Hundreds of former EU and member state ministers, ambassadors and senior officials have called on the European Union to take “robust and sustained action” to increase pressure on Israel and end “unremitting violations of international law” in Gaza, the West Bank and East Jerusalem, Anadolu reports.

In a joint statement released Monday and co-signed by 404 former officials, the group urged the EU and its members to move beyond condemnatory statements and adopt concrete measures, including suspending the EU-Israel Association Agreement and halting all military support to Israel.

“A robust approach based on the EU’s founding values and principles will be essential to reestablish the Union’s reputation as a force for peace and good in our time,” the statement said.

The signatories warned that the humanitarian and security situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate despite the launch of an international peace initiative, pointing to ongoing Israeli military operations, restrictions on humanitarian aid, and the targeting of civilians and aid workers.

According to the statement, around 500 Palestinians, including more than 100 children, have been killed in Gaza during the first phase of the ceasefire reached last October, bringing the total death toll since the start of Israel’s military campaign to over 71,000, the vast majority civilians.

The former officials also condemned Israel’s continued restrictions on humanitarian access, calling for the full and permanent opening of the Rafah border crossing and an end to what they described as the misuse of “dual-use” policies to block aid deliveries.

They strongly criticized Israel’s decision to deregister dozens of international NGOs operating in Gaza, warning that such measures undermine lifesaving assistance and violate UN humanitarian principles.

The statement also denounced Israel’s actions against the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), including the destruction of its West Bank field office in East Jerusalem, calling the campaign against the agency “a flagrant contempt” of recent International Court of Justice (ICJ) advisory opinions.

In the occupied West Bank, the signatories highlighted a sharp increase in Israeli settlement activity, noting that plans for more than 47,000 housing units were advanced in 2025—an 81% rise compared to the previous year—despite international rulings declaring settlements illegal.

Calling for accountability, the group urged the EU to desist from joining the recently announced “Board of Peace,” arguing that its composition and governance risk undermining the role of the UN and international law.

“It is high time for the EU and its member states to take robust and sustained action to reverse the disastrous situation currently afflicting the Palestinian people, notably in Gaza but also in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem,” Sven Kuhn von Burgsdorff, a retired EU official and former ambassador to the occupied Palestinian territory, told Anadolu.

“To increase pressure on Israel, alliances with like-minded partners in the OECD and the Global South, and notably in the Middle East, have to be built and strengthened,” he said, stressing the need to protect Palestinians’ “inalienable right to political self-determination and a life in peace, security and dignity.”

Israeli forces conducted a raid in the West Bank city of Hebron on Saturday, Jan. 31, utilizing heavy machinery to block streets, Anadolu reports.

The report said Israel has intensified attacks in the West Bank during two years of genocide in the Gaza Strip, with assaults continuing in the form of killings, destruction, displacement and settlement expansion.

According to Palestinian figures, Israeli forces and illegal settlers have killed at least 1,110 Palestinians in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and injured nearly 11,000 others since October 2023.

The International Court of Justice declared Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territory illegal in a landmark opinion in July 2024 and called for the evacuation of all settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

West Bank facing worst humanitarian crisis since 1967 amid Israeli operations in refugee camps: UN refugee agency

The occupied West Bank is experiencing its most severe humanitarian crisis since 1967, the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) warned Friday, citing large-scale displacement and extensive destruction in refugee camps amid Israeli military operations, Anadolu reports.

In a statement on the US social media company X, Philippe Lazzarini, head of UNRWA, said 33,000 people remain forcibly displaced from northern refugee camps one year after the launch of Israel’s “Iron Wall” operation.

“Israeli forces have been demolishing swathes of the camps, reducing the chances for these communities to recover,” he added.

Lazzarini said UNRWA teams “are assisting newly displaced Palestine refugees who have been pushed deeper into poverty and have no viable alternatives for healthcare, education and welfare.”

He stressed that the agency’s ability to continue operations depends on “continued political & financial support from member states.”

