A group of Democratic lawmakers on Tuesday demanded the termination of US Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, as new footage emerged in Minneapolis of federal immigration officers drawing guns on unarmed observers.
More than a dozen Democrats serving in the US House of Representatives stood outside the Washington, DC headquarters of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on Tuesday and demanded that President Donald Trump fire Noem, who has taken heat for making false claims in recent weeks about Minneapolis residents Renee Good and Alex Pretti, both of whom were gunned down by federal agents last month.

Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) delivered a brief speech at the event where she described her home city of Minneapolis as being under “occupation” by federal agents sent by Trump and Noem.
“We do not exaggerate when we say we have schools where two-thirds of the students are afraid to go to school,” she said. “We do not exaggerate when we say we have people who are afraid to go to the hospital because our hospitals have occupying paramilitary forces. We do not exaggerate when we say our restaurants are shutting down because there are not enough people to drive the employees to work and from work.”
Omar went on to reiterate her past calls to abolish ICE, which she described as “not just rogue, but unlawful.” She also said that “Democrats are ready and willing to impeach” Noem if Trump doesn’t fire her.

Later in the event, Rep. Joaquin Castro (D-Texas) spoke of his meeting last week with Liam Ramos, a 5-year-old boy from Minneapolis who had been detained at a Texas ICE facility before a judge last weekend ordered his release.
“While detained, he became lethargic and sick,” Castro said, speaking of Ramos. “His father said that he’d become depressed. He was asking about his mother and his classmates, and most of all, he wanted to go home. But he also said that he was scared of the guards… he had clearly been traumatized.”
Castro emphasized that, even though Ramos and his father have been freed from detention, there are still too many children being held at the facility, including at least one as young as two years old
“This is a machinery of cruelty and viciousness that Secretary Noem has overseen, the Trump administration has built, and people like Texas Gov. Greg Abbott have been complicit in upholding,” he said. “We must not allow ICE to kidnap children and bring them to prisons where they profit off their pain, misery, and suffering.”
As Democrats were making their case for Noem’s removal, new footage emerged of federal immigration officers in Minneapolis pulling legal observers out of their cars at gun point.
In a video posted on social media by independent journalist Ford Fischer, agents can be seen swarming a vehicle with their guns drawn and demanding and its passengers exit the car.

After the observers were pulled from the vehicle and detained by officers on the scene, one officer in the video claims that the people in question had been threatening them with “hand guns.”
An observer then asks the officer if he means that the people being taken into custody were waving firearms at them, and he replies that they were making fake guns with their fingers, not brandishing actual weapons.
As the officers left the scene, they were heckled by protesters.
“Put away your weapons you douchebag, nobody is threatening you!” yelled one.

‘You Have Lost All Legitimacy’: Portland Mayor Demands ICE Leave City After Tear Gassing Kids

The mayor of Portland, Oregon demanded that federal immigration enforcement officials leave his city after they were seen lobbing tear gas and flash bang grenades at demonstrators.
As reported by The Oregonian on Sunday, Portland Mayor Keith Wilson reacted with outrage after seeing federal agents deploying tear gas and firing rubber bullets at thousands of protesters who on Saturday marched to a US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in the city’s South Waterfront neighborhood.

Wilson called the agents’ attacks on protesters a vast overreaction to a “peaceful daytime protest, where the vast majority of those present violated no laws, made no threat, and posed no danger to federal forces” stationed at the facility.
“To those who continue to work for ICE: Resign. To those who control this facility: Leave,” Wilson said. “Through your use of violence and the trampling of the Constitution, you have lost all legitimacy and replaced it with shame.”
The mayor also heaped scorn on federal agents for employing such tactics when several children were present in the crowd.
“To those who continue to make these sickening decisions, go home, look in a mirror, and ask yourselves why you have gassed children,” he said. “Ask yourselves why you continue to work for an agency responsible for murders on American streets. No one is forcing you to lie to yourself, even as your bosses continue to lie to the American people.”
Erin Hoover Barnett, a former Oregonian reporter who attended the demonstration, told the paper that she saw “what looked like two guys with rocket launchers” who started dousing the crowd with tear gas on Saturday.
“To be among parents frantically trying to tend to little children in strollers,” she said, “people using motorized carts trying to navigate as the rest of us staggered in retreat, unsure of how to get to safety, was terrifying.”
A Portland protester identified only as Robin gave an account similar to Barnett’s during an interview with local news station KPTV.
“About eight or 10 of them came out with guns whatever kind of guns they have and flash bombed just started throwing them at the crowd just exploding everywhere,” said Robin. “It was like a war zone. It felt like we were under attack. I definitely got hit. I had to run around the corner and pour a bunch of water on my face.”
One local protester identified only as Celeste told local news station KOIN 6 that she was out on the streets because she wanted to “fight tyranny.”
“What’s happening in our streets with ICE is ridiculous,” said Celeste. “It’s illegal. It’s got to be stopped. And no one’s going to stop it. Except we the people. We’ve got a tyrant in the White House, and no one will stop him but us.”

