    The shooting took place a day after tens of thousands of people took to the streets in Minneapolis in the freezing cold to demand an end to President Donald Trump’s mass deportation operation.

    Federal agents repeatedly tear-gassed a crowd of protesters that gathered near the site of the shooting. They also deployed pepper spray, including at a man who “either dropped or threw his sunglasses, which landed on the ground” as he was backing away from the officers. At least two flash-bang grenades were heard going off, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reported.

    The outlet reported that “several witnesses” had been “transported to the Whipple building,” a federal building where immigration agents have been working and which houses a detention center.

    The Star Tribune also reported that “ICE attempted to order local police from the scene” but Police Chief Brian O’Hara refused and ordered his officers to preserve the crime scene.

    Update (12:15 pm ET):

    Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara reported that the victim of the shooting was killed.

    The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) reported that the man was armed with a firearm and two magazines.

    Fox News correspondent Bill Melugin posted a photo on social media of a firearm, saying that DHS had told the outlet federal agents had recovered the gun.

    DHS said the man “approached US Border Patrol officers with a 9mm semi-automatic handgun… The officers attempted to disarm the suspect but the armed suspect violently resisted. More details on the armed struggle are forthcoming. Fearing for his life and the lives and safety of fellow officers, an agent fired defensive shots.”

    Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty said in a statement that her office was working with the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, which was blocked from the investigation into the fatal shooting of Renee Good by an ICE agent.

    “The scene must be secured by local law enforcement for the collection and preservation of evidence,” Moriarty said. “We expect the federal government to allow the BCA to process the scene.”

    Earlier:

    Federal immigration agents reportedly shot another person in Minneapolis Saturday morning.

    Local and federal officials were among those reporting the shooting on social media, where a video taken from inside Glam Doll Donuts at 26th Street and Nicollet Avenue showed several agents beating a person on a sidewalk.

    David J. Bier of the Cato Institute posted a video of another angle of the shooting, from the Minnesota outlet Bring Me the News.

    Whistles were heard outside in the video as observers inside the store expressed shock at the beating, which happened weeks after a US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent fatally shot Renee Good, and 10 days after an immigration officer shot a Venezuelan man in the leg during an enforcement operation.

    “They’re doing too much, man,” one man was heard saying as the agents surrounded the person.

    The person appeared to be trying to get up when an agent shot them.

    “Oh shit,” another observer in the store said. “Did they fucking kill that guy?”

    The person’s condition and details about what had occurred before the encounter was filmed were not immediately reported.

    Around 100 protesters gathered at the site of the shooting soon after, chanting anti-ICE slogans, having learned about the incident through neighborhood rapid response networks set up across the city.

    Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, a Democrat, called the incident “sickening” and repeated a demand for President Donald Trump to end his deployment of armed, masked federal agents in the state.

    The shooting took place a day after tens of thousands of people filled Minneapolis’ streets demanding an end to Trump’s mass deportation operation.

    “We are a northern state, and we are built for the cold, and we are going to show up.”

    Twin Cities residents are weeks into the Trump administration’s deployment of thousands of federal immigration agents in an operation that has seen a legal observer and young mother fatally shot; US citizens dragged out of their homes and vehicles by masked officers; one of President Donald Trump’s top Border Patrol officials lobbing a gas grenade at lawful protesters; children as young as 2 detained; and armed agents seemingly lurking around every corner.

    But the trauma inflicted on the cities during “Operation Metro Surge” appeared only to have strengthened residents’ resolve to push US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) out of Minnesota on Friday as residents filled the Minneapolis’ downtown area to march in subfreezing temperatures and assembled at a nearby airport through which an estimated 2,000 people have been deported.

    Minneapolis Labor, Community Leaders Join Call for Jan. 23 General Strike to Demand ICE Out

    The demonstrations were part of a “no work, no school, no shopping” general strike that labor, faith, and community leaders and businesses have joined in calling for in recent days as outrage has grown over ICE’s arrests of immigrants and citizens alike and attacks on residents’ First Amendment rights.

    Demonstrators carried signs reading, “ICE Out Now,” “Stop Pretending Racism Is Patriotism,” and “Stop Disappearing Our Neighbors.”

    Businesses and cultural institutions were closed in solidarity across the city and the state on Friday; Truthout reported that about 700 businesses shut their doors across Minnesota, while businesses that remained open planned to donate their proceeds from the day to immigrant rights groups.

    Organizers said about 100 clergy members were arrested at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport protest. They were among the protesters who blocked the road at a departures terminal, singing, “Before this campaign fails, we’ll all go down to jail, everybody has a right to live.”

    According to union leaders, 12 airport workers are among the Minneapolis-area residents who have been detained by ICE in recent weeks.

    Chelsie Glaubitz Gabiou, president of the Minnesota Regional Labor Federation (MRLF), AFL-CIO, acknowledged that the weather on Friday was “dangerously cold.”

