“They knew this stuff was going to happen and are sending people back anyway.”

    “Deportation is a life-or-death matter.”

That was one immigration attorney’s response to the news this week that a couple who had lived in the St. Louis suburb of Overland, Missouri was found fatally shot in a sugarcane field near Retalhuleu, Guatemala, after the husband, Nixon Giovanni Pérez Paz, was deported there last year.

The couple’s 14-month-old baby, Giovanni, was found crying next to the body of Pérez Paz’s wife, Glendy Marisol González de la Cruz.

Pérez Paz, 43, and González de la Cruz, 25, showed signs of physical trauma and had apparently been bound and gagged before being killed. Police in Guatemala, where officials declared a state of emergency earlier this year over gang violence, are investigating the killings. Reuters reported that murders have spiked in the Central American country over the past week, with the government blaming organized crime.

In the US, observers including US Rep. Seth Moulton (D-Mass.) directed anger at the Trump administration, which has overseen a mass deportation campaign in which roughly 28,000 people were deported to Guatemala in the first six months of 2026, while hundreds of thousands more have been sent to other countries, including ones where they may face persecution, violence, and other security concerns.

“This is not immigration enforcement,” said Moulton of President Donald Trump’s deportation of Pérez Paz. “This is a body count. And every member of Congress and Senate enabling MAGA’s mass deportation police state owns it too.”

According to St. Louis Public Radio, Pérez Paz and his brother were stopped by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in Overland as they were driving to their roofing jobs. The two brothers were “swarmed” by agents before being handcuffed and shackled and taken to a local jail.

The agents told them they had no warrant for their arrest, but that they were being deported for entering the country without authorization.

Pérez Paz’s brother, Rolando Pérez Paz, told St. Louis Public Radio from Guatemala, where he was also deported, that they did not have legal status in the US and had fled poverty and violence in their home country.

A spokesperson for ICE told the outlet that Pérez Paz had been convicted twice for drunk driving in Overland and had a 2010 open-container charge in Palm Beach, Florida, which had been dropped by prosecutors. No records were found in Missouri’s court database to support the claim about the drunk driving conviction.

Court records show Pérez Paz had pleaded guilty to driving without a valid driver’s license in May 2024 and had paid a fine for the traffic violation.

“This isn’t due process,” said Moulton. “This isn’t deporting the worst of the worst or whatever lies MAGA campaigned on.”

González de la Cruz was pregnant when Pérez Paz was deported and remained in Overland, giving birth to Giovanni in June 2025; they also had two older daughters. She eventually returned to Guatemala to reunite the family after financial struggles and fears of deportation mounted, according to a local immigrant rights group called Missouri Workers Center Fuerza—even though she had a court date set for 2027 for her asylum case.

“Glendy came to our Fuerza meetings three weeks after giving birth. She was working two jobs, bringing new members, showing up—even as her world was being torn apart,” said the group in a Facebook post inviting community members to a candlelight vigil for the couple on August 2. “The cruelty of this administration meant her husband could not be by her side for the birth.”

The couple was reported missing on July 20 after leaving their home to register a motorcycle. They had faced “several months of struggles with financial hardships, run-ins with the federal government, and violence” before their deaths.

Reuters reported that a red striped motorcycle was found at the scene outside Retalhuleu. Their children are in the custody of Pérez Paz’s brother.

“They knew this stuff was going to happen and are sending people back anyway,” said one St. Louis resident of the Trump administration’s mass deportation campaign.

The deaths were reported as the White House directed ICE to ramp up operations targeting Haitians; Temporary Protected Status expired for Haitian refugees this week following a Supreme Court ruling last month. Hundreds of people could be forced onto deportation flights to the poverty-stricken country each week, according to the director-general of Haiti’s National Office of Migration. Like Guatemala, Haiti faces a crisis of violence by armed gangs.

“ICE appears to have lied yet again about killing someone,” said one immigration expert.

The controversy surrounding the killing of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo by federal immigration enforcement officials is growing amid new reports that the Trump administration is trying to deport three witnesses to the the fatal shooting.

Juan Proaño, CEO of the League of United Latin American Citizens, said in a Thursday interview with The New Republic that the witnesses, all undocumented immigrants who were detained by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials after the shooting, are “being pressured to sign self-deportation orders.”

“They’re currently in detention,” said Proaño, who is serving as a representative for Salgado Araujo’s family. “These men hold the key to what actually happened.”

Salgado Araujo, a 52-year-old Mexican national who ran a small construction business and had been living in the US for more than three decades, was pulled over by ICE officers in unmarked vehicles on Tuesday morning.

