ANDY BURNHAM’S popularity is on the slide with the public, according to two different opinion polls.

In the week that Makerfield is poised to send the Manchester Mayor back to the Commons with a platform to challenge Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer for the premiership, Mr Burnham’s previously positive ratings have turned sour.

YouGov, which previously made him the only politician in the country with a net favourability rating, now has him down 11 per cent, with 30 per cent of the public liking him against 41 per cent negative.

An Ipsos poll had similar findings, although both surveys still make Mr Burnham less unpopular than any other politician and notably more popular than potential leadership rival Wes Streeting.

Since starting his by-election campaign in Makerfield, which votes on Thursday, Mr Burnham has flip-flopped on a range of policy issues, from the bond market to justice for the Waspi women.

Leading figures on the Labour left are also privately expressing doubts and warning that, if Mr Burnham does ascend to Downing Street, continuing pressure will be needed to ensure he steers a different course than Sir Keir.

POLICE forces are not protecting Jews when they target protesters who legitimately oppose Israel’s war crimes, campaigners have warned.

Jewish Voice for Liberation (JVL) has hit out at the Met and Greater Manchester police chiefs, who have said protesters who chant “globalise the intifada” will be arrested.

Defending the peace marches seen across Britain since the start of Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza, JVL said the chant is not one regularly heard at the mass London demonstrations.

The group said: “If it is used as a taunt to individuals or groups of Jews it may amount to harassment, but otherwise it should be accepted as what it literally means — a call to make resistance to Israeli crimes global.”

But it said the Jewish Bloc, which proudly proclaims its Jewish identity, has always been prepared to challenge any anti-semitism it has encountered on the demonstrations.

The group insisted that it has very rarely, if ever, encountered anything it needs to respond to.

JVL also took issue with the conflation of pro-Palestine activism and the rise of anti-semitic hate crimes, claiming “legitimate peaceful protest” should not be confused with what is “correctly illegal activity.”

“It unfairly casts doubt on the intent of those, including the substantial Jewish Bloc, expressing their horror at the continuing genocide in Gaza and the complicity of our government in it,” the group added.

Left MPs Jeremy Corbyn, Zarah Sultana and John McDonnell are doing the right thing in highlighting the case of the young pro-Palestinian prisoners on hunger strike in British jails.

Seven prisoners associated with solidarity actions for Palestine have now been on hunger strike for several weeks. They are being locked up on remand, with their trial likely 18 months away. This is the largest co-ordinated political hunger strike since the H-Blocks in 1981.

This is the grossest travesty of justice. The whole labour movement should be demanding that these young people, who are not charged with any violence against persons, should be freed.

Guilty of nothing under the law, they should be given bail immediately. Their continued detention on remand is an act of state vindictiveness.

Should any of them come to lasting harm, it will be on the account of Justice Secretary David Lammy as well as the Prime Minister. They will not be forgiven.

Failure to air footage of Israeli soldiers executing unarmed Palestinians shows the corporation’s true bias

When it was revealed in November 2025 that a BBC programme edited a section of Donald Trump’s speech on 6 January 2021 to reinforce the idea that the freshly deposed president was calling on his supporters to take violent action at the US Capitol, both the director general and head of news resigned and the corporation immediately apologised for its behaviour.

Shortly after this, the BBC was guilty of a far less dramatic, but equally revealing dodgy edit that will lead to no resignations and no apology because, far from undermining the BBC’s editorial values, it’s an everyday expression of the corporation’s deployment of “due impartiality” when it comes to reporting Israeli violence.

On 27 November, Israeli forces executed two unarmed Palestinian men in Jenin in the occupied West Bank, an event captured in full on CCTV and replayed on headlines across the globe. 

The BBC reported the story across all its news platforms, including on its main TV news bulletin that night. Yet the BBC cut away just before the soldiers opened fire. “We’re going to lose the pictures at this moment,” reporter Jon Donnison said on air.

The BBC didn’t “lose the pictures”; it decided deliberately not to show them. Its own guidelines say: “In the immediate aftermath of an event involving death, suffering or distress, the use of more graphic material may be justified to provide a reasonable account of the full horror.”

Moreover, Donnison went out of his way to qualify the actions of the soldiers saying that the men “appear to be surrendering” and then “appear” to be ordered back into a building from where “Israeli soldiers appear to open fire and shoot them dead at point-blank range”.

Other news outlets, however, transmitted pictures of the whole assassination and even inside Israel itself, Haaretz used far more direct language in its reporting: “Israeli Border Police officers were filmed on Thursday, fatally shooting two Palestinians in the West Bank city of Jenin after they had surrendered”. Neither the word “appear”, nor any conditional phrases are used anywhere in the story.
