“In its eagerness to short-circuit reactor safeguards, the Trump administration is once again doing what it does best—demonstrating a complete disregard for the law,” said the head of Beyond Nuclear.

A coalition of advocacy groups on Monday took aim at President Donald Trump’s nuclear power plans, including a recently proposed rule that would allow developers using federally approved reactor designs to bypass required safety reviews, which the organizations called “ill-advised and contrary to law.”

“In its eagerness to short-circuit reactor safeguards, the Trump administration is once again doing what it does best—demonstrating a complete disregard for the law,” said Linda Pentz Gunter, executive director of Beyond Nuclear, in a statement.

‘An Almost Unthinkable Threat’: Trump Warning That Iran Will ‘Glow’ Sparks Latest Fears of Nuclear Attack

“But nuclear technology is too inherently dangerous to operate as an outlaw,” she stressed. “Ignoring those dangers will put millions of Americans at risk of another catastrophic nuclear accident.”

Beyond Nuclear and the Nuclear Information and Resource Service (NIRS) have submitted multiple formal comments to the administration, on behalf of overlapping coalitions, blasting its ongoing nuclear policymaking, which has been guided by a series of executive orders signed by the president last May.

The first coalition comments focus on the US Department of Energy allowing firms that build experimental nuclear reactors to seek exemptions from legally required environmental reviews. That filing was submitted in early March, a month after DOE announced the “categorical exclusion for authorization, siting, construction, operation, reauthorization, and decommissioning of advanced nuclear reactors for inclusion in its National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) implementing procedures.”

Then, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission last month unveiled a proposed rule to expedite NRC reviews of commercial nuclear power plant applications involving reactor designs already approved by DOE or the Department of Defense (DOD)—which Trump has dubbed the Department of War. That prompted more comments from Beyond Nuclear, NIRS, and allied groups last week.

“Along with the DOE’s environmental ‘free pass’ policy, the whole ‘expedited licensing’ regime the administration is attempting to set up appears to be illegal,” NIRS executive director Tim Judson, who co-authored the recent comments to the NRC, said Monday.

“The White House is trying to create a ‘regulatory tunnel’ around NRC’s safety regulations,” he warned. “That would mean DOE’s biases and obviously false assumptions about the safety of nuclear power plants become the new normal, exposing the public to unacceptable dangers to our health and safety.”

“And while the law allows the DOD to build its own nuclear reactors,” Judson added, “it does not allow the NRC to skip safety reviews for civilian nuclear plants just because they use the same designs. The military routinely exposes its personnel to dangers that civilians are supposed to be protected from.”

The coalition’s latest filing details how the administration’s actions are “inconsistent” with the Administrative Procedure Act, Atomic Energy Act, Energy Reorganization Act, and NEPA, “as well as the constitutional requirement for due process in a democratic society.” It also emphasizes that nothing in Trump’s orders “can excuse” the alleged legal violations.

“Fifty years ago, the Atomic Energy Commission was abolished because they became too much of a promoter and lost the confidence of Congress and the public over safety,” Paul Gunter, director of the reactor oversight project at Beyond Nuclear, explained Monday.

“The NRC was established to provide a regulator that prioritizes safety and is obligated not to take shortcuts for a production agenda,” he continued. “Instead, half a century later, we are on the same dangerous collision course, casting aside the NRC in favor of the DOE, which doesn’t have the experience or the staff to get the industry in line with safety and security. This capitulation to the Trump agenda could lead to the NRC being abolished altogether, because nobody will have confidence in them.”

The Iranian foreign minister said Saturday that “radioactive fallout will end life in GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council) capitals, not Tehran,” following the US-Israeli airstrikes that hit Iran’s Bushehr nuclear plant, Anadolu reports.

“Remember the Western outrage about hostilities near Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine?

“Israel-U.S. have bombed our Bushehr plant four times now. Radioactive fallout will end life in GCC capitals, not Tehran,” Abbas Araghchi said through US social media company X.

