An Israeli soldier has died by suicide inside a military base in northern Israel, raising the number of Israeli soldiers who have taken their own lives since the start of the war on Gaza to 61, according to a Hebrew newspaper.
The newspaper Haaretz reported on Tuesday that the soldier, a tracker serving in regular military service, shot himself inside the base. He was seriously wounded and was later pronounced dead on Tuesday evening as a result of his injuries.
Shortly before that, the Israeli army said in a statement that a soldier had been seriously injured by gunfire at a military base in northern Israel and was taken to hospital, where he later died. The army added that the military police had opened an investigation into the incident.
On 28 October this year, an official Israeli report issued by the Knesset’s Research and Information Centre revealed that 279 soldiers had attempted suicide since the beginning of 2024.
The report, prepared at the request of Knesset member Ofer Cassif, said the attempts were recorded between January 2024 and July 2025. According to Israel’s official public broadcaster, the data show an average of seven suicide attempts for every confirmed suicide case.
