HAVANA—As the Trump administration tightens its energy blockade on Cuba and threatens war and regime change, the Cuban labor movement—along with all of Cuban society—is gearing up for a mass mobilization on May 1. The Workers’ Central Union of Cuba (CTC) and its affiliates have issued a call for this year’s May Day, International Workers’ Day, to “defend the homeland.”

Their labor movement’s call comes at a moment of maximum pressure. On Jan. 29, the White House imposed a total oil blockade on Cuba, cutting off nearly all fuel supplies to the island of 11 million people. Countries that dare to send oil face extreme sanctions. Combined with the intensified economic, commercial, and financial blockade that has suffocated Cuba for more than 65 years, the new measures aim to starve the Revolution into submission.

Now, the U.S.’ economic war is also poised to possibly become a fighting war. On April 15, USA Today reported that the Pentagon is speeding up plans for a potential U.S. military operation against Cuba, awaiting a directive from President Donald Trump as to when they might strike. The threat comes amid recent statements by Trump that “Cuba is next” after Iran and that he will “take” the island.

Cuban workers are not backing down

“Faced with the growing threats from the U.S. government, reinforced by the executive order of Jan. 29, which added an energy blockade to the already intensified embargo that has been imposed on us for more than 65 years simply for wanting to build a dignified, sovereign, and independent nation, there is nothing more important and decisive today than to work together and grow as a country,” the CTC declared in their May Day call.

The labor federation urged workers to celebrate May Day in militant parades and events in every workplace, town, municipality, and province.

“It is a call to defend the country, from the fields, the factories, the classrooms, the scientific centers, thermoelectric plants, hospitals, culture, sports; from every battle trench.”

‘We have not collapsed’

Cuba is facing its worst energy crisis in decades. Before the energy blockade, the country consumed about 110,000 barrels of oil per day, with 40,000 produced domestically and the rest imported from partners like Venezuela, Mexico, and Russia. Since January, that supply has virtually dried up. Only one Russian tanker has reached Cuban ports in three months, covering barely a third of monthly fuel demand.

The result is devastating, with major cities at a standstill, industry paralyzed, food becoming scarce, and hospitals struggling. Power blackouts have now become routine. Yet the Cuban people, their government, and the Communist Party refuse to break.

In an extensive interview with NBC’s Kristen Welker, President Miguel Díaz-Canel rejected the narrative of collapse.

“What country in the world would be capable, as Cuba has done, of enduring 67 years of sustained aggression from the most powerful nation in the world, with more than 60 years of blockade, with the last six or seven years of an intensified blockade, and now with an energy blockade, and not collapse? We have not collapsed.”

Díaz-Canel pointed to Cuba’s universal healthcare, free education from primary school to university, advances in biotechnology, and a safe society free of drug trafficking and organized crime.

“They are trying to impose a narrative of collapse on us when, through an aggressive, genocidal policy of blockade, they are leading us to live through a complex situation.”

Prepared to defend the revolution

When asked if Cuba is actively preparing for a possible U.S. attack, Díaz-Canel was direct: “Yes, we are preparing for defense.”

He recalled the words of 19th-century independence hero Antonio Maceo: “He will only gather the dust of his blood-soaked soil if he does not perish in the struggle.” Díaz-Canel added, “If you go out on the street now and say the first part of that phrase to a child, an elderly person, a young Cuban, they will immediately complete it. That is how we have been raised.”

Díaz-Canel also dismissed any notion that removing him, which the Trump administration and particularly Secretary of State Marco Rubio demand, would break the revolution.

“We have a collective leadership characterized by unity, cohesion, ideological unity, and revolutionary discipline. Removing one person solves nothing. There are hundreds of people capable of assuming that responsibility.

“The United States cannot impose change on us, nor can they demand it. The U.S. government has no moral authority to demand anything from Cuba.”

The Trump administration’s objectives remain murky. While Rubio — himself the son of Cuban migrants — has signaled a desire for regime change, the White House may be pursuing a more “pragmatic” goal: forced economic “liberalization” that benefits U.S. monopolies and billionaires.

According to reports, Washington seeks access to Cuba’s energy, ports, tourism, and telecom sectors, along with larger private enterprise, banking opening, and dismantling of state-owned enterprises.

‘Hands off Cuba!’

International solidarity with Cuba, a principle of working-class internationalism, continues to grow. The World Federation of Trade Unions’ (WFTU) week of action in solidarity with Cuba just concluded, and the international labor federation will continue to organize and mobilize its affiliates and members to stand in solidarity with Cuban workers.