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey is warning that the Trump administration has crossed a “terrifying line” with its use of federal immigration enforcement agents to brutalize and abduct people in his city.
In an interview with the New York Times published Saturday, Frey described operations that have taken place in his city as “marauding gangs of guys just walking down the street indiscriminately picking people up,” likening it to a military “invasion.”

During the interview, Frey was asked what he made of Attorney General Pam Bondi’s recent offer to withdraw immigration enforcement forces from his city if Minnesota handed over its voter registration records to the federal government.
“That is wildly unconstitutional,” Frey replied. “We should all be standing up and saying that’s not OK. Literally, listen to what they’re saying. Active threats like, Turn over the voter rolls or else, or we will continue to do what we’re doing. That’s something you can do in America now.”
Frey was also asked about Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz’s comments from earlier in the week where he likened the administration’s invasion of Minneapolis to the first battle that took place during the US Civil War in Fort Sumter.
“I don’t think he’s saying that the Civil War is going to happen,” said Frey. “I think what he’s saying is that a significant and terrifying line is being crossed. And I would agree with that.”
As Frey issued warnings about the federal government’s actions in Minneapolis, more horror stories have emerged involving US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in Minnesota.
The Associated Press reported on Saturday that staff at the Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis have been raising red flags over ICE agents’ claims about Alberto Castañeda Mondragón, a Mexican immigrant whom they treated after he suffered a shattered skull earlier this month.
ICE agents who brought Castañeda Mondragón to the hospital told staffers that he had injured himself after he “purposefully ran headfirst into a brick wall” while trying to escape their custody.
Nurses who treated Castañeda Mondragón, however, said that there is no way that running headfirst into a wall could produce the sheer number of skull fractures he suffered, let alone the internal bleeding found throughout his brain.
“It was laughable, if there was something to laugh about,” one nurse at the hospital told the Associated Press. “There was no way this person ran headfirst into a wall.”
According to a Saturday report in the New York Times, concern over ICE’s brutality has grown to such an extent that many Minnesota residents, including both documented immigrants and US citizens, have started wearing passports around their necks to avoid being potentially targeted.
Joua Tsu Thao, a 75-year-old US citizen who came to the country after aiding the American military during the Vietnam War, said the aggressive actions of immigration officers have left him with little choice but to display his passport whenever he walks outside his house.
“We need to be ready before they point a gun to us,” Thao explained to the Times.
CNN on Friday reported that ICE has been rounding up refugees living in Minnesota who were allowed to enter the US after undergoing “a rigorous, years-long vetting process,” and sending them to a facility in Texas where they are being prepared for deportation.
Lawyers representing the abducted refugees told CNN that their clients have been “forced to recount painful asylum claims with limited or no contact with family members or attorneys.”
Some of the refugees taken to Texas have been released from custody. But instead of being flown back home, they were released in Texas “without money, identification, or phones,” CNN reported.
Laurie Ball Cooper, vice president for US legal programs at the International Refugee Assistance Project, told CNN that government agents abducting refugees who had previously been allowed into the US is part of “a campaign of terror” that “is designed to scare people.”

‘Frightening’: Tom Homan Uses War Jargon to Describe ICE Operations in Minnesota

“’In theater’ is an expression that has no place anywhere within the United States,” said one critic.
White House border czar Tom Homan on Thursday sparked alarm when he used terminology associated with overseas war to describe federal immigration operations taking place in Minnesota.
During a press briefing, Homan was asked about the number of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents operating in Minnesota.

“3,000,” Homan replied. “There’s been some rotations. Another thing I witnessed when I came here, I’ll share this with you, I’ve met a lot of people, they’ve been in theater, some of them have been in theater for eight months. So there’s going to be rotations of personnel.”

