The German Federal Republic may have made false statements at the very beginning of the trial before the UN’s highest court.
Since April 2024, Germany has been on trial before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague. Nicaragua had filed a case against the Federal Republic, accusing it of complicity in the genocide in Gaza. As has now become known, German representatives may have made false statements in their very first testimony before the ICJ in April 2024, concerning the arms exports delivered to Israel.
“Not disclosed”
As Drop Site News (DSN) and the liberal German magazine Stern reported in a joint article, there are now serious doubts about Germany’s statements. They cite comments from the German Defense Ministry, obtained through a press law procedure before a German administrative court. According to these documents, the ministry stated that its testimony before the ICJ in April 2024 had been made “in agreement with the affected state,” meaning Israel. The ministry also admitted that “the differentiated information on Bundeswehr exports,” was “not disclosed in the proceedings before the ICJ.” The Defense Ministry argued before the court that it could not release information about transfers to specific countries “for reasons of contractually agreed confidentiality”, since doing so could seriously damage the trust between Germany and Israel.
Following the “Al-Aqsa Flood” operation and the beginning of the Gaza genocide in October 2023, the value of German military exports to Israel increased tenfold overnight. The Federal Republic thus became, after the United States, the second most important supplier of weapons to the Zionist regime; at one point, a third of Israel’s weapons were said to have come from Germany. By mid-May 2025, successive German governments had approved arms deliveries worth 485 million euros. Added to this were donations from the Bundeswehr’s own stocks to the IDF.
It is these donations that DSN and Stern have raised doubts about. German representatives had claimed before the ICJ that in 2023 no weapons of war but only “medical supplies and helmets” had been delivered to Israel from Bundeswehr inventories. Lea Reisner, spokeswoman for the Left Party in the German parliament, commented to the German left-wing daily junge Welt: “For many months, the federal government has been deceiving the public about the extent of German arms deliveries to Israel – and now, apparently, also the International Court of Justice.”
Growing pressure
While the fact that Germany is standing trial in The Hague on charges of complicity in a new genocide has been largely ignored within the dominant discourse in Germany, Nicaragua’s case nonetheless appears to have exerted considerable pressure on the German government. Over the course of 2024, the number of weapons delivered by Germany to Israel fell sharply, without any official explanation. Even the state broadcaster Deutsche Welle (which reports far more critically in English than in German in order to project an image of Germany as a country with a critical media landscape, which is just not true) suggested that the decline may be linked to the ICJ case.
In August 2025, the current chancellor, Friedrich Merz, announced that Germany would no longer supply weapons to Israel “that can be used in Gaza”. It quickly became clear, however, that this referred only to new export licenses, while previously approved arms shipments were unaffected. Moreover, Israel’s navy received new warships and submarines from Germany immediately after Merz’s announcement, even though it plays a central role in the illegal blockade of the Gaza Strip.
Nevertheless, this surprising step by the German government shows that even in Berlin there was a perceived need to take measures that at least appear to resemble sanctions.
And the possible fact that the Federal Republic may have made false statements at the very beginning of the trial before the UN’s highest court can also be seen as an indication that those in power in Berlin are fully aware that their policy of so-called “German Staatsräson” violates international law. This affair, however, is unlikely to do much for Germany’s credibility before the ICJ.

