Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz vowed on Wednesday to continue military offensives in Lebanon, Syria, Gaza and Yemen despite regional and international efforts to de-escalate and restore regional stability, Anadolu reports.

Israel “will continue its operations in Lebanon, Syria, the Gaza Strip and Yemen,” Maariv daily quoted Katz as saying during a training course for Israeli Air Force pilots, attended by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir.

“In Lebanon, we will continue to apply maximum force against Hezbollah; in Syria, Israel will not withdraw from Mount Hermon (Jabal al-Sheikh) and the security zone; and in the Gaza Strip, Israel remains committed to dismantling Hamas and disarming the territory,” he added.

“As for Yemen, Israel will continue its operations to prevent the Houthis from strengthening their capabilities,” he said.

Addressing its conflict with Tehran, Katz claimed that Israel had inflicted “significant damage on Iran’s nuclear and strategic capabilities.”

“I am following reports regarding Iran, which we struck strongly in cooperation with our American partners, and the security establishment is closely monitoring developments. Naturally, I cannot provide further details,” he added.

The Israeli army has launched a brutal offensive in Gaza, killing more than 71,000 people, mostly women and children, and injuring over 171,000 others since October 2023. The assault fueled regional tensions and sparked an exchange of attacks with Hezbollah in Lebanon and Yemen’s Houthis. The Israeli army also launched a 12-day war on Iran in June, which was halted under a US-sponsored ceasefire.

Tel Aviv also staged repeated cross-border raids into Syrian territory and launched airstrikes, killing civilians and destroying Syrian military sites, vehicles, weapons, and ammunition.

Hamas described on Tuesday evening the approval by the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defence Committee of a plan to ban essential services to UNRWA offices as a “serious escalation”.

In a statement, the movement said, “The approval by the so-called Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defence Committee of a plan to cut essential services, including water and electricity, to UNRWA offices is a dangerous escalation. It is part of a systematic criminal campaign to undermine its humanitarian role for the Palestinian people.”

Hamas called on the international community, the United Nations, and its institutions “to take responsibility and put an end to the systematic targeting of UNRWA by Israel, and to force the occupation to reverse its illegal measures against the agency.”

The movement also urged support for UNRWA to continue “its humanitarian mission to serve and assist the refugees of our people, especially amid the unprecedented humanitarian disaster caused by the occupation in Gaza.”

Earlier on Monday, the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defence Committee approved sending a bill to cut water and electricity supplies to a UNRWA offices for a vote.

Hamas has called on Amnesty International to withdraw a report accusing the Palestinian resistance of committing war crimes during the 7 October 2023 operation against the Gaza Division of the Israeli army, describing the findings as misleading, biased and unprofessional.

In a statement published on its official Telegram channel on Thursday, the movement said the report contained “serious inaccuracies” and relied on claims that contradict evidence documented by Palestinian, international and even Israeli human rights organisations.

Hamas rejected Amnesty’s assertion that resistance fighters were responsible for the destruction of hundreds of homes and facilities, saying multiple investigations have shown that Israeli forces destroyed large areas using tanks and air strikes. It also disputed allegations of the killing of civilians, arguing that several reports indicate many civilians were killed by Israeli fire under the so-called “Hannibal Protocol”.

The movement further condemned “Amnesty’s repetition of Israeli government claims regarding rape, sexual violence and the mistreatment of prisoners”. Hamas said these allegations had been refuted by international investigations and accused the organisation of adopting what it called the “narrative of the occupying power”.

“The report repeats unfounded accusations aimed at inciting hostility against the Palestinian resistance and distorting its image, while ignoring the documented crimes of the occupation,” the statement said.

Hamas urged Amnesty International to retract the report and to refrain from, in its words, “colluding with attempts to demonise the Palestinian people or obscure the crimes of the occupation”, which are currently under investigation by the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court on charges including genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity.

The movement also stressed that Israel has prevented international organisations, UN agencies and independent investigation teams from entering Gaza since the early days of the genocide, arguing that this blockade has obstructed fact-finding efforts and undermined the credibility of reports produced without direct access to the territory.

“Any report produced away from the scene of events, without access to witnesses and evidence, is necessarily incomplete and lacks professional integrity,” Hamas added.

Hamas claims responsibility for assassination of Israeli- backed gang leader in Gaza

Yasser Abu Shabab. [Quds Press]

A source close to the Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas, has said that the killing of Yasser Abu Shabab; the Israeli- backed gang leader,  on Thursday was carried out through a carefully planned ambush inside the city of Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip.

According to the source, the operation was executed by a young man from the Abu Shabab clan who pretended he wished to join the armed group led by Abu Shabab. He later carried out the plan with precision, killing the group’s leader along with several of his associates.

