The government’s latest offensive came after the release of a documentary co-produced by PBS that allegedly exposes the deals Bukele is said to have struck with El Salvador’s most powerful gangs.

Last week, the online newspaper El Faro reported that the government of right-wing Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele froze the bank account and a property belonging to two partners of Trípode S.A., the company that founded and supports El Faro. According to the Ministry of Finance, the measure functions as collateral for alleged debts related to tax evasion.

However, the media outlet’s partners and journalists assert that this is yet another attempt to intimidate the press that has been critical of the Bukele administration and that, at its core, seeks to silence those who expose the right-wing government’s alleged acts of corruption.

The online newspaper El Faro has reported on numerous occasions that the government of right-wing President Nayib Bukele has launched several attacks against its journalists. It all began in 2020, when the president himself announced at a press conference that an investigation into the media outlet for money laundering would be launched.

Following that, the government conducted four audits to examine the source of the media outlet’s funding. Once it could not be proven that the funds were of illicit origin, the government pivoted to investigating the outlet for alleged tax evasion.

Carlos Dada, director of El Faro, told El País: “None of those audits has reached a final ruling; all are currently being litigated. We do not evade taxes. The taxes have been paid, and we have proven it.”

The allegations of deals between Bukele and the gangs

El Faro began facing increased pressure after it revealed alleged pacts between powerful Salvadoran gangs and various governments, including Bukele’s.

In May 2025, several leaders of the Barrio 18 gang claimed that their organization had engaged in negotiations with Bukele before he became president – that is, while he was mayor of San Salvador.

The recent attempt to financially strangle El Faro coincides with the release of a documentary titled “The Deal,” produced in collaboration with the US network PBS, which reconstructs the alleged agreements between the Bukele administration and the MS-13 and Barrio 18 gangs. This documentary has garnered hundreds of thousands of views in less than a month.

“Clearly, this is another step in the escalation we’ve been facing since 2020. Not only through legal channels, but also through economic strangulation, political attacks, false accusations, espionage, and the interception of our communications,” Dada told El País.

In 2023, after several years of investigations, threats of criminal trials, and audits that have proven nothing, the administrative structure was forced to relocate to Costa Rica. In 2022, the newspaper also reported that 22 of its staff members had been subjected to nearly 226 attempts to hack into their electronic devices using the Pegasus spyware.

“We conclude that at least 35 individuals from the media organizations El Faro, GatoEncerrado, La Prensa Gráfica, Revista Digital Disruptiva, Diario El Mundo, El Diario de Hoy, and two independent journalists were hacked using Pegasus. We also identified hacking against civil society organizations in El Salvador, including Fundación DTJ, Cristosal, and another NGO,” Citizen Lab states in a report on the spying on journalists and activists in El Salvador

According to a recent report by the Association of Journalists of El Salvador (APES), nearly 50 journalists and reporters have been forced into exile in 2025 for fear of being imprisoned by the Bukele administration, including the entire main editorial staff of El Faro. In addition, there have been more than 400 attacks against journalists by a government that appears to have no moral qualms about confronting the press with the force of the state.

In this regard, El Faro states in an article: “The government continues to criminalize journalists and media outlets that defy its propaganda. It is using the state apparatus, which is under the control of the Bukele family, to persecute critical voices.” A year after the forced exile of our staff from El Salvador, we have continued to practice journalism and investigate the government, through the publication of monthly magazines, weekly podcasts, international collaborations, and more gatherings of journalists, such as the Central American Journalism Forum.”

Finally, the newspaper stated: “We will continue to practice journalism with the commitment and rigor that has characterized us since 1998. But also with the certainty that, as long as we don’t stop, they won’t stop either.”

Israel becomes world’s most disliked country, global survey finds

Israel is now perceived more negatively than any other country in the world, followed by North Korea, Afghanistan and Iran, according to new global polling published by Nira Data as part of its 2026 democracy and country perception research.

The five most positively perceived countries were Switzerland, Canada, Japan, Sweden and Italy.

The findings place Israel at the bottom of the Global Country Perceptions 2026 ranking, a survey of 46,667 respondents assessing how 129 countries and three international organisations are viewed around the world. The ranking was published alongside Nira Data’s 2026 Democracy Perception Index, which surveyed 94,146 respondents across 98 countries on how citizens experience democracy in their own countries.

The result marks another sign of Israel’s deepening international isolation amid its genocide in Gaza, mass displacement of Palestinians, starvation policies and escalating violence in the occupied West Bank. Israel’s global image has collapsed as human rights organisations, UN experts and international courts have warned of grave violations of international law by the occupation state.

The United States also suffered a dramatic collapse in global standing. Washington is now ranked among the five most negatively perceived countries in the world, below both Russia and China in international favourability. Its net perception score fell from +22 per cent in 2024 to -16 per cent in 2026, a 38-point drop in just two years.

US decline came amid growing anger over President Donald Trump’s foreign policy, including strained relations with NATO allies, aggressive tariffs, threats relating to Greenland, cuts to Ukraine aid and Washington’s role in the US-Israeli conflict with Iran. The survey found that the US is now viewed as a major global threat, behind Russia and Israel.

The wider 2026 Democracy Perception Index describes itself as the world’s largest annual democracy survey. Unlike expert-based democracy rankings, it asks citizens directly how they experience democracy through questions on elections, freedom of speech, political pluralism, civic education, separation of powers, rule of law, government transparency and peaceful transitions.

