Commercial vessel traffic through the Strait of Hormuz rose more than 50% from the previous week amid ongoing negotiations following a temporary deal between the US and Iran, Anadolu reports.

Negotiations between the two countries remain fragile despite the deal reached on June 14, which took effect on June 18.

Before the war broke out at the end of February, an average of 130 commercial vessels transited the Strait of Hormuz each day. Following a virtual standstill after joint US-Israeli strikes on Iran and Tehran’s subsequent retaliation, maritime traffic through the strategic waterway has begun to recover following the US-Iran deal.

Despite the recent increase, traffic through the strait remains around 70% below pre-war levels.

Industry representatives remain cautious about using the waterway because of the fragile state of US-Iran negotiations and continuing uncertainty.

According to data from analytics firm Kpler, 223 commercial vessels transited the Strait of Hormuz during the week of June 15-21, averaging 32 transits per day.

The lowest daily traffic was recorded on June 17 with 19 vessels, while the highest was 54 on June 22.

During the week of June 22-28, 343 commercial vessels passed through the strait, with the daily average rising to 49 vessels. The lowest daily total was 24 vessels on June 28, while the highest reached 76 on June 24.

June 24 recorded the heaviest traffic through the Strait of Hormuz since the war began on Feb. 28.

Compared with the previous week, traffic through the strait increased by nearly 54%, with tankers carrying crude oil and petroleum products—primarily from Iran, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Iraq and Kuwait—accounting for most transits.

At least 6 million barrels of crude oil transited the Strait of Hormuz on Monday, the data showed.

A significant share of vessels continued to use the route designated within Iranian territorial waters, with most of those transits carried out by shadow fleet and sanctioned vessels.

A senior Iranian lawmaker said Saturday that US strikes on Iran during talks exposed Washington’s lack of commitment to diplomacy and ceasefire understandings, Anadolu reports.

Ibrahim Azizi, the head of parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, said the US “once again attacked Iran in the middle of negotiations.”

“The failed US president has shown he has no commitment to the principles of negotiation or a ceasefire,” said Azizi.

He said the “reckless violation” of the ceasefire would, “as always, lead to retreat and regret” for the US.

“The blame game does not work anymore,” he added.

His remarks came hours after Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said its naval forces targeted US military positions across the region in response to American strikes on the country’s south.

The US military’s Central Command (CENTCOM) said late Friday that American forces struck an Iranian missile, drone and radar sites after accusing Tehran of being behind an attack on a commercial vessel crossing the Strait of Hormuz.

The US carried out strikes inside Iran in response to an attack on a commercial ship transiting the Strait of Hormuz, the US’ military Central Command (CENTCOM) said Friday, Anadolu reports.

It said a US aircraft struck Iranian missile and drone storage sites, as well as coastal radar facilities.

Four targets along the Iranian coast bordering the Strait of Hormuz and Qeshm island were struck with six US aircraft, a senior US official told Fox News.

US President Donald Trump wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social, that Tehran launched at least four one-way attack drones at ships. He said American forces intercepted three, while one struck a cargo ship, causing damage, and described the attack as a “foolish violation” of a ceasefire agreement.

“You’ll find out,” he told reporters when asked about a potential response.

US Vice President JD Vance seemingly threatened Iran later in the day, saying “violence will be met with violence” in a statement on US social media company X.

”Iran signed a ceasefire agreement. We have honored it. If they have disagreements about how the MOU (memorandum of understanding) is being applied, they can pick up the phone,” he wrote.

On Thursday, the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) center said a cargo vessel was hit by an unknown projectile off Oman, causing damage to the ship’s bridge. No casualties or environmental damage were reported.

CENTCOM called the alleged Iran attack “dangerous behavior” and said the “unwarranted aggression” by Iran “clearly” violated the ceasefire.

The statement followed Iranian state television reporting that an explosion was heard in the city of Sirik in Hormozgan Province, which overlooks the Strait of Hormuz, but no information was disclosed on the source of the explosion.

Iran’s top joint military command warned Friday against what it described as Israeli military aircraft using the airspace of neighboring countries to approach Iran.

In a statement carried by state-run broadcaster IRIB, the Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters said the movement and presence of the “terrorist army of the Zionist regime” in the skies of some neighboring countries toward Iran is a dangerous act and a threat to the country.

The statement, however, did not specify which neighboring country or countries it was referring to.

The headquarters warned that if the US is unable to restrain or control Israel, Iran “will not tolerate any threat against itself.”

It added that Tehran reserves the right to respond to “dangerous” actions.

In the first publicly announced contact between the two countries since the outbreak of the US-Israeli war against Iran, UAE Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan held a phone call with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Friday, Anadolu reports.

According to the UAE Foreign Ministry, the two officials reviewed “the latest regional developments” following the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the US and Iran aimed at ending the war that came into force on June 18.

Bin Zayed stressed “the importance of full compliance with the provisions of the agreement” and said “serious diplomacy and responsible dialogue” remain the preferred means of addressing regional and international crises.

The UAE is among the Gulf countries that came under Iranian attacks during the war launched by Israel and the US on Feb. 28, with Tehran saying its strikes targeted US bases and interests.
