Morning Star: Mass action is the antidote to Labour-Tory policy consensus

Shadow chancellor Rachel Reeves speaking about the economy at the Association of British Insurers in the City of London, May 7, 2024

“LABOUR and the Tories move closer on economy.”

Thus a headline in the Financial Times last week. The FT speaks not just to and for British finance capital, but to capitalists worldwide needing a steer on British and international politics.

Unlike the bought-and-paid-for Tory press, it usually does so without demagogy or partisan point-scoring. Its conclusions are therefore to be taken seriously.

It writes: “Despite being the official opposition, Labour has signally refused to oppose many of [Jeremy] Hunt’s recent economic policies…” including the cuts to National Insurance.

Further: “Hunt set out 110 measures to boost the economy in his 2023 autumn statement and Labour opposed none of them. The same applied to all of the policies announced in the chancellor’s spring budget this year.”

Shadow chancellor Rachel Reeves has also agreed with all Chancellor Hunt’s financial services reforms, has accepted his target of ensuring falling debt as a share of national income within five years, and adopted his corporation tax rate.

The Tories have repaid the compliment up to a point, stealing Labour proposals on taxing non-doms and the North Sea oil and gas industries.

But this convergence is mainly on Tory terms, with Labour dumping any proposal, like its green investment plans, which sit outside the consensus around a new austerity.

For that is what is on offer at the general election. It is a further squeeze on public services and wages to help improve the competitive position of British capitalism.

Reeves and the Labour Party pretend that their approach represents “change” because it offers “stability” after years of Tory chaos.

Patient safety at risk as Tories’ ‘40 hospitals’ project mired in delays

Campaigners slam pledge as a ‘scam’ while Trust leaders say costs have spiralled by 25 per cent

THE Tories’ faltering pledge to build more hospitals is a “scam” designed to make it look as if the government is committed to investing in health services, campaigners charged today.

The government promised 40 new hospitals in England by 2030 under Boris Johnson’s leadership in 2019.

The scheme sparked criticism after it transpired that not all of them would be new but included refurbishments and extensions.

Five years later, NHS trust leaders are voicing their frustration as the New Hospital Programme (NHP) continues to be mired in delays.

They say that patients are increasingly at risk in crumbling buildings, with out-of-date equipment that is hampering care.

Some trusts are being forced to cough up £1 million a month from already stretched budgets, to cover on-hold building projects and the bill for having to patch up dilapidated sites, says NHS Providers, a membership organisation for NHS trusts.

Reacting to a new report from the Office for Environmental Protection which says: “government will not meet its ambition that most water bodies will be on the road to good condition or else already in that state by 2027,” Green Party co-leader Carla Denyer said:

“The Green Party wants to see much greater protection of nature in law, and that includes our rivers.

“We would set up an Independent Commission for Nature that would set targets for nature protection and restoration, enforced through the courts.

“This would be groundbreaking and make future governments act to protect our waterways from agricultural and industrial pollution.

“It would allow for the first time the possibility of individuals, communities and conservation groups taking legal action on behalf of nature. Currently, every time our rivers, seas or land is polluted, prosecution is left to hopelessly underfunded quangos.

“We also need water companies in public ownership and an end to leaking sewage.

“We need to give space for all of nature to thrive, and that includes protecting our rivers.”

‘The worst kind of arm-chair politics, bigoted and ill-informed’

Caroline Lucas hit out at the leaked details of the new guidelines this morning, condemning the Tory Party for engaging in the “worst kind of arm-chair politics”.

The MP for Brighton Pavillion wrote on X: “Politicising sex education is unforgivable, dangerous & reactionary. It’s always *age appropriate* to give young people skills to stay safe. For younger ones that means teaching about respect & healthy relationships. This is the worst kind of arm-chair politics bigoted & ill-informed.”

Daniel Kebede, General Secretary of the National Education Union said that, if the reports are correct, then “there are many areas of concern”. Kebede slammed the Tory agenda towards school policy as he called it “yet more culture war noise from an ill-informed and out of touch government.”

The leader of the Commons has clearly turned her attention to life after Sunak…

Although Tory rebels are reported to have thrown in the towel after their failed attempts to replace Rishi Sunak as Tory party leader ahead of the general election, there’s still some manoeuvring in the background, with one hopeful’s campaign website re-registered.

Penny Mordaunt, who has repeatedly insisted that she has no intention to replace Sunak before the general election, saw her campaign website, pm4pm.com, re-registered on the day of the local elections, right-wing blog Guido Fawkes reports.

Guido reports that the domain name was owned by ‘Lewis Communications, a PR business run by Chris Lewis, who is said to be the political and spin guru behind Penny’s (abortive) leadership pitches.’
