Lebanese Red Cross President Antoine Zoghbi said the Israeli occupation forces have killed more than 100 paramedics and medical workers since the ceasefire took effect, condemning the continued targeting of emergency personnel.

In an interview with Cairo News Channel, Zoghbi said that since 14th April Israel has killed more than 3,080 people, including over 100 medical and ambulance workers.

He said rescue and medical teams now operate under extremely dangerous conditions, adding that there is “no real protection” for ambulances or medical personnel in either Gaza Strip or Lebanon.

“Our problem today is that we have become targets, as if we were combatants,” Zoghbi said, adding that Lebanese officials and humanitarian organisations continue raising the issue in international forums.

He described the attacks on medical personnel and facilities as “a crime against humanity”, noting that four hospitals are no longer operational and 16 others have been damaged or directly attacked.

Zoghbi also said more than 200 ambulances had been targeted during the same period.

He concluded that the figures reflect the scale of the humanitarian crisis, stressing that the casualties among civilians and medical workers had occurred within a relatively short timeframe despite the ceasefire agreement.

Milei’s approval collapses under corruption scandals and prolonged economic crisis

In addition to the economic crisis Argentina is facing, a series of corruption allegations has caused the Argentine president’s popularity to plummet to one of its lowest levels since he took office.

Following several scandals and problems during his administration, the popularity of Javier Milei’s libertarian government has plummeted. The British newspaper Financial Times published a poll showing that 63% of Argentines disapprove of the far-right leader’s performance.

Argentina is currently in the midst of a prolonged economic crisis that shows no signs of ending. The libertarian government had promised that reducing the deficit and slowing the depreciation of the Argentine peso against the dollar, along with a radical downsizing of the state, would lead to rapid economic improvement.

Yet, evidently, Milei’s orthodox neoliberal policies have plunged the Argentine market into further crisis. Consumption has dropped significantly due to inflationary pressures to which the government has not been able to resolve. In Argentina, one of the world’s leading producers of beef, people have begun eating donkey meat on a massive scale due to the high price of beef, a development that has caused consternation throughout the region.

Chief of staff scrutinized over luxury home renovations

Added to this crisis in everyday life are the corruption scandals that have tarnished Milei’s administration. Milei’s chief of staff, Manuel Adorni, has dominated the headlines of major media outlets, facing allegations of illicit enrichment.

In one of the many allegations, Matías Tabar, an Argentine contractor, told the federal prosecutor handling the case that Adorni had paid him nearly USD 250,000 to carry out renovations on a home located in an exclusive neighborhood west of Buenos Aires.

According to Tabar, the renovations reportedly included a luxury marble swimming pool featuring a waterfall, as well as work on floors, walls, and bathrooms. Adorni allegedly paid for the entire project in cash without providing a receipt in exchange, which has raised many questions, such as how Adorni came to have USD 250,000 to build a luxurious waterfall and pool, and why there is no tax document to support this.

Furthermore, the case filed against Adorni states that the property where the controversial waterfall was built was reportedly purchased by the official in 2024 for approximately USD 120,000.

Lavish trips and exorbitant expenses

Additionally, it has been reported that Adorni’s wife traveled to New York on the presidential plane on an alleged official mission, even though she is not a member of the cabinet. At the time, Adorni apologized for this incident: “It was a bad decision, a terrible decision. Even though it didn’t cost the government a single dollar, I didn’t realize the mistake, and for that I apologize.”

The judicial investigation currently being prepared is also reportedly taking into account a series of expenses that do not correspond to the salary of a chief of staff.

Adorni has denied all the allegations, while Milei has stated that he fully supports his chief of staff and is confident that the allegations are false. The president accompanied his chief of staff to Congress, where Adorni again denied the allegations in response to questions from senators.

Among them is Representative Marcela Pagano, who has called for the chief of staff’s arrest on charges of alleged illicit enrichment. Furthermore, Pagano alleged that Adorni attempted to influence contractor Tabar before he gave his statement, which is a crime. Adorni has also denied these accusations.

Scandals and economic turmoil deepen Milei’s popularity crisis

In addition to the accusations against Adorni, Milei has also faced criticisms due to his involvement in the Hondurasgate scandal. According to the leaked recordings, Milei contributed USD 350,000 to the plot to spring convicted drug trafficker and former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández from US detention and support his efforts to wage disinformation campaigns against the Left in the region.

Thus, Milei’s popularity is falling in the face of a reality where people do not have enough money to buy meat, while the chief of staff is accused of paying a quarter of a million dollars to build a luxury pool with a waterfall. These are two realities so starkly different that, if confirmed, they could anger even President Milei’s most ardent supporter.

Watchdog to examine whether Reform UK leader should have declared sum he received before entering parliament

Nigel Farage is facing a formal investigation by the parliamentary standards watchdog over a £5m gift from the crypto billionaire Christopher Harborne.

The Reform UK leader received the money weeks before announcing he would stand as a candidate in the 2024 general election.

Farage has said the gift, first revealed by the Guardian, was intended to cover his personal security costs and therefore did not need to be declared. However, other parties argue that the money from the Thailand-based businessman falls within rules requiring MPs to declare any potentially relevant gifts or donations received in the 12 months before entering parliament.

Daniel Greenbergh, the parliamentary commissioner for standards, is understood to have begun an investigation under rule 5 of the code of conduct obliging MPs to “fulfil conscientiously” requirements relating to their registration of interests.

It states that new MPs must register all their current financial interests, and any registrable benefits (other than earnings) received in the 12 months before their election. This must be done within one month of their election, and they must register any change in those registrable interests within 28 days.

If the investigation finds Farage committed a particularly serious breach of parliamentary declaration rules, he could be suspended from the Commons. A suspension of 10 days or more could trigger a recall petition, potentially forcing him to fight again for his Clacton seat.

Jeremy Corbyn: Starmer’s Resignation Is Not Enough

This government chose not to bring in wealth taxes, not to implement rent controls, not to make the kind of public investment in council-housing that is needed to tackle the housing crisis, and chose not to redistribute resources from those who wield it to those who need it. It chose to give a top political job to a man with an established relationship to a convicted sex offender — a man who just so happened to pride himself on his opposition to our mass movement for social justice and peace.

Rather than rewriting the rigged rules of corporate Britain, the government also chose to blame a different group of people for the problems in our society: migrants and refugees. It went after the rights of migrants who have contributed so much to this country and demonised human beings seeking asylum. It mimicked the politics of Reform UK and rolled out the red carpet for Nigel Farage.

There is perhaps one political decision that will leave the greatest stain of all. As Israel embarked on the mass murder of Palestinians in Gaza, this government could have defended international law and called for peace. Yet it chose to facilitate war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide. And it chose to launch a systematic assault on the civil liberties of those who protested against the government’s complicity (alongside its outrageous decision to erode jury trials, the cornerstone of our justice system). This government’s enduring legacy will be its complicity and participation in the greatest crime of our age. And we will never, ever forget.

These decisions are the root cause of the chaos that Starmer is now trying to temper — and unless these root causes are addressed, we will continue to lurch from one political crisis to the next. It’s not enough for Starmer to go. What needs booting out is the politics he represents: corporate greed, anti-migrant policies and endless war.

I haven’t heard anything from his main contenders about the need to end corporate greed, the need for rent controls, or the need for a mass redistribution of wealth and power. I certainly haven’t heard any calls for an investigation into British complicity in genocide — presumably because that investigation would implicate them as well.

Keir Starmer … managed to hide the real record beneath his rhetoric: child poverty, inequality and genocide. Those
are the government’s big decisions. And that is how this government will be remembered.
