Noting that species are at risk from not only warming waters but also overfishing, one expert argued that “any management reform must simultaneously address both drivers of change.”

Humanity’s continued reliance on fossil fuels led to last year being among the hottest on record, and oceans store over 90% of the excess heat from greenhouse gases. A study out Wednesday details how the related long-term heating, warm years, and marine heatwaves “pose serious but poorly quantified threats” to fish species.

“To put it simply, the faster the ocean floor warms, the faster we lose fish,” lead author Shahar Chaikin of Spain’s National Museum of Natural Sciences (MNCN) told the Guardian. “A 7.2% decline for every tenth of a degree per decade might sound small… But compounded over time, across entire ocean basins, it represents a staggering and deeply concerning loss of marine life.”

For the study, published in the journal Nature Ecology & Evolution, Chaikin, his MNCN colleague Miguel B. Araújo and the National University of Colombia’s Juan David González-Trujillo analyzed 702,037 estimates of biomass change for 33,990 populations of 1,566 fish species across the Mediterranean, north Atlantic, and northeast Pacific between 1993 and 2021.

“On shorter timescales, warmer years and marine heatwaves were linked to sharp biomass losses of up to 43.4% in populations at the warm edge of the species’ range and biomass increases of up to 176% at the cold edge,” the study states. Chaikin warned in a statement that the temporary jumps in cooler areas could send misleading signals to managers of fisheries.

“Although this sudden increase in biomass in cold waters may seem like good news for fisheries, these are transient increases,” he explained. “If managers raise catch quotas based on biomass increases caused by a heatwave, they risk causing the collapse of populations when temperatures return to normal or when the effect of long-term warming prevails, because these are short-lived increases.”

González-Trujillo stressed that “unlike extreme short-term weather fluctuations, which can vary dramatically, this chronic warming exerts a constant negative pressure on fish populations in the Mediterranean Sea, the north Atlantic Ocean, and the northeastern Pacific Ocean.”

Specifically, Chaikin said that “when we remove the noise of extreme short-term weather events, the data show that this warming is associated with a sustained annual decline in biomass of up to 19.8%.”

Are warmer oceans good or bad for #fish? 🐟 The answer is a dangerous paradox. Our new paper in @natecoevo.nature.com shows how marine heatwaves may create “fake” fish gains that mask a large-scale crash. Read our findings here: www.nature.com/articles/s41…@mncn-csic.bsky.social #ClimateChange

Shahar Chaikin (@shaharchaikin.bsky.social) 2026-02-25T10:05:40.124Z

Given the findings, Araújo emphasized that fisheries’ managers “must balance localized increases with long-term declines extremely carefully to avoid overexploitation.”

“As ocean warming continues, the only viable strategy is to prioritize long-term resilience,” the study co-author said. “Management measures must plan for the biomass decline expected in an increasingly warm ocean.”

Carlos García-Soto is a scientist at the Spanish National Research Council, which manages MNCN. Although not a study co-author, he also highlighted the need for policymakers to understand the “clear risk of misinterpretation” detailed in the new paper.

“In a context of accelerated climate change, policies cannot react solely to extreme events or be based on short-term signals,” García-Soto said in a statement. “They need consistency between science, planning, and governance, especially in shared ecosystems or on the high seas.”

Also responding to the research on Wednesday, Guillermo Ortuño Crespo of the International Union for Conservation of Nature said that “I believe this is a methodologically sound and valuable study that provides valuable evidence on how different components of ocean warming affect fish biomass.”

While recognizing the well-documented and devastating impacts of fossil fuel-driven heating on marine species, Ortuño Crespo also warned that “there is a risk, in my opinion, that climate change will become the main explanation for changes in marine species biomass, leaving aside overfishing.”

“Historically, overfishing has been the main determinant of biomass declines in many fisheries around the world,” he noted, citing the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization. “The proportion of overexploited stocks globally continues to increase, indicating that fishing pressure remains a dominant risk factor. The current challenge is that this overfishing crisis is being further exacerbated by ocean warming and deoxygenation.”

“In terms of public policy, the study is highly relevant because it emphasizes that fisheries management systems must become more climate-adaptive,” Ortuño Crespo said. “Any management reform must simultaneously address both drivers of change: climate and fisheries. Adjusting quotas solely on the basis of climate without reducing overcapacity and the impact of high-impact gear, such as bottom trawling, is likely to be insufficient to recover stocks.”

Morning Star Editorial: Time for clarity – no support for a US attack on Iran

President Donald Trump listens during a Board of Peace meeting at the U.S. Institute of Peace, February 19, 2026, in Washington

PRESIDENT Donald Trump has now assembled the largest US military force in the Middle East since the disastrous and criminal Iraq invasion in 2003.

It is not there for show. The chatter from Washington is that a US attack on Iran is now a “90 per cent” likelihood.

