Equinor, which owns the majority of the oil field, stressed it was committed to advancing the ‘Rosebank project’

Climate campaigners have challenged the UK Government to “do the right thing” and turn down plans for drilling in the Rosebank oil field.

The group Uplift – which wants to see a “rapid and fair transition away from oil and gas production in the UK” – said whether the green light is granted for the development would be the “defining test of this Government’s credibility on climate change”.

It came as it was confirmed Equinor, which owns an 80% majority stake in the oil field, confirmed it has submitted a scope 3 assessment – setting out all associated greenhouse gas emissions for the project, in compliance with new guidelines from UK authorities.

And the company said it is “fully committed” to working with all relevant bodies to “advance the Rosebank project”.

The Rosebank field, which is located some 80 miles west of Shetland, is the UK’s largest untapped oil field and is estimated to contain up to 300 million barrels of oil.

Robin Wells, director of Fossil Free London, said: “In the face of this decision on the biggest undeveloped oil field in the North Sea, we must be crystal clear. Rosebank will be the defining test of this Government’s climate promise.”

Oil companies’ tax cuts for job demand branded ‘extortion’

The oil platform Stena Spey is moved with tugboats amongst other rigs that have been left in the Cromarty Firth near Invergordon in the Highlands of Scotland

ENVIRONMENTAL campaigners dismissed oil industry demands for tax cuts to safeguard jobs and the supply chain as “extortion” today.

Friends of the Earth Scotland’s comments come after trade association Offshore Energies UK (OEUK) published an open letter to industry minister Chris McDonald, urging the government to work with it to phase out the temporary Energy Profits Levy (EPL) or windfall tax, and implement a permanent tax regime from 2026.

OEUK argued that if the government does as it proposes, the present 1,000 jobs a month being lost in the sector could be turned around to generate 23,000 additional jobs by 2030, add £137bn to the economy and “safeguard the UK’s energy transition.”

But FoE’s Rosie Hampton was unconvinced, saying: “This menacing letter is little more than extortion with the oil and gas industry threatening to sack even more workers if they aren’t allowed to make larger profits.

“Energy companies have made off with over a half a trillion pounds in profits since the start of the energy price crisis, yet they are consistently whingeing about having to pay a tiny fraction of this back to fund the vital public services.

“Jobs in oil and gas have halved since 2014 despite hundreds of licences issued during that time.

Greenpeace threatens to sue crown estate for driving up cost of offshore wind

Environmental group accuses king’s property management company of ‘milking for profit’ its monopoly ownership of seabed

Greenpeace is threatening to sue King Charles’s property management company, accusing it of exploiting its monopoly ownership of the seabed.

The environmental lobby group alleges the crown estate has driven up costs for wind power developers and boosted its own profits, as well as the royal household’s income, due to the “aggressive” way it auctions seabed rights.

The crown estate, as the legal owner of the seabed around England, Wales and Northern Ireland, is responsible for auctioning offshore wind rights. It has benefited from the huge growth in the industry, commanding hefty option fees from renewable energy developers to secure areas of the seabed to build their windfarms.

It made a £1.1bn profit in its financial year ended in March, double its level just two years ago.

Will McCallum, co-executive director at Greenpeace UK, said the estate should be “managing the seabed in the interest of the nation and the common good, not as an asset to be milked for profit and outrageous bonuses”.

“We should leave no stone unturned in looking for solutions to lower energy bills that are causing misery to millions of households,” he said.

Climate investment is only growth opportunity of 21st century, says leading economist

Lord Stern says fossil-fuelled growth is futile as the damage it causes ends in economic self-destruction

Investment in climate action is the economic growth story of the 21st century, while growth fuelled by fossil fuels is futile because the damage it causes ends in self-destruction, the economist Nicholas Stern has said.

The plummeting costs of clean technologies, from renewable energy to electric cars, plus the healthier and more productive societies they enable, meant investments could simultaneously tackle the climate crisis and faltering economic growth, and bring millions of people out of poverty, he said.

This requires big changes in policies and levels of investment and Stern, at the London School of Economics, acknowledged that the geopolitical environment was currently difficult but he said making the rational argument was vital. The US president, Donald Trump, recently called climate change a “con job” and is backing fossil fuel companies to “drill, baby, drill”.

“I’d say to Trump: ‘You’ve got children and grandchildren – think about the science, think about the risks,’ and I’d give examples about the wildfires in California,” said Stern. “I’d point out to him that his place in Florida is going to be extremely vulnerable to more intense hurricanes, sea level rise and storm surges. The people and places he loves are under severe risk.

Every constituency projected to be at greater risk, with many areas likely to be uninsurable, Guardian investigation finds

Millions more homes in England, Scotland and Wales face devastating floods, and some towns may have to be abandoned as climate breakdown makes many areas uninsurable, a Guardian investigation has found.

New analysis from the insurance industry, seen by the Guardian, reveals the extent of concern in the sector, with bosses warning that large swathes of housing and commercial property in densely populated areas will be at greater risk.

Separately, experts have said that some towns may need to be abandoned as homes and businesses struggle to get insurance in areas repeatedly battered by storms and rising sea levels.

Densely populated areas including London, Manchester and parts of north-east England, are likely to be worst hit. Experts also say London’s flood defences need to be updated urgently to protect the capital from devastating floods.
