“There are straight lines between what Israel has attempted to do… in Gaza, to completely decimate and collapse the systems that existed there, to what we are seeing in Iran,” said one expert.

US and Israeli missiles have hit a school in Iran for the fourth time in six days, according to videos shared on social media by a spokesperson for the Iranian Foreign Ministry on Friday.

Spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei said that the Shahid Hamedani School, an elementary school in Niloufar Square, Tehran, had been “targeted by the American/Israeli aggressors.”

He posted a video showing the school filled with dozens of young students prior to the attack, followed by scenes of the school in ruins, with several empty classrooms filled with rubble.

Baquaei said it showed “how the United States administration is helping the people of Iran.” He did not include any information about the number of casualties or the circumstances of the attack.

According to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), at least 192 children have been killed across the Middle East since the US and Israel launched a regime change war this past Saturday.

Most of them were girls ages 7-12 who were killed on Saturday during an attack at a girls’ school in the southern Iranian town of Minab.

At least 175 people were reported to have been killed in the attack, which unnamed officials have said was “likely” carried out by the United States, according to Reuters. HuffPost reported that Pentagon officials have briefed Congress that the US “was most likely responsible.”

Eyewitnesses and relatives of the victims have told Middle East Eye that the attack was a “double-tap” strike in which survivors and first responders were targeted following the initial bombing. An Al Jazeera investigation has concluded that the attack was likely “deliberate.”

Iranian media have also published CCTV video of a separate strike on the same day, in which a missile landed next to a boys’ school in Qazvin, resulting in scenes of terrified students and teachers running for their lives.

On Thursday, two other schools in the town of Parand, southwest of Tehran, were hit by missiles fired by the US and Israel, according to Iranian state media. The Fars News Agency shared photos of a classroom filled with debris. So far, no casualties from the attack have been reported.

US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has said that as it wages its war in Iran, the US is not abiding by “stupid rules of engagement,” and has boasted of raining down “death and destruction from the sky all day long.”

According to data analyzed by the Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), part of a US-based human rights monitor for Iran, at least 1,168 civilians have been killed by US-Israeli attacks since Saturday. The Iranian government on Friday put the death toll at 1,332 people.

More than 3,643 civilian sites have been damaged in attacks attributed to the US and Israel, according to figures released by the Iranian Red Crescent Society—among them have been 3,090 homes, 528 commercial centres, 13 medical facilities and nine Red Crescent centres.

Amjad Iraqi, a senior analyst at the International Crisis Group, told Al Jazeera that these routine attacks on civilian infrastructure increasingly resemble those carried out by Israel during its more than two-years of genocide in Gaza.

“There are straight lines between what Israel has attempted to do… in Gaza, to completely decimate and collapse the systems that existed there,” Iraqi said, “to what we are seeing in Iran, on a much more massive and dangerous scale, to bring down the Islamic Republic and to cause as much devastation as possible.”

Morning Star Editorial: Keep British bases out of Trump’s reckless war

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer speaks to soldiers at the RAF base in Akrotiri, Cyprus, during his three-day trip to the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Cyprus, December 10, 2024

JEREMY CORBYN’S Bill demanding parliamentary oversight of the use of British bases for foreign countries’ wars is urgent and necessary.

Our craven Prime Minister has already given the United States permission to use British bases in the Middle East for its war of aggression against Iran.

Reversing that is essential to keep Britain out of a war we did not choose and which most British people oppose. It is also the most immediate practical step we can take to limit the escalation of the war we are already seeing across the Middle East.

Donald Trump was emboldened to start war with Iran because no US ally was prepared to stand up to his illegal aggression against Venezuela at the start of the year.

Having kidnapped the leader of one country, he has now killed the leader of another; still our government won’t acknowledge that the Trump White House is the biggest threat to peace and stability worldwide.