It is still possible that the deployment is simply to pressure the Iranian regime into complying with US demands regarding its nuclear power programme and its wider policy across the region.

But Trump has already attacked Iran once during his second term, and he is under pressure from the Israeli government to move towards overthrowing the regime in Tehran, something that would require military action on a far larger scale than previously, and co-ordination with pro-US political forces like the son of the deposed Shah.

So the danger of war seems imminent. The anti-war and labour movements here in Britain need to be clear-sighted.

Any military action by Trump, or Israel, or both would be a gross violation of international legality and a criminal imperialist adventure which would risk an escalating conflict across the Middle East. The peoples of the region, including the Iranian people, would be the losers.

If Trump and Starmer want a peaceful and stable Middle East, Israel is the rogue power which needs to be curbed. Instead it is armed, supported and diplomatically protected by the imperialist powers.

These are not nuances, but the heart of the crisis in the Middle East. The anti-war and solidarity movements here must not be distracted from their main responsibility — challenging the imperialist interventions and alliances of the Starmer government — by the temptation to sit in moral judgement on those who are its targets.

The future of Iran is for the Iranian people alone to determine. US or Israeli military intervention must be firmly opposed, and the British government pressed to dissociate from any such plan.

Algorithms and AI have turned Gaza into a laboratory of death

The revelations by +972 Magazine and Local Call have exposed the darkest core of the contemporary war in Gaza, in which genocide is carried out not only by bombs and missiles, but by data, algorithms and global digital platforms.

The Israeli artificial intelligence system known as Lavender has confirmed what the Palestinian resistance, Lebanon, and Iran have denounced for years: Technology as an organic part of the Zionist war machine, functioning as an instrument of surveillance, target selection, and mass extermination.

The liberal rhetoric of “digital privacy” collapses in the face of the facts. Applications such as WhatsApp insist on the promise of end-to-end encryption, but conceal what is essential, in which metadata are worth more than messages.

Location, contact networks, patterns of communication, and group affiliations make it possible to map the social life of an entire people. In Gaza, these data have been incorporated into military systems that turn human relationships into algorithmic criteria for death.

Lavender assessed virtually the entire population of the Gaza Strip, comprising more than 2.3 million people, assigning automated “risk scores”. Merely being in a WhatsApp group, maintaining frequent contact with someone already marked, or displaying digital patterns considered “suspicious” was enough to be placed on execution lists.

Human supervision was deliberately minimal, reduced to seconds, with conscious acceptance of high error rates. Entire families were killed in their homes, treated as “acceptable collateral damage” in an algorithmic equation that normalises massacre.

This is not a technical deviation. It is a policy of extermination. International Humanitarian Law explicitly prohibits indiscriminate attacks and requires distinction between civilians and combatants.

Systems that automate lethal decisions, pre-accepting the death of innocents, constitute crimes against humanity and reinforce the characterisation of genocide as a technologically organised and rationalised process.

The machinery that sustains this model is global. Twenty-first century espionage no longer depends on intercepting messages, but on controlling digital ecosystems.

Private platforms function as permanent sensors of planetary social life, feeding databases accessible to intelligence services such as the Mossad and the CIA, through formal cooperation, legal pressure or the exploitation of vulnerabilities. This represents a structural convergence between big tech companies, the military-industrial complex and the imperial security apparatus.

READ: Aid groups begin Gaza withdrawal after new Israeli restrictions

Palestine is the laboratory. In an official statement released during the war, Hamas stated on its Telegram channel that “the occupier has turned every modern tool into a weapon against the Palestinian people, using technology to justify the killing of civilians and to conceal genocide behind technical terms”

(free translation). The denunciation is clear: Israel is not waging a war against combatants, but against Palestinian existence itself, now mediated by algorithms.

Lebanese Hezbollah has warned that this model forms part of a regional hybrid war, combining digital surveillance, technological sabotage, and selective attacks.

After the attack that occurred in Lebanon in 2024, involving the coordinated explosion of pagers used by its members, Hezbollah declared through institutional channels that “the enemy has turned civilian devices into tools of assassination, proving that its war knows no ethical or human limits” (free translation). The episode revealed a new level in the weaponisation of everyday technology.

This pattern is not isolated. International investigations have already demonstrated the recurring use of military spyware against journalists, activists, and political leaders in various countries, often through smartphones widely available on the global market.

The message is unequivocal: every connected device is a potential instrument of surveillance, control, or death when inserted into the logic of imperial power.

Leaders of the Islamic Republic of Iran have been particularly outspoken. The Iranian Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has stated in various speeches that “the Zionist regime is a cancerous tumour that uses the most modern tools to oppress and massacre peoples”.

Iranian authorities maintain that Gaza foreshadows the future of imperial domination, in a world governed by algorithmic surveillance, selective assassinations, and “clean” wars only in rhetoric.

