The Gulf countries and Jordan on Wednesday strongly denounced Iranian attacks as a “flagrant violation” of their sovereignty and territorial integrity, affirming their full right to self-defense, Anadolu reports.

In a joint statement, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Jordan said attacks carried out by Iran or its proxies constitute “a violation of international law, international humanitarian law, and the United Nations Charter.”

They particularly cited attacks launched by Iran-backed armed groups in Iraq as “a breach of international laws and conventions,” and “a blatant violation” of UN Security Council 2817, which demands Iran cease all assaults and threats against neighboring countries.

The statement called on the Iraqi government to take “the necessary measures” to halt attacks by armed groups against neighbors “in order to preserve fraternal relations and prevent further escalation.”

Signatories reaffirmed their full right to self-defense “against these criminal attacks,” and to take all necessary measures “to preserve their sovereignty, security, and stability.”

They also condemned acts and activities “that undermine the security and stability of the region’s countries, planned by sleeper cells loyal to Iran and terrorist organizations linked to Hezbollah.”

Regional escalation has continued to flare since the US and Israel launched a joint offensive on Iran on Feb. 28, killing so far over 1,340 people, including then-Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

Tehran has retaliated with drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, along with Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf countries hosting US military assets, causing casualties and damage to infrastructure while disrupting global markets and aviation.

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) announced on Monday that its teams have been unable to visit Palestinian detainees held in Israeli detention centres since October 2023.

In a statement, the committee said it had not received approval to access the detainees during this period. It stressed the importance of being informed about the status and location of all detainees and being allowed to carry out its humanitarian work in accordance with international humanitarian law.

The ICRC underlined the need to ensure humane treatment for detainees, provide decent detention conditions, and allow them to communicate with their families.

The statement added that many Palestinian families are living in deep anxiety while waiting for any information about their detained relatives.

The committee said it continues to hold talks with Israeli authorities to resume visits to all Palestinian detainees, without giving a specific timeline.

So far, there has been no official response from Israeli authorities regarding the statement.

Youth Demand activists in Old Street, central London, April 5, 2025

DOZENS of activists from Youth Demand blocked streets in central London on Saturday, calling for the government to impose a total trade embargo on Israel.

The activists also said the super-rich and fossil fuel elites should be made to pay damages to communities and countries worst harmed by fossil fuel burning.

Monday-Malachi Rosenfeld, 22, a politics and international relations student from east London, took part in the action.

He said: “Every day the Labour government is killing children in Palestine and they do not care so long as the money from Israeli trade keeps flowing.

“We have all seen what’s happening in Gaza and we must not look away. Children are dying. Entire families are starving.

“Our government has a direct part in this genocide and they know it. Just two weeks ago, [Foreign Secretary] David Lammy himself admitted that Israel was violating international humanitarian law.

“Instead of having any humanity, our government is trying to silence and suppress those speaking out about these crimes.”

Israel turns Gaza’s Eid into tragedy with new massacres

The mass killings tainted the supposedly joyful occasion in Gaza with blood, and replaced celebrations with funerals.

Over 60 Palestinians were killed in multiple Israeli airstrikes that rocked different parts of the Gaza strip, on Sunday, March 30, which also marked the first day of Eid Al-Fitr holiday.

The Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) intensified their aerial attacks on the besieged enclave in the early hours of Sunday and throughout the day. However, hundreds of thousands of people in Gaza gathered to perform Eid prayers atop the rubble of demolished mosques, in a clear message to the world that their will to survive is greater than Israel’s destruction.

Israel deliberately targeted rescue teams in Rafah

The first day of Eid saw another incident of tragedy for the people of Gaza, after the Palestinian Red Crescent Society (PRCS) announced that it retrieved the bodies of 14 aid workers in Rafah, southern Gaza. The 14 included eight PRCS medics, five staff members of the Palestinian Civil Defense agency, and an employee working with a UN agency.

The recovery of the bodies was announced six days after the PRCS had lost contact with the rescue teams. The release of satellite images exclusively obtained by Al Jazeera demonstrated that the IOF destroyed at least five rescue vehicles belonging to the PRCS and the Civil Defense, who were on a humanitarian mission in Tel al-Sultan neighborhood in Rafah. The IOF did so after they targeted the teams of both organizations, which included 15 volunteers.

Mourning its executed staff, the PRCS said in a statement that “they were targeted by the Israeli occupation forces while performing their humanitarian duties as they were heading to the Hashashin area of Rafah to provide first aid to a number of people injured by Israeli shelling in the area.” The organization added that a ninth medic remains missing.

The PRCS called the massacre a “tragedy” not only for the organization “but also for humanitarian work and humanity.” Emphasizing that the incident was a deliberate execution the PRCS said that the rescue teams were targeted by the IOF “despite the protected status of their mission and the Red Crescent emblem.”

It also pointed out that the incident “can only be considered a war crime punishable under international humanitarian law, which the occupation continues to violate before the eyes of the entire world.”

Meanwhile, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) expressed its outrage at the deaths of eight medics from the PRCS.

The IFRC stressed that when the medics were killed, their ambulance vehicle was “clearly marked” and they were wearing emblems that “should have protected them.”

“I am heartbroken. These dedicated ambulance workers were responding to wounded people. They were humanitarians. They wore emblems that should have protected them; their ambulances were clearly marked. They should have returned to their families; they did not.” IFRC Secretary General Jagan Chapagain stated.

“Even in the most complex conflict zones, there are rules. These rules of International Humanitarian Law could not be clearer – civilians must be protected; humanitarians must be protected. Health services must be protected.” He added.

Unicef: A million children in Gaza ‘are living without the very basics they need to survive’

A Palestinian girl struggles as she and others try to get donated food at a distribution centre in Beit Lahiya, northern Gaza Strip, March 16, 2025

A MILLION children are living in Gaza without the basic means of survival, Unicef’s Middle East and North Africa (Mena) regional director Edouard Beigbeder warned today as Israel’s aid blockade entered its 16th day.

Having concluded a four-day visit to the devastated Gaza Strip and the occupied West Bank, Mr Beigbeder said in a statement that nearly all the 2.4 million children living in Palestinian territories have been affected by the recent conflict.

“Some children live with tremendous fear or anxiety; others face the real consequences of deprivation of humanitarian assistance and protection, displacement, destruction or death,” Mr Beigbeder said.

“Without aid entering the Gaza Strip, roughly one million children are living without the very basics they need to survive — yet again.

“Stalled just a few dozen kilometres outside the Gaza Strip sit more than 180,000 doses of essential childhood routine vaccines, enough to fully vaccinate and protect 60,000 children under two years of age, as well as 20 lifesaving ventilators for neonatal intensive care units.”

Approximately 4,000 newborn babies are unable to access essential lifesaving care, he said, due to Israel’s blockade of humanitarian aid — an apparent war crime.

Lives are being lost every day, the Unicef Mena chief said, “especially among vulnerable, premature newborns in the northern Gaza Strip.

“In accordance with international humanitarian law, civilians’ essential needs must be met, and this requires facilitating the entry of life-saving assistance, whether or not there is a ceasefire in place.
