UAE foreign minister holds 1st publicly announced call with Iranian counterpart since outbreak of war

In the first publicly announced contact between the two countries since the outbreak of the US-Israeli war against Iran, UAE Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan held a phone call with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Friday, Anadolu reports.

According to the UAE Foreign Ministry, the two officials reviewed “the latest regional developments” following the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the US and Iran aimed at ending the war that came into force on June 18.

Bin Zayed stressed “the importance of full compliance with the provisions of the agreement” and said “serious diplomacy and responsible dialogue” remain the preferred means of addressing regional and international crises.

The UAE is among the Gulf countries that came under Iranian attacks during the war launched by Israel and the US on Feb. 28, with Tehran saying its strikes targeted US bases and interests.​​​​​​​

Abdul-Malik al-Houthi, leader of Yemen’s Ansar Allah movement, warned on Thursday against what he described as Israeli efforts to establish a presence in Somaliland, saying the group would respond to any such move.

Speaking in a televised address, al-Houthi said Israel was seeking to expand its influence in the Gulf of Aden and the Bab al-Mandab Strait in an effort to strengthen its control over strategic shipping routes in the Red Sea.

He warned that Ansar Allah would not remain passive in the face of any Israeli presence in the region and affirmed the group’s readiness to confront it.

Al-Houthi also called on countries bordering the Red Sea to adopt a unified position to safeguard regional security, sovereignty and strategic waterways.

Turning to regional developments, the Houthi leader congratulated Iran on what he described as its “victory” over Israel and the United States, saying the outcome served the interests of the so-called “axis of resistance.”

He reaffirmed the group’s support for the Palestinian cause and said coordination with members of the “axis of resistance” was continuing in response to what he described as Israeli escalation, particularly in the Gaza Strip.

Addressing the situation in Yemen, al-Houthi reiterated his group’s opposition to the continuing blockade and foreign intervention in the country.

He said Ansar Allah remained committed to what he described as the Yemeni people’s right to sovereignty and the recovery of national resources.

Concluding his address, al-Houthi urged his supporters to maintain unity, remain mobilised and prepare for what he described as the challenges facing Yemen and the wider region.

UK Doctors’ Union Drops Israel-Backed Definition of Antisemitism

The British Medical Association (BMA) has voted to drop the International Holocaust Remembrance Association (IHRA) definition of antisemitism over fears it had a “chilling” effect on free speech, including support for Palestine.

The IHRA definition regards certain criticisms of Israel – including that its existence is a racist endeavour – as antisemitic. In the UK, it has been widely adopted by the national government, policing and local authorities. 

The definition was officially adopted by Israel’s government in 2017. Doctors voted to drop it at the BMA’s annual meeting on Tuesday over fears that medics are being punished for their views on international politics.

Several doctors have faced suspension and disciplinary action over their support for Palestine. They include plastic surgeon Ghassan Abu-Sittah who was cleared of antisemitism allegations in January after writing a newspaper article for a Lebanese outlet and two posts on X that critics said showed support for Hamas.

Iran’s parliament speaker rejects US claim unfrozen assets will fund American farm goods

Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, who heads the country’s negotiation team, on Thursday rejected a US claim that Tehran’s unfrozen assets would be used to buy American agricultural products.

“America falsely claims our unfrozen assets will buy their agriculture,” Qalibaf wrote on US social media company X.

“The only crop we’re harvesting is what you planted: decades of mistrust,” he added. “It’s organic, abundant, and homegrown.”

Qalibaf also criticized Washington’s trade and political record, saying the US “only exports GMO soybeans, broken promises and trash talks.”

His remarks came after US President Donald Trump said Wednesday that initial financial relief for Tehran would involve about $500 million in American goods.

Trump said no cash would be provided directly to Tehran and that Washington would use controlled Iranian funds to pay American farmers for exports such as corn and wheat.

“Food is desperately needed in Iran, and we will be purchasing it for them exclusively from the United States,” Trump said.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told CNBC on Wednesday that the US would oversee the release of Iranian frozen funds in the Gulf under Trump’s Iran deal.

“Any money that the Iranians get first is going to be used for the benefit of the Iranian people. It is going to be Iranian frozen funds,” Bessent said.

Bessent said the initial money would likely be released from Qatar, adding that US Treasury officials would be in Doha to oversee how the money is allocated.

He said a “very large percent” of the funds would go to buying US foodstuffs and medicines, adding that Washington would be “recycling the money back into US products” under Treasury oversight in the Middle East.

The comments come amid ongoing debate over the implementation of the recent Iran-US understanding, which includes provisions on sanctions relief and the release of frozen Iranian assets.

The agreement, mediated by Pakistan, entered into force on June 18 after being electronically signed by Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Trump.