    “Negative-10°F with wind chills. Like the high is going to be -10°F with wind chills of up to -20F,” Glaubitz Gabiou told the Guardian. “We are a northern state, and we are built for the cold, and we are going to show up.”

    Organizers said the goals of the general strike were for ICE to leave Minnesota, the ICE agent who killed Renee Good earlier this month to be held legally accountable, and no additional federal funding for ICE operations.

    Seven US House Democrats joined the Republican Party in passing a funding bill for the Department of Homeland Security this week. The legislation still needs to get through the Senate.

    Nationwide, data has shown that nearly three-quarters of people arrested by ICE have had no criminal convictions, but the Trump administration has continued to claim it is detaining the “worst of the worst” violent criminals, even as agents have clearly been shown arresting people who are authorized to be in the US and have no criminal records.

  • Investigation Demanded as ICE Reports Third Death at Texas Detention Center in 44 Days

    “This is the third person who has died in the $1.24 billion privately-run facility that focuses on profits instead of meeting basic standards,” said one lawmaker.

    Officials in both Texas and Minnesota are calling for accountability and a full investigation into conditions at Camp East Montana, the sprawling detention complex at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas, following the third reported death at the facility in less than two months.

    Victor Manuel Diaz, 36, was detained by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers in Minneapolis, where ICE has been carrying out violent immigration arrests, cracking down on dissent, and where one officer fatally shot a legal observer earlier this month.

    He was one of roughly 2,903 detainees being held at Camp East Montana at Fort Bliss US Army base, one of the largest ICE detention centers in the country, on January 14 when contract security workers found him “unconscious and unresponsive” in his cell.

    He was later pronounced dead and ICE released a statement saying he had died of “presumed suicide,” but officials arre still investigating his cause of death.

    Diaz’s death comes days after it was reported that a medical examiner in Texas was planning to classify another death reported at Camp East Montana—that of Geraldo Lunas Campos—as a homicide.

    A doctor said Lunas Campos’ preliminary cause of death in early January was “asphyxia due to neck and chest compression.” An eyewitness said he had seen several guards in a struggle with the 55-year-old Cuban immigrant and then saw guards choking Lunas Campos.

    A month prior of Lunas Campos’ death, 49-year-old Guatemalan immigrant Francisco Gaspar-Andres died at a nearby hospital; he was a detainee at Camp East Montana. ICE said medical staff attributed his death to “natural liver and kidney failure.”

    Minnesota Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan called for a “complete and transparent investigation” into what happened to Diaz after his death was announced Sunday.

    “We deserve answers,” said Flanagan.

    US Rep. Veronica Escobar (D-Texas), who last year expressed concern about the US government’s deal with a small private business, Acquisition Logistics LLC, to run Camp East Montana, said the detention center “must be shut down immediately,” warning that “two deaths in one month means conditions are worsening.”

    After the administration awarded a $1.2 billion contract to Acquisition Logistics to build and operate the camp, lawmakers and legal experts raised questions about the decision, considering the small company had no listed experience running detention centers, its headquarters was listed as a Virginia residential address, and the president and CEO of the company did not respond to media inquiries.

    “It’s far too easy for standards to slip,” Escobar told PBS Newshour after touring the facility. “Private facilities far too frequently operate with a profit margin in mind as opposed to a governmental facility.”

    In September, ICE’s own inspectors found at least 60 violations of federal standards, with employees failing to treat and monitor detainees’ medical conditions and the center lacking safety procedures and methods for detainees to contact their lawyers.

    Across all of ICE’s detention facilities, 2025 was the deadliest year for immigrant detainees in more than two decades, with 32 people dying in the agency’s centers.

    After Diaz’s death was reported Sunday, former National Nurses United communications adviser Charles Idelson said that “ICE detention centers are functioning like death camps.”

    “This is an important preliminary win for all Minnesotans exercising their constitutional right to peaceful protest and witness,” state Attorney General Keith Ellison said.

    Federal officers cannot retaliate against, detain, or attack people who are peacefully protesting and observing immigration enforcement operations in the Minneapolis area, a federal judge ruled on Friday.

    The ruling comes a little more than a week after Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent Jonathan Ross shot and killed legal observer Renee Nicole Good, supercharging protests against an immigration enforcement operation in the Twin Cities that the Department of Homeland Security claims is its largest ever.

    “This is an important preliminary win for all Minnesotans exercising their constitutional right to peaceful protest and witness,” Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison wrote on social media in response to the ruling. “Thanks and congratulations to the ACLU and the plaintiffs for standing strong for this bedrock principle.”

    The ruling was issued by Biden appointee and US District Judge Kate Menendez, who is based in Minneapolis. It restricts federal officers involved in “Operation Metro Surge”—an immigration-enforcement blitz in the Minneapolis area—from retaliating against, arresting or detaining, or targeting with nonlethal munitions such as pepper spray anyone “engaging in peaceful and unobstructive protest activity,” including observing ICE operations.

    “We are relieved that in Tincher v. Noem et al. the court has issued a preliminary injunction. The ACLU-MN is hopeful that it will prevent further First Amendment violations like the ones that have been harming Minnesotans since the start of ‘Operation Metro Surge.’”

