ISRAEL’S new registration rules for organisations providing humanitarian aid to people in Gaza risks leaving hundreds of thousands without lifesaving healthcare in 2026, Doctors Without Borders (MSF) warned today.
The new requirements threaten to withdraw registration from international non-governmental organisations (INGOs) from January 1.
This non-registration would prevent humanitarian organisations from providing essential services to people in Gaza and the West Bank, MSF said today.
“With Gaza’s health system already destroyed, independent and experienced humanitarian organisations losing access to respond would be a disaster for Palestinians,” MSF said.
The international medical charity called on Israel to ensure that INGOs can maintain and continue their work in Gaza, saying the already restricted humanitarian response cannot be further dismantled.
“In the last year, MSF teams have treated hundreds of thousands of patients and delivered hundreds of millions of litres of water,” MSF emergency co-ordinator for Gaza Pascale Coissard said today.

THE Global Sumud (steadfastness) Flotilla will launch its largest fleet yet in a bid to get aid into Gaza next spring, it has announced.
The group, which organised the 40-plus-vessel flotilla which earlier this year became the first to get within 70 nautical miles of Gaza since Israel began blockading the Palestinian territory in 2009, said it plans a new mission with over 100 ships and 1,000 participants.

Despite an official ceasefire agreed as of October 10, Gaza remains gripped by a humanitarian crisis, with insufficient food and shelter in a harsh winter. Israel insists it is meeting the ceasefire condition of allowing 600 lorryloads of aid in a day, but these are vetted by Israeli military agency Cogat and it admits 80 per cent are private-sector vehicles, many carrying commercial goods which residents of Gaza — where the economy has been destroyed by the war and the preceding 17-year illegal siege — cannot afford.
“This mission is also not only about those at sea. It is about the millions around the world who are ready to say ‘enough is enough’,” the flotilla organisers said.
“Together, we rise against apartheid, racism, imperialism, colonialism, ecocide, and all systems of oppression.”

Israel has not allowed the agreed-upon number of medical aid trucks into Gaza under October’s ceasefire deal, and has yet to give approval to thousands of people on waiting lists to receive treatment elsewhere.
With the Israeli military having violated its “ceasefire” agreement with Hamas at least 875 times since it was finalized in October, and aid groups warning that everyone in Gazaremains at risk of starvation, the exclave’s healthcare system desperately needs to treat people impacted by the ongoing humanitarian disaster—but medical experts there warn Israel’s blockade has left many hospitals barely functioning.
On Tuesday, the director-general of Gaza’s Ministry of Health, Munir al-Barsh, told Al Jazeera that the healthcare system is suffering from “widespread shortages of medicines and medical supplies, particularly surgical consumables needed to perform operations.”
The situation is “tragic and horrific,” al-Barsh told the outlet.
After Israeli attacks on nearly all of Gaza’s healthcare facilities during the war, 34 hospitals and 125 other health centers have been badly damaged. The health system has lost about 1,700 medical professionals who were killed by the Israel Defense Forces, and at least 80 doctors and other providers have been detained by Israel since 2023.
About 70% of the aid trucks that Israel has allowed into Gaza since October have carried food; the other 30% have brought in a variety of medical equipment, shelter supplies, tents, clothings, and other items. Israel is failing to allow in the agreed-upon number of medical aid trucks, Al Jazeera reported.
Earlier this month, al-Barsh toldAl Jazeera that the medical supplies allowed in remain limited, with “antibiotics, IV solutions, and surgical materials” banned.
“We are facing a situation in which 54% of essential medicines are unavailable, and 40% of the drugs for surgeries and emergency care—the very medications we rely on to treat the wounded—are missing,” al-Barsh said.
Dr. Alaa Helles, director of pharmaceutical care at the Ministry of Health, also said Sunday that 52% of medications on an “essential list” were “zero stock.”

On Tuesday, al-Barsh added that three-quarters of the total supplies needed in hospitals are unavailable, while power outages and shortages of generators are making it nearly impossible for healthcare workers to help critically injured and ill people.
He said Israel must open border crossings both to allow more supplies in and to permit the transport of thousands of people who are on long waiting lists to receive treatment outside of Gaza.
Nearly 20,000 Palestinians in Gaza are on the lists, including 18,500 who have received approval from the World Health Organization but have yet to be referred by Israeli authorities for security approval. About 3,700 of those on waiting lists are in critical condition and about 4,300 are children, Al Jazeera reported.
Al-Barsh told the outlet that at least 1,156 patients have died while waiting for security clearance from Israel.
The director-general’s comments came a day after the United Nations issued a similar warning about the thousands of people waiting for treatment outside of Gaza and the “destruction of health infrastructure” in the exclave.

“My daughter is ill and suffers from kidney failure,” a mother named Balqees Abu Ajwa told the UN News Center. “The crossings are closed and medical supplies are scarce. The medical equipment that could help my daughter stay alive is not available. My daughter has been in this condition for 20 days. She is exhausted.”

RESIDENT doctors are keen to resume talks with the government to avoid further strikes but “must see less name-calling and more deal-making” from Health Secretary Wes Streeting, said the British Medical Association (BMA) today.
Medics will enter 2026 a “renewed can-do spirit,” added the union as they returned to work after a five-day walkout in England as part of their long-running dispute over jobs and pay.
The BMA’s resident doctors committee chair Dr Jack Fletcher said: “What we need is a proper fix to this jobs crisis and a credible path towards restoring the lost value of the profession.
“That must mean the creation of genuinely new jobs, and it could involve a responsible multi-year approach to restoring doctors’ pay.
“Those are solutions that mean we can build out our future workforce to end the current crisis, solutions which are very much within government’s power.”
The strike followed 83 per cent of resident doctors voting to reject a government offer for more specialist training places but no extra pay. Turnout was 65 per cent.
Dr Fletcher said that medics are “frustrated by the year that has just passed,” which saw Mr Streeting compare them with juvenile delinquents and “moaning minnies.”
“There have been plenty of opportunities for strike action to have been avoided but all too often the government has moved too little and too late,” he added.

ENERGY companies are still relying on closed magistrates’ court hearings to secure warrants against households with unpaid bills, more than three years after the pre-payment meter scandal.
Magistrates are still sitting in private to authorise forced entry, often approving hundreds of warrants at a time based on applications they have never personally reviewed, an investigation by the Standard newspaper revealed yesterday.
It was revealed in 2022 that magistrates’ courts across Britain were effectively rubber-stamping mass batches of warrants for debt agencies, acting on behalf of energy firms.
Many of those targeted were among the poorest households, already hit by the cost-of-living crisis, with agents breaking into homes to install expensive pre-payment meters.

A new court process for approving warrants was introduced in April 2024 following approval by Chief Magistrate Paul Goldspring.
The revised system was intended to introduce safeguards, including a requirement for energy firms to give at least 10 days’ notice of an application, to attempt contact with a household at least 10 times and to wait at least a month after a missed bill before applying for a warrant.
But a year-long probe found that magistrates are now carrying out the work almost entirely in secret, sometimes from home.
Failures by debt agencies to comply with legal requirements were also found to be routinely brushed aside.
End Fuel Poverty Coalition co-ordinator Simon Francis said the findings exposed “a deeply troubling practice where people struggling with unaffordable energy bills are condemned through the courts out of sight and without a voice.”
He said: “It’s time to stop criminalising energy debt and allowing these cases to be pursued through a court system which is clearly unfit for the purpose.