Since beginning its genocide in the Gaza Strip in October 2023, Israel has intensified its crimes to annex the West Bank, particularly through demolition, displacement of Palestinians and expansion of settlements, according to Palestinian authorities.

Israeli forces and illegal settlers have since killed at least 1,108 Palestinians in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and injured nearly 11,000, while it has detained 21,000.

Separately, illegal Israeli settlers vandalized a mosque Friday in the northern West Bank, the latest in a string of attacks on places of worship and Palestinian property.

The official Palestinian news agency, Wafa, cited local land defense coordinator Thaer Hanani, who said illegal settlers stormed the Beit al-Sheikh Mosque in the Khirbet Tana area, east of Nablus, smashing its contents and forcing worshippers to hold Friday prayers outdoors.

Hanani said illegal settlers also destroyed orchard fencing to allow cattle to graze, damaging Palestinian olive trees. He described the attack as part of repeated assaults on the mosque and worshippers to prevent residents from accessing Khirbet Tana after its population was forcibly expelled early last year.

According to Israel’s Peace Now, more than 500,000 illegal settlers live in the West Bank, in addition to over 250,000 in settlements built on occupied East Jerusalem land.

The UN considers Israeli settlements in occupied Palestinian territory illegal under international law and said they undermine the viability of a two-state solution.

Palestinian officials have repeatedly urged the international community to pressure Israel to halt settlement activity.

More than 12,000 Palestinian children are living in a state of “forced displacement” in the West Bank as a result of Israel’s ongoing military operation in the north of the occupied territory, the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) said Sunday, Anadolu reports.

Since Jan. 21, 2025, the Israeli army has been carrying out a military campaign in the northern West Bank, which began in the Jenin refugee camp and later expanded to the Nur Shams and Tulkarem camps.

Israeli forces have imposed a siege on the three camps, accompanied by widespread destruction of infrastructure, homes and shops, leading to the displacement of around 50,000 Palestinians, according to official figures.

“More than 12,000 children remain forcibly displaced in the occupied West Bank,” the UNRWA said in a statement on the US social media company X.

In response to the operation, UNRWA said it “launched an emergency education program for displaced children in February 2025.”

The refugee agency said it has provided education “through temporary learning spaces, online teaching, the distribution of self-learning materials, and psycho-social support” for affected students.

UNRWA noted that 48,000 children attend its schools across the occupied West Bank.

Israeli forces and illegal settlers have killed at least 1,105 Palestinians in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, injured nearly 11,000, and detained around 21,000 since October 2023, according to Palestinian figures.

In a landmark opinion last July, the International Court of Justice declared Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territory illegal and called for the evacuation of all settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

Israel to revoke permits of international aid groups operating in West Bank, Gaza

Israeli occupation authorities have notified more than ten international humanitarian organisations that their permits to operate in the occupied West Bank and the Gaza Strip will be revoked, according to local reports.

A correspondent said the organisations affected include Doctors Without Borders and other international aid groups that are among the most active in providing humanitarian assistance in Gaza.

According to the Israeli notice, the permits will be withdrawn from 1 January 2026, and the organisations have been instructed to cease all operations by 1 March 2026.

Israeli authorities said the decision was taken because the organisations allegedly failed to complete newly required registration procedures for humanitarian work.

However, a source within one of the affected organisations said the dispute stems from an Israeli requirement that aid groups submit lists of Palestinian employees for so-called “security vetting”. The source said some organisations complied with the demand, while others refused.

Israeli authorities have claimed that some staff members working for the organisations are involved in what they described as “terrorist activity”. The source rejected the accusations, saying they are being used as a pretext to obstruct and restrict humanitarian work.

The decision is expected to result in the suspension of humanitarian operations by the affected organisations, the dismissal of hundreds of employees, and a further weakening of efforts to address the catastrophic humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip.

Aid groups have repeatedly warned that any reduction in humanitarian presence would have severe consequences for civilians in Gaza, where basic services and lifesaving assistance already face extreme strain.