    Menendez further stipulated that people could not be detained for following ICE and other immigration enforcers with their vehicles if they were not interfering with the agents.

    “The act of safely following Covered Federal Agents at an appropriate distance does not, by itself, create reasonable suspicion to justify a vehicle stop,” Menendez said.

    The ruling is a preliminary injunction in response to Tincher v. Noem et al., a lawsuit brought by the American Civil Liberties Union of Minnesota (ACLU-MN) in December 2025 on behalf of six community members who said their constitutional rights were violated by ICE in response to their protests.

    Plaintiff Susan Tincher, for example, wrote that she was arrested merely for driving to the place where an ICE operation was taking place.

    “I was on a public street,” Tincher in a statement. “I did not cross any lines. I did not interfere with anything. I did not disobey an order. I asked a single question–’are you ICE?’–and almost immediately, officers rushed me, grabbed me, and slammed me face-first into the snow.”

    Since the lawsuit was filed, ICE activity in the Twin Cities continued to escalate, culminating with an influx of 2,000 agents on January 6 and the shooting of Good the next day.

    On January 8, the day after Good’s murder, the plaintiffs’ lawyers sent an emergency letter to the judge urging action.

    “Thousands of peaceful observers and protesters turned out in the streets of the Twin Cities in the wake of Ms. Good’s murder,” the letter reads in part. “Peaceful observers and protesters turned out again today, they will turn out again tomorrow, and they will continue turning out every day until Operation Metro Surge is over. These Minnesotans who are peacefully exercising their core constitutional rights to speak and gather continue to be met with unconstitutional and terrifying violence at the hands of federal agents on a daily basis, including unwarranted pepper spraying and unfounded arrests… And things appear to be getting worse, not better: Even more federal agents are being deployed to Minnesota at this very moment.”

    The ACLU-MN applauded the fact that Menendez had moved to restrain ICE.

    “We are relieved that in Tincher v. Noem et al. the court has issued a preliminary injunction. The ACLU-MN is hopeful that it will prevent further First Amendment violations like the ones that have been harming Minnesotans since the start of ‘Operation Metro Surge,’” the group wrote on social media.

    Beyond Good’s killing, the ruling follows several other high-profile incidents of ICE violence in Minnesota, including a nonlethal shooting of a man at a traffic stop and the hospitalization of three children after ICE tear-gassed the van they were driving in.

    Menendez’s decision came the same day that news broke that President Donald Trump’s Department of Justice was investigating local leaders who had criticized ICE activity, including Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey.

  • ‘Get ICE Out!’ Protests Intensify After Another Shooting by Federal Agent in Minneapolis

    “This is a military occupation,” said the president of the Minneapolis City Council, “and it feels like a military occupation.”

    Protests against the presence of Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in Minneapolis intensified late Wednesday after a federal officer shot and wounded a man during a traffic stop.

    “Get ICE out of the city!” one resident told Status Coup News as federal agents responded forcefully to demonstrations against their abuses, firing flash bang grenades and chemical munitions at protesters.

    The latest shooting occurred in north Minneapolis during what the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) called a “targeted traffic stop.” DHS, which has lied repeatedly about the circumstances of ICE-involved shootings in recent days, said in a statement that the latest shooting victim had attempted to evade arrest and hit the pursuing officer “with a shovel or a broomstick.”

    The agent shot the man in the leg, and both were later taken to the hospital.

    Minneapolis officials responded with outrage to the shooting, which came a week after ICE agent Jonathan Ross shot and killed 37-year-old Renee Good.

    Jacob Frey, the city’s Democratic mayor, said that “no matter what led up to this incident, the situation we are seeing in our city is not sustainable.”

    “This is already the second shooting that we’ve had in a week,” Frey said during a press conference late Wednesday. “People are scared. The atmosphere is tense. But again, there is another option. We can stop going down this route together.”

    The Trump administration has only added fuel to the fire, further expanding the presence of federal agents in Minnesota and attacking the state’s officials and residents with increasingly belligerent rhetoric. President Donald Trump wrote on social media earlier this week that “reckoning and retribution is coming” to Minnesota.

    Wednesday’s shooting came as ICE agents, often heavily armed and wearing combat gear, continued terrorizing communities in Minneapolis and across the United States, with many incidents captured on video. Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz said Wednesday that “armed, masked, undertrained ICE agents are going door to door ordering people to point out where their neighbors of color live.”

    “At grocery stores, at bus stops, even at our schools, they’re breaking windows, dragging pregnant women down the street, just plain grabbing Minnesotans and shoving them into unmarked vans, kidnapping innocent people with no warning and no due process,” Walz continued.

    Minneapolis City Council President Elliott Payne said Wednesday that he was assaulted by ICE officers while lawfully observing them. Payne noted in an interview with the New York Times that ICE agents frequently brandish their weapons to threaten residents.

    “This is a military occupation,” said Payne, “and it feels like a military occupation.”
