The quid pro quo allegation
Two weeks ago, the Nerve published its first story in this series, in which we forensically examined how the pattern of Harborne’s donations closely tracked Farage and Johnson’s public statements about cryptocurrency policy reform, specifically so-called stablecoins. Harborne’s wealth derives in large part from Tether, a stablecoin.
This week, the Nerve’s new evidence shines a new light on the sequence of events that preceded Britain’s exit from the EU, and Harborne’s relationship with Farage and later Johnson.
But those relationships with Farage and Johnson are now a matter of both intense public interest and legal jeopardy. Mr Harborne’s lawyers, Schillings, repeatedly declined to answer any of our questions or requests for comment.
We are publishing these new revelations two weeks after Harborne filed a defamation claim in the High Court against a former leading member of Reform, Ben Habib.
In an interview last month with the YouTuber Maximilien Robespierre, Habib claimed that Harborne’s £5m gift to Farage had been part of a deal that saw the 2019 election “sewn up between Nigel Farage, Christopher Harborne and Boris Johnson”. He alleged that the election that led to Brexit was “a monetary deal” and that individual £1m payments were made to both Johnson and Farage to secure a Brexit pact.
Harborne did gift £1m to Johnson but not until three years later, in 2022, after Johnson had left office. There is no evidence to suggest any connection to Habib’s claim. It has also now been revealed that Farage received £5m from Harborne. Farage initially claimed it was to pay for a lifetime’s security but subsequently said it had been a “reward for campaigning for Brexit”. He denies Habib’s claim and wrote on X last month that his lawyers had written to him to demand an apology. Neither Farage nor Johnson responded to our requests for comment.
We have carefully weighed the public interest but believe that fresh evidence raises new questions about the events of November 2019, contemporaneous reporting of a possible pact between Johnson and Farage, and the relevance of Harborne’s donations to Britain’s departure from the EU.

Every day the political class announces another initiative, pledge, roadmap or “ambitious target.” And every day, the material reality moves closer to total collapse. At some point, we must confront a simple truth: the elites are not failing accidentally — they are participating in a death project. They are driving a system that destroys itself, destroys life, and destroys the conditions for civilisation, even when warned by their own institutions and scientists.
This is not just incompetence. It is not even simple greed. What we are witnessing is something deeper and more pathological — a mixture of elite degeneration, the death wish, and a civilisation unable to confront its own end. This piece gathers my recent reflections on why elites refuse to act, why capitalism is running toward its own destruction, and why the outcome is now structurally revolutionary.
Do we want a place in this miracle?
We live in a universe – do we want a place in this infinite miracle?
Do we want to stand for life?
Do we want to live rather than die?
Because at this point — to repeat a million times — we have become revolutionaries. Not in the neoliberal performative identity-bollocks way.
But actually, literally revolutionary.
Even Colombian President, Petro Gustavo, put it plainly:
“I know that decarbonisation requires a transformation on a global scale, a revolution. But it must be undertaken if humanity is to live on for millennia, or even millions of years, in the universe.”
Reality is no longer ideological.
It is existential.

The death wish: why elites act against their own survival
The biggest misunderstanding in the world is that people act out of material self-interest.
No.
Many people want to die — and want the world to die with them — because they hate themselves and they hate life so much. This is the death wish. It is supported by a century of psychoanalysis, social psychology, and history: under existential threat, societies often choose self-destruction over transformation.

This insight is reinforced by decades of experimental work in Terror Management Theory (Greenberg, Pyszczynski, Solomon), which shows that under conditions of heightened mortality awareness people become more authoritarian, more aggressive and more willing to support destructive systems, even against their own material interests.
The repeated historical pattern of elites knowingly destroying the very systems they depend on — from late Rome to pre-revolutionary Europe to today’s fossil economy — fits this psychological picture far better than any rational-actor model. What we are seeing is not rational self-interest, but the death wish operating at a civilisational scale.
Why else do capitalists knowingly act in a way that will destroy capitalism?
Gunther Thallinger of Allianz SE, one of the world’s largest insurance companies, spells it out: “The financial system as we know it ceases to exist and capitalism ceases to be viable at 3°C.” A few years ago, I sat down with a director of E3G — a leading climate think tank. Privately, he admitted that the “death project” will destroy the British state. Publicly, he would never say it.
Yet elites continue to accelerate the trajectory toward 3°C.
This is not rational self-interest.
It is civilisation-wide self-destruction.

Here’s an example of such elite madness: Heathrow’s third runway. The news last week is that it will finally be built by 2035.
Just as the world hits 2°C.
Just as the global economy collapses.
Just as flying becomes impossible.
But don’t worry — there will be a “full public consultation by July next year.”
This is the death wish as public policy.

Greta Thunberg has warned that 40C heatwaves in the UK are “only the beginning” and says Britain’s leaders have “their heads completely buried in the sand” regarding climate change.
Her comments follow revelations that Labour ministers met fossil fuel industry lobbyists more than 500 times during the party’s first year in power, while Labour MPs took tens of thousands of pounds in donations from oil and gas lobbyists.
The activist, 23, was speaking as the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) issued a rare red heat-health alert for the first time since 2022, with temperatures forecast to reach as high as 40C later this week.
“This is what experts have been warning about for decades,” Thunberg told Metro. “This is unfortunately only the beginning.”
She added: “We know that the climate crisis is here and now, and not a faraway threat in the future, and those suffering the most are the ones who have contributed the least to cause it.”

A week of heatwaves that were entirely predictable
The UK is about to go over 35C for three days in a row. We are at a global warming increase of 1.5C, and temperatures are now rising by 0.4C a decade, meaning we will be hitting 2C in ten years. Meaning the UK’s wiring, roads, railway lines and housing will be melting, subsiding and heading underwater.

And yes, to round it off, Starmer sat back and allowed judges to give years-long sentences to the most courageous members of the younger generation — people who took proportionate peaceful action to force reality onto the agenda, and who are going to have to spend their whole lives dealing with this shit.
At the very minimum, to make any real difference, the UK has to get to zero emissions by 2035. Pretending otherwise is the purest of pure bullshit.
Entirely predictable
When the Nazis saw thousands of tanks coming over the horizon in 1944, they thought it was “nothing short of astonishing.”
Since then, everyone else has thought it was entirely predictable.
There’s a real world out there. It was coming to kill Nazis in the past. It is coming to kill our children in the very near future.
