A Palestinian journalist was killed in an Israeli strike in the southern Gaza Strip on Tuesday, despite a ceasefire agreement sponsored by US President Donald Trump, Anadolu reports.

Medical sources told Anadolu that photojournalist Mahmoud Wadi lost his life in an Israeli drone strike in central Khan Younis, an area that does not fall under the Israeli-controlled yellow zone.

There was no official statement from Gaza’s Government Media Office on the killing.

According to the latest figures published by the office in late October, Israel had killed 256 journalists in Gaza since Oct. 8, 2023. Wadi’s death brings the toll to 257.

Wadi’s father, Issam, described the Israeli strike as “an earthquake that struck the tent.”

“I never expected to lose Mahmoud, who was not just my son but a friend, as he grew up in a photography studio,” the grieved father told Anadolu.

“Mahmoud was photographing in a safe area (not under Israeli control according to the ceasefire agreement), but the Israelis respect no pledges or promises; their entire life is treachery and deceit,” he said.

Criminal act

The Palestinian father called his son’s killing “a criminal act carried out by the Israeli occupation.”

“They (Israelis) will continue until destroying the whole world,” he said.

A colleague of the slain journalist, Muhammad Abu Ubaid, a correspondent for Al-Alam TV in Gaza, said Wadi was “known for his humanitarian work and helping people.”

“He may not be known to everyone, but the poor and afflicted know him well, because he devoted his time to assisting them,” he told Anadolu.

“Wadi was a pure-hearted person. I sat with him last night, we talked a lot, and he told me about his plans to raise his young son, who is his whole world.”

“We had an appointment today at Nasser Hospital (in Khan Younis), but I found out he had been martyred,” Abu Ubaid said in tears.

“The world is silent and watching, and the (Israeli) occupation continues to kill us and kill journalists despite the agreement.”

International media institutions have repeatedly called on Israel to stop fatal attacks on Palestinian journalists in the Gaza Strip, but Tel Aviv has ignored these appeals.

Palestinians see the deliberate targeting of Palestinian journalists by the Israeli army in the Gaza Strip as an attempt to cover up its crimes in the territory.

The ceasefire deal took effect in Gaza on Oct. 10 under Trump’s Gaza plan, halting two years of Israeli attacks that have killed more than 70,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, and injured over 171,000 others since October 2023.

Israel has repeatedly violated the agreement by opening fire on Palestinian civilians in areas it does not control under the deal, while the Palestinian group Hamas has announced its full commitment to the terms of the agreement and urged the US to pressure Israel to comply.

According to Gaza’s Health Ministry, at least 356 Palestinians have been killed and more than 900 others injured in Israeli attacks since the ceasefire.

UNRWA warns Gaza tents offer no protection as Israel blocks vital winter aid

Adnan Abu Hasna, media adviser to the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), said the agency has procured large quantities of food, medicine and winter shelter materials — including hundreds of thousands of tents, tarpaulins, blankets and clothing — but has been unable to deliver them to the Gaza Strip due to Israeli restrictions on aid entry.

Speaking to journalist Suzanne Sharara on the Extra News channel, Abu Hasna said the tents currently in use across Gaza are worn out and provide little protection from strong winds, heavy rainfall or rising tides. He noted that thousands of tents have been erected only five metres from the shoreline, leaving displaced families exposed to severe weather.

He added that UNRWA has been waiting for six months for permission to bring the supplies into Gaza, but Israel has allowed in only a fraction of what is needed, despite the “critical humanitarian situation” facing nearly 1.5 million Palestinians who are living in the open or in makeshift, damaged tents.

According to Abu Hasna, conditions in the Gaza Strip remain catastrophic. Around 9,400 children are suffering from acute malnutrition, the health system has collapsed and water sources have become contaminated — problems now compounded by winter rains and flooding.

He stressed that Gaza’s geography is predominantly sandy, with Israel controlling roughly 60 per cent of its territory, leaving more than two million Palestinians crowded into a very limited area amid extensive destruction and rubble.

An Israeli university professor has declared a hunger strike in protest at her arrest for calling Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu a “traitor”, according to Israeli media.

The Times of Israel reported on Tuesday that Yolanda Yavor, a lecturer at Tel Aviv University and a resident of Or Akiva in northern Israel, was detained on Friday on suspicion of “incitement to violence” over posts she published on Facebook targeting Netanyahu and other officials.

Yavor is currently being held at the Kishon detention facility in northern Israel. Her lawyer, who was not named, told the newspaper that the investigation is “politically motivated”, adding that she “poses no danger” and that her continued detention “endangers her life”.

According to the report, Yavor was arrested after urging a “rebellion” against Netanyahu, writing: “The only option is to fight the traitor, the mouthpieces and the damned collaborators with all our might and by all means – or we cease to exist.”

The Prime Minister’s Office has not commented on the arrest. Netanyahu has repeatedly claimed in recent years that he and his family are the targets of incitement.

4 Israeli soldiers injured in clashes in southern Gaza, military says

Four Israeli soldiers were injured in clashes with Hamas fighters in Rafah the southern Gaza Strip on Wednesday, the army said, Anadolu reports.

A military statement said that one of the soldiers was severely wounded, while three others sustained moderate injuries in eastern Rafah.

