Iran and Qatar have resumed their maritime trade following roughly five months of suspension, Iran’s commercial attaché in Doha said on Sunday, Anadolu reports.

Maritime shipping between Iran’s Dayyer Port and Qatar’s Al Ruwais Port resumed following coordination between the Iranian Embassy in Doha and Qatari authorities, Abbas Abdolkhani added in statements carried by Iran’s state news agency IRNA.

Tensions have escalated in the Middle East after the US and Israel launched strikes on Iran in February. Tehran retaliated with strikes on Israel and other regional countries hosting US assets, including Qatar.

The fighting stopped on April 8 when Pakistan secured a ceasefire, and an initial memorandum was signed in June. Mediators, including Qatar, continue talks for a final deal.

Hussam Abu Safiya, director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in the Gaza Strip, who has been detained by Israel since 2024, is facing an immediate threat to his life, Physicians for Human Rights said Saturday.

Physicians for Human Rights said its lawyer, Nasser Odeh, documented serious injuries, signs of physical abuse, breathing difficulties and repeated episodes of loss of consciousness during a July 2 visit to Abu Safiya at the Rakefet detention facility in Nitzan Prison, according to the Palestinian news agency WAFA on Saturday.

Abu Safiya was brought to the meeting shackled at both hands and feet and escorted by masked prison guards, Odeh said.

He reportedly showed fresh injuries and severe bruising around his head, eyes, ears and neck, with Odeh saying his physical condition had deteriorated to the point that he was difficult to recognize.

Physicians for Human Rights Israel renewed its call for the immediate release of Abu Safiya and other doctors held without charge or trial.

Naji Abbas, head of the Prisoners and Detainees Department at the organization, said the latest information has sparked urgent and grave concerns over Abu Safiya’s life.

He said the lawyer’s account was among the most alarming testimonies the organization has received since the start of the war, noting that Abu Safiya expressed fear that he could be killed in detention.

Abbas added that Abu Safiya’s condition deteriorated after he contested his detention in court, saying the developments demand an immediate and impartial investigation.

He emphasized that Israeli authorities are fully accountable for the health, safety and well-being of all detainees and urged swift international intervention.

The Israeli army detained Hussam Abu Safiya, director of Kamal Adwan Hospital, on Dec. 27, 2024, after storming the hospital, forcing him out at gunpoint and rendering large parts of the facility inoperable.

Abu Safiya was injured on Nov. 24, 2024, in an Israeli strike targeting the hospital but refused to leave, continuing to treat patients despite losing his son during an earlier Israeli raid on Oct. 26, 2024.

In Feb. 2025, Israeli authorities designated Abu Safiya an “unlawful combatant” amid reports of torture and medical neglect. The Palestinian Prisoners Media Office announced on June 3, 2026, that he had been transferred to solitary confinement.

Trump’s Massive July 4 Fireworks Show Is a Public Health Disaster in the Making: Leaked Documents

An internal National Park Service report recommends Washington, DC residents “wear an N95 mask when outdoors” and “remain indoors as much as possible during and after the show.”

President Donald Trump’s plans for a massive fireworks show in Washington, DC on July 4th could lead to a public health disaster, according to leaked National Park Service documents obtained by The Washington Post.

As the Post reported on Wednesday, internal NPS models project that Trump’s plan to launch an estimated 850,000 fireworks over a 40-minute span on Saturday will lead to “very unhealthy” air quality throughout downtown Washington, DC, Arlington, and the area around Capitol Hill.

NPS’ internal report recommends that residents “wear an N95 mask when outdoors” and “remain indoors as much as possible during and after the show.”

George Thurston, a professor of medicine and population health at New York University, said that the amount of pollution projected by the NPS is so severe that people should “minimize exposures” to outdoor air during the fireworks show, while adding that wearing “an N95 mask would be a good idea.”

Thurston also expressed concern about DC residents living in low-income neighborhoods, which are disproportionately exposed to environmental pollutants and could be particularly vulnerable to hazardous air quality stemming from the festivities.

A Tuesday report from Capital Weather also expressed concerns about Trump’s planned fireworks, noting that “the approximately 860,000 shells anticipated in this year’s show will be at least roughly 50 times more than the usual 10,000 to 20,000 shells” launched during past events.

The problem could be made worse, Capital Weather added, by the extreme heat Washington, DC is expected to get on July 4, with temperatures projected to peak at 100ºF.

“Unless there are strong winds, there will very likely be near-record amounts of smoke to go with all the fireworks,” Capital Weather explained. “As of now, winds only look to be around 5 to 8 mph, which will struggle to push the smoke along. If a chance of scattered storms materializes, it could become even more humid and primed for smoke to hang around.”

The Israeli army on Thursday confirmed the authenticity of a widely circulated image showing a Palestinian detainee being abused by Israeli forces in the Gaza Strip, Anadolu reports.

The image shows the detainee lying face down, blindfolded and bound with wire, with an iron rod strapped to his back.

The image sparked widespread criticism on social media and renewed calls from human rights advocates for an independent investigation into the treatment of Palestinian detainees in Israeli custody.

The confirmation came in a statement carried by Israel’s Army Radio, which quoted an unnamed military spokesperson after the image circulated widely on social media.

“The army confirms that the footage published on Palestinian networks over the past 24 hours, showing a man from Gaza handcuffed, tied to a bed, blindfolded, and with a rod tied to his back, is real footage that occurred in the Gaza Strip,” the spokesperson said.

Army Radio published the image but provided no details about where or when the incident occurred.

The image renewed attention to the harsh detention conditions and abuse of Palestinian detainees held by Israel.

According to Palestinian and Israeli human rights groups, about 9,500 Palestinians are held in Israeli prisons, where detainees face torture, starvation, and medical neglect that have resulted in the deaths of dozens of prisoners.

Israel has waged a genocidal war on Gaza since Oct. 7, 2023, killing around 73,000 Palestinians and injuring more than 173,000, according to Palestinian figures, while widespread destruction has affected about 90% of the enclave’s civilian infrastructure.

US fighter jets presence over Hormuz threatens regional security: Iranian army

The Iranian army warned on Thursday that the continued presence of US manned and unmanned military aircraft over the Strait of Hormuz threatens regional security and vowed a “swift and decisive” response to any American interference in the strategic waterway.

In a statement carried by the semi-official Fars News Agency, Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters said the continued presence of US fighter jets and drones over the Strait of Hormuz “has caused insecurity in this waterway and will threaten regional security.”

Iran “will not hesitate to take any action” to repel “any aggression and violation by the US military and its supporters in defense of its sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz.”

“Any American interference in the Strait of Hormuz will be met with a decisive and swift response from the armed forces,” the statement said

The headquarters described the Strait of Hormuz as “the sovereign territory of the Islamic Republic of Iran,” and that the security and stability of the strategic waterway constitute “a red line” for the country’s armed forces.

It also reiterated that all oil tankers and commercial vessels must use the navigation route designated by Iran when transiting the strait.

According to the statement, any vessel failing to comply with Iran’s designated route or navigation protocols will face “an immediate and forceful response” from the armed forces and risk its own security.

Iran and the US reached the memorandum of understanding on June 18 called for extending the ceasefire reached earlier for 60 days, lifting the US naval blockade on Iran, and the full reopening of Strait of Hormuz.

Technical negotiations to implement the memorandum and agree on a final deal that will also include consensus on the status of Iran’s nuclear program continue under joint Qatari-Pakistani mediation.