ICE officers claimed that Salgado Araujo, who was driving to work along with three coworkers, tried to evade arrest by ramming his car into them.

Purportedly fearing for his life, one ICE agent opened fire on Salgado Araujo and killed him, the officers said.

However, The Washington Post reported on Friday that all three men who were in the car with Salgado Araujo are strongly disputing the ICE agents’ account of the deadly incident.

In fact, all three witnesses said that the ICE officer involved in the shooting opened fire immediately after exiting his vehicle, and that Salgado Araujo did not try to drive into him.

Detainee Jose Trinidad Rojas, 51, in a hand-written statement obtained by the Post through attorney Hugo Balderas-Ibarra, bluntly contradicted the ICE officers’ claims.

“That is a lie,” Trinidad Rojas wrote. “It is impossible for them to say that they were going to get run over … there were no officers in front of or behind the vehicle. They were on the sides.”

Balderas-Ibarra told the Post that he interviewed the other two men in the car, who both gave the same account.

“All of them reiterated that there were never any ICE agents in front of the van,” Balderas-Ibarra said. “They came in and started shooting from the sides.”

David Bier, director of immigration studies at the libertarian Cato Institute, said in a Friday social media post that the Post’s reporting seems to show “ICE appears to have lied yet again about killing someone.”

“Unbelievable,” he added, “but actually totally believable given that they lie about events fully captured on video.”

In a separate post, Bier examined a video of the shooting scene and noted that there appeared to be no damage to the front of Salgado Araujo’s van, even as ICE claimed Salgado Araujo had tried to use it as a weapon against them.

“These people are not credible,” Bier remarked.

Aaron Reichlin-Melnick, senior fellow at the American Immigration Council, pointed out that all three witnesses to the shooting were telling the same stories even though they were being detained separately, which he said bolsters their credibility.

“When you add the videos showing a lack of evidence of damage to the front despite ICE’s ramming claim,” Aaron Reichlin-Melnick added, “ICE’s story is falling apart.”

“No work, no school, no shopping. We’re going to show up and say we’re putting workers over billionaires and kings.”

Ezra Levin, co-founder of Indivisible, said on Saturday that a nationwide general strike is being planned for May 1 that will be modeled on the day of action residents of Minnesota organized in January against the brutality carried out by federal immigration enforcement officials.

Appearing at the flagship No Kings rally in Minneapolis, Levin praised the strength shown by the Minnesota protesters in the face of the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) siege of their city this year, and said his organization wanted to replicate it across the country.

“The next major national action of this movement is not just going to be another protest,” Levin said. “It is a tactical escalation… It is an economic show of force, inspired by Minnesota’s own day of truth and action.”

Levin then outlined what the event would entail.

“On May 1, on May Day, we are saying, ‘No business as usual,’” he said. “No work, no school, no shopping. We’re going to show up and say we’re putting workers over billionaires and kings.”

Levin added that “we are going to build on that courage, that sacrifice” that Minnesota residents showed during their day of action in January, and vowed “to demonstrate that regular people are the greatest threat to fascism in this country.”

In an interview with Payday Report published Saturday, Indivisible co-founder Leah Greenberg said that the goal of the nationwide strike action would be to send “a clear message: we demand a government that invests in our communities, not one that enriches billionaires, fuels endless war, or deploys masked agents to intimidate our neighbors.”

The No Kings protests against President Donald Trump’s authoritarian government, which Indivisible has been central in organizing, have brought millions of Americans into the streets.

Polling analyst G. Elliott Morris estimated that the previous No Kings event, held in October, drew at least 5 million people nationwide, making it likely “the largest single-day political protest ever.”

  • Yet Another Case of ICE Agents—and DHS Officials—Lying About Shooting Incident Emerges

“This agency cannot continue to exist,” said Rep. Rob Menendez of ICE.

Two US immigration enforcement officers are now under federal investigation after it was revealed that they seem to have lied about the circumstances that led up to the shooting of a Venezuelan immigrant last month.

As reported by Politico on Friday, US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Acting Director Todd Lyons acknowledged that two federal officers appear “to have made untruthful statements” about a confrontation in Minneapolis in January that culminated in one of the officers shooting Venezuelan national Julio Cesar Sosa-Celis in the leg.

The officers claimed that Sosa-Celis and another Venezuelan immigrant, Alfredo Aljorna, assaulted them with a broom and a shovel, which forced one of the officers to open fire in self-defense.

While the two men had been charged with assaulting the officers in the wake of the shooting, charges against them were abruptly dismissed on Thursday when prosecutors revealed that “newly discovered evidence in this matter is materially inconsistent with the allegations” made under oath by the officers.