Channel 14 said that clashes erupted after three Palestinian fighters allegedly emerged from a tunnel in Rafah and fired anti-tank rockets at Israeli forces.

Israeli forces responded with fire from helicopters, with two fighters killed in direct fire, while a third Palestinian allegedly attached an explosive device to an Israeli armored vehicle before fleeing back into the tunnel, the channel said.

The public broadcaster KAN said an Israeli helicopter attacked the area to which the third Palestinian fled.

There was no immediate comment from Hamas on the reports.

According to Israeli media reports, there are around 200 Hamas fighters who are trapped inside underground tunnels in Rafah, and Tel Aviv has not yet responded to demands by Hamas and mediators to allow them safe passage to areas under the group’s control.

Separately, the Israeli army claimed that it had killed more than 40 Palestinian fighters over the past week in operations targeting tunnels in the area under its control in Rafah.

On Monday, US President Donald Trump asked Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during a phone call to clarify the crisis of the fighters trapped inside the Rafah tunnels.

According to Channel 12, Washington has attempted to reach an agreement between Israel and Hamas in recent weeks to let the fighters surrender in exchange for amnesty and a “safe corridor” to an area under Hamas control or to a third country.

“The US administration viewed this as a potential model for disarming Hamas, and it did not appreciate Israel’s refusal to cooperate with this approach,” it added.

A fragile ceasefire agreement has been in place in Gaza since Oct. 10, mediated by Türkiye, Egypt, and Qatar, backed by the US.

Phase one of the ceasefire deal includes the release of Israeli hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners. The plan also envisages the rebuilding of Gaza and the establishment of a new governing mechanism without Hamas.

Israel has killed more than 70,000 people, mostly women and children, and injured nearly 171,000 others in attacks in Gaza since October 2023.

Israel operating ‘de facto policy’ of torture against Palestinians, UN finds

Palestinian prisoners were brought to Abu Youssef Al-Najjar Hospital in Rafah in south of Gaza as a result of the torture inflicted upon them during detention by Israeli forces in inhumane conditions [Firas Al-Shaer]

The United Nations Committee Against Torture has found credible evidence that Israel is operating a “de facto State policy of organised and widespread torture and ill-treatment,” warning that such practices may constitute war crimes, crimes against humanity, and may meet the legal criteria for genocide.

In its concluding observations on Israel’s sixth periodic review, the Committee said it was “deeply concerned” about multiple and serious allegations of torture and ill-treatment of Palestinians deprived of liberty, including children. It further described the situation as having “gravely intensified” since 7 October 2023.

The UN report lists detailed allegations of abuse, based on testimonies from rights groups, medical experts, and detainees themselves. These include beatings with batons and rifle butts, kicks to the head and genitals, electrocution, including of the genitals and anus, waterboarding, prolonged stress positions, sexual violence including rape, molestation, forced nudity and sexual threats, the use of attack dogs, exposure to extreme cold or heat, including use of boiling water. Victims reported being urinated on, forced to wear nappies, or made to act like animals. Many were shackled at all times, blindfolded, and fed through a straw.

“The Committee expresses its deep concern over allegations of repeated severe beatings, dog attacks, electrocution, waterboarding, use of prolonged stress positions, sexual violence, threats against detainees and their family members, insults to personal dignity and humiliation such as being made to act like animals or being urinated on, systematic denial of medical care, excessive use of restraints, in some cases resulting in amputation, the performance of surgeries without anaesthetic, exposure to extreme cold or heat, including boiling water” said the UN.

On its list of grave violations committed by Israel the Committee included, “denial of adequate nutrition and water, deprivation of clothing, sleep and access to hygiene facilities and products, including feminine hygiene products, deprivation of light or darkness, use of loud music and noises, denial of the right to freely practice ones religion, and the forcible use of hallucinogenic medication, in a discriminatory manner, against Palestinians, and for purposes including the extraction of information or confessions and as a means of exacting punishment, including collective punishment.”

The Committee expressed alarm at Israel’s use of the Unlawful Combatants Law to detain children, the elderly, and pregnant women without charge. It noted that many detainees were held in solitary confinement, denied access to family, legal counsel, education, or even basic hygiene, food, and water.

It further reported that 75 Palestinian detainees have died in Israeli custody since 7 October 2023, many showing signs of starvation, untreated wounds, dehydration, and signs of torture. Families were often not informed, constituting enforced disappearance under international law. Despite these deaths, the Committee noted that no Israeli official has been held accountable.

The Committee concluded that acts of torture and ill-treatment committed against Palestinians deprived of liberty could qualify as war crimes and crimes against humanity. It referenced the UN Commission of Inquiry’s prior findings that such acts may form part of the actus reus of genocide—a Latin term referring to the “guilty act” or the physical component of a criminal offence, in this case the deliberate infliction of harm on a protected group.

The Committee called on Israel to immediately cease the use of torture and ill-treatment, grant unrestricted access to all detention facilities to independent monitors, establish an independent commission of inquiry, investigate and prosecute all responsible officials, including military and intelligence officers, and repeal or amend laws enabling arbitrary detention and ensure protection of vulnerable detainees, especially children.