War crimes of the worst sort are normalised by the refusal to hold perpetrators to account. Having watched his allies make excuse after excuse for the mass murder he has inflicted on Gaza, Israel’s Benjamin Netanyahu fears no retaliation for incinerating 150 schoolgirls in Iran.

This impunity is dangerous: it leads the US and Israel to conclude they can do what they like. That means more atrocities and more wars.

Turning our bases into targets by allowing the US to use them to strike Iran increases the risk the war will spread.

And escalation is inherent in this war, started without defined aims or an exit strategy.

So poorly planned, in fact, that Trump himself admits the US didn’t make arrangements to evacuate its embassies in the region because “it happened very quickly” — a poor excuse in a conflict you started yourself. US Senator Elizabeth Warren, after a classified briefing, is blunt: “The Trump administration has no plan in Iran.”

US and Israel bomb Iran in unprovoked act of war

People watch as smoke rises on the skyline after an explosion in Tehran, Iran, this morning

THE United States and Israel bombed Iran this morning in an unprovoked act of war.

An emergency demonstration has been called outside Downing Street for 3.30pm today to oppose war on Iran, which could escalate into regional or even world war.

Iranian media reported strikes nationwide, and smoke could be seen rising from the capital Tehran. US President Donald Trump announced the start of “major combat operations” and called for regime change in the country, urging Iranians to rise up in collaboration with the attackers.

A huge US armada has built up in the Middle East in recent weeks, larger than that assembled in the Caribbean before the US bombed Venezuela and kidnapped its president last month. Mr Trump suggested the war could be a bloody one, anticipating US casualties and saying “that often happens in war.”

Talks had been ongoing in Geneva over US insistence that Iran abandon uranium enrichment for its civil nuclear power programme, as Washington claims Iran is seeking a nuclear weapon, something it has always denied.

Mr Trump unilaterally tore up the previous agreement on Iranian nuclear power (the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, signed in 2015) in 2018, and broke up negotiations on the issue last year by joining an unprovoked Israeli bombing spree as they were under way.

This year’s talks may also have been undertaken in bad faith by the United States, with an Israeli official briefing Reuters that the attacks had been planned for months and the launch date decided weeks ago.

Israel reported yesterday morning that retaliatory Iranian missiles had already begun to hit the country.

Tens of thousands of US troops — and about 4,000 British soldiers — are stationed on bases in the Middle East, which could be targeted by Iran in retaliation.

It is unclear if British bases have been used in any capacity by the US in the attacks. Reports in recent weeks have suggested British authorities objected to involvement in any attack, though Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has also indicated he would be prepared to join US aggression against Iran.

Former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said: “The attacks on Iran by Israel and the United States are illegal, unprovoked and unjustifiable.

“Peace and diplomacy was possible. Instead, Israel and the United States chose war.

“This is the behaviour of rogue states — and they have jeopardised the safety of humankind around the world with this catastrophic act of aggression.

IRAN announced the temporary closure of the Strait of Hormuz today for live fire military drills as its negotiators held another round of indirect talks with the United States in Geneva over its nuclear programme.

It was the first time that Tehran has announced the closure of the key international waterway, through which 20 per cent of the world’s oil passes, since the US began threatening Iran and rushing military assets to the region.

Iran said its Revolutionary Guard had started a drill early on Monday in the Strait of Hormuz, the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman — all crucial international shipping routes.

It was the second time in recent weeks that Iran has held a live fire exercise in the Strait of Hormuz.

As the talks began, Iranian state media announced that the country’s military had fired missiles toward the strait and would close it for several hours for “safety and maritime concerns.”

The Tasnim news agency, which is close to the paramilitary Revolutionary Guard, said missiles launched inside Iran and along its coast had struck their targets in the strait.

Immigrants Delivered $14.5 Trillion Surplus to US Economy Over Last 30 Years: Report

Spread the love

Original article by Jon Queally republished from Common Dreams under Creative Commons (CC BY-NC-ND 3.0).