Lyons said that the US Department of Justice (DOJ) is now investigating the two officers, who have been placed on administrative leave until the probe concludes.

US Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem last month defended the officers and parroted their claims about the shooting.

“What we saw last night in Minneapolis was an attempted murder of federal law enforcement,” Noem claimed. “Our officer was ambushed and attacked by three individuals who beat him with snow shovels and the handles of brooms. Fearing for his life, the officer fired a defensive shot.”

Noem has come under fire in recent weeks for lying about shootings involving federal immigration officials, such as when she falsely claimed that slain Minneapolis intensive care nurse Alex Pretti was aiming “to inflict maximum damage on individuals and to kill law enforcement” while filming officers’ activities.

In reality, video footage showed Pretti never drew his handgun during his deadly confrontation with federal immigration officers, while also clearly showing that officers disarmed him before they opened fire.

Aaron Reichlin-Melnick, senior fellow at the American Immigration Council, said that the newly uncovered evidence in Sosa-Celis’ case showed that the officer not only didn’t discharge his weapon in self-defense, but he “fired his gun through a closed door, striking the people inside.”

The Minnesota House of Representatives Democratic-Farmer-Labor (DFL) Caucus accused federal immigration agents of systematically lying to cover up unjustified shootings.

“They’re hiding evidence, stifling investigations, and fabricating information,” wrote the Minnesota House DFL on social media. “They’re lying to your face. We won’t let them get away with it—Minnesotans deserve justice.”

US Rep. Rob Menedez (D-NJ) said that lying appears to be endemic in the entire Trump administration.

“The Trump administration has consistently lied about ICE’s violent acts toward Americans and the abuses that this agency perpetuates every day,” he wrote. “They aren’t afraid to lie about members of Congress, and they certainly aren’t afraid to lie about any American they have killed, shot, or assaulted. This agency cannot continue to exist.”

  • Amid Secretive Expansion, Leaked Docs Reveal Locations of New ICE Facilities Nationwide

Many new facilities will be located near schools, hospitals, and places of worship such as churches and mosques.

Leaked documents obtained by Wired show that federal immigration enforcement operations in the US appear set to expand even more significantly in the coming years.

Overall, Wired reported on Tuesday, the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS)—which includes Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)—has been aggressively expanding its footprint across the country, with “more than 150 leases and office expansions” that “have or would place new facilities in nearly every state, many of them in or just outside of the country’s largest metropolitan areas.”

Many of these new facilities are near sensitive locations that ICE has targeted in its immigrant abduction campaigns, including schools, hospitals, and places of worship such as churches and mosques.

For example, records show ICE is planning to occupy an office building just blocks away from a preschool in Houston, Texas, and to move into offices in Irvine, California located near a childcare facility.

To speed up this rapid expansion, DHS has been leaning on the Government Services Administration to write off standard lease procurement procedures and to even conceal lease listings in the name of “national security concerns.”

Taken as a whole, Wired found that “ICE agents and officers will share buildings with doctors, restaurants, and businesses,” and will “expand existing offices and move in with unrelated government agencies,” such as in Philadelphia, where they are set to share space with the local Division of Motor Vehicles.

“The leasing plans give a clear picture of 2” the report concluded.

The leaked plans about ICE’s aggressive expansion come as immigrants being held in ICE detention centers give disturbing accounts of conditions at facilities.

Seamus Culleton, an Irish citizen who has been held at a Texas ICE detention center for five months despite having a valid US work permit and no criminal record, told Ireland’s RTÉ that the facility is akin to a “modern-day concentration camp.”

“It’s a bunch of temporary tents,” he explained. “There’s a room for, probably, a thousand detainees in each tent… I’ve been locked in the same room now for four-and-a-half months. I’ve had barely any outside time, no fresh air, no sunshine. I can probably count on both hands the number of times I’ve been outside. So I’m just locked inside this room all day, every day.”

Culleton also said that the facilities were “filthy,” with toilets and showers being “completely nasty.”

On Monday, ProPublica published letters that children detained at an immigration center in Dilley, Texas had written while they were being held with their parents.

Ender, a 12-year-old from Venezuela who has been detained in Dilley for over two months, complained about people getting inadequate medical care at the facility.

“Going to the doctor and… the only thing they tell you is to drink more water,” Ender wrote in his letter. “And the worst thing is that it seems the water is what makes people sick here.”

Ariana, a 14-year-old from Honduras who has been at the facility for a month-and-a-half, used her letter to explain the mental toll the detention has taken.

“Since I got to this Center all you will feel is sadness and mostly depression,” explained Ariana, who added that children being held at the facility are “being damage (sic) mentally, they witness how the’ve been treated.”
