’s Gaza onslaught has killed at least 60,000 people since 2023, and the Lancet has estimated the real figure could be 180,000 dead.

UNRWA Chief Accuses Israel of Torturing Staff as US Backs Ban on Agency at World Court

Nearly 300 UNRWA workers have been killed in Israeli attacks since October 2023, and dozens of other agency staffers have alleged torture during Israel Defense Forces detention.

As the International Court of Justice this week weighs an Israeli ban on a United Nations agency that provides lifesaving aid in Gaza, the program’s leader called out attacks on its workers while the United States defended Israel—the recipient of billions of dollars in U.S. military assistance.

The ICJ is holding a week of hearings in The Hague, Netherlands following the U.N. General Assembly’s December passage of a Norwegian-led resolution asking the tribunal, which is also known as the World Court, for an advisory opinion on Israel’s legal obligation to “ensure and facilitate the unhindered provision of urgently needed supplies essential to the survival of the Palestinian civilian population.”

Among the 38 nations and three regional blocs scheduled to address the 15 ICJ judges, only the United States and Hungary have so far defended Israel, whose forces have killed nearly 300 United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) workers during their nearly 19-month annihilation of Gaza.

“An occupational power retains a margin of appreciation concerning which relief schemes to permit,” U.S. State Department legal adviser Joshua Simmons argued before the court Wednesday, referring to Israel’s 58-year occupation of Palestine, which the ICJ ruled an illegal form of apartheid in a June 2024 advisory opinion.

“Even if an organization offering relief is an impartial humanitarian organization, and even if it is a major actor, occupation law does not compel an occupational power to allow and facilitate that specific actor’s relief operations,” Simmons continued, noting “serious concerns about UNRWA’s impartiality, including information that Hamas has used UNRWA facilities and that UNRWA staff participated in the October 7th terrorist attack against Israel” in 2023.

“Given these concerns, it is clear that Israel has no obligation to permit UNRWA specifically to provide humanitarian assistance,” Simmons added. “UNRWA is not the only option for providing humanitarian assistance in Gaza.”

In what UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini described at the time as an act of “reverse due process,” the agency fired nine employees in February 2024 following Israeli allegations that they were involved in the Hamas-led attack on Israel in which more than 1,100 Israelis were killed and 251 Israeli and foreign survivors were kidnapped.

Lazzarini admitted to terminating the staffers without due process or an adequate investigation of Israel’s claims. A subsequent probe by the U.N. Office of Oversight Services “was not able to independently authenticate information used by Israel to support the allegations.”

On Tuesday, Lazzarini reminded the world that “over 50 UNRWA staff—among them teachers, doctors, social workers—have been detained and abused” by Israeli forces since October 2023.

“They have been treated in the most shocking and inhumane way,” he continued. “They reported being beaten up and used as human shields. They were subjected to sleep deprivation, humiliation, threats of harm to them and their families, and attacks by dogs. Many were subjected to forced confessions.”

Those forced confessions spurred numerous nations including the United States to cut off funding to UNRWA. Almost all of the countries have since restored funding as Israel’s claims have been debunked or questioned over a lack of evidence.

The U.S.—which has not restored funding for UNRWA—earlier this week abandoned its long-standing position that the body is immune from lawsuits, opening the door for cases by October 7 survivors and victims’ relatives stemming from dubious claims of agency involvement in the attack.

In addition to accusing Israeli troops of torturing its staffers, UNRWA has also documented tortures allegedly suffered by Palestinians imprisoned by Israel, including interrupted drowning—also known as waterboarding—being shot in the knees with nail guns, sexual abuse of both men and women, and being sodomized with electric batons. The Israel Defense Forces is investigating dozens of in-custody deaths, many of them at the notorious Sde Teiman base in the Negev Desert.

While Israel’s physical assault on Gaza has killed hundreds of UNRWA workers, its diplomatic war on the U.N. has seen the agency banned from operating in Palestine and U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres declared “persona non grata” in Israel after he included Israel on his 2024 “list of shame” of countries and armed groups that kill and injure children during wartime.

The U.S.-backed 572-day war waged by the far-right government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu—who is a fugitive from the International Criminal Court—has left more than 184,000 Palestinians dead, maimed, or missing in Gaza, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. Nearly all of the embattled enclave’s more than 2 million people have been forcibly displaced and Israel’s “complete siege” of the coastal strip has fueled widespread starvation and illness.

This week’s ICJ hearing comes amid the tribunal’s ongoing genocide case against Israel, which was brought by South Africa and is backed by dozens of nations either individually or via regional blocs. The court has issued three provisional orders in the case, all of which Israel has been accused of flouting.

Responding to the U.S. intervention in this week’s ICJ hearings, Palestinian Ambassador to the Netherlands Ammar Hijazi told Middle East Eye that “everybody knows that Israel is using humanitarian aid as a weapon of war and is starving the population in Gaza because of that.”

U.N. agencies and international humanitarian groups have warned in recent days of the imminent risk of renewed famine in Gaza as food stocks run out.

“ #Gaza: children are starving. The Government of Israel continues to block the entry of food and other basics.A manmade and politically motivated starvation.Nearly 2 months of siege.Calls to bring in supplies are going unheeded.”— UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini

UNRWA (@unrwa.org) 2025-04-27T08:38:54.197Z

“The U.S. intervention is very narrow in its scope, when it highlights the rights of an occupying power but ignores the so many layers of duties of that occupying power that Israel is in violation of,” Hijazi added.

Among the countries defending UNRWA during Wednesday’s ICJ session were Indonesia and Russia, which is currently waging a war against Ukraine. Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono affirmed “the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination,” while Maksim Musikhin, legal director of Russia’s Foreign Ministry, argued that “international law should be respected by Israel” and that UNRWA deserves a Nobel Peace Prize.