The source stated that the ambush came as a complete surprise. Israeli-backed militias in Rafah reportedly expected any attack by the Qassam Brigades to come from above ground, possibly by an elite unit, which would have prompted them to shelter near Israeli tanks. Instead, the infiltration came from within the group itself, allowing the attack to succeed.

He added that the irony was that Abu Shabab had recently appeared in a video declaring his intention to launch a campaign to “cleanse” Rafah, only to be killed days later along with his men in what the source described as “a real cleansing of the city from the gang”.

The source said the operation represents a major breakthrough for the resistance and a significant blow to the Israeli security apparatus, undermining a strategic plan to impose Israeli- backed militia control over parts of Gaza.

Abu Shabab reportedly commanded a group of around 100 fighters who were armed and supported by Israel in eastern Rafah, with the aim of establishing a so-called “safe zone” to serve Israeli interests and weaken the resistance.

According to resistance sources, the group also carried out activities against Palestinians, including searching homes, dismantling explosive devices planted by resistance members, killing fighters, and seizing weapons, all in coordination with the Israeli occupation.

Abu Shabab had previously appeared in a video claiming his group controlled areas “liberated from Hamas” and that it was working with the Palestinian Authority to distribute aid and “protect civilians”. Multiple reports indicated that the group was in fact responsible for the looting of humanitarian aid that had entered the besieged enclave.

Human Rights Group Warns US Gaza Plan Will Impose ‘Unlawful Collective Imprisonment’ of Palestinians as New Details Emerge

“The design of these proposed cities mirrors the historical model of ghettos,” said the Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor, which said the US plans to cram 25,000 people into areas smaller than a square kilometer.

A prominent international human rights organization is warning that the United States’ plan for postwar Gaza will impose “unlawful collective imprisonment” on the Palestinian civilians who have survived two years of genocide.

In November, several news outlets reported on the Trump administration’s plan to carve Gaza in two: a so-called “green zone” controlled by Israel and a “red zone” controlled by the militant group Hamas.

UN Report Details Israel’s ‘De Facto State Policy’ of Torturing Palestinian Prisoners

The US would construct what it called “Alternative Safe Communities” for Palestinians to live in the Israeli-controlled portion of Gaza, which is over half of the territory under the current “ceasefire” agreement.

The New York Times described these communities as “compounds” of 20,000 to 25,000 people, where Israeli officials reportedly argued they should not be allowed to leave.

The initial reporting raised fears that the US and Israel were constructing what would amount to a “concentration camp,” where Palestinians would be forced to live in squalid conditions without freedom of movement.

On Wednesday, the Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor released new details on how Palestinians, currently facing mass displacement from their homes in the portion of the strip not occupied by Israel, would be corralled into the green zone under the US proposal.

The Geneva-based group issued a stark warning about the plan, which it said carried “grave risks, including the effective displacement of Palestinians from their homes and the transformation of large parts of Gaza into closed military zones under the direct control of the Israeli army.”

“Entry and exit would be permitted only through security screening, effectively converting these sites into overcrowded detention camps that impose severe restrictions on residents’ freedom of movement and daily life.”

Euro-Med’s report explains that the transfer of Palestinians would be carried out using “various pressure tactics.”

“This is done by creating a coercive environment in the red zone and making access to relative protection and basic services conditional on relocating to designated areas within the green zone, following extensive security screening and vetting,” the report says. “This removes any genuine element of consent and places the process squarely within the scope of forced displacement prohibited under international humanitarian law.”

It also provides new details on the conditions Palestinians would be subject to once they’ve arrived: “The plan includes the establishment of ‘cities’ of prefabricated container homes (caravans) in the green zone, each housing around 25,000 people within an area of no more than one square kilometer and enclosed by walls and checkpoints.”

This means these Palestinian cantons would be over three times as densely populated as the Tel Aviv District, the most crowded in Israel, which has about 8,130 people per square kilometer.

“Entry and exit would be permitted only through security screening, effectively converting these sites into overcrowded detention camps that impose severe restrictions on residents’ freedom of movement and daily life,” the report continues.

This is not the first proposal to use the promise of safety to lure Palestinians into an enclosed space without the right to leave.

Earlier this year, following US President Donald Trump’s call for the people of Palestine to be forcibly removed from the Gaza Strip, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz proposed the creation of a massive “humanitarian city” built on the ruins of Rafah that would be used as part of an “emigration plan” for hundreds of thousands of displaced people.

Under that plan, Palestinians would have been given “security screenings” and once inside would not be allowed to leave. Humanitarian organizations, including those inside Israel, roundly condemned the plan as essentially a “concentration camp.”

Euro-Med said that the design laid out in the new US plan “mirrors the historical model of ghettos, in which colonial and racist regimes confined specific groups to sealed areas surrounded by walls and guard posts, with movement and resources controlled externally, as seen in Europe during World War II and in other colonial contexts.”