Attacks on Iranian petrochemical facilities also reveal “real objectives,” Araghchi argued.

Earlier in the day, US and Israeli strikes hit Iran’s Bushehr nuclear plant, killing one person.

The attack came as regional tensions have escalated since the US and Israel launched a joint offensive on Iran on Feb. 28, killing over 1,340 people to date, including then-Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

Tehran has retaliated with drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, as well as Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf countries hosting US military assets.

‘Filled With Lies’: Trump White House Releases False History of Jan. 6

“It is past time for 25th Amendment remedies,” said one critic.

To commemorate the fifth anniversary of the deadly riots incited by President Donald Trump at the US Capitol Building, the Trump White House on Tuesday unveiled a website loaded with false claims about the events that took place on January 6, 2021.

The official White House January 6 website features multiple falsehoods and distortions about the Trump-incited Capitol riots, including brazenly false claims about the Capitol Police “escalating” tensions with rioters by firing “tear gas, flash bangs, and rubber munitions into crowds of peaceful protesters.”

In reality, Trump supporters stormed past police barricades that had been set up at the Capitol and then smashed windows to enter the building and illegally disrupt the certification of the 2020 presidential election, which Trump falsely claimed to have won.

The website also blames former Vice President Mike Pence for refusing to go along with Trump’s unconstitutional scheme to unilaterally discard certified election results from key swing states, which would have put the election results in the hands of Republican-controlled state legislatures to falsely certify Trump as the winner.

The Trump White House’s revisionist history of the riots falsely claims that rioter Ashli Babbitt was “murdered in cold blood” by Capitol Police, when in reality she was shot while trying to break into into the Speaker’s Lobby after being warned multiple times by officers to stand back.

The Capitol rioters garner significant praise from the White House website, which falsely portrays them as peaceful demonstrators who fell victim to the actions of Capitol Police and overly zealous Department of Justice (DOJ) prosecutors.

“On his first day back in office, January 20, 2025, President Trump issued sweeping blanket pardons and commutations for nearly 1,600 patriotic Americans prosecuted for their presence at the Capitol—many mere trespassers or peaceful protesters treated as insurrectionists by a weaponized Biden DOJ,” the website says.

The blatantly false claims on the website drew a horrified reaction from many critics, including some journalists who were at the Capitol on that day and witnesses the riots firsthand.

“Never forget that Trump attempted a coup to stay in power after losing reelection, ending with the violent insurrection he incited that left 140 cops injured, five dead,” wrote HuffPost White House correspondent SV Dáte on X.

“The White House’s new January 6 page is filled with lies, misrepresentation, and reality denial,” wrote Bellingcat founder Eliot Higgins on Bluesky. “It’s a clear attempt to rewrite history and frame Trump in heroic terms.”

Author Mike Rothschild accused the White House of engaging in historical revisionism on par with the government depicted in George Orwell’s classic novel 1984, arguing that Trump and his underlings of embracing “an alternate reality so hackneyed and obviously fake that it would make Orwell stick his head in a wood chipper.”

Victor Ray, a sociologist at the University of Iowa, raised alarms about what the January 6 White House website says about Trump’s mental health.

“This is batshit,” he wrote. “The White House is doing alternate reality history. It is past time for 25th Amendment remedies.”

Matt Gertz, senior fellow at Media Matters for America, reacted to the section of the website blaming Pence by describing it as an ominous sign that a future coup attempt by Trump to illegally remain in power might actually succeed.

“Trump replaced Pence on the ticket with someone he fully expects would carry out this deranged scheme if he has the opportunity, instead betraying the Constitution,” he wrote, referring to Vice President JD Vance, who criticized Pence for fulfilling his constitutional duty and certifying the 2020 election results.

US maintains “Christian genocide” narrative at UN special event

Analysts argue that framing the conflict as religious persecution masks a deeper geopolitical struggle over Nigeria’s enormous mineral wealth.

