Hamas described on Tuesday evening the approval by the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defence Committee of a plan to ban essential services to UNRWA offices as a “serious escalation”.
In a statement, the movement said, “The approval by the so-called Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defence Committee of a plan to cut essential services, including water and electricity, to UNRWA offices is a dangerous escalation. It is part of a systematic criminal campaign to undermine its humanitarian role for the Palestinian people.”
Hamas called on the international community, the United Nations, and its institutions “to take responsibility and put an end to the systematic targeting of UNRWA by Israel, and to force the occupation to reverse its illegal measures against the agency.”
The movement also urged support for UNRWA to continue “its humanitarian mission to serve and assist the refugees of our people, especially amid the unprecedented humanitarian disaster caused by the occupation in Gaza.”
Earlier on Monday, the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defence Committee approved sending a bill to cut water and electricity supplies to a UNRWA offices for a vote.

A PALESTINE ACTION hunger striker was rushed to hospital some 24 hours after she reported needing urgent medical attention on her 46th day without food at HMP Bronzefield today.
Supporters including Zarah Sultana MP, doctors and trade unionists demanded immediate hospitalisation and independent medical assessment for 20-year-old Qesser Zuhrah for more than 12 hours before she was transferred out of the site by ambulance.
The Your Party MP said that Ms Zuhrah had been “refused an ambulance by the prison. She is critically ill and at immediate risk of dying.”
Online footage showed protesters chanting “let the doctor go” as a man was arrested around the time an ambulance left the scene at about 2.30pm.
Ms Zuhrah has been on remand at HMP Bronzefield awaiting trial over an August 2024 break-in at an Israeli defence firm near Bristol by the direct action group.
She is among dozens of Palestine Action activists who have been detained well over the six-month custody threshold after it was proscribed in July.
Ms Zuhrah was reportedly unable to stand and began suffering “severe” pain that required urgent medical attention from Tuesday afternoon.
Campaigners for her and other hunger strikers said that repeated calls for emergency care were made, but “prison staff have so far refused entry to ambulances and delayed treatment overnight.”
The demonstration was held outside the prison from 1.20am and the demands of the eight hunger strikers were graffitied across Mr Lammy’s north London office by Shut the System Activists.
The statement included a call for an end to media censorship, immediate bail, the right to a fair trial, the de-proscription of Palestine Action and to close all sites of Israel’s main arms supplier, Elbit Systems.
South East Coast Ambulance Service said that it did not comment on individual cases, and referred queries to the Ministry of Justice (MoJ), which was contacted for comment.
PM Sir Keir Starmer was meanwhile accused of “a lack of humanity toward people at serious risk of death” by Jeremy Corbyn MP.
The former Labour leader asked him if the MoJ would meet lawyers for the hunger strikers in the Commons.
Mr Corbyn told Sir Keir that “these are all prisoners on remand, they’re not convicted of anything. A further prisoner has been taken to hospital, as have others.
“Many people are very concerned about the regular breaches of prison conditions and prison rules in respect of these hunger strikers.

Diane Abbott, Zarah Sultana, Ayoub Khan, John McDonnell and Lord Hendy KC were among those who signed the open letter telling Mr Lammy to take “responsibility and show some humanity before it is too late.”
Mr Lammy’s office was targeted by protesters from Shut The System today, who graffitied their demands in red on the north London building.

Civil defence teams in the Gaza Strip managed on Tuesday to recover the bodies of 30 people from a Palestinian family, out of 60 who died under the rubble of their home in western Gaza City, destroyed by Israeli airstrikes during the ongoing conflict.
The house is the first site in an organised operation launched by the civil defence on Monday to search for thousands of Palestinian bodies trapped under the ruins of homes and buildings destroyed by Israeli strikes.
In a statement, the civil defence said: “For the second day in a row, our teams have recovered 30 bodies and remains of martyrs, out of 60, belonging to members of the Salem family, who were trapped under the rubble of the Abu Ramadan family home. They were targeted while inside by the occupation in the Al-Rimal area, west of Gaza City.”
The statement added that search operations will continue using limited equipment, including a digger, to recover the remaining bodies from the house destroyed by the Israeli army on 19 December 2023.
On Monday, the civil defence announced the start of organised operations to search for the bodies of Palestinians missing under the rubble of homes and small buildings destroyed by Israel during months of mass attacks in Gaza City.

The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), the League of Arab States and the African Union Commission have called on the international community to take all necessary measures to hold the Israeli occupation accountable for all violations and crimes it has committed.
In a joint statement, the three organisations urged that Israel be prosecuted before national, regional and international courts, particularly the International Criminal Court and the International Court of Justice, in order to end impunity and ensure international protection for the Palestinian people.
The statement was issued following a consultative meeting held on Tuesday at the headquarters of the OIC in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, which focused on developments related to the Palestinian cause.
The organisations referred to the peace plan announced by the President of the United States and signed during the international peace summit held in Sharm El-Sheikh in October 2015, under Egyptian and American auspices and with the participation of Qatar and Turkey.
The plan, later endorsed by the UN Security Council in Resolution 2803, was described as the starting point for ending the bloodshed, ensuring unhindered access for humanitarian aid, securing the withdrawal of Israeli occupation forces, restoring normal life, and convening an international conference in Cairo to implement the Arab-Islamic plan for early recovery and reconstruction in the Gaza Strip.
They said these steps would open an irreversible path towards the realisation of the two-state solution.
The three organisations also strongly condemned Israeli statements regarding the opening of the Rafah crossing in one direction only. They expressed their absolute rejection of any attempts or plans to displace the Palestinian people, whether in the Gaza Strip or the West Bank, describing such actions as a war crime, a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law, and a serious threat to regional and international peace and security.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stormed the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in occupied East Jerusalem on Tuesday to celebrate the Jewish Hanukkah holiday, Anadolu reports.
In a statement, the Jerusalem Governorate denounced Netanyahu’s visit to the mosque’s Western Wall (Al-Buraq Wall) “a new provocative move.”
The Al-Buraq Wall, called by Jews as the Western Wall or Wailing Wall, is a significant religious site for both Muslims and Jews and forms part of the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound.
Netanyahu’s office shared photos of the premier, along with several officials, including US Ambassador Mike Huckabee, while visiting the Western Wall at the flashpoint site.
The eight-day Hanukkah holiday is marked from Dec. 14 to Dec. 22.
According to Palestinian authorities, at least 210 illegal Israeli settlers broke into the Al-Aqsa Mosque complex to mark the occasion since Monday.
Al-Aqsa Mosque is the world’s third-holiest site for Muslims. Jews call the area the Temple Mount, saying it was the site of two Jewish temples in ancient times.
Israel occupied East Jerusalem, where Al-Aqsa is located, during the 1967 Arab-Israeli War. It annexed the entire city in 1980 in a move never recognized by the international community.
