Israel has killed more than 10 per cent of Gaza’s population since the start of the genocide in October 2023. The statistics, now reported by mainstream media as they come directly from an Israeli source – none other than former army commander Herzi Halevi who was chief of staff for the Israeli military for 17 months of Israel’s genocide – confirm the annihilation directly from the perpetrators.

There is no more talk about Hamas exaggerating the statistics, although the Guardian repeats the statement that is part of mainstream official narrative about Hamas not distinguishing between civilians and resistance fighters. The picture that emerges is that of mainstream media reporting admission of genocide from a source that is responsible and culpable, after spending almost two years of denying the Palestinian people the chance to articulate the same statement as lived experience.

“This isn’t a gentle war,” Halevi is reported saying. “We took the gloves off from the first minute. Sadly not earlier.” This rhetorical pondering of not having indulged in genocide earlier only illustrates the historical intent to eradicate all Palestinians from Palestine. This is also an admission of how Israel can secure its existence through the obliteration of the indigenous.

Halevi asserted that he was never restricted on how to carry out the genocide and stated that Israel’s military attorney general “had no power to restrict me.” However, Halevi also repeated the claim that the Israeli military “operates within the constraints of international law.”

READ: Israel has committed genocide in Gaza, UN inquiry commission finds

According to a new UN report by the Independent Commission of Inquiry, Israel has committed four out of five acts of genocide as defined in the 1948 Geneva Convention.

Not one single international institution has taken genocide seriously. Gaza has been a major news focus, an area of research, an opportunity for rhetorical practice and futile debates, and a territory to test weapons and international parameters of human rights. That international institutions and world leaders are now catching up with what Palestinians have been saying since the start should read as an aberration of justice, not an upholding of it.

Even when quoting Israelis on genocide, the international community still finds space to debate the evidence instead of acting upon it. There have been other instances where Israeli officials clearly incited in favour of genocide and spoke openly of war crimes. Halevi’s comment, however, is statistical. Israel has killed over 10 per cent of Gaza’s population. What does that statistical data convey to the international community and what will be done about it?

The international community is not averse to statistics, but it certainly loathes interpreting them in ways that obliges action against Israel. The UN has published countless statistics on forced displacement, home demolitions, Palestinian prisoners, violence against Palestinian journalists, Palestinian minors in Israeli jails, depicting the severity of colonialism purely for embellishing the institution’s records. However, not one single statistical report has ever moved the UN to act against Israel. Maybe one should not even have that expectation because behind the veneer of human rights, the UN not only endorsed but also planned, Israel’s creation.

The international community is not helpless in the face of genocide; it is willing to see it through.

Palestinians examine the rubble of a building destroyed in an Israeli strike in Gaza City Monday, September 15, 2025

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio showed unwavering support for Israel today after meeting Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem, despite growing international anger over Israel’s air strikes on Hamas leaders in Qatar and its intensifying bombardment of Gaza City.

As the leaders of Arab and Muslim states met in the Qatari capital Doha to condemn last week’s attack on a Hamas leadership meeting there, Mr Rubio and Mr Netanyahu stood shoulder to shoulder and downplayed the outcry over the strike, even though US President Donald Trump had made clear his displeasure at Israel’s action.

The State Department said that Mr Rubio would travel to Qatar on Tuesday for a brief visit, as the US administration appears keen to ease tensions between its two close allies, before flying on to London to join Mr Trump on his state visit to Britain.

At least 64,718 Palestinians have been killed in Israel’s genocidal war on the Gaza Strip since October 2023, as seven more people, including a child, died of starvation in the besieged enclave, the Health Ministry said on Thursday.

A ministry statement said that 72 bodies were brought to hospitals in the last 24 hours, while 356 people were injured, taking the number of injuries to 163,859 in the Israeli onslaught.

“Many victims are still trapped under the rubble and on the roads as rescuers are unable to reach them,” it added.

