B’Tselem report alleges systematic torture, starvation, and deaths in Israeli detention centres

The Israeli human rights organisation B’Tselem released a report on Tuesday documenting widespread and systematic abuses against Palestinians held in Israeli detention centres, including torture, starvation, sexual violence, denial of medical care, and deaths in custody.

According to the report, Israeli detention facilities operate as a coordinated network of what B’Tselem characterised as “torture camps,” where detainees are subjected to severe physical and psychological abuse under inhumane conditions. Testimonies collected by the organisation describe prolonged beatings, humiliation, extreme overcrowding, deliberate starvation, medical neglect, and, in some cases, sexual violence. Several former detainees reported experiencing such abuses personally or witnessing them being inflicted on others.

B’Tselem said it has documented at least 84 cases of Palestinians who died in Israeli custody since October 2023, including one minor. Of those who died, 50 were from the Gaza Strip, 31 from the occupied West Bank, and three were Palestinian citizens of Israel. The organisation added that, as of January 2025, Israeli authorities were still withholding the bodies of 80 of the deceased prisoners and refusing to return them to their families.

The report noted that these figures represent only cases that could be independently verified, warning that the actual number of deaths in detention may be higher.

Commenting on the findings, B’Tselem Executive Director Yuli Novak said Israeli detention centres had become part of a “planned and widespread attack” against Palestinian society. She argued that the abuse of detainees forms part of a broader policy aimed at dismantling Palestinian social and political life, linking the detention practices to the ongoing war in Gaza and what she described as ethnic cleansing in the West Bank.

Novak criticised the international community for what she called continued inaction, saying that the absence of accountability for Israel has contributed to the persistence of torture, repression, and other grave violations against Palestinians.

Nurses share harrowing accounts of a ‘broken system’

NURSES have shared harrowing accounts of a “broken system” of corridor care that “tortures” patients, with people left in chairs for days and one patient choking to death, unnoticed.

Publishing new findings on the practice today, the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) warned that collapsing NHS care standards are pushing staff morale “past the point of no return.” 

The report comes a year after a previous damning investigation by the union into corridor care.

RCN contacted thousands of nurses who contributed to last year’s report to assess whether corridor care was still being used and its impact.

Responses from 436 nurses showed the practice remains widespread.

Nurses described having to hold up white sheets to protect patient dignity while performing intimate procedures. 

At one hospital, an elderly patient was forced to eat in a corridor beside someone who was vomiting.

A nurse working in the NHS in south-west England said patients felt “deeply embarrassed, objectified, judged, uncared for” and like “a burden on a broken system.”

They are often “wishing they had never bothered to come in and would rather have taken the risk of dying at home than go through the torture,” the nurse said. 

“Because that’s what we subject them to, a type of torture.”

Ahead of Saturday’s one-year anniversary of Israel abducting Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya from the Gaza hospital he ran, advocates demanded the release the scores of health workers still imprisoned by Israeli occupation forces.

“One year ago, Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya was abducted by the Israeli military along with dozens of other medical staff during a horrific raid on the Kamal Adwan Hospital in Gaza,” Dr. Yipeng Ge, a member of Doctors Against Genocide, said Friday on social media. “Free Hussam Abu Safiya. Free them all.”

Abu Safiya, the 52-year-old director of Kamal Adwan Hospital, was seized on December 27, 2024 as Israel Defense Forces (IDF) troops continued their yearlong siege and raids on the facility in Beit Lahia, northern Gaza. The IDF claimed without evidence that Kamal Adwan—the last major functioning hospital in northern Gaza at the time—was a Hamas command center.

During a previous Israeli attack on Kamal Adwan, Abu Safiya’s 15-year-old son was killed in a drone strike. Abu Safiya was seriously wounded in a separate drone attack that left six pieces of shrapnel in his leg.

After his capture, Abu Safiya was first jailed at the notorious Sde Teiman prison in Israel’s Negev Desert—where dozens of detainees have died and where torture, rape, and other abuses have been reported—and then Ofer Prison in the illegally occupied West Bank.

Abu Safiya said he has endured torture by his captors—including beatings with batons and electric shocks—and suffered severe weight loss, broken ribs, and other injuries, for which he was allegedly denied adequate medical care.