The Lavender case thus exposes the consolidation of a digital necropolitics. Algorithms decide who lives and who dies; corporations provide the infrastructure; intelligence services operate in the shadows; and technocratic language seeks to normalise the unacceptable. Gaza bleeds so that this model may be tested, refined, and then exported.

Denouncing this machinery is a historic task. It is not merely a matter of solidarity with the Palestinian people, although that solidarity is urgent and non-negotiable.

It is about resisting a world in which data are worth more than lives, in which technology serves colonialism, and in which genocide is presented as an “algorithmic decision”. Today it is Gaza. Tomorrow, any people who dare to resist.

ICE Agents Pretended to Be Women Having Car Trouble to Lure Unsuspecting Father of Six Into Arrest

“They lied to my dad that they needed help with their car,” his son said. “My dad’s a generous guy, he’s willing to help anybody.”

When two women knocked on the door of Jesus Emmanuel Flores-Aguilar, begging for help with their car, the father of six didn’t hesitate to help. But Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents ensured that his good deed would not go unpunished.

Minutes after Flores walked out of his home in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, on Thursday and got to work looking under the hood of the car, three unmarked SUVs sped toward him, tires screeching behind him.

Federal Agents Descend On Minneapolis For Immigration Enforcement Operations

Yet Another Case of ICE Agents—and DHS Officials—Lying About Shooting Incident Emerges

A horde of officers hopped out, raced toward Flores, and tackled him to the ground, footage recorded by a neighbor shows.

By Friday, Flores was already in an ICE detention facility in Texas, awaiting deportation.

“They lied to my dad that they needed help with their car,” said Flores’ son Miguel, who—like his siblings—is a US citizen. “I mean, they figured out that he was a mechanic. You know, my dad’s a generous guy, he’s willing to help anybody.”

Though he is undocumented, Flores, who is from Mexico, has lived in the US for more than 15 years.

In a statement to the Independent, Tricia McLaughlin, a spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), claimed that Flores was “a criminal illegal alien [from] Mexico and former Vatos Locos 13 gang member who was removed TWICE from this country, a felony.” She added that “his criminal history includes an arrest for felony assault.”

Fox 9 Minneapolis-St. Paul previously reported that when it searched for Flores’ criminal history, it found only parking violations.

The vast majority of those who have been swept up in President Donald Trump’s “mass deportation” campaign have not had any criminal records. According to data from DHS on January 25, just over 74% of those held in ICE detention have no criminal convictions.

“The main reason he came here to the United States and was willing to come back is to give us a better life, and that’s what he’s done. He’s sent me and my sister to college,” Miguel told Fox 9. “There’s no other reason to deport my dad, he’s a hard-working individual.”

Miguel’s father was the victim of the sort of deceptive tactics that have become a hallmark of ICE arrests and have often been deployed during Operation Metro Surge in Minneapolis and the surrounding area.

As the Associated Press reported earlier this month, ICE has regularly relied on what the agency calls “ruses” to pursue targets.

According to Minnesota’s large network of citizen observers, agents have shown up at construction sites in hard hats and yellow vests to lure laborers into their clutches. They’ve disguised themselves as delivery drivers or electricians to trick home and business owners into coming outside. They’ve been filmed leaving scenes with Mexican flag decals on their bumpers and stuffed animals on their dashboards. And in some cases, they’ve even posed as anti-ICE activists.

These tactics are not new. An agency memo from 2006 described them as “an effective law enforcement tool that enhances officer safety” and claims they are used “to prevent violators from fleeing and placing themselves, officers, and innocent bystanders in a potentially dangerous situation.”

But Naureen Shah, the director of immigration advocacy at the ACLU, argues that they have only sown chaos.

“If you have people afraid that the electrical worker outside their house might be ICE, you’re inviting public distrust and confusion on a much more dangerous level,” she told the AP. “This is what you do if you’re trying to control a populace, not trying to do routine, professional law enforcement.”

These tactics became more common during Trump’s first term, prompting a lawsuit from the ACLU, which claimed they violated the Fourth Amendment.

In August, a settlement banned agents from misrepresenting their identity and purpose in Los Angeles, but the practice continued elsewhere in the US.

Shah said ICE appears to be using these tactics in Minnesota to a “more extreme degree than we’ve seen in the past.”

Jesus’ arrest comes as Trump’s border czar, Tom Homan, who was put in charge of Metro Surge, said the operation was drawing to a close, with thousands of agents leaving the Minneapolis area.

However, this and other incidents in recent days have left residents on edge.

https://www.gofundme.com/f/support-the-flores-family-in-crisis/widget/large?sharesheet=undefined&attribution_id=sl%3A05a12729-649c-4d3b-807c-ef7d0e1a4103&utm_content=www.commondreams.org&utm_medium=referral&utm_source=widget#:~:tcm-regime=GDPR&tcm-prompt=Hidden

During the operation, CBS News Minnesota reported that Flores had been hunkered down in his home for weeks, hoping to avoid arrest.

