Insane thinktanks destroying our World

Spread the love

This is very draft, unfinished but at least I’ve started. Please expect it to be extended and elaborated.

Thinktanks are here as a huge part of the political landscape providing ready-made policy and even huge quantities of staff to governments matching their bigoted perspectives. The topic of thinktanks can be overwhelming and easily lead to distraction.

I had not realised that thinktanks have such influence in contemporary politics. It’s claims that thinktanks exerted huge influence over Brexit and that the Conservative manifesto was written and the Labour manifesto mostly written by think tanks. [M]

There is also the claim that donating to a thinktank gets you far better influence for your money than simply donating to a political party and that thinktanks are so influential because they have such huge media exposure. [M] George Monbiot complains that thinktanks are often presented in the media as experts without any mention of their political biases. [GM]

There are claims that thinktanks and the media conspire to promote their mostly shared agendas. I’ve come across this claim from two sources so expect that it’s probably correct. So you have lobbying, the mostly right-wing media and mostly right-wing thinktanks exerting their malign influence – the agenda of the rich and powerful – in politics and on political parties. [need to find these refs]

There are left-wing as well as right-wing thinktanks although it appears that right-wing ones are more influential, quite possibly through being far better funded.

One issue that I was chasing down in writing this article is how thinktanks can propose the totally insane position of exploit fossil fuels to the fullest extent possible – a proposition adopted by US and UK governments.

[M] article explains ‘The ASI’s chief executive Madsen Pirie has said that they propose things that at first are thought of as the “edge of lunacy”, which then become the “edge of policy”.’ This is the explanation for the exploit fossil fuels to the fullest extent proposition – it is actual, literal lunacy passing for policy. This is Heritage Foundation lunacy contained in it’s Project 2025, a detailed insane program of actions for the next insane Republican president and govenment to follow.

It is insane, isn’t it? The world is burning to a crisp with extreme weather events all over the globe, we’re likely to pass 1.5C in a few years when we’re already fekked at 1.1 or 1.2C and these insane fekkers want to accelerate global destruction. Why is anyone taking them seriously? They belong in an asylum. We’re talking about people getting killed and nature destroyed on a huge scale!

Heritage Foundation is the largest, most influential thinktank in US. It provided huge nimbers of staff for the Trump administration and promoted the idea that the 2020 election was stolen from Trump.

Rishi Sunak and Grant Shapps
Rishi Sunak and Grant Shapps

PRIME MINISTER Rishi Sunak jetted into Scotland today [Monday] to announce a cash bonanza for the oil majors, just days after the United Nations announced that “the era of global boiling has arrived.”

Companies such as Shell and BP, which coined £3 billion each in just the last three months, continue to enjoy the Prime Minister’s generosity.

Having already doled out billions of pounds worth of windfall tax breaks to fossil fuel majors in the North Sea, Mr Sunak has said he will back the granting of over 100 new oil and gas licences and provide up to £20bn in state handouts to carbon capture and storage.

Despite the proposed fields not likely to come on stream for over a decade, Mr Sunak and ministers such as Energy Secretary Grant Shapps claim that the supply would ensure energy security and aid in “safeguarding bills for British families.”

Mr Sunak argued his policy to prolong production of oil and gas by decades “is entirely consistent with our plans to get to net zero” — a target due to be met in just seven years.

The Prime Minister’s remarks united climate activists, anti-poverty campaigners, trade unionists and opposition politicians in their condemnation of a policy they argue ditches international commitments on climate change, fails to deliver a fair transition for workers, and will not help those struggling to pay heating bills this winter.

In a statement, climate activists Just Stop Oil branded the 100 new licences expected to be granted this autumn as “100 new crimes against humanity,” adding: “Rishi Sunak and his fossil fuel backers are taking us all for fools.

Just Stop Oil paint the Department for Energy Security & Net Zero
Just Stop Oil paint the Department for Energy Security & Net Zero

{Wow, what an nut Shapps is, that takes some effort} The Secretary of State for the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, Grant Shapps, has been ridiculed after his latest political stunt spectacularly backfired.

After campaigners from the climate protest group Just Stop Oil sprayed orange paint onto the department for energy security and net zero’s headquarters in Westminster on Wednesday after its decision to issue more than 100 new oil and gas licences in the UK, Shapps decided to invoice the Labour Party for the damage to the building.

The Tory minister drew on a familiar baseless Tory attack line, posting a ridiculous letter on Twitter and claiming that Just Stop Oil was the ‘political wing of the Labour Party’.

The Tories have repeatedly tried to claim, incorrectly, that Just Stop Oil funds the Labour Party. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak previously made the claim which was fact checked and proven to be false by organisations such as Full Fact which wrote to the Prime Minister asking him to prove his claim.

Just Stop Oil marchers kettled by counter-protestors as scientists warn ‘we are damned fools’ for not acting on crisis

Just Stop Oil supporters are disrupting roads in central London during their thirteenth week of continuous resistance against new oil, gas and coal.

Throughout the morning, starting from 9am, 132 supporters began marching in nine groups around West, East London and South London. This morning’s marches have been eventful. On Cromwell Road, a coach was seen driving into the march, whilst in Elephant and Castle, a march was kettled by a group of counter-protestors wearing t-shirts emblazoned with ‘Just Stop Pissing Everyone Off’. Polite discourse about the necessity for culturally disruptive action ensued, as the Just Stop Oil supporters sat and gave personal testimonies whilst encircled.

One Just Stop Oil supporter addressed the counter-protestors, who applauded her as she spoke:

“I’d like to see how long you are willing to stand there, because this is great for us, we’re having conversations and I think it’s been so beneficial this morning being able to meet with some of you lovely people and have these conversations with you, and for us to find out why we’re here and why you’re here, because believe me we are the ordinary people and we have the power. The only thing that needs to happen now is we need to connect the dots and join together.”

After some discussion the anti-Just Stop Oil protestors left cordially, and the march proceeded on the road.