Typically terms such as “rotations” and “theater” are not used to describe domestic law enforcement operations, but overseas military deployments.
Many critics were quick to notice Homan’s use of war jargon to describe actions being taken in a US city and said it was reflective of how the Trump administration sees itself as an occupying force in its own country.
“’In theater’ like they’re landing marines at Guadalcanal or something,” wrote Aaron Fritschner, deputy chief of staff for Rep. Don Beyer (D-Va.), in a post on X. “This stuff is happening in suburban American communities, that’s where they’re sending violent, masked invaders.”
Northwestern University historian Kathleen Belew also expressed shock at Homan’s rhetoric.
“’In theater’ is an expression that has no place anywhere within the United States,” she wrote on Bluesky. “’In theater’ means in a war.”
Andrew Lawrence, deputy director of rapid response as Media Matters, said Homan’s war talk was “a crazy way to describe Minneapolis,” while documentary filmmaker John Darwin Kurc described it as a “frightening characterization.”
Shelby Edwards, a retired US Army major, also recognized the violent implications of Homan’s words.
“Incredibly damaging how military language has infiltrated these agencies,” she observed. “’In theater’ is used for deployments into foreign nations, when we deploy soldiers we say things like this. This is America. This is an American agency assigned to an American city.”

‘This Is a Dangerous, Dangerous Moment’: AOC Warns Trump, Noem Laying Groundwork for Insurrection Act

“Mayor Frey is executing on the municipal laws passed by duly elected officials, by the people of Minneapolis,” said Ocasio-Cortez. “That is what it means to live in a democracy.”
US Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said Sunday that President Donald Trump has “considered” invoking the Insurrection Act a day after Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez warned that Border Patrol agents’ killing of Alex Pretti had plunged the US into a “dangerous, dangerous moment” in which the White House appeared to be “laying the groundwork” to use the law to deploy the US military for domestic law enforcement.
Noem and other top White House officials, said Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), have been suggesting that leaders like Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz—both Democrats who have demanded federal agents leave the city and state—are “breaking the law” by following local ordinances that protect immigrants and citizens from immigration enforcement.

Noem has claimed that the two leaders are “’inciting,’ that their resistance and difference from this administration, that their political difference in policy from this administration—she is equating disagreement with incitement,” the congresswoman told CNN Saturday.

She suggested the narrative appears aimed at convincing Americans that actions taken by local and state leaders could result in Trump invoking the Insurrection Act and sending the US military into cities, if he doesn’t agree with the leaders’ policies.
Like Trump and White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt have in recent days, Noem on Saturday accused the mayor and governor of “encouraging” violence against “our citizens and our law enforcement officers.”
“The Minnesota governor and the Minneapolis mayor need to take a long, hard look in the mirror,” Noem said. “They need to evaluate their rhetoric, their conversations, and their encouragement of such violence.”
She added that Walz “encouraged residents and citizens and violent rioters to resist.”
Over a week ago, Leavitt also accused Walz of “inciting the harassment” of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers and said the governor should “pick up the phone and say that he will cooperate with the president and federal government in making Minnesota safer.”
Leavitt held up a photo of people she claimed were undocumented immigrants who had come into the country under the Biden administration and committed violent crimes, but analyses by the libertarian Cato Institute has shown nearly three-quarters of people booked into ICE detention in recent months had no criminal convictions.
The press secretary also accused Democratic governors and mayors of holding state and local law enforcement “hostage” with ordinances barring them from cooperating with ICE.
On CNN, Ocasio-Cortez said that while framing their attacks as though they are targeting Frey and Walz, Noem and Leavitt have actually been “taking issue with the people of Minneapolis and the people of Minnesota, who have duly elected their own elected officials to enact their will. They may not like it, but that is what the people of Minnesota and the people of Minneapolis want. They want people’s civil liberties and civil rights protected.”
“Mayor Frey is executing on the municipal laws passed by duly elected officials, by the people of Minneapolis,” said Ocasio-Cortez. “That is what it means to live in a democracy, and that is precisely what they are trying to threaten and undermine in this moment.”
On Fox News Sunday, Noem said that the question of whether to invoke the Insurrection Act, which would allow Trump to deploy the US military to American cities for domestic law enforcement purposes, is “up to the president” before repeating claims that Pretti was to blame for his own death.
The killing was caught on video by witnesses who saw him holding a cellphone as he tried to help a woman who’d been pushed to the ground by an agent, being pepper-sprayed, and then being thrown to the ground and surrounded by several officers, at least one of whom shot him 10 times after another agent had taken his legal firearm away.
Noem claimed, as she and other Trump officials did immediately after Pretti was killed, that he was “confronting” the officers and “impeding” their operations—assertions that are directly contradicted by videos of the incident.

Ocasio-Cortez said on CNN that following the fatal shooting, the administration has been “asking the American people to not believe their eyes, to not believe their ears, and to not believe what they are seeing right before them… They are asking you to instead hand over your belief to anything they say.”
