CONTROVERSIAL North Sea oil and gas plans “won’t take a penny off our bills” and instead increase “profits of a few,” campaigners warned as a public consultation opened into projects today.

Fossil fuel firm Adura claimed the Rosebank oil field and Jackdaw development would “deliver the greatest benefit for the UK.”

But campaigners and researchers with Uplift, which won the legal case against Rosebank in 2025, warned Brits not to fall for the plans which only serve to increase profits for energy firms.

Its executive director Tessa Khan said: “Rosebank won’t take a penny off our bills or meaningfully boost UK energy supplies — it’s overwhelmingly oil for export.

“But burning its oil would produce emissions equal to 70 per cent of the UK’s annual total, making it utterly incompatible with safe climate limits.

“Rosebank has nothing to do with the UK’s energy security and everything to do with increasing the profits of a few, already obscenely wealthy, oil companies.”

BP sees ‘exceptional’ results as a result of war-driven oil market shock

The price of oil has surged as a result of the US-Israel war on Iran, up 60 per cent since it started on February 28.

BP said Brent crude prices averaged $81.13 (£60) a barrel over the first quarter as a whole, up from $63.73 (£47) a barrel in the previous three months.

The oil giant said that for every dollar increase in the price per barrel of oil results in a $340 million (£250m) rise in pre-tax operating profits.

Uplift deputy director Robert Palmer told the Star: “While millions of people are worrying over their energy bills, oil companies like BP are raking in billions of profits.

“It’s clear that the UK’s dependence on fossil fuels is making all of us poorer – all except for the oil and gas bosses and their shareholders who once again will cash in at our expense.

“The only way to insulate ourselves from energy shocks and protect the climate is to ramp up on renewables, and upgrade homes with solar power, batteries and heat pumps. We also need to support those who need it most with financial help.”

dizzy: It’s worth reflecting on whether the overarching intention is to inflate oil prices: Trump is hugely financially supported by the oil companies of course, they financed his second successful election campaign. The oil price is kept high and the Trump administration make some extremely dubious and unsubstantiated announcements to prevent it getting much above a hundred dollars a barrel. There’s the lies that Trump & Co are imposing a blockade on Iran or that there are negotiations going to happen soon for example. Unsubstantiated and extremely likely untrue but it appears adequate for oil traders to play along.

New North Sea drilling would barely reduce UK gas imports at all, data shows

Exclusive: research finds Jackdaw field would provide only about 2% of current demand, and Rosebank only 1%

Opening major new fields in the North Sea would make almost no difference to the UK’s reliance on gas imports, research has shown.

The Jackdaw field, one of the largest unexploited gasfields in the North Sea, would displace only 2% of the UK’s current imports of gas, which would leave the UK still almost entirely dependent on supplies from Norway and a few other sources.

The Rosebank field, also in Scottish waters but mainly containing oil, would displace only about 1% of the UK’s gas imports.

Tessa Khan, executive director of Uplift, the campaign group, which compiled the data from public sources, said: “New fields like Jackdaw and Rosebank would do vanishingly little to boost UK gas production. Even in the most optimistic scenario, and assuming none of its gas is exported, Jackdaw would provide just 2% of UK demand over its nine- to 12-year lifetime.”

It has already been shown, by authorities including the UK Energy Research Centre, that new drilling would not reduce oil and gas prices, or improve the UK’s energy security. It is also unlikely to produce durable jobs or major new tax revenues, as 90% of the UK’s North Sea oil and gas has already been burned, putting the industry in steep and irrecoverable decline. Companies are also demanding tax breaks to tap the new fields, which are harder to access than existing supplies.

UK Government urged to ‘do the right thing’ and reject Rosebank development

Equinor, which owns the majority of the oil field, stressed it was committed to advancing the ‘Rosebank project’

Climate campaigners have challenged the UK Government to “do the right thing” and turn down plans for drilling in the Rosebank oil field.

The group Uplift – which wants to see a “rapid and fair transition away from oil and gas production in the UK” – said whether the green light is granted for the development would be the “defining test of this Government’s credibility on climate change”.

It came as it was confirmed Equinor, which owns an 80% majority stake in the oil field, confirmed it has submitted a scope 3 assessment – setting out all associated greenhouse gas emissions for the project, in compliance with new guidelines from UK authorities.

And the company said it is “fully committed” to working with all relevant bodies to “advance the Rosebank project”.

The Rosebank field, which is located some 80 miles west of Shetland, is the UK’s largest untapped oil field and is estimated to contain up to 300 million barrels of oil.

Robin Wells, director of Fossil Free London, said: “In the face of this decision on the biggest undeveloped oil field in the North Sea, we must be crystal clear. Rosebank will be the defining test of this Government’s climate promise.”

Household energy debt soars to £4.43 billion

HOUSEHOLD energy debt has soared to £4.43 billion, leaving hundreds of thousands trapped in arrears, new figures revealed today.

Figures from Ofgem show that energy debt has more than tripled since the end of 2020, when the figure stood at £1.45bn.

The regulator reported that there are currently 1,133,683 electricity customers and 926,545 gas customers in debt without any repayment arrangement in place.

The debt is leaving households facing up to an extra £145 a year on their bills to cover the collective shortfall.

End Fuel Poverty Coalition co-ordinator Simon Francis said: “Energy debt is now driving people into dangerous financial positions as we approach the fifth winter of the energy bills crisis.

A new analysis by think tank Common Wealth shows that 24 per cent of the average energy bill went towards pre-tax profits by the energy industry.

Robert Palmer, deputy director of Uplift, said: “Yet again while shareholders are celebrating rising prices and huge profits, people are facing stark choices of how to ration their energy.

“Only by supporting struggling households now, improving energy efficiency and getting us off expensive gas through homegrown renewable energy will ministers be able to get a grip on the situation.”
