37 Palestinian journalists held in Israeli jails, rights group says

Israel is holding 37 Palestinian journalists in its prisons, including 19 under administrative detention without charge or trial, the Palestinian Prisoner Society said Sunday.
The nongovernmental group said all 37 journalists were detained following the start of the Gaza genocide in October 2023.
It said Israel continues to target Palestinian journalists through arrests, prison sentences, solitary confinement and prosecution over their work and freedom of expression.
Among the latest detainees are journalists Muath Ammarna and Sabri Jibrin, who were arrested Thursday after Israeli forces raided their homes in Bethlehem in the southern West Bank.
The group said Ammarna has been repeatedly targeted by Israeli authorities and is now being detained for the third time over his journalistic work.
It also cited the case of journalist and writer Mahmoud Fatafta, who was sentenced to 48 months in prison over what Israel describes as “incitement,” one of the harshest sentences issued in such cases, according to the statement.
The society said Israeli authorities increasingly use “incitement” charges against journalists, alongside administrative detention based on what authorities describe as “secret files.”

Nineteen journalists from the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, are currently held under administrative detention, accounting for 51% of all detained journalists, it added.
The group also highlighted the case of journalist Bushra al-Tawil, 33, who was transferred from Damon Prison in northern Israel to solitary confinement at Ramla Prison in central Israel.
It accused Israeli authorities of intensifying isolation and other restrictive measures against female Palestinian prisoners, alongside food deprivation, denial of medical treatment and poor sanitation conditions.
The society said detained journalists face the same conditions as other Palestinian prisoners, including hunger, medical neglect, torture, abuse, solitary confinement and denial of basic rights.
Journalists are also targeted through killings, enforced disappearances and direct attacks while carrying out their work, it added, describing this as part of a systematic policy aimed at restricting Palestinian reporting and documentation of Israeli crimes and violations.
The occupied West Bank has seen daily Israeli army raids and escalating attacks by occupiers since the start of the Gaza genocide in October 2023. The attacks have included killings, arrests, demolitions, attacks on homes, vehicles and mosques, destruction of agricultural land, restrictions on farmers, displacement of Palestinians and expansion of illegal settlements.
On Thursday, the Palestinian Prisoner Society said Israeli forces detained more than 100 Palestinians across the West Bank over the previous week, bringing the number of West Bank detainees since October 2023 to more than 25,000, in addition to thousands detained from Gaza.

1 missing, 13 rescued after vessel attacked off Oman in Strait of Hormuz

India on Sunday said 13 crew members were rescued, while one remains missing after an attack on a vessel off the coast of Oman in the Strait of Hormuz, Anadolu reports.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs, while condemning the attack on the commercial vessel “MT El Gaia,” said 14 Indian crew members were on board when the attack happened and one remained missing.
“Our Embassy in Oman is closely monitoring the situation and proactively coordinating with the Omani authorities in the ongoing Search and Rescue operation. We thank the Omani authorities for their support in rescuing our nationals,” the ministry said.
New Delhi, while calling for “immediate de-escalation of tensions and pursuance of dialogue and diplomacy to bring peace to the region,” said the “targeting of commercial shipping, seafarers, civilians, and civilian infrastructure in the region is unacceptable.”
“We also urge that free and safe navigation and flow of commerce through the international waterways in the region be restored at the earliest,” the ministry said.

Early Sunday, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said that a vessel transiting the Strait of Hormuz had been struck by an unidentified munition.
An online statement said no information was available on the condition of the crew, the extent of the damage or the vessel’s potential effect on the surrounding environment.
The maritime authority said an investigation is underway and advised vessels to proceed with caution and report suspicious activity.
Traffic through the critical Strait of Hormuz remains well below levels before the start of the US-Iran war this February amid continued security risks and attacks on commercial vessels going through regional waters.

Saudi Arabia issues emergency alerts of ‘potential danger’ in southwestern areas

Saudi Arabia’s Civil Defense issued emergency alerts of a “potential danger” on Sunday in the southwestern city of Abha and Khamis Mushait governorate, before later announcing that the threat had passed in both areas, Anadolu reports.
The warnings were issued through the kingdom’s National Early Warning Platform for Emergencies, according to Civil Defense statements.
Authorities first activated an alert in Khamis Mushait, warning residents of a “potential danger” without specifying its nature.
A similar alert was later issued in Abha, also in southwestern Saudi Arabia.
The Civil Defense subsequently announced that the danger had passed in both Khamis Mushait and Abha.

The statements did not provide further details on the nature of the threat or report any casualties or damage.
A day before, similar alerts were activated in the same regions
The latest alerts came amid rapidly escalating fighting in neighboring Yemen, where the Houthis have taken control of strategic areas near the Bab al-Mandab Strait, including the districts of Hays and Al-Khawkhah in the western Al-Hudaydah province.
Fighting between Yemeni government forces and the Houthis has also intensified on several fronts, particularly in the Taiz, Al-Jawf, and Al-Bayda provinces, amid airstrikes targeting Houthi positions.
Yemen has been engulfed in conflict since the Houthis seized the capital Sanaa and several provinces in 2014. A Saudi-led coalition intervened in 2015 in support of Yemen’s internationally recognized government.

US diplomat accused of possessing child abuse images ‘secretly flown out of UK’

US officials seized a diplomat who faces allegations of possessing indecent images of children and ‘secretly’ flew him out of the UK, according to reports.
The Sun reported that the man’s flat in Putney, southwest London, was stormed on August 25, before he was taken back across the Atlantic without the British police being told.
It is believed he was removed from his flat amid an investigation into another person based in the US.
British ministers are understood to be in contact with the US Embassy and law enforcement as the full facts are established.
US authorities do not have powers of arrest in the UK, and the formal extradition process does not appear to have taken place.