The ministry also noted that nine Palestinians were killed and over 87 others injured by Israeli army fire while trying to get humanitarian aid in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of Palestinians killed while seeking aid to 2,465, with over 17,948 others wounded since 27 May.

The ministry said that seven more Palestinians, including a child, died of malnutrition and starvation in the last 24 hours. This brought the famine-linked death toll since October 2023 to 411 people, including 142 children.

According to the ministry, 133 of the deaths, 27 of them children, occurred after the UN-backed hunger monitoring system, Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), formally declared Gaza a famine zone last month.

Since 2 March, the Israeli authorities have completely closed all Gaza border crossings, pushing the territory’s 2.4 million population into famine.

The Israeli army resumed its attacks on the Gaza Strip on 18 March and has since killed 12,170 people and injured 51,818 others, shattering a ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement that took hold in January.

Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.

Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave.

QATAR’S Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani is demanding a “collective response” to Israel’s deadly attack on the Qatari capital Doha.

Sheikh Mohammed told US news channel CNN on Wednesday that “there is a response that will happen from the region. This response is currently under consultation and discussion with other partners in the region, adding that “the entire Gulf region is at risk.”

He accused Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of leading the region into “chaos” and hoped the response from Arab nations would be “something meaningful that deters Israel from continuing this bullying.”

The Qataris plan to host an Arab-Islamic summit on Sunday and Monday, the country’s QNA news agency reported.

Sheikh Mohammed also said that the Israeli strike was aimed at undermining “any chance of peace” in Gaza.

He said: “I think that what [Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu did yesterday — he just killed any hope for those [Israeli] hostages.”  Twenty captives are believed to be still alive in Gaza.

Even as there was widespread international condemnation of the attack on Doha, the Israeli prime minister threatened further attacks, saying that “Qatar and all nations who harbour terrorists, you either expel them or you bring them to justice. Because if you don’t, we will.”

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Jordan on Thursday condemned “hostile” statements made by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu against Qatar, Anadolu reports.

In a statement, the Foreign Ministry said Qatar’s security and stability are an “integral part” of that of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) nations, stressing that any assault on a GCC member state “constitutes an attack on the collective Gulf security framework.”

The ministry voiced the UAE’s “categorical rejection” of Netanyahu’s remarks, which it said included future threats against Qatar, warning that such rhetoric undermines regional stability and pushes the region toward “extremely dangerous trajectories.”

In a statement, the Jordanian Foreign Ministry said: “We strongly condemn the hostile threats and unacceptable escalatory statements made by the Israeli prime minister against sisterly Qatar and his desperate attempt to justify the blatant Israeli aggression against it.”

It affirmed “the Kingdom’s full solidarity with the State of Qatar, its security, stability, sovereignty, territorial integrity, and citizens, as well as its support for any measures Qatar may take to protect its security and sovereignty.”

The ministry also renewed its call on the international community to “assume its legal and moral responsibilities, compel Israel to halt its aggression on Gaza, its dangerous escalation in the West Bank, and its violations of the sovereignty of states and the UN Charter.”

Netanyahu’s remarks came amid mounting international criticism of Israel’s deadly strike on Hamas leaders in the Qatari capital Doha on Tuesday.

“You either expel them (Hamas) or you bring them to justice. Because if you don’t, we will,” Netanyahu addressed Qatar on Wednesday.

Netanyahu likened the Israeli assault on Doha to the US pursuit of Al-Qaeda following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Qatar swiftly rejected the comparison, branding it a “new, miserable justification for Israel’s treacherous practices” and a reckless violation of its sovereignty.

The Israeli strike killed five Hamas members and a Qatari security officer. Hamas confirmed that its leadership had survived the attack.

Qatar condemned the attack as a “cowardly act” and a blatant violation of international law, warning it would not tolerate Israel’s “reckless behavior.”

The Gulf state, along with the US and Egypt, has been playing a central role in efforts to mediate an end to Israel’s war on Gaza, which has killed more than 64,700 Palestinians since October 2023.