Israel’s Defence Ministry said Wednesday that its 1,000th aircraft in an ongoing Western airlift since the start of the Gaza genocide had landed in the country, bringing total military cargo delivered since 8 October 2023 to more than 120,000 tons, Anadolu Agency reported.
The announcement comes as the US continues to support Tel Aviv during the Gaza war, with some Western governments criticising Israeli actions and imposing restrictions on arms exports.
Spain issued a royal decree in September imposing a full arms embargo on Israel, while last year the UK, Germany, and Canada imposed limits on weapons transfers.
“The 1,000th aircraft in the comprehensive military equipment and weapons airlift operation, which commenced immediately following the outbreak of war, has landed in Israel,” said a ministry statement, calling the operation “unprecedented” in Israeli history.
The aircraft, carrying a large shipment of military equipment, was received by Defence Ministry Director-General Maj. Gen. Amir Baram, the ministry said.
“To date, over 120,000 tons of military equipment, munitions, weapons systems, and protective gear have been transferred to Israel via 1,000 aircraft and approximately 150 maritime vessels,” the statement added.
The statement did not specify the exact origins of the shipments. However, it said the operation is jointly managed by the Defence Ministry’s Procurement Directorate, through the International Defence Transportation Unit, the ministry’s missions in the US and Berlin, the army’s Planning and Force Build-Up Directorate, and the Israeli Air Force.
An October report by the Washington-based Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft said the US has provided Israel with at least $21.7 billion in military assistance since the start of the Gaza genocide two years ago.
After October 2023, the US supplied $17.9 billion in military aid during the term of former President Joe Biden, and $3.8 billion under current President Donald Trump, according to the report. Some of that assistance has already been delivered, while the remainder will arrive in the coming years.
The report said Israel would not be able to continue its genocide in Gaza without US support.
Since October 2023, the Israeli army has killed nearly 70,000 people in Gaza, mostly women and children, injured over 170,000, and reduced most of the enclave to rubble.

The UN humanitarian office on Wednesday warned that the situation in the Gaza Strip remains “extremely dire,” despite ongoing efforts by the UN and its partners to reach civilians across the territory where a ceasefire is in place after two years of Israeli war, Anadolu reports.
In a statement, the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) warned that “the humanitarian situation in Gaza remains extremely dire, despite ongoing efforts by the UN and its partners to reach people in need wherever they are.”
Saying that “humanitarians continue to carry out assessments and provide assistance to families affected by last week’s rainstorm,” OCHA reported that “over 18,600 households were impacted.”
Thousands of families “lost their shelters, had their belongings damaged, or were again displaced,” the agency said, adding that the number continues to rise as assessments are completed.
“With winter drawing near, partners working on shelter warn that the volume of items entering Gaza is not sufficient to meet people’s immense needs,” OCHA said, stressing that since Sept., fewer than 60,000 tents, 346,000 tarpaulins and 309,000 bedding items have entered Gaza, even as hundreds of thousands urgently require shelter support.
OCHA reiterated its call for “items that are currently restricted from entry into Gaza, including equipment to rehabilitate critical infrastructure,” to be allowed in.
It also re-emphasized “the need for NGOs to be permitted to bring assistance into Gaza, and for the opening of additional crossings” to ensure faster and more efficient aid delivery.

The United States has informed mediating countries and states expected to contribute forces to an international security mission in Gaza that it will allow Israel to resume military operations if Hamas does not disarm, according to a report by the Israeli newspaper Israel Hayom.
The newspaper said that Washington conveyed this position explicitly during UN Security Council deliberations on the future of the Gaza Strip. US ambassador to the UN, Mike Waltz, reportedly reaffirmed the stance in internal discussions with American representatives involved in the resolution’s negotiations.
US officials have also relayed the same message to Israeli political leaders and military commanders, including during talks with the Israel Defence Forces at the Civil-Military Coordination Centre (CMCC) in Kiryat Gat, according to the report. Washington emphasised its commitment to the full disarmament of Hamas and the dismantling of its military infrastructure in Gaza.
Israeli political sources told the newspaper that the US set two immediate priorities following the Security Council’s adoption of the Gaza resolution: the establishment of an international force to operate inside the Gaza Strip, and preventing Hamas from controlling the entry and distribution of supplies into the besieged territory.
However, the formation of such a force faces significant obstacles. So far, no country has agreed to deploy troops that could become involved in direct confrontations with Hamas.
The US position comes amid ongoing negotiations over Gaza’s post-war governance and security arrangements and reflects Washington’s insistence that any political or humanitarian framework must ensure Hamas cannot regain military control.