Israeli authorities deny these accusations. However, there have been many documented and otherwise credible reports of health and medical workers being tortured by Israeli forces—sometimes fatally, as in the case of Dr. Adnan al-Bursh, who headed the orthopedic department at al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City.

According to Francesca Albanese, the United Nations special rapporteur on the occupied Palestinian territories, al-Bursh was “likely raped to death,” a fate allegedly suffered by multiple Palestinians imprisoned by Israel.

Abu Safiya remains in Israeli custody, despite having not been charged with any crimes. Israeli courts have extended his detention multiple times under so-called “unlawful combatant” legal provisions.

In January, Abu Safiya’s mother died of a heart attack that MedGlobal, the Illinois-based nonprofit for which Abu Safiya worked as lead Gaza physician, attributed to “severe sadness” over her son’s plight.

According to United Nations agencies and other experts, Israeli forces have destroyed or damaged nearly all of Gaza’s hospitals in hundreds of attacks since the Hamas-led October 7, 2023 attack on Israel. More than 1,500 Palestinian health workers have been killed.

Last year, an independent United Nations commission found that “Israel has perpetrated a concerted policy to destroy Gaza’s healthcare system as part of a broader assault on Gaza, committing war crimes and the crime against humanity of extermination with relentless and deliberate attacks on medical personnel and facilities.”

Israel is currently facing an ongoing genocide case filed by South Africa at the International Court of Justice. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant are wanted by the International Criminal Court for alleged crimes against humanity and war crimes including murder and forced starvation.

Albina Abu Safiya, the imprisoned doctor’s wife, pleaded last week: “Save my husband before it is too late. His only ‘crime’ was saving the wounded and tending to the wounds of children.”

Hamas warns of “slow-motion execution” of its leading prisoners in Israeli jails

Hamas has warned of a “slow-motion execution” being carried out on its senior Palestinian prisoners in Israeli occupation jails.

In a press statement received by Quds Press on Tuesday, senior Hamas leader Abdulrahman Shedeed said that the treatment of their brave prisoners — including torture, ill-treatment and the denial of even the most basic rights — is a stain on humanity and a disgrace for every self-proclaimed human-rights defender.

Shedeed specifically condemned the repeated, brutal beatings and deliberate ill-treatment of the imprisoned leader Abdullah al-Barghouti in Gilboa prison, calling it a politically directed attempt at slow execution. He argued that this is a direct echo of threats made by extremist far-right figure Ben Gvir, who has spoken of executing prisoners and targeting their leaders.

He also raised alarm over al-Barghouti’s health and that of other prisoners, accusing the Israeli prison authorities of systemic medical neglect and denying prisoners access to treatment. According to Shedeed, this reflects a calculated campaign to break the will of the prison movement and undermine its resilience.

Rights group warns of life-threatening abuse against Palestinian detainee in Israel

The Prisoners’ Media Office warned Monday that prominent Palestinian detainee Abdullah Barghouti, 53, is being subjected to severe and prolonged physical and psychological torture inside Israel’s Gilboa Prison, describing his treatment as a form of “slow execution.”

In a press statement, the office — affiliated with Hamas — said Barghouti has endured “systematic and repeated assaults” for more than 25 months. According to the statement, prison guards raid his cell day and night, often accompanied by dogs, announcing they “missed beating him” before restraining him and assaulting him with batons. The office reported that these attacks cause bleeding and deep wounds that prisoners are forced to treat using torn clothing and minimal cleaning supplies.

Barghouti, who is serving 67 life sentences, is reportedly suffering from untreated fractures in his right elbow and hand that have persisted for three months. He also has a broken finger, fractures in two ribs on the right side of his chest, torn tendons, and has lost approximately 35 kilograms due to the “starvation” policy pursued by the prison administration.

The Office added that Barghouti has been subjected to electric shocks and deliberately doused with water during torture sessions. He has also been placed in a room infested with scabies, resulting in widespread boils across his body. The statement says he now has severe difficulty moving his hands, with one nearly paralyzed, while prison authorities continue to deny him medical care or even basic pain relief. Human rights organizations are also being prevented from contacting him.

The office said Barghouti’s case reflects an “open war” against leaders of the Palestinian prisoners’ movement, adding that violations have reached the level of “attempted deliberate killing.” It called on international human rights and humanitarian bodies to intervene urgently to stop the torture, ensure Barghouti receives medical treatment, and hold those responsible accountable.
