Former Welsh First Minister Mark Drakeford was also pressing the case for a wealth tax, joining former Labour leader Neil Kinnock, who had said at the weekend that the government should explore the idea.
Mr Drakeford told the BBC that Ms Reeves should look at taxing the online gambling industry and banking profits. “I think wealth taxes absolutely need to be looked at,” he added.
“We’re a sharply unequal society. We’ve become more and more unequal. The root of that inequality is the way that wealth is distributed across the population.”

Visiting Washington, Benjamin Netanyahu delighted in telling Donald Trump that he had nominated him for the Nobel peace prize. The Israeli prime minister cited Mr Trump’s efforts to end conflicts in the Middle East. But in truth he is grateful to the US president for joining his war against Iran last month and for allowing carnage in Gaza to continue after a brief pause. He is also eager that the US president does not strong‑arm him into another ceasefire. Perhaps the indirect talks between Hamas and Israel in Qatar will reach a temporary deal again, with hostages released and possibly more aid allowed in. Even so, few expect that a lasting peace would result.
Words matter. They have become so detached from reality when it comes to Israel’s war in Gaza that it is not merely absurd, or despicable, but obscene. The defence minister, Israel Katz, has laid out plans for a “humanitarian city”: this means forcing all Palestinians in Gaza into a camp that the military would bar them from leaving. Prof Amos Goldberg, a historian of the Holocaust, used the accurate words: it would be “a concentration camp or a transit camp for Palestinians before they expel them”. The “emigration plan” which Mr Katz says “will happen”, according to the Israeli newspaper Haaretz, is in fact an ethnic cleansing plan. No departure can be considered voluntary when the alternative is starvation or indefinite imprisonment in inhuman conditions.

Destroying Palestinians’ means of survival, planning the removal of Gaza’s population and envisioning its outright destruction are surely not merely brutal acts but ones committed with “intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group” – the definition of genocide in the UN convention.

THE NHS could face six months of disruption after resident doctors in England voted in favour of strike action today.
Downing Street said that pay negotiations would not be reopened because the government “can’t be more generous” than it has been already this year.
Some 90 per cent of voting resident doctors in England, formerly known as junior doctors, said they would down stethoscopes and take to picket lines amid an ongoing row over pay.
The British Medical Association (BMA) said that there had been a turnout of 55 per cent and that resident doctors needed an increase of 29.2 per cent to reverse “pay erosion” since 2008-09.
The union added that there was “still time to avert strike action” and urged the government to “come forward as soon as possible with a credible path to pay restoration.”

LABOUR could lose trade union support to a new party of the left, former union leader Len McCluskey has warned.
Mr McCluskey, general secretary of Unite the union from 2011 to 2021, told GB News that the new party called for by independent MPs Zarah Sultana and Jeremy Corbyn could prove attractive to disillusioned trade unionists.
“If this new party demonstrates it’s credible, then trade unions will consider their affiliations,” he said.
“If the new party proves credible, then I will join it, I will campaign for it and I will urge individuals and trade unions to give their support.