Miguel said his family fears they may never see their father again.

Flores had already been deported once, 15 years ago. Miguel said lawyers have told him that getting his father out of detention would be a long shot.

Because immigration offenses are handled in civil court, Flores is not entitled to a government-paid public defender, as in criminal cases.

Miguel said his family is in desperate need of money, not just to pay for a lawyer but also to cover the cost of living and his siblings’ medical expenses. Flores’ wife, Dionicia, has described her husband as the family’s “lifeline.”

“This unexpected situation has left our family shocked, scared, heartbroken, and searching for answers,” Miguel wrote. “Jesus is leaving behind four children who depend on him every day. My older brother, who is 25 years old and was diagnosed with autism from a very young age, my little brother—9 years old—who was born with a whisper in the heart, my other little brother who is 6 years old is in therapy and requires extra care and support and was diagnosed with autism, and lastly my little sister who is 7, who is in need of multiple surgeries and ongoing medical care.”

In just three days, the family’s fundraising campaign has received more than $13,000.

Israel plans to restrict access to al-Aqsa mosque during Ramadan

Israeli authorities have planned to restrict Muslims’ access to al-Aqsa Mosque for prayers during the upcoming Islamic holy month of Ramadan, a well-known Muslim scholar and former grand mufti of Jerusalem said in an interview with Anadolu.

Sheikh Ekrima Sabri, former grand mufti of Jerusalem and head of the Supreme Islamic Council in Jerusalem, expressed regret for the Israeli administration’s plan to restrict access to the third-holiest mosque for Muslims during Ramadan, which begins midweek.

Israel’s ill intentions were clear when Maj. Gen. Avshalom Peled was appointed as a new police commander in occupied East Jerusalem in the first week of January, a move seen as an attempt to advance plans by far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir for the flashpoint Al-Aqsa Mosque. The Israeli newspaper Haaretz wrote, “It seems Ben-Gvir is doing everything he can to fan the flames.”

“Muslims welcome Ramadan with optimism, following the tradition of the Prophet Muhammad, who used to welcome the month at the end of Shaaban,” Sheikh Sabri told Anadolu. “But regarding Jerusalem, we regret the harsh measures the occupying authorities will impose on Muslims coming to Al-Aqsa Mosque.”

He said: “Israeli authorities have already barred dozens of young men from entering the mosque and announced that they will not ease restrictions during Ramadan for worshippers arriving from the occupied West Bank.”

READ: Grand Mufti says Israel uses war to tighten control over Al Aqsa Mosque

“This means there will be tighter restrictions,” Sabri said. “The number of worshippers at Al-Aqsa will be lower than in previous years. This contradicts freedom of worship and disrupts Muslims’ observance of the fasting month.”

Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians from the West Bank usually travel to occupied East Jerusalem during Ramadan to pray at al-Aqsa Mosque.

However, since the war began on Oct. 7, 2023, Israeli authorities have tightened restrictions at military checkpoints, limiting West Bank residents’ access to Jerusalem.

Over the past two years, only small numbers have received Israeli army-issued permits, which Palestinians say are difficult to obtain. Authorities have not announced any special arrangements for Ramadan this year.

In recent days, Israeli authorities also issued temporary orders against hundreds of Palestinian residents of East Jerusalem—most of them young men—banning them from entering al-Aqsa during Ramadan. Some of the orders extend up to six months.

The measures come as Israel’s right-wing government, led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, faces criticism from Palestinian officials over what they describe as changes to the long-standing “status quo” at the site.

However, local police have unilaterally allowed Israeli extremists to forcibly enter the mosque compound since 2003, despite repeated demands by the Islamic Waqf Department to stop the incursions.

“There is no doubt the right-wing government aims to implement its aggressive plan regarding al-Aqsa Mosque,” Sabri said. “For years, they demanded public entries, open prayers, the use of ritual horns, and prostration. What were once hidden ambitions have now become public.”

He added: “We have long warned that Israel seeks to impose sovereignty over the site and reduce the Islamic Waqf’s authority.”

However, Israeli measures are not limited to al-Aqsa Mosque. They also extend to Palestinian neighborhood demolition in the occupied East Jerusalem in general, and especially those near the mosque.

“The demolition policy is a racist, unjust, illegal, and inhumane policy, and it is an extension of Britain’s unjust policy in Palestine during the period of British colonial rule,” he lamented.

Sabri urged Arab and Islamic peoples to extend help to Palestinians in Jerusalem and called on Arab and Muslim leaders to shoulder their responsibilities toward Jerusalem and al-Aqsa Mosque.