The analysis by the Cato Institute shows in detail why it’s a lie to believe that immigrants are “sucking us dry,” a familiar argument by anti-immigrant nativists like Stephen Miller. (Image: Keith Negley/via Cato Institute report art)

A groundbreaking new report released Tuesday details how immigrants in the United States over the last three decades have contributed a massive surplus to the nation’s economy, resulting in a total of more than $14 trillion over that period due to the fact that immigrant families generate significantly more benefits to fiscal health than they take away in the form of benefits received or downside costs.

The white paper by the libertarian free-marketeers at the Cato Institute, not a left-leaning outfit, builds on an existing model developed by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) to create a first-of-its kind analyses to determine “how immigrants, both legal and illegal, and their children affect government budgets” in a cumulative manner.

Trump Inflation Hit Average US Family With $1,625 in Higher Costs Last Year: Report

US Military Helping Trump to Build Massive Network of ‘Concentration Camps,’ Navy Contract Reveals

Looking at 30 years of data, the 95-page report—titled “Immigrants’ Recent Effects on Government Budgets: 1994-2023”—discovered that immigrants overall “generated a fiscal surplus of about $14.5 trillion” over those years. In part, the NASEM-Cato model shows:

  • Every year from 1994 to 2023, immigrants have paid more in taxes than they received in benefits.
  • Immigrants generated nearly $10.6 trillion more in federal, state, and local taxes than they induced in total government spending.
  • Accounting for savings on interest payments on the national debt, immigrants saved $14.5 trillion in debt over this 30-year period.
  • Immigrants cut US budget deficits by about a third from 1994 to 2023, and fiscal savings grew to $878 billion in 2023.

The paper concludes that “the average immigrant is much less costly than the average US-born American, and that immigrants impose lower costs per person on old-age benefit, education, and public safety programs.”

The findings arrive with the US embroiled in a heated debate about immigration enforcement as President Donald Trump—backed by far-right xenophobes in his inner orbit, including White House deputy chief of staff for policy Stephen Miller and Department of Homeland Security Kristi Noem—has unleashed violent federal agents into communities nationwide to sweep up undocumented workers and their family members.

In a video produced for social media, David J. Bier, director of Immigration Studies at Cato and one of the report’s co-authors, said the analysis shows in detail why it’s a lie to believe that immigrants are “sucking us dry,” a familiar argument by anti-immigrant “nativists” like Miller.

In summary, the report notes that immigrants produce a net fiscal benefit in the US economy because:

  1. The United States collected more in taxes from the average person than it spent on benefits (excluding pure public goods).
  2. Immigrants paid higher-than-average taxes because their higher-than-average employment rate led to higher-than-average incomes.
  3. Immigrants cost the government less than average because they did not add to the cost of the government’s largest expenditure (pure public goods) and received lower-than-average benefits for other major items, particularly old-age benefits and education.

As shown in the figure below, the difference between taxes paid by immigrants and the public benefits they receive “has grown from $158 billion to $572 billion in real terms since 1994.” Just to look at 2023, working immigrants that year paid $1.3 trillion in taxes yet received only $761 billion in benefits.

CATO analyses: immigration taxes versus benefits

This trend, despite endless cries from far-right pundits and xenophobic lawmakers that immigrants are a drain on public coffers, has held steady for decades—with no sign of it ending in the future.

“For decades, nativists have sold America this narrative that immigrant welfare is behind our deficits and debt,” said Bier. “This figure shows how absurd that is.”

The report argues that “rather than treating [immigrants—both documented and undocumented] as the cause of America’s fiscal struggles, we should consider immigrants part of the solution.”

Mark D. Levine, comptroller of New York City, was among the public officials pointing to the report as timely evidence that the Trump-Miller-Noem narrative about immigration is built on a foundation of falsehoods.

“MAGA’s claim that immigrants are a drain on government budgets? It’s a lie,” said Levine.
