Tens of thousands of Palestinians set off toward areas vacated by Israeli forces after a ceasefire took effect on Friday, according to an Anadolu correspondent, Anadolu reports.

Thousands of displaced civilians departed from southern Gaza to their homes northward, the majority on foot. Some made the hours-long journey using the few vehicles still running amid fuel shortages, along with animal-drawn carts, bicycles, and motorcycles.

Simultaneously, thousands returned to their homes in the central Gaza Strip and some eastern parts of Khan Younis in the south, following the withdrawal of Israeli forces.

The transfers from the south to the north were carried out via the coastal Al-Rashid Street in the west and Salah al-Din Road in the east.

Hundreds of displaced civilians had to set up tents on the rubble of their homes upon returning.

A gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces toward the yellow line was completed on Friday in accordance with US President Donald Trump’s plan.

The army forces withdrew from Gaza City in the north, excluding the Shejaiya neighborhood and some parts of the Al-Tuffah and Zeitoun neighborhoods; and the central and eastern parts of Khan Younis in the south. Palestinians were prevented from entering Beit Hanoun and Beit Lahia in northern Gaza.

The Gaza Government Media Office said on Saturday that more than 5,000 missions, including humanitarian, health, rescue, and relief operations, were carried out in the past 24 hours across Gaza governorates.

Trump announced Wednesday that Israel and Hamas agreed to the first phase of a 20-point plan he laid out on Sept. 29 to bring a ceasefire to Gaza, release all Israeli captives being held there in exchange for around 2,000 Palestinian prisoners, and a gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from the entire Gaza Strip.

The first phase of the deal came into force at 12 noon local time Friday (0900 GMT).

A second phase of the plan calls for the establishment of a new governing mechanism in Gaza without Hamas’ participation, the formation of a security force comprising Palestinians and troops from Arab and Islamic countries, and the disarmament of Hamas.

Since October 2023, Israeli attacks have killed nearly 67,200 Palestinians in the enclave, most of them women and children, and rendered it uninhabitable.

‘We have to break the Tory-Labour duopoly and we will’

Jeremy Corbyn and Zarah Sultana discuss the formation of a new leftwing party

THE Tories and Labour’s grip on power must come to an end, people attending The World Transformed Festival 2025 in Manchester heard today.

A massive queue wrapped around the Niamos Radical Arts Centre in Manchester’s Moss Side in the afternoon as people waited eagerly to join a panel discussion with former Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn and independent MP Zarah Sultana focused on the formation of their new political party.

“For too long, our politics has been trapped in a cycle: the same two parties, the same tired promises, the same broken failures; a nightmare that keeps us stuck divided and ignored,” began prominent British-Palestinian activist Leanne Mohamad.

“The truth is that the two-party system has failed us all,” she said. “Everything that these two parties touch is corrupted. And that is why we have to break this duopoly and we will.”

Ms Sultana began a passionate speech by first addressing the new party’s rocky start. “Obviously, you’ve all seen what’s happened over the past few weeks,” she said. “But I’m here to tell you, the show is back on the road.”

Farage insists ex-Reform UK Wales leader convicted of bribery is ‘bad apple

Farage said he was shocked by Nathan Gill’s admissions relating to pro-Russia statements

Nigel Farage has insisted his party’s former leader in Wales who was convicted of taking pro-Russian bribes was a “bad apple” who betrayed him.

The Reform UK leader was in Caerphilly campaigning for his candidate in a forthcoming Senedd byelection when he was asked about his links to Nathan Gill.

Gill, who led Reform UK in Wales in 2021, last month admitted taking bribes to make statements in favour of Vladimir Putin’s Russia while he was a member of the European parliament.

His activities were said to include making pro-Russian statements about events in Ukraine in the European parliament and in opinion pieces to news outlets.

Questioned by reporters before walking through Caerphilly town centre, Farage said he was shocked by Gill’s admissions. He said: “Any political party can find in their midst all sorts of terrible people.

Gill, 52, pleaded guilty last month to eight counts of bribery between 6 December 2018 and 18 July 2019.

He was leader of Reform UK Wales from March to May 2021.

Five water firms to raise bills after appeal

A water bill from Southern Water

PLANS to allow water firms to increase bills yet again, despite decades of mismanagement and ongoing pollution, were condemned by campaigners today.

Five firms are set to raise charges by up to 5 per cent above the limits initially set by regulator Ofwat.

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) confirmed that Anglian Water, Northumbrian Water, South East Water, Southern Water and Wessex Water have been permitted to hike their tariffs following an appeal.

The firms argued that Ofwat’s original decision left them unable to meet the regulatory requirements set out for them.

It follows a ruling in December, in which Southern had already been allowed to increase bills by 53 per cent over the next five years.

Kirstin Baker, who chaired the independent group of experts appointed by the CMA to consider the price controls, said that the request for significant bill increases were “largely unjustified.”

River Action CEO James Wallace said: “Once again, water bill payers are forced to shoulder the cost of decades of failure.

“Millions of households in England face higher bills while rivers continue to suffer from mismanagement by privatised water companies.

Boris Johnson breached rules designed to stop abuse of contacts made in public office, watchdog finds

Johnson found to have breached rules after refusing to answer specific questions about allegations published by the Guardian

Boris Johnson breached rules designed to stop the abuse of contacts and access made in public office, an ethics watchdog has found.

Last month the Guardian published revelations about Johnson’s conduct since leaving office. The Boris Files, a trove of documents from the former prime minister’s private office seen by the Guardian, suggested he repeatedly broke rules forbidding him from exploiting for private gain contacts made in office.

Leaked documents suggested Johnson secretly lobbied the UAE for a billion-dollar private venture, amid plans to use an influential contact he had repeatedly hosted in No 10, and used senior contacts in the Saudi government he had met as prime minister to pitch the services of a consultancy firm.

After the Guardian’s stories were published, the Whitehall watchdog, the Advisory Committee on Business Appointments (Acoba), wrote to Johnson asking him to explain what he had done for the companies.

Johnson refused to answer specific questions or to provide factual denials to allegations of rule-breaking, while insisting all the rules had been followed at all times. His responses led Acoba’s chair, Isabel Doverty, to find him in breach of the rules.