Countries such as Mexico, Russia, China, Vietnam, and Spain have also expressed support for Cuba. More than 100 activists, trade unionists, and even European Parliament members recently arrived in Havana with half-a-million euros in humanitarian aid.

The Communist Party USA has also weighed in, demanding an immediate end to the criminal blockade and Cuba’s removal from the “State Sponsors of Terrorism” list. In the party’s May Day call, it declared: “Hands off Cuba! No war on Iran! Cut the military budget! End the forever wars! U.S. imperialism must be defeated!

“The same monopolies that drive down our wages and bust our unions operate internationally,” the party said. “They consciously pit workers of different countries against each other, including in wars, to maximize profits. Our resistance must reflect international solidarity.”

May Day as resistance

For this May Day, the CTC is invoking the legacy of independence hero José Martí, revolutionary leader Fidel Castro in his centennial year, and Army General Raúl Castro.

“We invite Cuba’s friends around the world to join us, as they do every year, in celebrating International Workers’ Day,” the CTC said.

“We thank them in advance for their solidarity and for having the courage to share our fate amidst a real military threat, which, far from intimidating us, makes us repeat, with optimism and confidence in victory, the glorious verse of our national anthem: ‘To die for the Fatherland is to live.’”

Díaz-Canel echoed that: “If the time comes, there will be a fight, there will be a battle. We will defend ourselves, and if we must die, we will die.”

But he also held out hope for dialogue. “What both the American and Cuban people deserve is peace—a peace that allows us to have an atmosphere of trust, cooperation, collaboration, solidarity, and understanding. Lift the embargo, and see what we can do.”

As May Day approaches, Cuban workers are preparing to march—not in desperation, but in determination. The homeland, they insist, will be defended.

‘Truly Insane’: Pentagon Threatened Pope After He Condemned Trump’s Military Attacks

The US “has the military power to do whatever it wants in the world,” a top official told the Vatican’s US representative. “The Catholic Church had better take its side.”

Pope Leo, the first American to be named the head of the worldwide Catholic Church, has spoken out against President Donald Trump’s policies frequently this year as the US has invaded Venezuela and Iran and threatened Cuba’s 10 million people with an oil blockade that has crippled the island’s economy and healthcare system—and according to new reports, his criticism has followed a warning from a Pentagon official who demanded the Vatican take the “side” of the White House in foreign disputes.

The Free Press originally reported this week that after the pope’s “State of the World” address on January 9, US Undersecretary of Defense for Policy Elbridge Colby called Cardinal Christophe Pierre, the Vatican’s US diplomatic representative, to Washington.

Colby told Pierre that the US “has the military power to do whatever it wants in the world.”

“The Catholic Church had better take its side,” he said, according to The Free Press.

Another Pentagon official alluded to the Avignon papacy, a period in the 14th century in which the French monarchy ordered an attack on Pope Boniface VIII and forced seven successive popes to relocate from Rome to Avignon in France.

According to Christopher Hale of the Substack blog Letters From Leo, who independently confirmed the meeting had taken place, Vatican officials took the remarks about the Avignon papacy as “a threat to use military force against the Holy See.”

“Bringing up the Avignon papacy as a threat is truly insane,” said progressive organizer Jonathan Cohn.

The pope is unlikely to visit the US during Trump’s presidency as a result of the meeting, Hale reported. Pope Leo rejected an invitation to the White House for the United States’ 250th anniversary celebration on July 4, and is reportedly planning to visit the island of Lampedusa in the Mediterranean that day, where thousands of North African immigrants have arrived as they attempt to reach Europe.

The pope, reported Hale, “is too deliberate a man to have chosen that date by accident.”

The Pentagon meeting took place days after Pope Leo angered the Trump administration, including Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, by lamenting the fact that “a diplomacy that promotes dialogue and seeks consensus among all parties is being replaced by a diplomacy based on force, by either individuals or groups of allies.”

He made the comments days after the US invaded Venezuela, killing dozens of people and abducting President Nicolás Maduro, and as the US continued its boat bombing campaign that began last year in Latin America.

Since then, the pope has made numerous statements in recent weeks as the US joined Israel in bombing Iran and Trump issued increasingly bellicose threats to attack the country’s population of 93 million people.

He said on Tuesday, hours before a two-week ceasefire was reached between the US, Iran, and Israel, that Trump’s threat to wipe out the “whole civilization” of Iran was “truly unacceptable.”

