A crowd of people watching the setting sun from a hill in Ealing, west LondonMINISTERS blocked the publication of an intelligence report warning that climate change could cause “global competition for food” by the 2030s and trigger nuclear war in Asia.
The study, reportedly held back by Number 10 last autumn for being too negative, also highlights the potential for a massive increase in climate refugees.
A freedom of information request forced the release of the report put together in part by the joint intelligence committee, the body overseeing MI5 and MI6.
But the government only published an abridged version of the study, describing a “realistic possibility” that the decline of forests and glacier-fed rivers would lead to “global competition for food” beginning in the 2030s.
The unabridged version of the study goes further, according to The Times.
It describes a “reasonable worst-case scenario” in which several ecosystems could pass a tipping point as soon as 2030 after which it would be impossible to stop environmental degradation. This includes forests in Canada and Russia, as well as glaciers in the Himalayas that feed rivers on which two billion people depend.
Melting glaciers in the Asian mountain range would “almost certainly escalate tensions” between China, India and Pakistan, intelligence chiefs warned, which could potentially lead to nuclear conflict.
Britain would struggle to feed itself unless it made big investments into supply chains, the report said.

Reform UK’s mayoral candidate for London has been accused of endangering Muslims after she said women wearing the burqa should be subject to stop and search.
Laila Cunningham, who was announced as Reform’s candidate for the 2028 mayoral elections last week, said no one should cover their face “in an open society”, adding: “It has to be assumed that if you’re hiding your face, you’re hiding it for a criminal reason.”
Cunningham told the Standard podcast: “If you go to parts of London, it does feel like a Muslim city. The signs are written in a different language. You’ve got burqas being sold in markets.” She said there should be “one civic culture” and it “should be British”.

The crossbench peer Shaista Gohir, who is the CEO of the Muslim Women’s Network UK, called Cunningham’s comments “dangerous” and a “dog whistle” to racists and said they would further alienate Muslim women, including the minority who wear a burqa.

It points, far more than the numerous other high-profile defections from the Conservatives to Reform, towards a concentration of significant political forces behind an exceptionally authoritarian and chauvinistic variant of neoliberalism.
The shadow justice secretary may have jumped slightly before he was ready because of Kemi Badenoch’s decisive move but his rightward trajectory was long headed towards destination Farage. The discovery of his draft resignation letter appears to have precipitated her dismissal of what had become a very troublesome princeling.
Jenrick’s growing alignment with Nigel Farage indicates first, that Reform is increasingly seen as the only viable game in town for the hard right and, second, that the party is intensifying its plans to form a government after the next general election.
To plausibly offer itself as a ruling party, Reform needs more experienced politicians who could step into ministerial office. Jenrick, a cynical and unscrupulous opportunist, fits that bill.
Originally a modestly liberal “Cameron Conservative” and a Remainer, he has rebranded himself as an authoritarian xenophobe.
Since losing the 2024 Tory leadership election to Badenoch, his most notable political interventions have been to bemoan the lack of “white faces” he saw during a brief visit to the Handsworth district of Birmingham, and a Conservative conference call for the wholesale sacking of judges he dislikes, to be replaced by those he prefers.

‘Go back home’: Farage schoolmate accounts bring total alleging racist behaviour to 34

Thirty-four school contemporaries of Nigel Farage have now come forward to claim they saw him behave in a racist or antisemitic manner, raising fresh questions over the Reform leader’s evolving denials.
One of those with new allegations is Jason Meredith, who was three years below Farage at Dulwich college, a private school in south-east London. He claims that Farage called him a “paki” and would use taunts such as “go back home”.
Meredith, 58, who is of Anglo-Indian heritage and has lived in Switzerland where he works as a product manager since 1999, said it was support for anti-racism that motivated him to come forward.
He told the Guardian: “What really irked me was the denial [by Farage] of being racist.”
“The word ‘paki’ was bandied by him – by Farage – there was kind of an entourage, if I remember right, hangers on,” Meredith said. “‘Go back home.’ The taunts is something I remember, the word ‘paki’, ‘go back home’ being used, certainly more than once. Simple taunts like ‘Jason is a paki’. I was 15, 16, something like that.”
Meredith is one of several contemporaries to have alleged to the Guardian they were victims of targeted abuse by Farage, who has come under sustained pressure from politicians belonging to various parties to “own up” and apologise. So far, Farage has refused to do so.