The collapse in Israel’s standing comes as global public opinion has shifted sharply against the occupation state over its assault on Gaza. Since October 2023, Israel has killed over 74 thousand Palestinians, destroyed most of Gaza’s civilian infrastructure, displaced nearly the entire population and imposed conditions that UN experts and genocide scholars have described as genocidal.

For the US, the findings point to the steep cost of Washington’s continued military, diplomatic and political support for Israel. While successive US administrations have shielded Israel from accountability at the UN and continued arms transfers despite mounting evidence of war crimes, the survey suggests that global publics increasingly associate American power with impunity, double standards and destabilising wars.

Lebanese Red Cross says Israel killed more than 100 paramedics despite ceasefire

Lebanese Red Cross President Antoine Zoghbi said the Israeli occupation forces have killed more than 100 paramedics and medical workers since the ceasefire took effect, condemning the continued targeting of emergency personnel.

In an interview with Cairo News Channel, Zoghbi said that since 14th April Israel has killed more than 3,080 people, including over 100 medical and ambulance workers.

He said rescue and medical teams now operate under extremely dangerous conditions, adding that there is “no real protection” for ambulances or medical personnel in either Gaza Strip or Lebanon.

“Our problem today is that we have become targets, as if we were combatants,” Zoghbi said, adding that Lebanese officials and humanitarian organisations continue raising the issue in international forums.

He described the attacks on medical personnel and facilities as “a crime against humanity”, noting that four hospitals are no longer operational and 16 others have been damaged or directly attacked.

Zoghbi also said more than 200 ambulances had been targeted during the same period.

He concluded that the figures reflect the scale of the humanitarian crisis, stressing that the casualties among civilians and medical workers had occurred within a relatively short timeframe despite the ceasefire agreement.

Milei’s approval collapses under corruption scandals and prolonged economic crisis

In addition to the economic crisis Argentina is facing, a series of corruption allegations has caused the Argentine president’s popularity to plummet to one of its lowest levels since he took office.

Following several scandals and problems during his administration, the popularity of Javier Milei’s libertarian government has plummeted. The British newspaper Financial Times published a poll showing that 63% of Argentines disapprove of the far-right leader’s performance.

Argentina is currently in the midst of a prolonged economic crisis that shows no signs of ending. The libertarian government had promised that reducing the deficit and slowing the depreciation of the Argentine peso against the dollar, along with a radical downsizing of the state, would lead to rapid economic improvement.

Yet, evidently, Milei’s orthodox neoliberal policies have plunged the Argentine market into further crisis. Consumption has dropped significantly due to inflationary pressures to which the government has not been able to resolve. In Argentina, one of the world’s leading producers of beef, people have begun eating donkey meat on a massive scale due to the high price of beef, a development that has caused consternation throughout the region.

Chief of staff scrutinized over luxury home renovations

Added to this crisis in everyday life are the corruption scandals that have tarnished Milei’s administration. Milei’s chief of staff, Manuel Adorni, has dominated the headlines of major media outlets, facing allegations of illicit enrichment.

In one of the many allegations, Matías Tabar, an Argentine contractor, told the federal prosecutor handling the case that Adorni had paid him nearly USD 250,000 to carry out renovations on a home located in an exclusive neighborhood west of Buenos Aires.

According to Tabar, the renovations reportedly included a luxury marble swimming pool featuring a waterfall, as well as work on floors, walls, and bathrooms. Adorni allegedly paid for the entire project in cash without providing a receipt in exchange, which has raised many questions, such as how Adorni came to have USD 250,000 to build a luxurious waterfall and pool, and why there is no tax document to support this.

Furthermore, the case filed against Adorni states that the property where the controversial waterfall was built was reportedly purchased by the official in 2024 for approximately USD 120,000.

Lavish trips and exorbitant expenses

Additionally, it has been reported that Adorni’s wife traveled to New York on the presidential plane on an alleged official mission, even though she is not a member of the cabinet. At the time, Adorni apologized for this incident: “It was a bad decision, a terrible decision. Even though it didn’t cost the government a single dollar, I didn’t realize the mistake, and for that I apologize.”

The judicial investigation currently being prepared is also reportedly taking into account a series of expenses that do not correspond to the salary of a chief of staff.

Adorni has denied all the allegations, while Milei has stated that he fully supports his chief of staff and is confident that the allegations are false. The president accompanied his chief of staff to Congress, where Adorni again denied the allegations in response to questions from senators.

Among them is Representative Marcela Pagano, who has called for the chief of staff’s arrest on charges of alleged illicit enrichment. Furthermore, Pagano alleged that Adorni attempted to influence contractor Tabar before he gave his statement, which is a crime. Adorni has also denied these accusations.

Scandals and economic turmoil deepen Milei’s popularity crisis

In addition to the accusations against Adorni, Milei has also faced criticisms due to his involvement in the Hondurasgate scandal. According to the leaked recordings, Milei contributed USD 350,000 to the plot to spring convicted drug trafficker and former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández from US detention and support his efforts to wage disinformation campaigns against the Left in the region.

Thus, Milei’s popularity is falling in the face of a reality where people do not have enough money to buy meat, while the chief of staff is accused of paying a quarter of a million dollars to build a luxury pool with a waterfall. These are two realities so starkly different that, if confirmed, they could anger even President Milei’s most ardent supporter.