“There are certainly issues of international law here, but even more, it is a moral question concerning the good of the people as a whole, in its entirety,” said Pope Leo. “Let’s look for solutions in a peaceful way.”

He also appeared to reject a call from Hegseth last month when the defense secretary asked Americans to pray for US troops in Iran “in the name of Jesus Christ.”

“Brothers and sisters, this is our God: Jesus, King of Peace, who rejects war, whom no one can use to justify war,” said the Pope in his homily on Palm Sunday days later. “He does not listen to the prayers of those who wage war, but rejects them, saying: ‘Even though you make many prayers, I will not listen: your hands are full of blood.’”

The New Republic reported that prior to the January meeting Pierre was called to, there were no public records of meetings between the Vatican and Pentagon officials, “let alone an instance in which the world power suggested that it could force the Bishop of Rome into captivity.”

When asked about the meeting on Wednesday, Vice President JD Vance—a Catholic convert—at first claimed not to know who the Vatican’s US representative was, before saying the reported was “uncorroborated.”

The Defense Department also denied The Free Press’ account of the meeting, saying the characterization was “highly exaggerated and distorted.”

Writer Pedro Gonzalez noted that former Trump adviser Steve Bannon discussed strategies to “take down” the late Pope Frances with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, according to files on Epstein that were released by the Department of Justice.

“It is for this and other reasons that people take seriously the report about the Trump-Vance administration threatening Pope Leo to bend the knee or else,” said Gonzalez. “These people are insane. Their hunger for power is bottomless. Moral resistance will be met with intimidation and threats, whether it’s in America or in Rome.”

Over 100 MPs call on PM to oppose Trump’s oil blockade on Cuba

MORE than 100 MPs have voiced “grave concern” over Donald Trump’s Cuba oil blockade, calling on PM Sir Keir Starmer to oppose the US president’s “collective punishment” of its civilian population.

Ministers were urged to reject Washington’s threat to slap tariffs on any other country that ships fuel to the island after it kidnapped Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro in January.

The US has blocked Venezuelan oil supplies to Cuba’s socialist government, which said last week that it had not received any fuel in three months.

Your Party leader Jeremy Corbyn, Labour, SNP, Plaid Cymru, Green, SDLP, and Lib Dem MPs have now signed an early day motion by Labour MP for Montgomeryshire and Glyndwr Steve Witherden.

Mr Corbyn told the Morning Star: “The aim of the criminal and inhumane blockade by the US is clear: to starve the Cuban people into submission. They will not succeed.

“As much as the United States would wish otherwise, Cuba is not alone.”

They collectively called on the government to reject the “unjustifiable” sanctions and US claims that Cuba poses an “extraordinary” threat.

Socialist MP Richard Burgon, who was in Cuba this weekend delivering humanitarian aid with an international delegation, said: “In Cuba I saw the cruel consequences of Trump’s total ban on fuel entering the country, including its impact on the ability to provide healthcare to those in need.

“Cutting off fuel to an entire country is an inhumane attempt by Trump to strangle the Cuban people into submission. It is illegal and it’s putting lives at risk.

“The UK rightly votes against the US blockade at the UN each year, but that must now be matched with action. It should follow Spain’s example and provide emergency humanitarian aid.”

Green Party parliamentary leader Dr Ellie Chowns said: “Trump has intensified his threats against Cuba following the collapse of the island nation’s energy grid under a US-imposed oil blockade, declaring just yesterday that he believes he will ‘take’ the country and ‘could do anything [he] want[s] with it. This cannot continue.”

Cuba Solidarity Campaign director Rob Miller said his group is delighted with the number of MPs who have signed the motion, saying: “Together they represent over seven million UK constituents.

“We now hope the UK government will move quickly to send humanitarian support to Cuba, a country with which we have had full diplomatic and friendly relations for over 120 years.”

Cuban President Vows ‘Impregnable Resistance’ to Any Trump Attempt to Seize the Island

“The US publicly threatens Cuba, almost daily, with overthrowing the constitutional order by force,” said Miguel Díaz-Canel.

Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel on Tuesday condemned US President Donald Trump’s open threat to forcibly seize control of the island nation and vowed that any such aggression would be met with “impregnable resistance.”

“The US publicly threatens Cuba, almost daily, with overthrowing the constitutional order by force,” Díaz-Canel wrote on social media. “And it uses an outrageous pretext: the harsh limitations of the weakened economy that they have attacked and sought to isolate for more than six decades.”