The United States intensified its claims that Nigeria is facing a “genocide against Christians” during a special event at the United Nations held in November called “Combating Christian Violence and the Killing of Christians in Nigeria”. The session, led by US Ambassador Mike Waltz, featured American rapper Nicki Minaj as one of the keynote speakers, and further amplified a narrative that Nigerian officials and regional analysts have repeatedly dismissed as misleading and politically motivated.

The UN event follows a recent wave of rhetoric by US President Donald Trump, who alleged widespread, systematic killings of Christians in the West African nation. Nigeria has rejected the accusations, insisting they are based on distorted reports and selective data that ignore the complex security realities in the country. Officials acknowledge the ongoing threat of Boko Haram and other armed groups but argue that the situation cannot be reduced to a one-sided religious persecution narrative.

Media organizations, including the BBC, have also noted that several of the claims circulating in US political circles cannot be independently verified.

Nicki Minaj repeats Trump’s narrative at UN stage

Nicki Minaj, whose earlier social media statements echoed Trump’s message, reiterated her comments at the UN event. She stated:

“In Nigeria, Christians are being targeted, driven from their homes and killed. Churches have been burned, families torn apart, and entire communities live in fear constantly, simply because of how they pray.”

Her remarks closely mirrored the religious persecution framing popularized in US conservative media, which African analysts argue oversimplifies a multidimensional conflict involving poverty, state fragility, armed groups, climate pressures, and competition over land and mineral resources.

African analysts push back

Journalist David Hundeyin, speaking to BreakThrough News, challenged the US framing, saying the violence in northern and central Nigeria cannot be understood simply as a religious conflict. He stressed that:

Boko Haram and affiliated groups have killed between 50,000 and 150,000 people, though the exact numbers remain unclear. The majority of victims have been Muslims, not Christians, since most violence occurs in predominantly Muslim regions of the north and middle belt.

Armed groups attack both Christians and Muslims, and “everyone is dying in numbers … they’re all poor people and powerless.”

According to Hundeyin, framing the conflict as religious persecution masks a deeper geopolitical struggle over Nigeria’s enormous mineral wealth, including rare earth elements crucial for global technology industries. He argues: Presenting the conflict as “Islamists killing Christians” provides a moral pretext for deeper US involvement in a region with strategic resources.

A key part of Hundeyin’s critique is the near-total absence of Muslim deaths in Western coverage. Although Muslims make up the majority of victims, their deaths rarely appear in narratives circulated in US conservative politics, which instead portray Nigeria as the world’s “epicenter of Christian persecution”.

As Pavan Kulkarni wrote in a Peoples Dispatch report last month, “The majority of people killed by the Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province are Muslims, simply because they make up the majority in the northern region these Islamist insurgencies are ravaging. For the same demographic reasons, Muslims are also the majority victims of bandits who kill, loot, and kidnap in the northwest region, where the state is struggling to enforce the rule of law. In the central region, Christian victims of violence are in the majority, not because of their religious identity but because of their occupation: farming. Amid intensifying competition over depleting land and water due to climate change, raids on farmlands by mobile herders, groups of whom are armed, are a serious problem in several African countries suffering desertification.”

The Nigerian government maintains that while terrorism remains a serious challenge, portraying the crisis as a Christian genocide is inaccurate and dangerous. Officials argue that such language obscures the socio-economic drivers of violence, including state collapse in rural areas, the proliferation of weapons, land-use conflicts, and climate-related displacement across the Sahel.

African Union issues statement

The African Union Commission (AUC), released a statement,  reaffirming its commitment to sovereignty, non-interference, religious freedom, and the rule of law as outlined in the AU Constitutive Act, and expressed concern over US allegations accusing Nigeria of targeting Christians and threatening military action, emphasizing that Nigeria is a longstanding and vital AU Member State whose sovereign right to manage its internal affairs, particularly regarding security, human rights, and religious freedom, must be fully respected by all external partners.

Nigeria’s struggles with insecurity demand nuanced understanding rather than a blanket accusation of Christians being targeted in the country.