‘We Must Stop Him’: Trump Advertises Desire to ‘Take’ Cuba as Oil Embargo Devastates Island

“They intend and announce plans to seize the country, its resources, its properties, and even the very economy they seek to strangle to make us surrender,” the Cuban president added. “Only in this way can the fierce economic war be explained, which is applied as collective punishment against the entire people. In the face of the worst scenario, Cuba is accompanied by a certainty: Any external aggressor will clash with an impregnable resistance.”

Díaz-Canel’s statement came a day after Trump said from the Oval Office of the White House that he believes he will have “the honor of taking Cuba” as it faces a grave humanitarian crisis fueled by the administration’s oil embargo, which began shortly after the US abducted Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro in early January.

“I think I can do anything I want with it,” Trump said of Cuba on Monday.

The New York Times reported earlier this week that Trump administration officials are demanding Díaz-Canel’s ouster as part of any negotiated deal between the two countries.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the son of Cuban immigrants and a longtime supporter of regime change on the island, said publicly on Tuesday that Cuba “has to get new people in charge.” Trump said earlier this month that he’s “going to put Marco over there and we’ll see how that works out.”

YouGov poll out this week shows that more Americans disapprove than approve of the US embargo on Cuba. The same survey found that only 13% of US voters would support attacking Cuba, and a mere 18% would support using military force to overthrow the country’s government.

Trump’s threats came as his oil embargo and the broader, decadeslong, and illegal economic warfare against Cuba continued to take their toll on the island’s population, most recently in the form of an island-wide blackout that lasted nearly 30 hours.

On Wednesday, the first delegation of the Nuestra América Convoy arrived in Havana as part of an effort by individuals and organizations to deliver critical humanitarian aid to the Cuban people as the US besieges the island’s economy and threatens its sovereignty.

Nathan J. Robinson and Alex Skopic, editors of the left-wing magazine Current Affairs, announced Wednesday that they are heading to Cuba to cover the mission, which they characterized as part of a “proud tradition of internationalism” on the American left.

“Beyond food, medicine, and energy infrastructure, this mission sends a message,” Robinson and Skopic wrote. “As Americans, we want to make it crystal clear that the Trump administration does not speak for us when it talks about ‘taking over’ Cuba, and we’re sickened by what Trump and Rubio are doing to the Cuban people in the name of U.S. foreign policy. But we’re determined to do what we can, and we’re going to make sure the people of Cuba do not stand alone.”

UK Government must make clear it will not accept Trump and Netanyahu’s breaches of international law, say Greens

Responding to recent international developments in the Middle East, Latin America and the Caribbean, Dr Ellie Chowns, leader of the Parliamentary Green Party, said:

“Just weeks ago we saw Trump and Netanyahu launch illegal strikes against Iran in the midst of ongoing negotiations, endangering countless civilian lives and dragging the entire surrounding region into chaos. Despite the clear human cost of this flagrant breach of international law, the UK Government did not condemn the initial attacks made by the US and Israel. On the contrary, Keir Starmer has continued to stress Britian’s allyship with these two nations – and in allowing the US to use UK military bases for ‘defensive’ action, has risked dragging the UK further into an illegal war.

“The US and Israel have continuously flouted international law with apparent impunity. Whether concerning Israel’s genocide in Gaza and illegal settlement expansion in the West Bank or the US’s unilateral attacks on Venezuela in the name of oil imperialism, the UK Government has refused to pursue appropriate action against these nations for breaching international law or to re-evaluate their status as allies to Britain.

“This permissiveness has not tempered the two countries. Following the strikes on Iran, Israel has expanded their ground campaign in Lebanon, displacing a million people throughout the country and seemingly preparing for prolonged occupation of southern Lebanon. Trump has intensified his threats against Cuba following the collapse of the island nation’s energy grid under a US-imposed oil blockade, declaring just yesterday that he believes he will ‘take’ the country and ‘could do anything [he] want[s] with it.’

“This cannot continue. The Green Party calls on the UK Government to make clear to Trump and Netanyahu the UK will not accept breaches of international law, to withdraw permission for the US to use UK military bases, and to refuse any further complicity in this illegal war. Furthermore, we reiterate our calls for the UK to halt all arms sales to and military cooperation with the Israeli Government, to drive independent investigations into war crimes committed and support justice mechanisms for victims, and to impose sanctions on government officials responsible for breaches of international law.”
